- fraggle35, on 10/12/2007, -10/+59you can get Kill Bill 1 and 2 for the price of a big mac in most bargain bins, why wait and pay twice as much on itunes?
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -11/+39those of us who like to support the work people do.
- qpid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25I would rather netflix movies or *shudder* rent them from Blockbuster than pay the rumored 9.99-14.99
- kwilson81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I know people won't be happy with your comment but it's a very good question that the "powers that be" should be asking themselves.
Why would people pay for content that they can download for free?
Addressing that should really be their first step. The threat of legal action obviously isn't working on everyone. I think they should be thinking "okay, people could download this illegally for free - what price can we put this at so that we still make a profit but is cheap enough that people will go for it?"
$9.99-14.99 sounds way to high to convince people of this, especially when you've got no special features or other content that you would get with buying the DVD. They already have an advantage that, by downloading from them, you are guaranteed to receive quality content (instead of the lottery and dangers of the P2P networks) so they need to build on this.
People will pay for content if it's priced right. The iTunes music store and competitors has proved this. I just wish they would think this stuff through properly instead of just rushing out a movie download service. - briansalo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Exactly, plus... what about quality and burning to DVD?
I don't think that it's a bad price, but if it's not going to be a high/decent-quality file with the special features + burning to a dvd capabilities I'll just buy it from the store... - martin993, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14"Obviously Apple and Microsoft both know this, ready to wipe out video hire stores world wide. Probably as soon as the end of this year."
No. You rent a movie for £2 for the night. Take it home and watch it. Easy. At £10 a throw for a movie without any fancy box or special features that you have to wait to download and burn onto a DVD if you want to watch it in the comfort of your living room this is gonna do absolutely nothing for Joe Public. It took a long time for DVD to take hold properly, this is not gonna kill rental stores in its first year out. Especially not with that price tag.
And it'll be £10 a throw in the UK because they always just convert dollars into pounds. Although I dunno why I care, it'll be a miracle if we even get the service anyway. We don't even have TV shows on iTunes yet. - pbyrne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12"Serenity is on iTunes now, has been for a while (search for FireFly and then click to view the whole series), and it is only $1.99."
Not to nit-pick, but that's not Serenity (the movie), that's Serenity (the pilot episode of the TV series). - andreas1999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I'd rather make the 2 minute walk down to blockbuster and pick up the whole DVD. In the future I'll tell my kids how we had to walk outside our doors to buy CDs, DVDs and food. And how most people weighed less than 2000 pounds..
But this will be useful for those of us who doesn't live in a city. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"And it'll be £10 a throw in the UK because they always just convert dollars into pounds. Although I dunno why I care, it'll be a miracle if we even get the service anyway. We don't even have TV shows on iTunes yet."
I agree. I'm an ex-pat aussie living in London for a couple of years and I am _stunned_ at the cost of everything here. I thought things were unfairly priced back home, well... - moisie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Jaybob404, Apple put DRM on stuff because the music companies require it, the Fairplay DRM is amongst the least restrictive you can get. What is there to make you think they're gonna massively clamp down in terms of movies? At worst they'll likely be as restrictive as any other download service.
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12"And that's why I pirate the album then go to the concert, b/c last time I checked artists get RIPPED OFF from album sales by the MPAA...etc"
so you think that's ok? - zaren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5For everyone that's squawking that $10 is too much for a download with no special content or liner notes or whatever...
How much of that stuff are you getting when you pay $8+ to see a movie at a theater?
Once again, you guys are the bleeding edge HIGH END of the market. This service is going to be pushed towards those folks that just want to see a movie, but don't want the hassle of driving down to the theater and paying $5 for a bucket of popcorn. A few extra bucks for the convenience of what they want, when they want, in their own home... It might just work. Downloadble music has sure worked. - h3xley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5AC3 isn't lossless either, whats your point?
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Excellent point, but remember that while you're paying $8+ for a movie ticket, plus $$ for food...you're also getting to see a movie as soon as it's released and you're getting to see it on a huge screen that 99.99% of the world does not have personal access to.
Now if these $10-$15 movies were releases that are currently out in theaters, I'm sure there would be a lot more positive responses. - TenMinuteParty, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Did anyone else see Toy Story 3? Apparently it's a straight to download release.
- omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It's interesting how people are reacting to a rumor. Let's wait and see what iTunes' actual movie distribution model is before starting to bash it.
- Balanced, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Actually, I believe it's Digital Rights Management.
The simplest answer if it bothers you is to not buy it... And, as well, don't pirate it or otherwise consume the media. Let it fail in the marketplace.
Me, I can accept it as long as it's reasonable. iTMS works for me (sometimes) but the movie offerings don't really interest me, so far. I'd rather NetFlix the movie. - djscooterb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4My other issue with this price point is that for movie sized content, the convenience factor is gone. By the time I download the move over my 2 mbs connection, I could have driven somewhere and bought it for the same price (maybe a bit more). The $0.99 song model works because in 30 seconds I can have the song, or in 5 minutes a whole album. That makes it convenient and therefore a viable alternative to driving to the store. I haven't done the math, but depending on the compression scheme and rate, won't we be looking at multi-hour download times even for broadband home users?
I just don't see how this movie store thing is going to catch on unless the price is much better than I can get at the store, where I also get high quality, physical media. - Nicolasd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@kwilson
I think many people will buy what can be downloaded for free... The success for the iTMS is a proof of that. And I'd like to know how you can tell us when nothing's been officially announced that there won't be any bonuses with the movie downloads.
Don't take my comment the wrong way though... I also happen to think that 15$ is way too much as for a couple bucks more you could get a standard DVD... But for a flat fee of 10$ I might be tempted... Sure you'll find lots of old movies cheaper in bargain bins... But nobody's stopping you from buying them... But on the other hand... Most new movies come out around 20 so you'd be getting them at half the usual price... I can do without the actual DVD and box for that :-) - bobthedino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Reality Distortion Field
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reality_distortion_field - j_bellone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3But would you buy it if you were only allowed to watch them on Apple branded portable devices?
- Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Where does it say anything about them being 320x240? If they release a widescreen ipod, then you can be sure the movies will be higher res. I'm not sure what that means for the older ipods though. Perhaps that is why steve didn't want to call it the "video ipod" because only the "True" video ipods will play the movies when they come out.
- AdamJones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Pi and Requiem for a dream have my vote. Great movies, if you haven't seen them, i highly recommend them.
- phpfreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just think it's funny that Vongo is saying on their website that the reason they can't provide services for Mac customers is because Apple won't license FairPlay to them. What a fricken joke!
Who needs Vongo anyway? We're getting an iTunes Movie Store pretty soon, and I think its going to be better than everyone else thinks its going to be. Apple wouldn't start charging this much for a movie while users can go to other services and pay a lot less for a subscription model. - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2if the downloads are 720p or better they might be worth that price.
- Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can be pretty sure these will offer some way of watching on your tv via burn to dvd, streaming media box like airport express, or something else we haven't thought of yet.
- Ebeniz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0435761/
2008 release - uppedbyhiggins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So 9.99$ for an album is perfect, but 9.99 (or 14.99) for a feature length film isn't? I think the "99 CENTS PER SONG GREAT DEAL!" marketing is getting to people, because when I walk into any DVD retail store (chain or ma and pop store), DVD's are always overpriced (solid 20$). The only DVD's under ten bucks are Rush Hour and the Paulie Shore catalogue. But I'm sure if you marketed as 99 cents per DVD chapter, people would be gushing over this. That would actually be kind of neat...
Of course there's the argument that for a few dollars more (or in some cases, less) you can get the hard copy on DVD. But be real here, Apple is making a huge step forward. Now we just have to tackle DRM and we'll be in a digital utopia. - Caliente, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3whats RDF?
- uppedbyhiggins, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That's a great way to put it, in terms of movie ticket sales. It puts things into perspective and makes these prices actually seem reasonable.
- the_snitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Theres some good movies in that list - Requiem for a Dream and Saw are 2 of my favourites.
Lets hope they finally bring the store to New Zealand! Until then, I'm sorry hollywood, but its Bittorrent for me. - wrc_michael, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Where or what is the source for this information? Seems like speculation to me.
- gandubhalla, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I know that Lion's Gate slipped out info last month. Steve Jobs owns 7% of Disney after merging Pixar. I hope its true but it sucks that we wont get the Bond movies, Spiderman movies etc because the studio that owns them is Sony.
- gandubhalla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just read on a macnn forum that the writer of the article being dugg here is in the movie business as a production assistant.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Could you post a link to those HD movies from Netflix again?
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Basically I agree, if they aren't HD then it isn't really much to brag about. However they could be HD, in which case $14.99 isn't too bad.
720p or better, that pricepoint works for me, assuming the DRM isn't prohibitive. - mos6507, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5This is DOA until they start offering them in HD. Okay, maybe not a DOA, but at least nothing more than a curiosity. They are charging as much as a budget DVD with no bonus features and half the resolution. It's even worse than UMD.
- firemillen2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1question -
most of the movies are from disney/touchstone/pixar. most of these movies are for kids (preteen to toddlers). how many kids own an ipod and have the money and expertise to download a movie? how many of these kids will buy a video iPod? Don't these kids already have these movies on DVD?
Jobs got away with highway robbery when he got the music execs to agree to his itunes pricing and DRM. You think the movie studio execs will make the same mistake? lesson learned is my guess.
video ipods and owning of digital movies is not going to fly. not for the next 5 years. no change, no way, no how. - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"OOOOH Navy Seals... for my iPOD!!!"
Pay $15.00 for a movie that you can only watch on your iPOD...very Lame!
As stated before just go to the Wallmart bargain bin and get it for $5.00 to watch
where ever you want. - meekar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let's assume Apple can make it cheaper while gaining a profit. If so, then make them cheaper! It just makes them more appealing, unless of course 10-15 bucks is as cheap they can sell them while still keeping a profit.
You still make a good point zaren, I'm just saying... - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But what if they were HD?
- sdubois92, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I am the only person who doesn't give a ***** about DRM. Really, i dont mind it. 99 cents a song is a great deal. 2 bucks for a TV show is a great deal. 10 to 15 bucks for a movie is a great deal. To get it all working seamlessly with the iPod. Thats just a miracle.
itunes is the best music store out there. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I guess that's why Toy Story 3 has remained so secret. They're probably only going to release it on Apples iTunes store, which while an amazingly stupid idea, is still a somewhat smart marketing tool. It's not like Apple or Pixar cares, Steve Jobs owns both of them. But yea, seeing as how they only have a year to release it according to that list, a trailer has to be released very very soon (i was expecting attached to Ratatouille(i know i spelled it wrong, up yours) and more information would have to come out about it.
- mootymoots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Will we be able to download in the UK though - that is the question!!
As far as I can tell, we still can't get TV shows, months after its been available in the US :-( - Nicolasd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Hey... nothing's official yet... Could everyone just stop speculating over the resolution and/or eventual bonus features ???
- bbliss17, on 05/03/2008, -0/+1Why pay at all. lol
- j_bellone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Restrictive as in what? I'll tell you something - If I am only able to watch my movie on 4 computers, and only on Apple branded equipment I am not going to be buying movies from iTunes. They are going to start to bite the bullet and allowing for other companies to license Fairplay before I'll buy that.
- bbliss17, on 05/03/2008, -0/+1right I was wondering the same thing. torrent
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How about the 'Accidental Tourist... who bought the iPOD"?
lol! - bbliss17, on 05/03/2008, -0/+1torrent
