Latest iPhone 2.0 Firmware Has 3G On/Off Option
macrumors.com — Earlier today we posted a screenshot on our iPhone section that claimed to depict an new On/Off option to enable 3G speeds. This new preference was found in the latest iPhone 2.0 Beta 5 distributed to developers. Be default, the preference is hidden, but one developer claims to have activated i...

- Exekutor, on 05/11/2008, -0/+4Is it June yet?
- BrendanSheehan, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2Not yet.
- skemez1, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1sigh... :(
- BrendanSheehan, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2Not yet.
- Exekutor, on 05/11/2008, -0/+4Is it June yet?
- bryantee, on 05/11/2008, -15/+71Awe. For a moment I thought this meant that current iPhones might get 3G capabilities. Naive me.
- OneManArmy, on 05/11/2008, -8/+95Naive is an understatment.
- BlueStarr, on 05/11/2008, -3/+8I'm sure you're use to hearing the same thing from time to time.
One man army? Handel says it all. You're a follower not an individual. - TheBigSquid, on 05/11/2008, -5/+5Wow, can you be a little bit ruder?
- BlueStarr, on 05/11/2008, -3/+8I'm sure you're use to hearing the same thing from time to time.
- BrendanSheehan, on 05/11/2008, -31/+10The correct description is ignorant actually. I don't mean to be offensive, but that comment makes you ignorant of the fact that you aren't aware that a 3G radio is piece of hardware the current iPhone simple lacks. Though if I has to guess I'd say your comment is simply sarcasm. You devil you.
- Tarsmus, on 05/11/2008, -8/+18I don't mean to be offensive, but you're a dick... Oh wait, I think I meant it.
Digg.com: If someone doesn't know everything you know, Flame 'em!- BrendanSheehan, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1Actually it was a joke, I didn't mean to be offensive, just descriptive. I actually just made sense. Admittedly it wasn't funny however. I'll crawl back into my little hole now :(
- BlueStarr, on 05/11/2008, -4/+7Ignorant would be over kill and an improper labeling in this case. This person simply lacks information and understandings of certain technologies. That's not a crime. You on the other hand have more pressing issues that you should be addressing instead of trying to belittle someone over something so insignificant.
- ricodued, on 05/11/2008, -1/+6"Ignorant: unaware because of a lack of relevant information or knowledge"
That would make him ignorant. Not in a pejorative sense, but ignorant none-the-less. Indeed, ignorant is a better term here than naive. - bryantee, on 05/11/2008, -1/+1Actually understanding from before I read this article was that 3G capability was a hardware issue, but when I saw this I suspended that understanding for a moment of wishful thinking.
- ricodued, on 05/11/2008, -1/+6"Ignorant: unaware because of a lack of relevant information or knowledge"

- sarixe, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1aw, i guess you never saw george of the jungle!
- redwallhp, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3No, Apple can use their magic to upgrade your hardware along with the firmware. Come June you'll get a firmware upgrade, along with a new 3G radio and upgraded battery. Steve Jobs is our king.
- adammharvey, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2you spelled navy wrong. *sarcasm*
- OneManArmy, on 05/11/2008, -8/+95Naive is an understatment.
- wilhoitm, on 05/11/2008, -22/+6How long until the 4G iPhone comes out! Just Kidding! ;-)
- Eminemdrdre00, on 05/11/2008, -13/+24G will be in the jPhone!
- virtualball, on 05/11/2008, -1/+55THis is good for three reasons. 1. There will be a 3G iPhone. 2. iPhone 2.0 will most likely use the same screen/resolution as 1.0 3. The second iPhone will use the exact same software. Sure, all of those were a given, but it's good to have confirmation :)
- cdigioia, on 05/11/2008, -11/+9Why are 2 & 3 good things?
- stoph009, on 05/11/2008, -0/+17He already bought one
- virtualball, on 05/11/2008, -2/+13Developers won't have to redo their code to fit both generations and existing apps should just work on the new OS with minor code changes.
- cdigioia, on 05/11/2008, -11/+9Why are 2 & 3 good things?
- TomPlansMedia, on 05/11/2008, -2/+37im guessing any hardware updates will be pretty minimal, we wont see anything too mind-blowing. 3G, GPS, 3rd party apps, maybe a better camera.
- z3rr0, on 05/11/2008, -2/+24LOL. Yeah, nothing major at all?!?!?!
- pilot101, on 05/11/2008, -0/+23I mean 3g, gps and 3rd party support was the only thing holding iphone back, if they have all that it's pretty goddamn perfect phone.
- ilgaz, on 05/11/2008, -14/+4Buy Nokia N95 or any high end Symbian phone if you need such features.
- jo21, on 05/11/2008, -5/+2yes... that + TV-out VGA 30fps video recording
- mp93, on 05/11/2008, -1/+20Why don't you realize that the iPhone is about the UI?
- championchap, on 05/11/2008, -1/+5Because he's never used one.
It all becomes apparent after having used one.- ilgaz, on 05/11/2008, -1/+2I have used it. UI is genius but locked, I can't stand to locked things. Basic as that.
- Blandyman, on 05/11/2008, -0/+5I love the N95, but I agree that the iPhone is indeed about the UI. The features are secondary. The N95 has its market, as does iPhone
- championchap, on 05/11/2008, -1/+5Because he's never used one.
- Mohanned, on 05/11/2008, -0/+6All that an video chat. I'd say the iphone is right where I want it to be...
- mrhahn, on 05/11/2008, -0/+6Does anyone really use video chat? Most (newish) phones here in England are 3G-enabled and have cameras on the front, but I don't know anyone that's ever used the video chat feature (except maybe when they first get the phone, just to try it out).
- Mycael, 7 hr 1 min ago, -0/+1I agree, never seen anyone use it. no need for it, unless it's like
"OMG a guy just fell over and it really funny *video chat*"
- Mycael, 7 hr 1 min ago, -0/+1I agree, never seen anyone use it. no need for it, unless it's like

- Magnolit, on 05/11/2008, -0/+11removable battery!!!
- antslater, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3Hang on, am I missing something?
if this firmware version is going to be used on the 3G iPhone AND the old iPhone - then it can't have GPS etc. Adding GPS hardware would require seperate firmware for each varient because it's a major change in funcionality.
No?- piwy, on 05/11/2008, -0/+5Nope. You can have the code for gps in there, but just not enabled on the non gps phone.
Same as they will have code to handle 3G on the phone that does not support it.- ThirdPrize, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1You can bet someone is going to hack it on an old phone to turn it on, just to see what happens.
- avihappy, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1There is a systemwide API for developers on the iPhone. One will be an API to get the current location. Apps just have to ask where the iPhone is, and the iPhone will tell it using whatever hardware is available. The iPhone can already give the location using the cellular network (fake GPS).
- piwy, on 05/11/2008, -0/+5Nope. You can have the code for gps in there, but just not enabled on the non gps phone.
- DavisCollins, on 05/11/2008, -2/+3I don't see them releasing to many features that are totally hardware dependent, considering they will be using the same software versions.
- championchap, on 05/11/2008, -1/+5Why not?
the software will just do a scan for hardware and enable features based on that. No big deal.
- championchap, on 05/11/2008, -1/+5Why not?
- Baffles, on 05/11/2008, -20/+5lol at&t 3g, what a joke.

- mark076h, on 05/11/2008, -2/+15what happens if you get a 3G iPhone but you dont have 3g coverage, will it use the edge network this article is the first mention of being able to fall back to edge?
- MellerTime, on 05/11/2008, -0/+24Yes, it would just fall back to EDGE.
- mark076h, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3sweet i am definitely getting one now, i was looking on the coverage map for 3g and i am right on the border so i am not sure if i will have coverage or not at my house
- mysql101, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2at your house, you'd use even faster wifi.

- deadbaby, on 05/11/2008, -2/+17Presumably so. That's how other phones work.
- lensovet, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3not true at all. there are a number of phones out there that have no EDGE support, including GSM-only and 3G/GSM phones. hard to believe, but true.
- ross., on 05/11/2008, -3/+42Always LOL's me when Americans have no idea about 3G. I guess its not your fault, the US carriers have screwed you out of years of 3G.
- shmatt, on 05/11/2008, -2/+3Yes, yes they have
- tnoy, on 05/11/2008, -1/+3Yes, just like every 3G phone that has ever been made.
- johnpaul191, on 05/11/2008, -4/+1This sucks, I won't buy a phone with EDGE. That may be enough to keep me on Verizon for a while. That whole EDGE network is *****. I'm amazed it's allowed to interfere with audio devices the way it does. I'm sick of hearing that EDGE noise on radio, TV shows and podcasts. I am amazed the FCC ever allowed it to exist as is.
*if* this is true, that means that AT&T can not manage to build a 3G network, and Apple was right last year when they said that nobody has made a 3G chip that doesn't destroy battery life. Two things Steve Jobs said at the iPhone launch, and a year ago people said was suspicious. I guess he was telling the truth.
- MellerTime, on 05/11/2008, -0/+24Yes, it would just fall back to EDGE.
- shyboy2008, on 05/11/2008, -28/+4i cant wait for the new 3G phone so I can use my old one as a dildo.................a dildo...................a dildo................a dildo...............a dildo..............a dildo..............a dildo
- BrendanSheehan, on 05/11/2008, -0/+15Why don't you just buy a regular dildo, I'm sure they're cheaper.

- sb07, on 05/11/2008, -10/+10this is basically hard evidence that 3g will definitely be in the next-gen iphone. now all we need is some hard evidence that there will be a webcam on the front.
- dagamer34, on 05/11/2008, -7/+3Wtf, who would use a webcam?
- mark076h, on 05/11/2008, -2/+1video chat would be badass
- ross., on 05/11/2008, -0/+11The vast majority of 3G phones have a 'webcam' on the front, FYI.
Also, if Steve Jobs saying "we're releasing a 3G iPhone next year" (which is this year) isn't evidence enough, I don't see how this make it any clearer.- Stephiems, on 05/11/2008, -0/+4No, it might not be evidence enough, but isn't it evidence enough when carriers around the world who ONLY have a 3G network are being announced as having a contract with Apple for the iPhone? The 3G iPhone is coming out, and very soon. Vodaphone here in Australia are already starting to try to sell to people based on it. They have officially announced it on their website, and they only have a 3G network.
- ross., on 05/11/2008, -0/+2I'm Australian and can tell you Vodafone have much more than a 3G network, in fact their 3G network is quite small and barely extends outside of capital cities and major centres (although they are turning this around at a steady pace).
But fact is we're getting the iPhone, about effing time!!! Can't wait to see the costs/plans however!

- blackjack75, on 05/11/2008, -0/+5A camera on the front is essential for video calls. Think about some of Nokia's phone (can't remember the model) that have one camera on one side and the screen on the other, making video calls impossible.
You'll soon realize that if you want to be able to both take picture and do video calls you need:
a) a camera on the other side of the screen (to take pictures while watching the target)
b) another camera on the same side as the screen (to film your face while watching the other person).
- dagamer34, on 05/11/2008, -7/+3Wtf, who would use a webcam?
- josh68684, on 05/11/2008, -8/+3As long as I can watch surf the net watching porn and talking on the phone i will be the happiest digger
- Giga, on 05/11/2008, -0/+14Why would you want to watch some dude known as "surf the net" while they watch porn while talking on the phone? Are they some dyslexic cousin of Papa Smurf or something?
- CopyNinja, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3This made me laugh really really hard.

- Giga, on 05/11/2008, -0/+14Why would you want to watch some dude known as "surf the net" while they watch porn while talking on the phone? Are they some dyslexic cousin of Papa Smurf or something?
- deadnoob, on 05/11/2008, -1/+10I wonder if they are going mess with the design of the phone. Probably not.
- Appleologist, on 05/11/2008, -1/+8I do prefer the darker outer edge (and thinness) of the iPod Touch compared to the reflecting aluminum metal.
- Dylson, on 05/11/2008, -9/+1'Shopped.
- GreenAlien, on 05/11/2008, -1/+8So seeing as it'll use the same code base it's likely (though not guaranteed obviously) to display at the same resolution. So next question is whether the screen will be physically the same size. Some rumour sites suggest it'll be smaller. Hope that's not the case.
- jm1234567890, on 05/11/2008, -0/+12If the screen is smaller we will all have to evolve smaller fingertips.
- Kyan, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2Well, that is exactly how evolution works, isn't it?
- mark076h, on 05/11/2008, -0/+6they better not make the screen smaller, that would be stupid
- blackjack75, on 05/11/2008, -1/+3Well, the phone IS a bit bulky to carry in your pocket during the summer (much like any other smart phone). If they have an option for an iphone 'mini' I'd consider it.
- ArchangelZLT, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2If I have an option for fingers 'mini' I'd consider it, not before.
- Kinnkster, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3I doubt it will be smaller, especially with the high pixel density.
- jm1234567890, on 05/11/2008, -0/+12If the screen is smaller we will all have to evolve smaller fingertips.
- goodluck4287, on 05/11/2008, -16/+2You retards, you're all supposed to digg me up, I worked for Apple.
Now start clickin' bury you delusional robots.- Giga, on 05/11/2008, -1/+4Even if you did work for Apple, that should not be reason enough to digg you up. Even if working at Apple was reason enough, you no longer work there which means you were either fired (Apple fans would hate you for that) or you decided to leave (Apple fans would also hate you for thinking you were better than them).
- goodluck4287, on 05/11/2008, -7/+1You, are retarded. I left in good standings for my education.

- venuspcs, on 05/11/2008, -19/+8You know I am not one to typically knock Apple Fan-Boys, in fact this will be my first time.....and here is why!
I recently bought a Samsung GH-I617 (BlackJack II) from AT&T. It runs Windows Mobile 6.1, has 3G, Edge and GPRS built in. It has a fully functional Sirf III GPS built in that will track 10 different satellites simultaneously. It has a good 1.3 Megapixel Camera/Camcorder built in. It has Video Calling built in. It has a full Media Player (Windows Media Player) built in (which I quickly replaced), it was Application and GPS unlocked when I bought it new from AT&T. Since I bought it (less than 2 weeks ago) I have replaced the Media Player, Installed Garmin XT 2009 which is internet enabled so I get everything in Real Time including traffic, weather, nearest points of interest, etc. I have also replaced the WM6 default theme so it looks more like the iPod and works as smoothly as the iPod. I put a 4 GB microSD card in it to go along with the free space already on the phone. So to sum it up I have a far better phone, better media player, better internet device (it actually has a usable keyboard), better GPS, better camera and I have less than $300 in it.
EAT THAT APPLE FAN BOYS- ofenza, on 05/11/2008, -1/+9Noone gives a ***** about your brico-pimped samsung GH-whatever, dude.
- superkendall, on 05/11/2008, -1/+7The Apple Fan's best revenge is that you have to actually use the Samsung every day, and think you enjoy it!
Delightful. - fanclerks, on 05/11/2008, -1/+26You people still don't get it do you?? Yeah, there are better phones out there than the iPhone. But they are only better hardware wise. The reason that there are so many people that like the iPhone still regardless of it being less technically is because of the interface. Everything Apple does and is popular for is because of THE ***** INTERFACE! Get that through your ***** skulls already.
- diothar, on 05/11/2008, -1/+5Well said.
- johnsonjoeb, on 05/11/2008, -1/+2and people drive beamers because they handle well. yes some of this is about branding but most of the purchase motivation is about quality of product. i'm sure you understand this. you're running windows after all.
- fanclerks, on 05/11/2008, -0/+6Damnit, ran out of time to finish editting. I wanted to add this to my above comment:
I personally love how most of Apple's stuff is intuitive and easy to use and hate the interface that comes with the WinMo devices. Now you might not like the interface and prefer the WinMo platform, but that's your preference. That's the great thing about choice. If you don't like it, don't get it. As I stated before, there are better devices out there hardware wise. I don't care. What I care about is the experience, and that is something that all other developers are still struggling to catch up to Apple with.- shmatt, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2anybody know what motorola used to use -or still uses- in the RAZR? It was ***** maddening.
- santaliqueur, on 05/11/2008, -0/+6You are more of a "fanboy" than most of the Apple USERS you try to mock. Shut the ***** up please.
- Pinkertinkle, on 05/11/2008, -15/+12Why the hell would I want to turn OFF 3G?
- raleel, on 05/11/2008, -1/+11the picture says that it decreases battery life :)
- ilgaz, on 05/11/2008, -13/+3If you buy Steve Jobs claims that 3G consumes more power? (no such thing, it uses LESS)
- haylel, on 05/11/2008, -0/+7If you live in an area that isn't 100% covered (probably a lot of people), it switches back and forth constantly and makes your battery die VERY quickly. I learned this first hand.
- CaliCutin, on 05/11/2008, -1/+33G does not consume more power than GSM. It is because if you lose 3G coverage, the phone has to scan and sync to a preferred GSM network listed in your SIM and this procedure consumes a lot of power because the phone has to sync at full allowed phone power.
This is bad if you need to camp from 3G to GSM, not the other way around.- mrBitch, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2...which means that if you have 3G enabled in an area where your phone will be constantly dropping/picking up 3G coverage, then YES it will drain your phone charge...
- haylel, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1i didn't say anything about 3G killing the battery, i said switching kills it, read it again.

- mobilehavoc, on 05/11/2008, -10/+5This is bad news - looks like 3G is going to kill iPhone 3G's battery life and you can't even ***** buy a spare battery or an extended one. *****.
- jo21, on 05/11/2008, -1/+2its sad but true.
- fanboydcs, on 05/11/2008, -0/+9I hate this argument, Just buy the griffin battery that plugs into the dock connector if you travel, the iPhone has a full OS, if consumers were able to take the battery out imagine how corrupted the iPhone's OS would be, people would remove the battery while the iPhone was running. Also with the griffin battery you just plug it in which is much easier than any other phone. Yes it will ad bulk, but who cares you would be carrying around an extra battery anyways..
- aeiou, on 05/11/2008, -1/+1like how palm and WM devices get corrupted when you take out the battery?
Seriously, they have non-volitale flash memory- this is a non issue
- aeiou, on 05/11/2008, -1/+1like how palm and WM devices get corrupted when you take out the battery?
- BlueStarr, on 05/11/2008, -1/+11So buy a similar product like this one to help extend daily battery use.
http://www.mophie.com/collections/batteries
The All-New mophie ‘Juice Pack’ is designed to extend the time you can Rock, Talk, Surf and Send with your iPhone This is the first Apple certified ”Works With iPhone” attached battery in the world! The Juice Pack is a rechargeable lithium polymer battery in the form of a non-slip, soft grip case. It extends the time that you can...- fanboydcs, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3awesome, no crashing your OS on your phone and chancing corrupting your data when swapping a battery
- Kinnkster, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1Jucie pack.
- mrhahn, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3Or http://www.iphonebackupbattery.com/, even if it does look janky as *****.
- BlueStarr, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1Wow, what a horrible design. Look how much longer it makes iPhone/iPod or whatever else you connect it too. I'll take the Juice pack over that any day.
- hckynck20, on 05/11/2008, -0/+83G is fast but you better plan on bringing a charger with you i used to have a blackjack and i would barely get 5hrs of battery life with loading a few pages here and there, it drains the battery big time.
- blackjack75, on 05/11/2008, -0/+6Well i's not only 3G, it's the fact that you use a web browser. That takes some processing power too. My laptop doesn't last 5 hours either.
- CaliCutin, on 05/11/2008, -1/+0If you barely get 5hrs out of your 3G phone just by internet browsing, then your phone and/or battery might have a problem. I use my Nokia E61i for web browsing, Mail for Exchange, Gmail, Worldmate, Fring and bluetooth and I can get it to work for more than 2 days without charging.
- onClipEvent, on 05/11/2008, -0/+5i wish they add a Wi-Fi on/off option in the main interface, instead of me going into Settings, Wi-Fi,
- blackjack75, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1BossPrefs will probably add this soon enough. (for those who don't know it's a tool to quickly access settings, such as starting the SSH server, Wifi, Edge, with plugins for other services as well).

- cnicodemus, on 05/11/2008, -0/+10It is pretty ***** obvious that the 3G iPhone is coming within the next month.
- Shah, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3Does this mean 3G is turned off by default?
- BlueStarr, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2We'll see. Does it matter? I'm sure you'll be in those settings before doing anything else. At least that's what I do when I get a new gadget.
- doctordbx, on 05/11/2008, -6/+23G? Pffft... I have 4G.
- WestN, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1haha sure sure
- eVolutionVI, on 05/11/2008, -1/+13As long as the new iPhone actually utilise HSDPA or HSUPA on its 3G connection I'd be very happy. Digg me down but most american folks don't even know what all of that means. Sure hope old mr Jobs actually LOOK further than the US Market. 3G = 384kbps, HSDPA = 3.6mbps or even 7.2mbps on one of the networks in my country. I really want an iPhone, but I don't want a substandard thing. First iPhone didnt even make it to my country... :(
- DomZy, on 05/11/2008, -1/+3It will probably support HSDPA, most modern 3G phones do.
- eVolutionVI, on 05/11/2008, -0/+5You'd think that and honestly... I'd like to think that as well. But then you get a phone that is 'still coming' on Sony Ericsson's site, the G900, with its touch screen and all...with 3G only. It makes me so angry I want to just go and punch SE in the face for their stupidity! Trust me, they are not the only ones either....
- KaneElson, on 05/11/2008, -1/+3I agree, I run a tytn at the moment and it ***** me off with all the bugs and usability issues, but if the iPhone doesn't support HSDPA, I just can't upgrade.
- Mycael, 6 hr 59 min ago, -0/+1Yeah, UK has HSDPA. Not in touch with the non-US markets, I think more people would of got the phone, if it was free (as there are uaually) and had a 12 month contract.
- DomZy, on 05/11/2008, -1/+3It will probably support HSDPA, most modern 3G phones do.
- Trilogy, on 05/11/2008, -5/+1And how is this news? Every ***** 3G phone has that option as far as I know... Yes, iPhone isn't 3G yet, but we already got it. It's coming.
- kgarr, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3Well, we're waiting... Turn it on already!
- yabos, on 05/11/2008, -1/+8You *could* easily create that UI yourself in interface builder. Just saying...
- halohunter, on 05/11/2008, -0/+4Its confirmed to exist. You can check it yourself if you want.
- DaviDaviDaviD, on 05/11/2008, -0/+4I hope this is a world wide release too. I don't want to have to wait 9 months while they do the paper work for the UK.
- johnpaul191, on 05/11/2008, -3/+1The important point of this rumor is that your current iPhone is NOT 3G capable.... just that the current and new iPhones will use the same firmware. again... if this is for real.
The bummer is that the new phones will still have to rely on the crappy EDGE network. - risotto, on 05/11/2008, -1/+2Shopped! That's where the WiFi option should be, though WiFi is definitively going to stay!
- wonkavsn, on 05/11/2008, -0/+5802.11x, please
- gost3, on 05/11/2008, -4/+1if you turn 3g off you'll need the extended battery life to load the pages
- risotto, on 05/11/2008, -2/+2Digg this: 4G setting found in latest firmware: http://www.risottosblog.com/2008/05/11/indisputabl ...
- johnnyboy426, on 05/11/2008, -2/+0This is definitely a big step forward in technology.
- NAOC, on 05/11/2008, -2/+3I am a beta tester of the apple software using the latest build and this feature is not available. HOAX
- timusca, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Credentials, please?
- dodgejon, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Can you believe this device is trying to compete with Iphone?
http://digg.com/gadgets/PRADA_Cellphone_Answers_th ... - Nickdotnet, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Apple has pulled iphones off their site...they are currently "Unavailable" :) :) :)
- MIDIEVIL, on 05/12/2008, -0/+0Definitely would consider one now, so close! So very close!
