Leo Laporte: ‘Beatles’ Widescreen iPod to be unveiled during Superbowl
applegazette.com — "Merlin Mann suggested that their may be a new Beatles edition iPod similar to the U2 iPod …but with a widescreen and touch features like the iPhone. Leo Laporte 'predicted' this same idea again on the latest edition of Geekbrief TV."

- victorcgalanis, on 10/12/2007, -64/+15Darn it! They are updating/upgrading the Ipod too fast. Do they really expect us to buy a new one every year!?
- drum_bum, on 10/12/2007, -2/+184"Do they really expect us to buy a new one every year!?"
Yes, they do. - ghm101, on 10/12/2007, -61/+17And chain you (and your wallet in place) with iTunes DRM handcuffs
no body called them stupid - CraigJ, on 10/12/2007, -5/+64You mean you don't?
@ghm101 - I'm on my 3rd iPod and have never purchased anythihng from the iTunes music store... - zirtbow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Darn.. I was just about to buy an ipod but didn't want to wait MONTHS for them to release an updated ipod and I don't like the current ones. I was looking at an Archos just today but with this new info I guess I now have to hold out even longer to see if this new ipod would be a better deal.
- doom.md, on 10/12/2007, -0/+42@ghm101
here is a crazy idea if you dont like apples DRM go buy the album off amazon or in a shop, if you really want to stick it to teh "man" you could even go to one of them crazy independent record stores and rip the damn songs yourself.
as ***** crazy as it sounds it works - kaje, on 10/12/2007, -1/+51In other news, an Apple employee who was given fake information by management about a Beatles' widescreen iPod being released during the Superbowl gets fired.
- pabloD, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3@doom
Doc, you're absolutely right. However, some people don't like the idea of buying CDs either, because most of the money from CD sales goes to the record company, as opposed to the musician. I haven't bought a physical CD in years, unless it's an independent musician and I know that they get the money from their CD sales. Otherwise, if it's a band I want to support, I do my best to catch them live, and happily pay for (reasonably priced) tickets. - mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7They won't do it. If they do, it would be stupid. It would rival the iPhone.. And they don't need any rivals to it.
- itsme92, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15"Do they really expect us to buy one every year?"
What in the world is wrong with them releasing a new iPod every year? Doesn't mean you have to buy it. Your iPod will still be the same iPod it always was. I'm on my first iPod, a 4th gen 20 gig I bought in October '04. And, you know what, I like it when the new iPods come out. It means that I'll have something awesome to upgrade to once my current iPod breaks. You don't hear me whining when new iPods are coming out. If Apple didn't introduce new iPods, then we'd still be on the 5 gig 1st gen iPod. You can't argue with progress. Your 5th gen (I assume) will still be the same iPod as it was when you bought it. So what are you complaining about? - Chongo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Its called Planned Obsolescence... they teach us about this stuff in school.
Strangely it is both the worst and best aspect about electronics these days. - monkeybutler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Good grief! This is nothing more than an uneducated guess and it becomes frontpage news? I know I'll get dugg down for pointing this out but Apple frenzy is killing Digg. Just because someone mentions Apple doesnt mean its a story worth digging.
- Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Put the Beatles movies on it, and there will be hardly any storage left.
Nice try, Leo, but no. - reichg, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2hmmm i remember saying this almost a week ago http://www.digg.com/apple/Apple_to_air_special_Super_Bowl_ad_on_Feb_4
Where is my digg story? - macosx86, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2Leo Laporte is a dick.
- tadunne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm still on my ipod mini and probably will be until it dies, but I so WANT a new one :'(
but my kids have to eat!
- drum_bum, on 10/12/2007, -2/+184"Do they really expect us to buy a new one every year!?"
- skipere, on 10/12/2007, -1/+82If they have all the function like the Iphone with out phone feature. I'll buy it .
- dpcdomino, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Me too but it almost puts a dagger into the iPhone. Why release the smaller brother first?
- naiku, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8i think a lot of people will buy it instead of a iPhone. It would be crazy if it did get announced, but this is not going to happen.
- jsimonson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Me too. I was drooling over the Iphone's features, but I don't want the actual phone features. It'd be sweet to have a 40 gig widescreen touch screen video Ipod with wifi internet access and such.
- Nukem945, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I know this is what everyone wants/expects, but why would Apple do this to their own newborn baby (ie: iPhone). The iPhone is not even here yet and already ppl are waiting for a stripped down version for mp3 playback only. Don't get me wrong... I want this device too! But I seriously think this will hurt the iPhone and Apple's chances of putting their foot in the cell phone market door. November 2007 is when this device should appear.
- flashboy131, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4yeah I wouldn't buy the iPhone if a widescreen iPod,.. with a bigger HD was released. Why break a contract for Cingular?
- broomett, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5But flashboy...people are ALREADY sayingthat ("why break a contract...") even WITHOUT the widescreen iPod alternatve' The fact of the matter is, there is NOT this huge desire to get an iPhone, and Apple knows it.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"i think a lot of people will buy it instead of a iPhone."
Why? I am not buying an iPhone just to get an almost widescreen iPod with only 8GB memory tops. The iPhone is for people that want a phone. The iPod is for people that want a do-it-all media player. - YoctoYotta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I would totally rubberband my 120GB touchscreen iPod back to back with my matching iPhone. Kinda would block the camera(s), but I don't care. I'm interested to see if Apple goes smaller, maybe eliminating the black edge areas where the Home button and light/proximity sensors are.
- pabloD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2rubberband? ouch.
The widescreen iPod would probably come in much larger capacities, and with none of the internet functionality, either. In order for it to replace the current iPod line, it would have to at least closely match the capacity of the current line. - WiZZLa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14@ DaffyDuck : "The iPod is for people that want a do-it-all media player."
Yes, do-it-all like playing xvid/divx, mkv, ogg, flac, wma, midi, etc.
- amailian, on 10/12/2007, -14/+7I'd get it if they had all the features of the iPhone but without the iPhone part (wifi, widgets, and whatnot). Could possible be thinner than the iPhone as well, since it won't have all the extra phone stuff.
- InfinitySnatch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Not likely. It would have to have a hard drive to be a real video iPod, so chances are it will be only slightly thinner than the current iPod video. That is if this prediction in anywhere near accurate.
- CraigJ, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Depends on if it has a hard drive or not...
- amailian, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Just curious-why did i get dugg down? not really complaining about it, just don't know why.
- amailian, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2@InfinitySnatch
yeah, i had forgotten that the iPhone was using a flash hard drive-you're right, it wouldn't be thinner
- pkulak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Personally, I'm waiting for this. I'm not sure I need a new phone, but my 3G iPod is getting a bit long in the tooth.
- cyclopsface, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I still love my 3G - it's the perfect simple player. And with the new battery I just put in I couldn't be happier with it.
- quacker912, on 10/12/2007, -10/+0I know one thing, the Colts will be winning when the ad (if it is true) is being played.
- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -15/+5Here goes Apple again with their "innovation." Wake me up when Apple chicks are as hot as Korean chicks
http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/23/lgs-fm37-touch-screen-mp3-player-and-others-outted-in-korea/- Scottish, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8This is not an Apple fanboy comment -- in fact, this comment isn't related to apple in any way -- I just wanted to say that thing looks like garbage. 4:3? Come on...
- Cleanlyness, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6that looks alot like the clix
Scottish, 4:3 who the hell cares now a days? 16:9 is not a 'truer' ratio than 4:3. The only ratio that should be standard is the Golden Rectangle Ratio which is just between those two. - edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3All ipods so far have also been 4:3.
- Scottish, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Cleanlyness: Wow, you're clueless, aren't you? 16:9 is the aspect ratio of FILM. You know, the stuff on which movies and television shows are recorded?
edzieba: I know this, which is why I emphasized that my comment was unrelated to Apple. My point was that if he was going to call a potential widescreen/touchscreen iPod a copycat, he should at least ensure his device of choice has one of those features. - BarriedaleNick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Scottish - sorry to be a nerd but you are wrong. 16/9 (1.78/1)is a compromise for TV. That is not what you get at the cinema (1.85/1)
- Scottish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hmm, ok, I admit my mistake. However, 16:9 is the standard aspect ratio for HDTV, and his nonsense about the Golden Ratio is still just that -- nonsense.
- Cleanlyness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Scottish you are teh loser for teh win. wow a nerd that know nothing? astonishment! suck the industries ***** in believing 16:9 "pwns" 4:3. ***** gnerd and loser you are
lawl iBruiedU - Scottish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's simple, Cleanlyness:
The vast majority of content right now is produced in a widescreen format. This being the case, why would I want any device right now that only manages 4:3, squeezing a 16:9 or 1:85:1 picture into oblivion? It has nothing to do with 16:9 "pwning" 4:3 or any other ratio, it's a matter of screen economy and getting the best picture for most content sources.
- psygnisfive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26As Merlin himself said, he pulled this right out of his ass. It'd be cool if Merlin was right, but this isn't rumor, it's pure speculation.
- Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Exactly. I saw the video clip where this was mentioned on GeekBrief.TV. It's pure conjecture, guesswork and hope. Not a shred of fact involved.
I hope it comes to be, but I'd put the odds at 1,000,000 to 1. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"I hope it comes to be, but I'd put the odds at 1,000,000 to 1."

- charholly9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Maybe everyone should listen to the lateest Macbreak podcast in the section podcasts on digg. If you do you will hear that Merlin totally pulled that from his ass and Leo loved it, they all laughed and Merlin couldn't believe it, It was a joke!! at least Merlin thought so
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was listening to the podcast on my way to work this morning and I didn't really take it seriously either. Especially after he said he just pulled it from his butt.
- Bosox958, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10You could always just buy a Zune. We all know how much Leo Laporte loves those.
- ImTheDarkcyde, on 10/12/2007, -16/+5i still don't know what you zune bashers are on about
it's an mp3 player, and it plays MP3's. "drm drm drm" some cry, but you can put any mp3 you want on it, and it will still magically play
what next, people complaining that TVs don't pick radio up well enough?
- ImTheDarkcyde, on 10/12/2007, -16/+5i still don't know what you zune bashers are on about
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2If this were so, it would have been announced at Macworld. There may be a Beatles iPod, but it will probably be the same model iPod they're selling now.
- bwjacket, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14I would definitely pay $450 for a wide/touchscreen 30 gig iPod. Throw in the Beatles... I'll take 8, for every day of the week.
- buckeye45, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1i will buy it.
- roxics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'd pay that price for and 80gig but not a 30. Preferably only $400.
- ct2000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8if you listen to the podcast with Merlin and Leo - this just comes's out of Merlin's backside and has no back-up support that its true - he just made it up on the spot and is based on nothing !
- roxics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is true and I don't think anyone is really taking it seriously. It's just everyones best hope.
I think now that we've all seen the iPhone and know that Apple is working with this kind of technology (widescreen/touchscreen) there is little doubt it's going to hit the iPod. It's just a matter of when.
Hopefully sooner rather then later as I'm planning to purchase a new ipod by the end of May
- roxics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is true and I don't think anyone is really taking it seriously. It's just everyones best hope.
- Essefgy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Lame, lame, lame. Leo's prediction is based on nothing but a hunch.
- scairborn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3but, Please, please, please, be right this time.
- goodoldharris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You don't have to be a big Beatles fun to acknowledge that when Beatles music comes to iTunes it will be a huge deal.
Now, if you're the Beatles, and you finally decide to take your music online, don't you want to do it in the biggest way possible? Yes, you do. Don't you want at least what U2 got? Yes, you do.
And if you're Apple, and your CEO really loves the Beatles and really wants them on iTunes, won't you give the Beatles, who are arguably the biggest band in history, some very special treatment? Yes, you will. Will you give them at least what U2 got? Yes, you will.
Now whether it has a touch screen or not, and whether it happens at the SuperBowl or not, nobody knows, but I think it's a SURE THING that when the Beatles come to iTunes, Apple will introduce a Beatles iPod. And this is all just my speculation BTW, not Leo Leporte's or Merlin Mann's. - benjaminrayburn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Truly lame. Just look at Leo's track record. By his prognostications the intel switch would be the worst mistake Apple ever made.
- TheManiacKY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It will be for the iPhone. Even though you can't get it till June 1st. This will be another way for the people not watching all the tech shows to find out about the phone. Just like all the movie trailers you seen during the super bowl. 99% are for the summer. I don't think Apple is going to release a new iPod to compete with this Cell phone until way after the phones release. It will come out with a new ipod in Aug or Sept like they have for the past two years! Sorry Leo, but I can't agree with you on this one.
- broomett, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0You consider August to be "way after" June?
- cuddleparty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8not sure why people rip on itunes drm so much. out of all the drm i've ever encountered, it's probably one of the easiest to circumvent.
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That's precisely why the iTunes music store is so popular.
- iOsiris, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Widescreen?
Flip the iPod to the side lol. - RavenG4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Funny, I'm listening to MacBreak right now and figured I would search digg for someone who made this topic. If Merlin Mann's insane butt dream comes true, I would buy one, no doubt. I just hope it won't be red, ew.
- dl27, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Just one person's opinion here, but I think the major stumbling block preventing the widescreen iPod is cost. Considering that cell provider usually rebate cell phones ~ $200, Cingular may be rebating $300-400 to have an exclusive with the iPhone. This would place the iPhone in the $700-900 range. Assuming that a cell receiver for a hard disk swap would cancel out, how could Apple justify a $700-900 media player? I think that is the reason they went for the iPhone. They got cingular to defray some costs and it still is crazy expensive.
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2People will buy it. Never doubt the wallets of Ipod fanatics
- amailian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i may have my information wrong, but didn't someone break down what it costs to build an iPhone? i believe it was somewhere around 260 dollars. If it costs about that much for a widescreen ipod (i predict it would cost less), then they could really sell it for about 450 and still make a good prophet off of it.
- broomett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A breakdown of part costs is NOT a breakdown of what it costs Apple to sell one.
And sure...people would buy it. Some would. (Although most iPod owners surveyed say they do not care about video, let alone widescreen, so not many) But what WON'T happen is people buying both that and the iPhone.
- mobbo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Correct me if I'm wrong but the last time I searched... I could barely find any (not even a handful) of actual Beatles songs on iTunes. Just tribute bands.
- amailian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think that's why it's such a big deal-the beatls aren't on iTunes and Apple has been trying to get them on there.
- meamog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Beatles aren't on any (legal) online music store. That's why this would be a big deal, the Beatles are among the last artists who wish to stay offline.
- Merrick178, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0I'm sure hackers will find a way to turn the widescreen ipod into a 40 gb iPhone if it were released. Those hackers can do some crazy *****. Though I doubt it will be released... Anytime soon atleast... I would get it though, movies would be a hell of a lot better to watch and my friends could no longer say "Oooh ya your iPod can play videos but who wants to watch a movie on a tiny ass screen." and now I could say "BAM" this would be awesome tho, I wonder if it would have the coverflo in it.
- jakebarnes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They would have to "hack" themselves some new hardware into the phone.
- Skyhoper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Oh God, I want one!
- Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The iPhone, or a woman?
- Robotsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This all really depends on the storage capacity they choose, but I feel they are in danger of cannibalizing the iphone with this move..

- ProAm500, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1For the comments on price...I can def. see Apple lowering their margins close to cost for the potential of selling more movies in the itunes store....
- MysticMaven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3God I hope so so everyone can stop bitching about there not being a widescreen ipod.
- shad0w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And cannibalize iphone sales before it's even released? I don't think so.
- Loucipher, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Here's a link to possible leaked pictures. http://www.flickr.com/photos/2122950/345715833/in/photostream/
- pabloD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I dunno. I think with the iPhone's Multitouch interface, the scrollwheel interface is dead. It makes no sense not to roll the interface into the widescreen, touchscreen iPod long with the form factor.
The physical form factor looks pretty dead-on, though.

Doesn't matter.
But it does illustrate how weak the market is for Apple phone when most Apple fans are looking more forward to this then the "iPhone".

- jackcall, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1A Beatles iPod is never going to happen, Beatles hate apple too much, you see Beatles' record company is named apple as well. When Apple(corp) first came to the UK, they were sued by apple records for trademark infringement. The judge ruled that people wouldn't get confused about Apple(corp) and Apple Records as long as they stayed in separate businesses. So when apple decided to launch iTunes music store, apple records sued again. I can't recall ever hearing of a verdict, but I'm pretty sure that Apple records are pretty p*ssed off.
I would be less surprised to find a Beatles flavored Zune, and that is never going to happen either.- robdazomba, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3> I can't recall ever hearing of a verdict
And yet, you've formed such solid opinions about the ramifications. Amazing! Does it hurt to pull so much out of your ass at once?
The verdict was in favor of Apple Computer (rightly, as the agreement between the two companies gave Apple Computer the rights to do what they did.) It was reported that Apple Records and Apple Computer came to an amicable agreement although the details were not released to the public, so your assertions that "Apple records are pretty p*ssed off" and "Beatles hate apple [sic] too much" are way off base.
- robdazomba, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3> I can't recall ever hearing of a verdict
- pabloD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is all academic, folks. Steve Jobs is going to pull a Disney and buy Apple Corps. That's what they're gonna announce on 20 Feb, along with the Beatles catalogue, exclusively on iTunes. This was in my butt, and now it's a prediction and it's out there.

With the exception of the small fringe of avi, divx, ogg, wma, wmv, flac and most of the rest of the common media formats, of course, but if you ask me, players that go around pandering to the needs of the consumer without as nice a case are just cynical "substance over style". - alternapop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they don't expect you to buy a new one every year but they sure encourage it. it's no different than any other industry except for maybe housing. automobile manufacturers add new features and redesign cars to get you to buy a new car, not to keep their employees busy.
- counterplex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is exactly what I was hoping but Apple launched the iPhone instead. Finally I have a compelling reason to get an iPod :)
- michaelchyles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It seems like evryone is overlooking the fact that iPod's are usually revised and upgraded around october..so it revs consumer interest and creates a great buying season for the iPod. i strongly beleive that the anticipated widescreen iPod will be released sometime around then at the end of this year. Plus..releasing an widescreen iPod would cannibalise the growing interest in the iPohone. It's pure marketing strategy. Apple wont let us down..
- theokandroid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No they aren't they're usually released around summer or spring. That means they build a lot of hype. They usually last a year and a half.
- nfxmedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1C'mon, this is a prediction. The hype is overrated.
- Vizin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The widescreen feature of the iPhone will most likely be ported to the iPod, maybe not the nano. Having that technology, which is ideal for movies, limited to a 4/8 gig device would be such a waste.
It wouldn't be the first time Apple would do something like this. The iPod was on it's third gen when the mini came out, and they ported the mini's button configuration to the 4th gen iPod. I imagine the 6th gen iPod will have the widescreen touch interface. They may put zune-like wifi capability in as well, but I'd be surprised to see a web browser in the normal iPod, as it would cut into the iPhone's sales too much.
During the superbowl though? I don't know, Apple is famous after all for their 1984 Mac superbowl commercial, but times have changed, and people expect (demand) Steve to introduce products on a stage. Plus, this seems like an odd time to introduce such a product, as most significant iPod releases have been made during the fall, for the update to spread to public knowledge for the Holiday season. - leffunov, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Who the hell cares about a Beatles iPod? What is this 1968?
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Remember iPod users buy anything that says 'iPOD' on it, even if it is priced %50 above the competition.
Example:
iPod Cassette Adapter - $20.00 (cassette adapter with 1/8" male plug)
Memorex Cassette Adapter - $9.99 (cassette adapter with 1/8" male plug) - nfxmedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Obviously not you. That doesn't mean everyone else won't appreciate it. Narcissism is thick today.

- mhanley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't really care if they announce a Beatles iPod-- but I would order one of the new widescreen touchscreen iPods tomorrow if they announced it.
- kim^lwx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh this is excellent; more apple rumors to keep the fan-boys alive. It's about time for the Digg crew to add an "Apple Rumors" link in line with the News, Videos, Podcasts links at the top of Digg.
- tlow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Although it may be possible that the beatles will be coming to iTunes and that a widescreen iPod will be announced, it is my contention that they won't use this timespace for the full screen video iPod. Why would they spend millions on advertising for a product that is going to sell itself?
I believe that we will see the 12" MBP or ultra form factor computer (call it what you want). - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2** Bow-Chika-Bow-Wow pr0n music Playing **
