- whatthefu, on 11/30/2007, -27/+113Vista works well for me. But no one cares or seems to want it to :(
- streak, on 11/30/2007, -36/+90"Even our own reviewer, who loves Leopard, says not to upgrade until 10.5.1. And now that Apple has coughed that up, he'll probably say to wait for 10.5.2. Or .3."
Instead of putting your whining words in their mouth, why don't you let the reviewer speak for him/herself?
Leopard works well for me. For instance, I see very few spinning beach balls anymore. Connectivity is much better. Mail.app is much better. I wouldn't be surprised if this guy's troubles are due to a bad DIMM, where Leopard exercises memory more than Tiger does. - virtualball, on 11/30/2007, -19/+69Hmm... my Leopard is doing fine. In fact, I think my Wi-Fi is better now then it was before :/ I can now pick up my neighbor's wi-fi *shhh* :)
Then again I have a Core Duo MacBook with 2 GB RAM and others with lower specs might have problems :(
EDIT: Woo! Safari works again with Digg - matthafling, on 11/30/2007, -16/+50User error
guy probably could crash an etch-a-sketch - lazloman, on 11/30/2007, -26/+59I've had Leopard since its release date on a first generation iMac G5 and have had no crashes and I don't see many post or articles supporting his point of view. My wife noticed almost immediately that it was fast than Tiger. Fancy that, install a new OS and the computer gets faster. That will NEVER happen on an MS OS.
- toetagger, on 11/30/2007, -48/+79I have had too many problems to list. I just deleted Leopard and reinstalled Tiger. I miss a couple of features such as quicklook and stacks... but I love my stable Tiger. Under Leopard, my entire OS would lock up if I tried to turn off Bluetooth...etc...etc...etc... TM? Forget it.. fail, fail, fail. I'll revisit it in a few months after a couple of updates...
- AXNJAXN, on 11/30/2007, -16/+47I have my Ubuntu disc right here if anyone wants to borrow it...
- Beatmiser, on 11/30/2007, -14/+40Should it matter?
- yourmightyruler, on 11/30/2007, -10/+35Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. Everyone is covering their ears and ignoring the fact that Vista can be stable if you choose the right settings. People are just annoyed with the fact that they have to set the settings themselves.
I have to give Vista this though. It did find my networked printer faster than my 3 XP machines. It didn't even need the IP address of the printer. It just found it. And CS3 loads a lot faster thanks to superfetch. - inactive, on 11/30/2007, -7/+30My favorite from his rant: "Leoptard."
Regarding stability, I'm sure 10.5 will be just fine on new hardware, as is Vista on my Dell Inspiron 1420. If the 1420 had come installed with XP, I would never have considered installing a Vista upgrade. I upgraded my Pismo's 9 to10.2 then to 10.3, but that was to keep current with some apps I love. That is the only good argument for upgrading the OS on older hardware, even recent systems, IMHO. - kingfoot, on 11/30/2007, -22/+45i dont even have the 10.5.1 update, and ive had NO problems. did you have it on an intel mac?
- joank, on 11/30/2007, -7/+28I care.
- hendzen, on 11/30/2007, -5/+25I too love vista, no problems here, and I'm loving the memory prefetch. When people complain about Vista's Ram usage, I ask, why did you buy all that Ram if you didn't want to be used, in an ideal operating system, all resources would be used as much as possible(within the realm of efficiency)
- superkendall, on 11/30/2007, -16/+36I can see some of what he says, but I disagree strongly on a few points:
1) I have not had Leopard crash yet, on several systems. System stability to me seems as good. Personally I think wireless stability is even a little better, but that's always hard to really nail down.
2) He criticizes Leopard for needless UI changes, but as examples gives things from Vista that Microsoft made worse (like networking setup) but that Leopard has made much better. Printer dialog, Networking, Sharing, all are examples of much improved configuration dialogs... so really what he's on about is added transparency, and though I can see some point to that the overall UI improvements are still pretty good.
3) He's dead wrong about Time Machine, in fact there's nothing there he got right. If you want a backup system real people can use you can't have them specify the locations of things they WANT to back up, because they will miss something key every time and the backup will only be half useful. You don't want to restore the system from the install DVD because then restore will take 10x longer, and you'll also miss key customizations you might have made to the system in the meantime AND have to reinstall a bunch of system updates. And lastly, TM works over network shares just fine - you just have to have a Mac sharing the drives used for backup and have had it already designated as a TM drive from that system. It's true an Airport with drive sharing cannot yet be used directly (with a simple hack it can be) but that doesn't mean it's not possible. And I don't see what he's going on about the restore portion being confusing, it seems plenty clear to me. - Wang, on 11/30/2007, -5/+25here here
- madmatter23, on 11/30/2007, -2/+20Perfect Example!
As I read somewhat skeptically through this article, I thought: "Hey, I should have some tunes on while I read." I click on iTunes. Nothing opens. Click on iTunes... Application not responding. Force quit. Does not quit. Apple -> Force Quit -> "Are you sure you want to force quit?", "Yes" -> Does not quit. I now have to restart leopard to listen to a song. I didn't even make it through the article without leopard causing me problems. - Goodbyeworld, on 11/30/2007, -10/+28I've been using leopard all day every day since it first came out, and nothing this guy is saying is familiar to me. No crashes, none of that stuff.
The complaints about the overly-glitzy UI have been made about every version of OS X since 10.0. Everything new is useless eye candy compared to what was there before. OK, maybe true, but nothing new to Leopard. That's just the Way of Steve.
I'm no Apple fanboy/defender in general, but in this particular case I can't help thinking this guy is mostly just desperate for attention. - gabogab, on 11/30/2007, -4/+18Not to be a pain in the ass with details, but using the term "service pack" when referring to a mac tells me that he is not really a Mac user.
- ZeusofMontreal, on 11/30/2007, -30/+44I install Leapord on my MacPro, and I have had so many hangs and freezes. At this point I will wait for the proper service pack, and for now I am using bootcamp to go into my Vista partition to work.
- streak, on 11/30/2007, -9/+22Oh, yeah, and Time Machine works great on all of my Macs, many of which are backing up to an officially unsupported Infrant ReadyNAS. (Not that I care much for the ReadyNAS, it's so terribly slow even over gigabit ethernet, but it cost too much to replace).
- humpy, on 11/30/2007, -3/+16Gayest. Analogies. Ever.
- NerveBand, on 11/30/2007, -12/+25My goodness, you know how to exagerrate.
First off, I am running Vista on a four year old pc with 512 mb of ram. Now you know what? It might not be as fluid as I want it to be but its much more snappier than XP. And second off, the update that Apple released was not a service pack, so try that one again. A service pack by Microsoft includes many incremental changes that have been sent over as individual updates, all compiled into one. What apple released was an update.
And don't say that Leopard doesn't have any bugs. You can't simply ignore them. Runtime performance HAS been an issue at times with some of the old PowerPC configurations.
Btw, I have aero enabled and I'm still going fast.
Look, I don't want to doubt Leopard but stop praising it. It has its ups and downs. Just like Vista. Why can't you accept that? - inactive, on 11/30/2007, -5/+17what!...wait....Mac's crash!....Tiger.(XP) better than Leopard (Vista}.....deja vu all over again.....
- superkendall, on 11/30/2007, -7/+19Leopard is also fine on my four year old desktop, and all all systems I installed it on was faster than Tiger.
- tolbs, on 11/30/2007, -4/+16I have a Revision A Mac Book Pro (about 1.5 years old), I've been running on Leopard since release, and I just received a Lenovo Thinkpad X61s (I'm a total Thinkpad fanboy :) ) w/ Vista Business in the beginning of October. I use each device about equally and I just think this guy is stretching as far as he can to spread FUD. Sure, there is some truth to some of what he says, but it's no where near as bad of an experience as Vista has been in contrast to XP. Leopard has been out for about 2 months now, where Vista has been out for a year and I can tell you that I am far less frustrated w/ Leopard then I am w/ Vista. Leopard in fact runs better for me than Tiger, it could just be that i'm not using the Apps that are having issues.
- rupertmorris, on 11/30/2007, -7/+19I've had no problems with Leopard, but I also have no problems with those that do. That sucks that his Leopard machine crashes 6 times in a month... something's definitely up.
He's entitled to his opinion, and I've read so many 'gushing' reviews it's refreshingly different to read a bitter rant. I tend to agree with hi when he posits that perhaps he drank too much coffee that morning, though. - iNunchuk, on 11/30/2007, -3/+14I'd only validate his argument if someone told me that when Tiger came out, it had no crashes as well.
- wentwj, on 11/30/2007, -17/+28In the risk of being repetitive, I've had 0 problems with Leopard. While I acknowledge that some people have had problems with it, I think those that have had problems with Leopard are a much smaller minority than those that have had problems with Vista (two BIG MS fanboys at work both hate Vista)
- Platypus3333, on 11/30/2007, -0/+11I only hope one day we will mature to the point where we realize that it is acceptable to use either Leopard or Vista, use of one does not detract from the other, and that neither is as horrible as people like to flame about.
- GothAlice, on 11/30/2007, -18/+28Absolutely zero trouble here. Just like the site says, for me, it just works. In fact, I've noticed quite the speed improvement in the applications I use, like Aperture. Added features for us internet workers like the resident SSH key manager (using Keychain) are lifesavers.
- Ocelot13, on 11/30/2007, -4/+14since when is an update a service pack? theres been many updates for vista
- wordfan, on 11/30/2007, -5/+15XP with SP2 almost never crashes.
- GothAlice, on 11/30/2007, -10/+20Bad, or he's an idiot.
- matdevdug, on 11/30/2007, -5/+14I have been running Leopard since Beta and no issues have arisen. I am not a fanboy and actually enjoy some of Vista's ideas but I really don't know what he is talking about. The dock is a little annoying but the RAM requirements for Leopard from Tiger went from 256 to 512. Thats not really a jump considering that all Apple systems right now ship with at least 1 gig.
This guy reminds me of those old tech repair guys who are still running 98. What does he want? The modern users want a computer that has a UI that is both pretty and functional without taking up too many resources. Time Machine is a great application and while I agree that Vistas is more powerful Time Machine is much easier to use for most users. The whole point of Time Machine was to create a system that made is easy for the average home user to start doing what they have never done before which is backup files. - MerlintheTuna, on 11/30/2007, -5/+14Yeah. It's not like a guy that's been working for reputable computer magazine for 15 years would know anything about computers. By the way, "user error" really isn't a very promising diagnosis, given how vigorously Apple screams the word "usability" at every opportunity.
And isn't an etch-a-sketch the easiest thing in the world to crash? I mean... you move it. Done. - streak, on 11/30/2007, -0/+8did you perform a fresh install or upgrade install. if upgrade, you may be suffering from outdated 3rd party drivers you've installed over the months and years with Tiger.
- djpants428, on 11/30/2007, -5/+13I'm currently running leopard on 4 different machines. I have not had any real issues with it. My automounts from a windows share don't work right, but that's done at a directory level and I can't mess with it. The only problems I've had with any of my machines lately has to do with a server load issue. I'm not sure where all these leopard bugs are coming from, I've seen none of them.
- MyxoFish, on 11/30/2007, -0/+7I think most of you are forgetting that not everyone has the same experience with ANY Operating System.
- Thumper13, on 11/30/2007, -1/+8Funny, when I say the same thing about Vista people hate all over me. I've got no probs with Vista on two machines. Love it and it's faster than XP on my laptop.
enjoy wondering what others are doing wrong. - Bob042, on 11/30/2007, -4/+11Leopard is extremely stable for me. It has not had absolutely 0 issues, my keyboard froze once for a minute until I closed/opened the laptop. My wireless wasn't showing networks, but works fine with 10.5.1. However, everything is improved, boots and runs faster, and a few bugs from tiger like the dashboard randomly dying have gone away, even though I did an upgrade, not a clean install.
All the new features work just fine for me, time machine, stacks, upgraded mail.app, all the "little things" really make a difference.
Far, far, more positives than the couple quirks. But really, it wasn't absolutely 100% quirk free on tiger either, and I don't think "It just works" means "absolutely nothing can go wrong ever or Apple is pure evil and lies". - zerodaysoon, on 11/30/2007, -0/+7i love vista too! havent had a problem or glitched since i got it, very fast, faster than XP and more stable :-) ur not alone
omg! i can comment again!! yeay! - kenplaysviola, on 11/30/2007, -6/+13I've had problems with 10.5 and 10.5.1. I joined it to an Windows Server 2003 Active Directory and now my local account log in takes forever. Also, my domain users cannot log in until I have locally logged in, and then it gives me the option to log in as another user.
Also SAMBA is not working correctly when trying to connect to a Windows share. I can read files, but I get some input/output file errors if I try to save and write to the disk.
Other than that, it seems to be a great (stand-alone) OS - gcnaddict, on 11/30/2007, -1/+8That's why they call it "the best consumer operating system available." Way to go. The fact that they posted a favorable review of Leopard should cork your mouth shut.
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2223014,00.as ... - michaeljdennis, on 11/30/2007, -7/+14Never had a problem with vista.
- rwhiffen, on 11/30/2007, -1/+8In the multiple kernel panic club myself, I'm tempted to go back to Tiger myself. I have an app, iBlog that doesn't work either, so I'm really regretting charging out and upgrading so early on both machines. I've had 7 panics traced to com.apple.driver.AirPort.Atheros, 2 traced to IOBluetoothHIDDriver and one to Parallels.
Buggy kitty... 10.5.1 didn't help at all.
I'd downgrade to 10.4, but I'm hooked on some of the leopard features, like spaces, new Mail.app, piles make great doc menus IMHO, per-connection proxy settings (no proxy for wifi at home, SOX proxy for ethernet at work...WOOOT)... Love TimeMachine the author can blow it out is ass on his TM rant... Try to restore a single mail message in any of the other backup tools he mentioned. Not so easy. It's a snap in TM, you launch mail (or any other TM enabled app like address book, iphoto '08) and then click time machine and you get a app-specific restore view. Now THAT's awsome.
Anyway, of all the 10.x releases I've used (and I've used them all on various hardware) this has the same lack of polish that 10.0 had. Must have transfered all the good coders to the iPhone... - theMetalEdge, on 11/30/2007, -1/+8For those that are having problems with Leopard, visit http://www.macfixit.com as they tend to post many solutions & workarounds for any bugs that may plague Mac OS X. I hope this helps those that are experiencing any problems.
- quidpro, on 11/30/2007, -2/+8Right. Never seen ONE good review of Apple products in PCMag. Or one ad...
