'''''''''''''''''''\_______________________________________________________ - rickcarson, on 12/17/2007, -3/+49This was okay, but many of the product releases didn't seem to have much to do with the stock graph.
In fact, looking at the graph, it would seem that the best thing Apple has done over the last years was to release iTMS for windows. WTF? And since iTMS is apparently relevant, how about a graph showing music revenue vs Mac revenue? Or even just revenue growth over time vs stock price rise over time?
If we're going to throw graphs around, there's another graph I've seen out there which is about how Apple's inflation adjusted prices for their machines have been trending downwards since the 90s. That would be interesting (because it would be going the other way).
The other problem with this graph is it is linear, which means that 10% price shifts when the price is around $200 look huge, compared to 10% price shifts when the price is $20. I'd focus on the period between 2000 and 2005. Maybe starting a little later than that. After all, looking at that graph it looks like the Cube almost killed Apple, yet a more likely explanation would be that the 2001 share market crash when the web bubble burst is too blame.
I think after 2005 the only people still saying that Apple would suddenly collapse and make all their predictions come true were whackos like Cringely and Dvorak.
// suddenly realises will be dugg down because of using more than two lines to reply. Well... dang... - brstilson, on 12/17/2007, -4/+29aaaaaaand once again, http://www.duggmirror.com proves it's utter worthlessness.
- ThinkBox, on 12/17/2007, -3/+20Thanks for your competent analysis of the information. We need more diggers like you, reading these things and responding in full.
The problem with long replies is that people arent here to learn, they are here to make jokes and "pwn" people. So when you have a long post, most the time, people look through it to find a spelling mistake or something you didnt talk about at full strength, and they tear it to peices. They use Ad Hominem attacks and internet meme humor vs logic and the appreciation of a well formed / expressed argument.
It starts with the little people. If you value quality in submissions and comments, then slowly, we can change the digg culture from what it is today into a strong informative society.
When is the last time you learned something in the digg comments, or felt that someone truly expressed a point of view, different from yours, and you admired them for it? I want these days to come again.
Digg on, Diggers! - inactive, on 12/17/2007, -1/+14RickCarson, you're missing a big piece of information in this graph: Apple has had TWO stock splits since 1997. One in June of 2000 and one in February of 2005. So adjusting for inflation would have very little relevance to this data. The Linear nature of the graph actually robs Apple of it's glory because when take in account the stock splits, Apple has actually had a 3,500% increase in value, which means that it is the second best performing stock of the last decade. Only one stock from the NYSE and Nasdaq has managed to outperform Apple during that time. Chico's FAS Inc., a specialty retailer of women's apparel, managed to rise nearly 3,800% during that same time. Thanks for trying to clarify the inaccuracies, but you've erred on the side of ignorance this time around. Please get all the facts before trying to calculate the big picture next time.
And furthermore, iTMS for Windows WAS important because Apple successfully tapped into the largest computer market to sell their iPods. While Apple doesn't actually make lots of money from iTunes, Windows support did encourage lots of people to buy iPods (which is where Apple actually makes lots of their money) and the change to Intel processors has pushed even more people to buy Macs, which corresponds perfectly to the upward trend we see in the graph.
BTW: I know all this because I own lots of shares in Apple. - aguynamedjoe36, on 12/17/2007, -4/+14"pieces"

- Alkivar, on 12/17/2007, -0/+8I still get the 403 error even going through google now. Or using IE or Opera... I think its blacklisting ips that came from digg.
- inactive, on 12/17/2007, -1/+9People often digg articles to read later - this is especially useful if it IS down at the time.
- drunkenoaf, on 12/17/2007, -1/+8Might it be possible that you don't have to invent something to start a revolution?
Visicalc + Apple II = spreadsheets and far less pesky arithmetic for small businesses. - Elranzer, on 12/17/2007, -1/+8iPod-for-Windows is to Apple what Pokemon is to Nintendo... the products that saved their asses A lot of people (fanboys) want to defy this and say it's their flagship products (Macs/N64) that saved their ass, but that's just not reality.
Also, if you think it was the Wii that saved Nintendo and not Pokemon Red/Blue... you're too young. - rhesuspieces00, on 12/17/2007, -0/+7I'm not going to bother hunting for a mirror of the article. The summary is total *****. While Apple in the mid 90s was a far cry from its late 80s glory days, they were never at risk of going out of business. Despite the media's love of the term "beleaguered" when describing Apple, they never had less than about US$4 Billion in liquid capitol assets. When Steve Jobs took over, the company was an unfocused but reasonably successful niche player in the PC market. By no stretch of the imagination was it "the walking dead."
Buried. - Urusai, on 12/17/2007, -0/+6The Apple ][ was no joke. Personal computers before then were hobbyist kits for strange nerds who lived in their parents' basements. The Apple ][ brought computing to strange nerds in general.
- nlevy, on 12/17/2007, -1/+6you must have pissed the internet off pretty bad. I would apologize.
- joshuaer, on 12/17/2007, -0/+4Most likely it is a cheap shared server running Linux not that Linux is the cause it is the shared server, that has to be the biggest problem with people hitting the front page on digg. So many of them have a cheap shared server plan running on a cheap server.
- sparkmonkeyz, on 12/17/2007, -0/+4I think digg should invest in some more servers to cache stories that hit the front, or come close, like the 30 most popular upcoming or something. It just needs to cache them long enough for people to realize the original is down and mirror it on a private server or something.
- erics4, on 12/17/2007, -0/+4dugg for quote "nerds living in their parents' bedrooms."
- captainchris, on 12/17/2007, -4/+7and i will tell the tale to my kids... "i was there when apple was on the front page of digg dot com".
- osage, on 12/17/2007, -0/+3mr smarty pants
- bubba9999, on 12/17/2007, -0/+3As a digg user, it's highly unlikely that you'll ever have kids to tell that to.
- joshuaer, on 12/17/2007, -0/+3well guess they do not want me to see it.

You don't have permission to access /2007/12/16/life-line/ on this server. - Dustmuffins, on 12/17/2007, -0/+2So... ANYONE have a mirror?
- Zippo, on 12/17/2007, -0/+2Damn, even Google didn't catch it.
- nlevy, on 12/17/2007, -1/+3grr. Now what?
I won't be able to sleep now not knowing how products effected apple stock. I think upwards but now I'll never be sure - brad016, on 12/17/2007, -1/+3This server obviously does not have the latest "Digg Effect" patch.
- Dylson, on 12/17/2007, -0/+2Because it's Apple, DUH!
- FTLJohnson, on 12/17/2007, -1/+3Would have been nice of you to create a mirror if that were true, wouldn't it have?
- cuj0, on 12/17/2007, -5/+7..down at 30 diggs
- osage, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1f that
- DelMonte, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1Cool, no way to see that graph, except that if you zoom in on the digg thumbnail of the page, you can almost decipher something out of the pixelized mess! Who knows, maybe one day digg thumbnails will be high-res enough that we don't even need a mirror/cache if the website goes down!
- PinkoComrade, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1And remember when you apologize don't think of it as a big truck
- MacParrot, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1I agree with what you said about Apple's finances which were far from being broke. They had however been losing money each quarter for quite some time and were putting out lackluster products. I remember the Performa/Centris/Quadra days with very little to differentiate the product lines other than software bundling. Now throw in Mac clones at prices Apple refused to compete with and you had all the makings of a financial disaster. Jobs gets most of the credit for the resurrection of Apple, but consider this; many of the policies that brought them back from the grave were not instituted by Steve Jobs but Gil Amelio. The iMac was already almost out the door when Jobs took over and it's that machine I attribute to the eventual successful return of Apple. Also remember that it was Amelio who made the decision to scrap the various OS projects in favor of using the NeXT OS as the basis of the next generation OS for the Mac. The iPod certainly had a lot to do with it, but when it was first pushed out the door it was Mac only and far too expensive for the average person.
Jobs has certainly been Apple number one cheerleader and Apple would be a very different company today without him but for those that want to give him all the credit for their return to profitability, remember the guys that came before that laid the groundwork. - Gijsterbeek, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1o yes it did
- vacuum2440, on 12/17/2007, -1/+2forbidden! well eff you right back!
- rickcarson, on 12/18/2007, -1/+2Dude. What would stock splits have to do with a graph of the price of hardware?
Put down the bong, step away from the keyboard. - Dustmuffins, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1Tried a proxy... no joy...
- rickcarson, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1You moron, it isn't my graph. Not my graph, not my fault.
- stalefries, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1Wow, the stock price has double since the iPhone was announced. That's a big jump.
- drunkenoaf, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1I think you're missing my point. I think the thumbs up scores say enough on the subject.
- Gijsterbeek, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1you might try to look the URL up with Google and then read it from google's cache
- lrdntwnd, on 12/17/2007, -2/+2not all hobby kits were built by nerds living in their parents' bedrooms. My dad built a few and he was married and living quite far from home at the time. Check your facts next time. Or, just avoid making gross generalizations and everything will be A-OK.
- inactive, on 12/17/2007, -1/+1It's only forbidden if you go there FROM DIGG.
I immediately went to Google, then pasted the link. I was able to view the page. - Nossie, on 12/17/2007, -1/+1wait.... you mean you actually think people act rationally here and not just through fanboism or crowd mentality?
So when did you get off the slashdot boat? - inactive, on 12/17/2007, -1/+1No, you're missing my point. You to claimed to have seen another graph that showed that Apple machines were in a downtrend, if calculated for inflation. My point, on the other hand, is that the graph would actually show that Apple was in an UPWARD trend if properly calculated, due to the stock splits. So you're correct in saying the graph is wrong, but not for the right reasons.
- inactive, on 12/17/2007, -1/+1I'm not saying it's your graph. I'm just saying your assertions about what MAKES the graph wrong are wrong.

- tupperbacharach, on 12/17/2007, -0/+0Sorry. The link to the photo of the pre-teens using the Alto got omitted when I pasted it into the Digg window. Here is the photo: http://toastytech.com/guis/altokids.jpg
- dudup, on 12/17/2007, -2/+2Completely true!
- valkyries, on 12/17/2007, -1/+1and even when the server is flat lined, people are still digging this...

What is Digg?
