There's no such OS as "PC", you're probably talking about Windows though.
Macs are considered PCs too, because they're personal computers, in fact any home computer or otherwise that is for person use is a personal computer.
The reason you think "Macs" are different than "PCs" is because of their advertising. It makes people think that Mac hardware is different than regular computer hardware, even though it's just the same, but overpriced and prettier.

- bradleyland, on 04/25/2008, -0/+10The big deal is that the unwashed masses wouldn't recognize a decent security model if it jumped up and bitch slapped them.
- Nth3nSum, on 04/25/2008, -0/+3Hold up a second, UAC is worse than sudo.
You are not asked "do you want to download this file?", and then "Do you trust this publisher?", and finally "Are you sure you want to install this application?" and maybe even again if it tries to install something like java or .net that the application would need. Turning off UAC will only stop 1 of these popups.
See when I'm in windows and I want to install firefox. I download firefox.msi (or whatever) and then I run the installer. Now windows stops me, and asks me if i trust, then if i'm sure.
The difference in linux is fundamentally part of the procedure. In order to do an admin/root change to the system you must sudo. It is therefore accepted by the user as something to do, and is made to propagate the admin/root rights to all subroutines in the proceedure. If I run, "sudo apt-get install updates" all the updates install all at once, without any popups questioning my sanity.
That same procedure in Windows is cluttered with roadblocks put up as a lack of trust for the user. Are you sure?, is a demeaning question put to the user any time they want to even update java, and next I'll be asked if I trust Nvidia to install a driver update, and then do I want to update flash...etc ad nauseum. - neckaros, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1gKsudo

- asforme, on 04/25/2008, -3/+6Yeah that's why OSX is so awesome, that and they don't have Vista's stupid UAC.
- bradleyland, on 04/26/2008, -1/+3While the Safari 3 "update" on PCs was a total sham, you grossly misunderstand the purpose of having to enter your password in order to perform certain actions.
When you run software on your computer, the software runs as "you". Anything that you can go in and delete, the software can delete. The Unix philosophy of user privilege is that you should only have the necessary access rights work within the sandbox that consists of your files and programs. You shouldn't have carte blanch access to alter the state of the system. The password prompt you see means that something important is about to happen. It is intended to make you think for a second before proceeding. All flavors of Unix have something like this.
The difference between Unix and Windows is that Unix has been doing this since day one, so the implementation is sane. In Windows, many components of the operating system were built without regard for these types of security practices, so it is difficult to separate them after the fact. This is one of the primary reasons UAC sucks so badly.

- GregR, on 04/24/2008, -18/+30On the first part, you are correct no one in their right mind runs Windows without a firewall.
On the second, part, the security by obscurity myth was debunked long ago.- Makaveli604, on 04/24/2008, -8/+47Remember that contest in which the mac was hacked first? Hmm.
- Sidzilla, on 04/24/2008, -11/+22"On the second, part, the security by obscurity myth was debunked long ago."
And that must be why the Mac was hacked in two minutes at Pwn 2 Own.

Being a fan boy is bad enough, but just flat out lying like that is really pathetic.- elveis, on 04/24/2008, -18/+3Hmmm. Hacking a Mac locally with a crossover cable after directing the user to a specific web site. Yeah, clearly the Mac is less secure than Windoze. Please.
- Hortnon, on 04/25/2008, -3/+8Aren't most Windows exploits based on a user performing an action, like visiting a malicious site?
And of course, I'm referring to the last 5 years or so...Before that's an entirely different story. - mesasone, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1Maybe you should go get a dictionary and look some of those words up.
In case you're too lazy to do so, debunked means proven wrong. As in, the myth has been proven wrong and is not true.
- 5thWall, on 04/24/2008, -1/+14Why are you digging him down? The point was that people will go after the "poor Mac" even if it's got less market share than Windows.
Did you all forget how to read? - PabloMac, on 04/24/2008, -29/+7"...no one in their right mind runs Windows without a firewall."
No one in their right mind runs Windows.
- Laughsatyou, on 04/24/2008, -3/+17anyone who wants to play games runs windows.
- nmnnotmyname, on 04/25/2008, -4/+10Oh please... Running Mac is like putting your computer in a jail cell. At least with Linux and Windows you get readily available software.
- NotaFanboy87, on 04/25/2008, -2/+0Your mom runs windows.
- alienunknown, on 04/25/2008, -3/+1Yea right mmnotmyname. linux is disorganised and windows is pathetic. It crashes constantly, full of viruses and its a pain in the ass to use. You obviously haven't used anything but redhat or xp before :P lol
- astrofrank128, on 04/25/2008, -1/+1Yes, alienunknown, my daily routine with windows amounts to this: "hey, I think i'll play a computer game... aw man, too many viruses."
- nmnnotmyname, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1Linux is about as disorganized as OS X is ugly.
- Vorin, on 04/24/2008, -6/+10well, my computers are capable of running windows and linux. why? because apple hasn't the foresight to allow osx on other hardware. they get their panties in a bunch when a small business can use their OS on hardware that they don't put their stamp of approval on/overcharge for.
- Laughsatyou, on 04/24/2008, -0/+1or dual boot.
- Dhalgren, on 04/25/2008, -9/+4It's like a console, are you upset that you can't install the XBox 360 software on your PS3 so that you can play 360 games? One of the reasons Macs perform well is because Apple is dealing with a known hardware configuration...
- Boondoggle, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2My computers are capable of running windows, linux and OS X. In fact, this one is doing just that as I type.
- nmnnotmyname, on 04/25/2008, -1/+2@Dhalgren: heh... funny... I ran OSx86 on my computers and they ran fine. Could it be a case of. "Apple is too much of a pussy"? With minimal modifications and maybe a few more drivers they could have a decent experience on x86 Desktops.
- polywaffle, on 04/25/2008, -2/+2its not that apples a pussy, its that they can charge insane prices for low-speced hardware to go along with their OS.
- mtekk, on 04/24/2008, -0/+5PabloMac,
You know that UTF F8FF only resolves to the mac logo on macs, right?- PabloMac, on 04/25/2008, -1/+1Yep.
- Brasky, on 04/24/2008, -3/+5I don't run a firewall. I just dont download every stupid email attachment I get and for the most part stay off the porn. Firefox helps as well.
- nmnnotmyname, on 04/25/2008, -1/+2In other words, it's pretty ***** hard to bother a computer running BSD and UNIX - ish OS's by design..
- unionaire, on 04/25/2008, -2/+31. Personal Firewalls are not "safe" in any sense because they are stationed on the same system, if the system has security holes unknown to the public but the attackers , you will be affected regardless of you have a firewall or not.
2. For personal users, security are often compromised from within, which means running malicious softwares to protect themselves is to have better habbit of using their computer (which is stupid i know, but this is how computers work nowadays, and yes it goes to other OSs as well even though they are not popular targets of attacks, the idea is pretty much the same.)
3. Firefox + Adblock works better than a Firewall, this shows how wrong internet is nowadays, don't blame everything on the OS, don't forget websites with excessive ads, spywares, and misleading pop-ups - schroeder, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1@unionaire
Software firewalls are not "safe", but hardware firewalls (NAT router) are a real protection. Malicious software can disable software firewalls but not hardware if UPnP is disabled and the admin password is changed from default. Also, not all exploits that a firewall can block come from web browsers. There are other applications and services that may have holes. January's "Patch Tuesday" patched a exploit that circumvented software firewalls from the outside, but would not be able to get around a hardware firewall. And I think you are thinking about NoScript in Firefox. And while it provides additional protection to a system, neither is a substitution for the other. - linkinpark342, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1Hm? I thought security by obscurity is one of the key foundations of Linux security. Sure you can figure out an exploit for X, then you need an exploit for Y and Z and note that you don't know what program/versions Y and Z are... something along those lines?
- quade, on 04/24/2008, -8/+21Security by obscurity isn't the same thing as security by lack of interest. :)
- Boondoggle, on 04/25/2008, -2/+7actually it pretty much is the same thing

- nmnnotmyname, on 04/26/2008, -0/+1No, I run Linux and Windows. It's not always working. I've had so~ many problems with DirectX games before. It has issues.
I'm actually quite good at computing with Windows though I've lost a lot of Windows skills over time (luckily it was mostly tweaking skills) but I can still program for Windows fluently.
So don't get me wrong. I can't stand OS X just because of the interface alone (not graphics, usability.). It's just, the PC is not working for everything all the time. It really isn't.
Of course, my idea of a game has devolved into a game of solitaire, cave story, or screwing around in Stunt Playground or something, so it's not like i do heavy gaming. (I would if there was a Linux UT3 :)

- NotaFanboy87, on 04/25/2008, -2/+0Disease, Macs come with 4 button mice. Primary, Secondary, Ball Click, and Squeeze. You can assign many apps and commands to them. Apple just thinks it's time for people to think beyond the box and realize that the mouse is touch sensitive.

I have a Mac and a PC. I don't poop my pants when the Mac gets an invasion of the firewall -- since it has never happened. I got a trojan on the first day of building my PC -- it was actually ON THE INSTALL CD for the FAX software.- kansai22, on 04/24/2008, -0/+3Stop downloading bootleg software then.

Apple bases their business model on having idiots buy their computers.- jcm267, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2There are some idiots at work who run linux at home.
- Karusune, on 04/24/2008, -3/+1That's a nice statement to make that has absolutely NOTHING to back it up with...
To be more exact, I could say the opposite and it would be just as true. Then again, I only know one person with a Mac. A report at my school shows that 72% of all the students have a computer, and all of them use a PC... though my city is a city of 2000 or less.- MacBastard, on 04/24/2008, -2/+1I didn't say I had anything to back it up with - it's my personal experience after 15 years in IT and 25 total years of using everything from mainframes to PCs to Macs to SGI to (godhelpme) NextStations. Broaden your view, still-in-school-person.
- MacBastard, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1Oh *****, sorry - I thought you were replying to my comment. I believed the nesting, not the words for some reason.
- macguy24, on 04/25/2008, -1/+0i agree 110% with this statement there is no one that uses a mac and is an idiot, that i know. everyone i know that uses a pc is an idiot. - kawaiirobo, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1I love my mac, but honestly i've met a idiot or two that uses a mac, there are stupid people behind every OS with the posable exception of BSD, but it's obscurity keeps most idiots away.

- endlessoul, on 04/25/2008, -14/+3But I meant it. That's one of the funniest comments I've ever seen on Digg.

- endlessoul, on 04/24/2008, -54/+10That's it, everyone close your tab. Thanks to his comment being so full of WIN, this thread is over.

- amdforever, on 04/24/2008, -6/+1This picture is full of fail. Thus, my use of FAIL is accurate.

- Ex3poo, on 04/24/2008, -30/+5whens the last time PC made a good movie?
- Conwaysb0718, on 04/24/2008, -2/+13when did mac ever make a movie good? and dodging a wrench doesnt count...
- spdorsey, on 04/24/2008, -10/+3All of the visual effects in Star Wars: Episode I were done in an app called ElectricImage on Macs. I'm not attesting to the movie's script or acting, but the effects were damned good and all Mac driven.
- tian2992, on 04/24/2008, -2/+3whoosh!
- dlllb, on 04/25/2008, -1/+1The effects in the newer trilogy killed the magic
- Ex3poo, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1agreed
- rspeed, on 04/24/2008, -0/+5"Accepted" was surprisingly good. Moderately funny, though mostly due to Lewis Black.
- Sidzilla, on 04/24/2008, -0/+5"Waiting" is a modern day classic. Thanks to that movie I look forward to senility, wandering through the neighborhood in my underwear giving small children the middle finger.

- danconia, on 04/24/2008, -2/+5LOL That's what I heard on TBS the other night. Cracks me up every time I hear it. People don't get what you're saying though so they're digging you down...
- Lazydriver, on 04/25/2008, -6/+2I dugg him down because it's not as funny as the original from Die Hard.
Nothing personal.

- AWBoy666, on 04/24/2008, -24/+17This is so true, lol.
- Willravel, on 04/24/2008, -57/+10Buried. This kind of partisan ***** damages Digg and reflects poorly on it's members.

- tacohead, on 04/24/2008, -4/+2Would you shut up with your responsible thinking?
I was starting to have fun digging down all of those fanboys. - Dwebtron, on 04/24/2008, -2/+15On second thought; It’s funny how partisian thinking like this destroys digg when it’s against macs, but when it comes to windows bashing you’re the master. Lets look at the facts (/ quotes from will):
Exhibit A: Mac has products that a lot of people enjoy, and the movement of that interest from consumers into the business world was inevitable. I suspect it will be a while yet until Mac falls into a stable new market share percentage. One thing is clear: it won't be 2%.
Exhibit B: Scam + breach of EULA? Give me a ***** break. Go buy a Mac Mini. It's got Panther pre-installed ($155), Firewire ($50), and it won't require you pay a hefty fine to Apple if you're caught
Exhibit C (and my favorite):
Dell creates cheap computers by using cheap parts and cheap labor. They're the Kia of the computer world. Apple isn't Kia. Apple is a higher end product, like Alienware. They're more like the Mercedes and BMW of the computer world. So what we've got with the article above is Kia trying to build a Mercedes without Mercedes' permission. The OpenMac will be sued for breaching the EULA and then people will either go back to trying to uninstal Vista on a PC or will get a real Mac. From Apple.
I drive a VW. Does that mean I’m running some type of Linux distro? Go home fanboy.- Willravel, on 04/24/2008, -8/+1I have opinions regarding actual topics of discussion. Each of those instances above involves actual news, not some meaningless picture made by fanboys against fanboys.
- sgtpppr, on 04/25/2008, -1/+2Exhibit C there is a weak attempt at an Apple advertisement by setting up a strawman (Kia v. Mercedes). How exactly is that 'news' and how exactly are you not a Apple corporate shill?
- Willravel, on 04/25/2008, -1/+1A strawman fallacy is a misrepresentation of the other argument. If anything one could argue it's guilt by association, but even that would be a stretch.

- jcm267, on 04/25/2008, -1/+5Alienware is for douchebags.
- ssn697, on 04/25/2008, -0/+2Dell owned. What more needs to be said? Colored cases can't hide everything else.
- sgtpppr, on 04/25/2008, -1/+1That is what we called getting owned. Fan boys need to learn a lesson from Willravel here: being a fan boy in articles that are pro-whatever-you-worship and then using the rodney king 'why can't we all get along' in an article against whatever you worship isn't cutting edge. It's also not witty, fooling anyone, or making you any less of a fan boy who spends their life worshiping a corporate product.
- Willravel, on 04/25/2008, -3/+2This is called a biased sample. You forgot this:
Exhibit D:
I'm a bit torn here. While clearly the quality isn't present in this machine that you would find in a real Mac, the EULA is somewhat restrictive and it would be nice if Mac allowed for some competition using their amazing OS.
"Fanboys" don't question. I do. I fully expect this to get dugg down, but at least I know I'm right.

- threemagic, on 04/24/2008, -2/+6Do you feel a little funny when you see him?
- ferrariman60, on 04/24/2008, -2/+11Back then? He started making Mac commercials before this movie came out, idiot.
- zspeed78, on 04/24/2008, -5/+2I will try to keep up on the time tables of commercials and no name actors better just for you, genius.
- Jeffler, on 04/25/2008, -1/+4Justin Long isn't SUPER high profile but he's not exactly no-name.
- zspeed78, on 04/26/2008, -1/+2Ive never heard the guys name in my life, and I catch a lot of tv and movies.

- FredFredrickson, on 04/24/2008, -21/+9I made an image like this for our computers at work a few weeks ago (to fuel the flames of the inner-office PC vs. Mac wars). I'm not surprised someone else thought of it too. Good stuff!
- obeezy, on 04/26/2008, -0/+1no you didn't
- baconz, on 04/24/2008, -32/+10PC is the old bald man who smells of pee that was afraid of computers, right? Thought so.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 04/24/2008, -1/+1I think the Mac is just rightly concerned about the PC's over-reaction to porn and trojans.
- ceredron, on 04/24/2008, -0/+6That's ***** Bruce Willis. Know your place and show some respect.
- keithburgun, on 04/24/2008, -1/+2If anything, Mac users are the ones afraid of computers. FILE EXTENSIONS?!?!? NOOOOOOOOO THEY DONT EXIST *holds fists over eyes*
- NotaFanboy87, on 04/25/2008, -0/+0WTF are you talking about? You can show/hide file extensions in about any window on about any program. Work with a mac for a month, then try some witty comeback.
- slimborama, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1I was gonna digg you down, but your name is baconz
- rdubya44, on 04/24/2008, -20/+10See, Mac wouldn't even be in harms way if PC hadn't come along and f'ed everything up!
- mattrazzo, on 04/24/2008, -0/+4Did you see the movie?
- sfcaptainrob, on 04/24/2008, -1/+9Uh no? Did you watch the movie? Mac was going to get blown to pieces if PC hadn't come to the door.
- Opheleum, on 04/24/2008, -1/+2Right; he'd be dead because someone actually wrote a virus for him and he had no protection until PC showed up loaded up with antiviral guns.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 04/24/2008, -3/+2PC started calling them names and evil-doers while blowing up stuff in their country. Now he has embroiled the poor Mac in his over-priced and underfunded battle.
Mac: "What do you mean they hate US for our freedoms? -- they just hate you for being a dick, PC."
- slvrhawq, on 04/24/2008, -28/+327"Yippie-kay-yay, *****" - PC

- richiestang78, on 04/24/2008, -40/+35Hi im a Mac and Im a PC, with PCs you have all those silly upgrade options, but with me when you want to upgrade all you have to do is fork out 2grand on a new computer.
- Duggan360, on 04/24/2008, -5/+18Not really anything to do with the picture, but still a fact
- GregR, on 04/24/2008, -5/+2Often with Macs, you upgrade the hard drive and RAM and that's all that's needed. My wife's old G3 iMac runs faster now than with the OS that it shipped with.
If you want to upgrade, then get a MacPro tower - I'd be interested to hear what you think I can't upgrade in it?- Syphon8, on 04/24/2008, -1/+6The video card.
Unless you want to go buy a customised Mac OS X one. - mitrovarr, on 04/24/2008, -1/+4Of course, restricting upgrades to only the high-end machines defeats most of the point. Cheap machines and old machines are the ones that benefit the most from upgrading.
