- hotdamn, on 11/16/2007, -1/+24the same exact list of fixes is on Apple's homepage and it was on the frontpage yesterday. Gizmodo blogspam galore.
- pyrates, on 11/16/2007, -0/+22Either way, fixing bugs is a good thing. I like it when Apple and Microsoft fix them.
- super_spyder, on 11/16/2007, -4/+24http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306 ... like this?
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306 ... - treed, on 11/16/2007, -14/+30That's because it only took Apple a few weeks.
- agilligan, on 11/16/2007, -1/+14To avoid the blogspam: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306 ...
- kkiran, on 11/16/2007, -4/+17Plenty of fixes! No TImemachine wireless backup yet though...
- mentor972, on 11/16/2007, -11/+23I'm pretty sure Leopard IS better than Vista. Vista makes me want to throw up in my mouth.
- duckyinc, on 11/16/2007, -6/+15This is because diggers hate Microsoft. If Microsoft announced they will be publicly show their bugs, increase storage for hotmail, remove advertising from live search and so on diggers will still hate MS (because they think Linux is awesome and both can't co-exist)
- mentor972, on 11/16/2007, -5/+13No, still pretty sure Vista licks balls
- mentor972, on 11/16/2007, -6/+13It still just works. Nothing in Leopard stops me from doing my job or getting actual work done. Windows did daily, so I switched.
FACE!!!!! - inactive, on 11/16/2007, -0/+7I'd really like to see them fix their directory integration. especially with AD.
- monospaced, on 11/16/2007, -2/+9Mac OS is better
- MacParrot, on 11/16/2007, -0/+6That's mostly correct. The bigger reason for the 150 million in non-voting stock was for Apple to FINALLY drop all the patent issues they were suing Microsoft for (that Apple was going to eventually lose anyway) and agree to cross-licensing on some tech they were both interested in. It was a win-win for both as it got Apple some much needed good publicity and a commitment from MS to continue Office for the Mac. It was a win for Microsoft as well as it kept the monopolist hounds at bay by having a valid competitor and MS has made quite a bit of cash over the years selling software to Mac users. MS also made a good chunck of change when they later resold the stock at a profit.
Apple didn't need the money in 1997 as they still had plenty of cash reserves, but were bleeding profusely with quarter after quarter of losses. Without the deal I doubt Apple would have gone out of business, but would be a very different company than they are today. - bcorder, on 11/16/2007, -1/+7Okay, i'm as much an apple fan boy as the next apple user. I enjoy their products and software. While Leopard is great for a x.0 release there were number of issues seem to be lack of polish or lack of time. The speed of the .1 update tells me that it was rolled out knowing it had issues and they just took the time during pressing and distribution and launch to squash as many as possible.
My greatest disappointment (and it's relatively minor) is the loss of a few features that were initially hyped (DFS for one).
It's still a great OS. And I'm not looking back. It will be interesting to see as they continue to gain significant market share if they can maintain their image of polish, refinement and style in everything they do. - MacParrot, on 11/16/2007, -0/+5Wow! You say that just like you matter!
- samdu, on 11/16/2007, -0/+5Seriously. How often are people repairing permissions?!?!?
- HypocriteDigg, on 11/16/2007, -3/+8Oh yeah, except it DIDN'T fix some of those things for Time Machine and Disk Utility! Including the Time Machine hanging during backup, progress bar in Disk Utility, and tons of errors repairing permissions in Disk Utility.
- mlostracco, on 11/16/2007, -1/+6I have never seen anyone claim they don't.
- inkswamp, on 11/16/2007, -0/+5The only people I hear repeating this "it just works" meme are bitter Windows fans trying to stereotype Mac users. I don't know a single Mac user who believes that Macs "just work," including me. They break just like any other computer, but the critical difference is that they are *much* easier to get back up and running after a problem.
- natenovs, on 11/16/2007, -1/+6they released updates once a month. its called patch tuesday, and everyone bitches about it.
- dhmlco, on 11/16/2007, -11/+16That's not a change log, just a list of featured updates. Apple would do much better for its customers, however, if it were to publish a complete change log for every OS and software update.
- Radan, on 11/16/2007, -1/+6Don't you Windoze-fanboys have nothing better to do? If you are going to troll, at least do it properly, just please spare me the "LOL U SUK! PWND!" kind of comments, as it will only make you look even more retarded than you already do. And why the freaking hell do you always insist of making every single discussion which has anything to do with either Mac, PC, Linux or my toaster into a Mac vs PC war? I personally find Leopard as the best system out there, some doesn't, you are bloody retarded monkey, but I still respect you for that.
Now, get off my Internets, before I release the hounds! - Bitaemo, on 11/16/2007, -2/+7I wish they would have addressed the issue of mounting external USB drives that are partitioned NTSF. Since Leopard upgrade, I still cant mount my Seagate Freeagent. Ive tried Macfuse, Catacombe, etc, and editing my fstab to force mount it, but no luck. Cmon Apple, theres more work to be done.
- DaffyDuck, on 11/17/2007, -0/+4"They just work" does not mean they don't have bugs. I know that's too complex of a concept for you to understand.
- schneb, on 11/16/2007, -2/+6Still a problem for me.
Spotlight begins its search on the entire drive by default, rather than the folder you are currently viewing.
Custom folder views become the new default when you click the back button.
No size or hide/view control over left navigation window.
Automator 2 has multiple bugs, flawed execution, and undependable results.
More focus on eye-candy and elimination of Tiger features (resembling Vista vs. XP)
Dymo printer cannot be used.
iKey now unstable.
Going back to Tiger till all this is ironed out. - Bitaemo, on 11/16/2007, -0/+4Yeah I did an update from 10.4.11 (It was at 11 wasnt it?). I've heard other people who did clean installs had no issues. I might end up backing it all up and doing that this weekend. And yes, I did try ther NTFS-3G driver. Thanks for the suggestion though.
- monospaced, on 11/16/2007, -0/+4WTF did you do to your Mac, man?
- coldfusion1970, on 11/16/2007, -0/+4I think thats probably his problem.
Major OS updates work better if you back-up, erase and install. Rather than updating ontop of 10.3 or 10.4. - Rupan, on 11/16/2007, -0/+4Buried since original article had changelog on apple site.
- samdu, on 11/16/2007, -1/+5Which is also not ideal. If there's an issue, and you have a patch, release it. Don't wait for some arbitrary day every month. I realize that this was supposed to make things easier on Sys Admins, but it's really not. Sys Admins can control when patches are installed anyway, without MS doing it for them. And it certainly hasn't increased the reliability of the updates themselves.
- coldfusion1970, on 11/16/2007, -1/+5So email the manufacturers of the Dymo printer software and the iKey software to update their wares.
I love Leopard and use it at home and work. I would be hard pressed to go back to Tiger. - bearda, on 11/16/2007, -0/+3Isn't that the exact same list of "featured updates"?
- MacParrot, on 11/16/2007, -1/+4I don't think diggers all hate Microsoft. Heck, I've been accused of being one the worst Mac Fanboys out there and I don't hate Microsoft. I use their products everyday (XP at work and MS Office as well as MS Office for the Mac at home) and enjoy them. Even with iWork at a tolerable level of usefulness, I'll be buying MS Office for the Mac 2008 at some point next year. You really should stop thinking in absolutes.
- jkoke, on 11/16/2007, -1/+4Buried for all caps.
- signal15, on 11/16/2007, -5/+8Where's the real change log? This one is dumbed down.
- samdu, on 11/16/2007, -0/+3A certain "evil empire" does that on a regular basis.
- inkswamp, on 11/16/2007, -0/+3Both companies release products with standing issues, not doubt about that, but how much longer are Vista users going to be waiting for SP1? The problem isn't that the products are released with bugs. It's just that one company seems to get right on top of fixing them while the other drags its feet like an angry kid. Perhaps if MS had an update waiting in the wings right after Vista's release, your comment would make sense, but as it is, it just comes off like sour grapes.
- JoeOReilly, on 11/17/2007, -0/+2I guess that was an poor attempt at sarcasm.
- Iwantawii, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2That has to be on the way. I've been using 10.5.1 for only one day, but so far the usability with my Airport Extreme Base Station is greatly improved over 10.5.0. It was notoriously flaky before, but so far has been rock solid. I would imagine that once this is the case for everyone, and consistently, then there would be little reason to hold back enabling TimeMachine to work with it.
I don't think the developers really foresaw the number of users that would want wireless connectivity to hard disks, from personal experience I can attest that Finder, iTunes (FrontRow of course too), and iPhoto do not operate fluidly when working with files on a network drive. iTunes, for example, lags hardcore when adding/managing files although playback works alright, even with video. Things are fast and snappy locally (thanks to better threading in Leopard), but once a network drives is in the picture there's quite alot of beach ball. - freshyill, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2Doesn't fix the AWFUL Expose and Spaces bug. I'm not sure what causes it, but it was fine under Tiger. Now, If I've been up and running for a while and I've got more than a few windows open, it's slow to start, slow to move, very choppy, and the windows usually go right back into place as soon as they're expanded, as if I was holding down the key and then released it. It's a huge inconvenience. I find myself command+tabbing to switch apps, which doesn't help much when I've got 20 windows open in Photoshop.
- thesledman, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2I got a new iMac on Leopard release weekend. It had Tiger pre-installed and included a Leopard "Drop-in" DVD. After playing around in tiger for a few hours and transferring my iTunes library I updated/upgraded to Leopard. No trouble mounting and reading NTFS USB drives at all. Even a partitioned USB drive with MAC/FAT/NTFS mounted as 3 distinct drives without a hitch. Since Tiger was pre-installed I am assuming that i upgraded. However the upgrade was over a clean install of Tiger, maybe that had something to do with it. As with windows there are always issues when upgrading opposed to a clean install. Nothing beats a clean install.
- samdu, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2What's wrong with Spaces? Works on my MacBook just fine and dandy. Though I do kind of miss the motion sensitive screen switching from VirtuaDesktop.
- norcalscan, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2And your Macs are running 10.3 or 10.4, not 10.5. Leopard and AD integration is broken right now. Not sure how 10.5.0 got out the gate with that not working, let alone 10.5.1 not fixing it.
- Firehed, on 11/16/2007, -2/+4Yes. Apple clearly plagiarized from Gizmodo, having not provided a citation link to their original post.
Oh, wait... - inactive, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1Yep and you constantly hear about all those Vista uipdates and security holes like with leopard... ( that's sarcasm cause no you dont! )
- deadbaby, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1Are you new to computers? All new software has bugs.
- inactive, on 11/19/2007, -0/+1They actually have updates immediately. Apples OS was so screwed up on its base, with so many blue screen on installs, they needed a complete service pack to redo the OS.
It wasn't like Vista with bugs, leopard was a major *****!
The security hole patch to fix the firewall settings is still an after hotfix update NOT included in the service pack. - fugazied, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1Yep I have seen the disk permission issue too. Its why I will NOT use time machine until they support wireless backups, because I am pretty sure that, TM attempting to backup to a drive that moved from FW800 cable to wireless is causing it.
- FKnight, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1Not only does everyone bitch about it .. they turn updates OFF.
- fugazied, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1There are enough bits in Leopard that going back to tiger would be a bit harsh imo. For example I used a mac without places the other day.... When its gone you notice it BIG TIME.
