- rautox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wait, you mean people want something other than the relentless stream of monotonous, formulaic schlock they've been fed? Shocking
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like Carlos Mencia, and Micheal Ian Black, Jack Black, etcetera.
I'm not sure of the guys name... Blonde hair, made the joke about dating a panda... Gaffigan maybe? - TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well no *****. Did they think people who watch crap like Laguna Beach would ever download it? Their too interested in conciously maintaining their breathing, as they have no automatic neural functions. And so all their mental activity goes into keeping their brains alive and functioning. The only other mental functions they can muster up are the primal urges to eat. And a show like Laguna Beach not only requires no mental functions in it's viewers, but actually requires some sort of severe mental damage be present, so of course it's a hit in the US. But would those brain dead walking corpses ever dream of downloading it on iTunes? No.
- TheWalkingDude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dane Cook rocks; you can listen to some of his stuff on his website.
http://www.danecook.com/ - sullivaduggit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0MITCH RULES!!!!! R.I.P. Oh the irony. Takes an untimely death to become popular.
- justinvt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah - Both are great comedians. Who here is in the 18-24 male demographic? It's about time someone catered to us. Seems like everything on TV these days is for the ladies.
- bob645, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh the irony
dugg - Billdozer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah Eskadus, its Jim Gaffigan.
- briansalo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Comedian stand-up stuff was one of the things I was waiting for when they announced the deals with the TV networks, especially even just in audio podcast form.
- vaporboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really believe this is why the itunes store model for vids and such is the way of distributing media to the masses that really works. Lets face it, for many years the public has wanted more specific media content for their interests and the way video content is started to be disseminated on the net allows people to purchase and watch the shows they are really interested in. The exciting part for the industry and many of these more independent artists is that they will get so much more exposure to mass markets instead of having their acts aired on some channel on some late night market.
- IKbot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been saying this for years. There should be an all-stand-up radio station. It certainly would be funnier than the inane off-the-cuff comments of the current breed of radio hosts.
Comedians should sell there material as podcasts, giving away plenty free.
If you haven't seen Louis C.K., my guess is that you're about to spend on hour on his site, where he has a ton of free videos. He's one of the funniest guys alive today.
http://www.louisck.com/ - thedudeabides, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dane Cook steals jokes from comedians who are much more talented than he is. It is a shame his special is higher than a complete original like Hedberg.
R.I.P. - moron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You want something silly and funny, do a search for "Ask a Ninja".
- Trjn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is anyone really shocked that ANYTHING is managing to outperform Spongebob Squarepants?
Being a well known franchise doesn't stop it being crap, this just allows for the good stuff that normally gets killed by crappy timeslots and the like to be available to those who realise that it is actually some of the best on the network. - Fleagle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dane Cook and Mitch Hedberg (R.I.P.) are hilarious, so I'm not shocked.
- ezweave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's not true that those specials have not been "exposed" to the after market before. If you buy their cds, they come with a dvd containing their Comedy Central specials.
- russellpeters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0RUSSELL PETERS is my favorite comedian !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- diggerphelps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pringles was supposed to be a tennis ball company.
But this truck showed up with a bunch of potatoes, so they said, "***** it, we'll make potato chips instead."
$2.00 for 20 minutes of Mitch Hedberg is just damn good value, IMO.
RIP Mitch. - LucasOman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't they know that a laugh track is the canned laughter added to a sitcom with no live audience?
- rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not really surprising due to the demographics and the type of show.
"Lost" is a hit, but it's not being watched by nerdy guys as much as Comedy Central's standup shows. And nerdy guys are using iTunes more than anyone else.
Also, I think an episode of Comedy Central Presents has a lot more replay, especially in little spurts (like when riding the metro), than any series episode.
Also, CC did show about a billion episodes of Comedy Central Presents in Janurary. Not that I'm complaining :) I almost bought a bunch of those vids on iTunes, but I already have most of the good ones in audio already. - test5477, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I've been saying this for years. There is, there are several all comedy channels on Sirius. Mainly stand up with a sketch thrown in every now and then. Raw Dog Comedy channel, very good. Even has a daily show hosted by Jim Brewer. - Bigfat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This isn't surprising at all. How often do (fairly outdated, but still great) stand up specials appear on BitTorrent? This to me is where the Video Store will shine, when they can actually get content to people who want GOOD content they can't find elsewhere.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It would seem MTV has a short damn memory. Didn't they learn exactly this lesson back in the early 90s with the explosion of underground bands into the mainstream? Why would the same thing not apply to comedy?
Now, if only iTunes would get a decent selection of Bill Hicks on there, we'd be set. - DeezKnots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd rather watch Knight Rider and A-Team. Kidding, the new comedy is awesome.e.
(But, I have actually downloaded A-Team & Knight Rider). - kcappraiser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Same with XM, it is good, good stuff.
- bjkrautk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just think it's funny that people continue to pay for the comedy albums on iTunes that they could get for much cheaper on emusic (100 song trial = Comedy Central Records....Free for the first month).
I'm glad that people are picking up the stand-up routines from comedy central. Of course, I remember when the network had 2-3 stand-up clip shows on the air every day ("Stand-up Stand-up" anyone?).
Mitch Hedberg's passing was the least funny April Fools Day news I've ever heard. I'm one of the people who bought the first CD from his website....and it such a downer to hear his old bits (or his appearences on "Home Movies" on AS) and knowing that he's gone. His delivery and timing were impeccable.
I could keep talking comics, but you guys passed over the best part of the article:
"Library programming also has proved to be a stronger draw than recent fare on MTV, which has seen little sampling for such series as 'Laguna' and 'Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Gauntlet 2.'" My faith in human-kind is slowly being redeemed. (Now if only they hadn't followed that up by saying that 'Jackass' has a strong audience.) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0how soon before someone starts whining about crappy compression, iTMS sux or that they can get it free online?
- mgorbsky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I've been saying this for years. There should be an all-stand-up radio station. It certainly would be funnier than the inane off-the-cuff comments of the current breed of radio hosts."
It's called Sirius... There's 2 channels, actually (1 is family friendly, the other, not so much ;-) ) - uacheesehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How could they be so surprised? It definitely makes sense - two bucks for a 20-25 minute stand up performance is a great deal!
I've already got Dane Cook and Mitch Hedberg.. Bring on Stephen Lynch! - DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Makes sense. Comedy bits translate better in small clips on a small screen than an hour long drama. Just check out any viral video site.
- michaelburns, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I love Dane Cook!
