- aliguana, on 10/10/2007, -1/+103"We've created an agreement for 7,500 WiFi spots in the UK"
Let me guess. One in Manchester, one in Bristol, 7,498 in London? - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -10/+86If Apple thinks that people of the UK are going to pay both a fee to get the device of £269 AND a monthly contract fee then they really, really haven't done their homework.
Update: Just confirmed at a MINIMUM of £35 per month! These guys have lost it. - pwnies, on 10/10/2007, -2/+49Just confirmed - no 3G. I no longer care.
- aliguana, on 10/10/2007, -7/+50yup. every other phone model, even the N95, comes free with contract. If Apple think we're going to pay £269 AND a more expensive contract just for this gizmo they don't know the Brits very well. I'll keep my FREE N95 and buy a Touch instead. Next.
- jimmy85, on 10/10/2007, -5/+44No 3G for the UK iphone, that's suicide on Apple's behalf..... The vast majority of phones released in the UK are 3g
- pwnies, on 10/10/2007, -2/+40Iphone announced in the UK under carrier O2. On sale November 9th.
- Floris, on 10/10/2007, -1/+36Unlimited means ... 90 to 150gb cap on comcast
unlimited means ... 1400 internet pages per day on the iphone - mattmac24, on 10/10/2007, -5/+35no 3g btw
- akf2000, on 10/10/2007, -5/+31***** me, Steve is saying some ***** stuff, like how the iPod Touch is "training wheels" for the iPhone and how it's "cat and mouse" between Apple and the unlockers. This coupled with the latest iTunes release/ lockdown is making me queasy.
- aliguana, on 10/10/2007, -2/+26funny, Nokia can manage it. Oh yeah, they are a cellphone company...
- Pooley, on 10/10/2007, -5/+26So, let me just get this clear:
1) I've got to pay the £269 ($535) for my UK iPhone
2) I've got to change providers
3) I've got to pay a higher monthly tarrif than I do now...
4) ... and for that I get a lower connection speed
5) I've got to sign a contract for 18 months
6) Total cost of ownership for my iPhone is £900 in the next 18 months
Sorry, Apple. I love your computers but you've got to be kidding me on this! Take up in the UK is going to be proportionately much less than it was in the States because people already have a lot more than what you're offering - and much cheaper. You really are relying on people buying into the hype. There's no other compelling reason to buy this device over others. - mattmac24, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23wonder when australia get it?
- Morky, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19You'll by a touch instead? Good idea! Then you'll only be spending £269 as opposed to, um, £269.
- akf2000, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19Can anyone tell me how many "internet pages" a YouTube video is and how it will be deducted from the 1,400 daily fair use policy.
What a load of crap, - afwjam, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19dugg for some inside british city stuff I don't know about.
- REBELinBLUE, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15You mean versus EDGE which has never been used in this country and so O2 are having to create a network and predict all of 30% coverage by launch. ;)
- staticdrifter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Good idea. Buy a Touch. That'll show them.
- akf2000, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15It's 3 devices in one, a breakthrough internet comunications device, the best iPod ever and a gorgeous *loses script* a.. gorgeous, something else anyway.
- stikkitjim, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16UK basically getting legged over on the price? Same thing, much cheaper in the states.
You see Steve - In the UK we are used to getting cool phones for free / very cheap. - acidandspatter, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14o2 just got really owned
- thickdrummer, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17Free WiFi through the Cloud network has sold this for me! Living in Leeds, it will give me pretty much 100% coverage! Awesome!
- Molt, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Yep, but the price'll drop two months after release anyway..
- davdav, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Last I checked the phones in Europe blow the phones here out of the water (N95, W880i, etc all free from T-Mobile in UK). It's pretty standard to see much better phones in Europe rather than the US.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15For those who want an accurate cost analysis, the overall price of having the phone will be a MINIMUM of £899.
The contract is a minimum of £35 per month for 18 months minimum = £630
The phone is £269
Total cost = £899 - aliguana, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14I get more voice and text than I'll ever use (or have ever used), plus unilimited 3G, for £30 with Three. Oh, and a free N95. Tell me why I want an iPhone again?
(thats a rhetorical question - I WANT one, but only if it comes with the same t&c as every other cellphone in the UK) - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Actually The Cloud have quite a number of hotspots and they have a checker on their website so you can find where they are. There are three within five miles of my house.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9And Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland......
- bigBadOwl, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Wow! I can't believe all of this. Apple has lost the plot and 02 is along for the ride. They only have 30% Edge coverage in the UK and their "Unlimited" plan is bollox! Apple is locking up it products tighter than a ducks arse. Someone (perhaps some kind of marketing guru) tell me why on earth I would want to buy into that deal. It makes no sense to me as a consumer what-so-ever. (and I used to love Apple products)
- Chewie67, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Oh woe is you.
That's what we do here in the US. You either get a cheap-o phone for free with zero features, or you BUY the phone AND a monthly service contract. - NSResponder, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11"As long as apple was on ppc intel were worthless slow chips, until THEY switched."
Umm, no. Apple switched once Intel improved their product to make it better than the G5 (which it still doesn't beat in all cases)
Maybe you missed it, but Intel had a new generation of processors come out. It's called the "core" architecture. It made all the papers.
-jcr - Morky, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I'm not sure you can even load 1400 pages a day over Edge.
- ozziek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9and
7) No MMS
8) No 3G/HSPDA (although you've probably covered that in 4)
9) You probably can't accept any files, images or ANYTHING else from anyone wanting to legitimately blue-tooth you something
10) You can't install 3rd party apps without hacking (and possibly bricking it)
Naff, I'll stick with my TYTN II and iPod Classic 160gb and I *may* get an iPod Touch because I may not be able to resist the Apple hypnotic field for long - tutivlahos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Peter North
- Meccabilly, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Im moving to leeds!
Oh wait... did you say leeds? F*ck that. - ivanvanderbyl, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Its not about what has existed, its about who is going to be the iPhone carrier in Europe.
- Sazime, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9And there you have it folks. Proof that American companies see no future in selling devices to Canada, out nearest neighbor.
It's as easy as driving a little ways north, but they'd rather fly product thousands of miles across the Atlantic. - Blacky, on 10/10/2007, -7/+15Wow are you buying into their marketing crap?
As long as apple was on ppc intel were worthless slow chips, until THEY switched.
Steve Jobs said people wouldn't want to watch video on a tiny little screen ... until they released the iPod video.
***** smells bad until Steve Jobs says it smells like roses!
Seriously 3G uses more power, but to the point that it takes up more than 55%? I think that is *****.
They offer just one european country a non-updated iphone with an outdated technology which they now need to adopt in the uk ...
This press release has left my mind boggled in so many ways. I won't be forking over my cash until it will stop feeling like they ripped me off before I bought the damn product! - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8It will recognise the MAC address of the phone and just let you browse for free. T-Mobile does this with PSP in the USA and I believe BT Openzone does it with Nintendo DS in the UK already.
- Po0py, on 10/10/2007, -6/+13Agreed. Complete rip off. But I disagree on the point that nobody will buy it. It's apple. Don't discount the apple factor and the consumers willingness to get on their knees to be seen with the latest fancy apple stuff.
- ivanvanderbyl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7When it does come to Australia/Asia, It will only be successful if its unlocked.
- aliguana, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10wait... you're going to be on the phone for 8 hours a day. Non stop? What, you work on a chatline or something? ;)
- ivanvanderbyl, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Steve Jobs: "3G needs to get back up to 5+ hours, something we think well see later next year."
- robmcm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Free data is good! I have a blackberry perl with no 3G and it's ok, but the free wifi on the cloud network is a big plus!
- wellyuk, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10The N95 didn't come out free. It's only free now (on some networks), several months later. Many phones don't come out for free. For instance, if you want an N95 on Virgin Mobile, you'd have to pay 229 for the pleasure of it (on a 30 quid contract). If you want a T-Mobile Vario, that's 80 quid. You can only get the N95 for free on an 18 month, 30 quid contract from vodaphone, otherwise you're paying upwards of 50 quid a month.
To say every phone model comes free with a contract is completely incorrect. Some phones you're tied to a £75+/month contract to get the phone free.
People WILL buy the iPhone and Apple blatantly HAS done it's homework. Did you really expect it to come out for free? - ozziek, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12Ouch, they have lost the plot. 269 for the phone and then min. 35 a month is ridiculous. What a great way to ensure that UK iPhones are also hacked so we can get them on our existing providers and tariffs!
Oh and no 3G because of bad battery life? Who cares? Give US the choice to choose between 3G, HSDPA or GPRS. Give us the options in the phone and let the customer decide if they want to trade off speed against battery life.
Another reason why Apple are not as they say, "years ahead of other phones" with the iPhone and they won't be until they start supporting the features that consumers want AND HAVE with existing devices they are competing with AND for much cheaper! - akf2000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Yeah, and what the hell is an 'internet page' when it's at home?
- AICkieran, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Yeah, the point is that with the iPhone, not only do we pay for it every month, we pay for it in the beginning, they are taking the piss. Americans may be used to that, we however, are not.
- chris9902, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6*****' hell. I find it hilarious that they still charge you full price for the iPhone even though any other phone on a £35 contract would be free or discounted.
I guess they just know the market (read: Apple fanboys are stupid) - aliguana, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8I'm an iPhone fan (pricing/contract issues aside), but here is what will happen:
Beginning of November, mass adoption of iPhone, whether new contracts or transfers. Beginning of December, levelling out. Mid December - peaks again slightly just before Christmas. January - new (free) Nokia/Samsung/Moto/LG models hit the streets, iPhone sales trail off. March - new, cheaper, larger capacity iPhones hit the stores, sales pick up again. June - new touch-screen Nokia's enter the stores, iPhone trails off again. September - new, larger, cheaper iPhones hit the.... -
