- MtheoryX, on 10/31/2007, -11/+88Here's a simple answer:
if ((you == like_features) && (your_bank_account >= price_of_upgrade))
{
upgrade;
}
else
{
dont_upgrade;
} - pwallroth, on 10/30/2007, -3/+44I would rather upgrade my cat to a leopard. That would be far more satisfying.
- ozydingo, on 11/01/2007, -0/+20For a million bucks? *****, I'd use Windows ME for a million bucks!
- AmusedToDeath, on 10/30/2007, -2/+17That's good. These days Microsoft needs all the help it can get.
- ramsinks.com, on 10/30/2007, -0/+13Yes, it's even hard to type with all the extra speed.
- RunnerOne, on 10/30/2007, -5/+16Probably about the same timeframe that you learn to use the shift and period keys? Nice way to get yourself completely ignored.
- HerrEisenheim, on 10/30/2007, -0/+10Issues I've run into so far (with a clean install):
1) Flip4Mac will not allow you to register with a clean install unless you use the Flip4Mac Beta. Problem with a missing eSellerate engine.
2) Pixen 3.0 does not workâat all. You must use 3.1b.
3) A lot of icons for 3rd party apps are low resolution in Coverflow view.
4) Repair Permissions (Disk Utility) takes FOREVER (5 to 20 minutes, depending on system), and returns an error about ARDagent.app and ACL on "Applications".
5) Since AIImageViewWithImagePicker is disabled (or non-existent) on 10.5, applications which used it (ie. Adium), now have that functionality disabled.
6) You must make SURE that you tell Time Machine to omit the directory for a VM using VMWare Fusion and Windows Vista. If you have a Windows Vista VM running while Time Machine attempts to backup, it will freeze both the virtual machine and the backup procedure, and may corrupt your entire VM.
7) Verify Disk (Disk Utility) also takes forever.
8) For some reason, holding down "C" at startup to boot do a CD does NOT work with an Intel Core Duo iMac (Gen. 1) and the new wired Apple Keyboard.
9) Miro v0.9.9.1 and v0.9.9.9rc0 return an AttributeError at startup (but still functions). v0.9.9.1 does not properly save the "Run Miro at startup" preferences in Miro's preferences. v0.9.9.9rc0 does.
10) The PDF printer for Adobe Acroboat Professional (and select versions of the Adobe Creative Suite 3 that include it) is currently broken. Expected fix is January '08. There are other problems with select applications in CS3, although they are mostly for video editing applications and I have Web Premium, so I can't tell you about those.
#4 seems to be a widespread issue (not sure I'm ready to call it a "problem"). I believe everyone who has done the Apple Remote Desktop update via Software Update is affected. The Apple Discussion Forums are littered with people asking about the issue. The reason everything takes so long is because Disk Utility has not been updated to use the new indexing system used by Spotlight.
#8 is particularly perplexing to me. - maclaxguy, on 10/30/2007, -1/+8...and they say that macs have fanboys.... There's not much I _wouldn't_ do for a million dollars.
- burke, on 11/06/2007, -0/+6Ruby is better:
upgrade if you.like_features and you.bank.balance >= leopard.price - ramsinks.com, on 10/30/2007, -0/+6Soooo much faster on a Core than Tiger = yes.
(at least for it is, that that alone is worth it) - rowlodge, on 10/30/2007, -2/+8had panther, just got tiger, happy.
- mentor972, on 10/30/2007, -0/+5YES. Get it. Hands down, worth the money. Simple, painless install. Lots of new features. Do it.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/30/2007, -0/+5"the day i stop supporting microsoft is the day i die"
Damn, I doubt there are many Microsoft employees with that kind of dedication. - dreaz, on 10/30/2007, -0/+4I'd say only upgrade if you really want to check out the new stuff like time machine, but if Tiger is working just fine for you I'd wait until some problems are fixed with Parallels and things like that.
- lightningrod220, on 10/30/2007, -1/+5Try the OSX86 project. It sounds like they managed to hack it on launch day. They're working to make it easier and clean it up a bit. It also only currently works with Intel chips.
- kolop1, on 10/30/2007, -1/+5I don't see any difference yet. I upgraded yesterday.
- ucg1, on 10/30/2007, -0/+4But not for more than a year.
- norman619, on 10/30/2007, -1/+5I hope you were kidding. You should use whatever OS suits your needs best not out of some misguided sense of loyalty.
- fugazied, on 10/29/2007, -0/+4I have a newish mac (macbook pro), it is noticably faster and some of the new features are simply incredible.
Worth the money just for the new spotlight (soo fast this thing is like voodoo), spaces, stacks, upgraded terminal! - uppedbyhiggins, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3Agreed, Leopard is a significantly better than Tiger on my Mac Pro.
- ramsinks.com, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3lol, you installed vista..
- benny87, on 10/30/2007, -3/+6The point of the article was to point out incompatibilities and problems that still exist in Leopard, not to debate the value of the software itself.
If you use your mac professionally and have the money to upgrade and would like to, it still might not be a good idea due to these problems. - wilhel1812, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3everything does run faster, i'm suprised
- jstene, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3This article is a crock. I installed Leopard on my MDD dual 867, 1 GB RAM. I run a ton of legacy apps including Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. Everything works flawlessly making this one of the most reliable and error free Mac OS X upgrades I've installed yet.
- crackedplastic, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3Sorry rowlodge, you tiger now.
- davidrools, on 10/30/2007, -3/+6So upgrading to leopard breaks a lot of software? Sounds suspiciously like another recently released operating system I heard of...
- dagamer34, on 10/29/2007, -0/+3I upgraded and never looked back.
- burke, on 11/07/2007, -0/+3Bah, syntax error, then I ran out of time to fix it.
upgrade if you.like_features? unless you.broke? - inactive, on 10/30/2007, -1/+4If you have a high end machine (Mac Pro, Macbook Pro or high end iMac), get it, no question, you'll probably see a performance boost like I did, but on older or lower end machines it seems like it might end up being more taxing to run because of the new graphics, but who knows.
- Powerdrift, on 11/06/2007, -0/+3you.like_features? would be nicer
- sq2shooter, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3I did not have plans to upgrade by the wife handed me a Leopard disc this morning for my birthday. Install was easy although the Time Machine software takes a long time to set up the first image. Expect to give up about 6 gigs with a full Leopard install.
- keithzd, on 10/29/2007, -0/+2I have it, I love it. Parallels runs better than before.
- KnightWhoSaysNi, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2On my machine, Parallels crashes the OS as soon as I try to start a VM.
- klaupacius, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2Did an archive & install, no problems. Love it so far. Biggest complaints a few programs not compatible just yet, see http://guides.macrumors.com/List%3AApplications_No ...
- newbill123, on 10/29/2007, -0/+2So TUAW's big conclusion is: if you depend on your Mac, don't make a big change. Well, that goes for your car, your insurance, or your breakfast cereal, too. More helpful would have been to say what precautions should be taken (e.g. a full backup) and what time is going to be involved to get things back to "the way things were" if it all goes to hell in a hand basket (a two hour restore).
They recommend dual booting to investigate Leopard on a part time basis, but don't bother to mention that this is going to confuse the hell out of FSEvent based services like Spotlight and Time Machine that will basically rebuild everything after they realize unknown changes may have occurred. So if every dual boot lags your mac with these rebuilding duties, you're not exactly going to see representative performance.
Stirring fear about making changes to your computer is wrong. If you can upgrade to Leopard on your own terms and at your own pace, then you are in control of your tools and not the other way around. Is it better to ignore Leopard until your Tiger (or Panther, or Classic) Mac fails and you're forced to adjust to it by buying a new machine? - MrDo, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2Welcome, you must be new here.
- MtheoryX, on 10/29/2007, -0/+2Um...PHP variables don't need to be declared. You lose....Exiting...
- vertinox, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2Zune? Why not just buy a Wii?
- gordeh, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2I've upgraded and apart from one random crash from mail, nothing bad has happened. Having used Vista since launch I've had no end of problems with that.
- zweben, on 10/29/2007, -0/+2I have the same computer except with 1.5GB RAM, and i'd say if anything it's running faster than Tiger. 720p videos now are pretty watchable, a little better frame rate than before, and applications seem to launch significantly faster.
- Vermifax, on 10/29/2007, -0/+2If you depend on Digidesign's Pro Tools to make a living, then you should wait.
I hate Pro Tools but some of my clients love it. I'm hearing that Logic Pro 8 (my weapon of choice) runs soooo much better on Leopard but, I can't upgrade the stucdio Mac yet. THe office iMacs on the other hand....sweeeet! - burke, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2Wait, I dugg you up, but it turns out I'm an idiot too. Do any of those look like PHP variables to you? I must have missed the dollar signs...
...and the 'functions' don't have parentheses... let's just call this C-style pseudocode. - NovaSupreme, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2best comment of the day.. alas, digg doesnt see the humor :-)
- neowip, on 10/29/2007, -0/+1Overall good upgrade. Can't say that I notice a big speedboost but it's snappy on my Macbook Pro 2.33, 2Gig ram.
Love the new finder, Spaces is awesome. Stacks.... not sure yet. iChat and screen sharing is great.
Not working
- Volume Logic iTunes plugin, which won't ever be supported cause the company stopped supporting it.
- Last.fm had problems and i removed it for now.
- iLike plugin for iTunes
- Smart select in Parallels, cause the XP diskimage won't mount. So there is no way to directly access the Windows partition from the mac side. Drag and drop does work, no issues there. - burke, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1removed
- callsignVIPER17, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1hmmm...so basically this article is just saying don't upgrade at all?...wow I was hoping for something a little more helpful...maybe something like fi you have a power book g4, don't upgrade because it will run too slow?...maybe something like that...guess I was shooting at the moon though when I was hoping for that...oh well...
- mrBitch, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1you have to actually install it to see any differences...
- mrogi, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1Who da ***** wants an OS that dont allow ya to right click? ***** Leopard. Long live Windows Vista Ultimate. Bill Gates is the Lamb of God...Biaatch.
- sam10685, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1had panther; got tiger when it came out; still happy as a clam. maybe when OS 10.6 hits.
