- SlantyEyes, on 10/10/2007, -17/+76Where did apple find a 1.3 megapixel Camera... The Antiques Road Show?
- meshman, on 10/10/2007, -23/+55Apple just keeps pouring out the miracles that defy laws of physics. 1.3 megapixels? There's no camera capable of that kind of blazing resolution. This is right out of Star Trek. This has to be Apple's most original idea yet. And it's built in! Impossible!
- SublimeRuin, on 10/10/2007, -10/+36Ya know - I love Apple...I do. But for christ's sake - this isn't news.....
- CraigJ, on 10/10/2007, -5/+21OK, you people who are complaining that this is low res, this is a WEBCAM. 1.3 megapixels is the standard for webcams. check out http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/webcam_communications/webcams/devices/241&cl=us,en
- trylleklovn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17it's not like the optics will get any better just because you enlarge the amount of pixels registered...
- Duncan3, on 10/10/2007, -4/+20NASA uses about that. 1.3 _good_ MP will beat 10 cheap MP any way of the week.
- Pifman, on 10/10/2007, -13/+24Yeah they should do their STREAMING VIDEO with 6 Megapixels! Jeez! Compare the "in use" quality of the iSight camera and any other webcam, then come in here with your sarcastic talk.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/webcam_communications/webcams/devices/243&cl=us,en
That's an $80 camera and it's only VGA. You have to spend $130 for a 1.3 megapixel camera from Logitech and they have nothing with a resolution higher than that. Perhaps you are confused by the fact that we are talking about webcams, not still image cameras. - CompTechNSX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Buried for lack of exclamation points and use of BREAKING or AMAZING in title. (okay, this is lame)
- dignick, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Well its news to me, and a nice surprise from my shiny new macbook pro. Captures at 26fps for me. :D
- yoda17, on 10/10/2007, -5/+10http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm
- PathDaemon, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7I'm, relatively speaking, a Mac fanboy, and have ***** no idea why this is on the front page. This ***** happened months ago and is hardly news. All it means to me is that badly written software that uses iSight is now broken and has to be updated.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I'm with you on this. I certainly wouldn't digg this one. Also, I'd rather hear about upgraded optics. I'm tired of companies getting away with continuing to push the megapixel myth. It's all about the optics.
- Billions, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You're thinking of digital cameras, mr. smart. This is a WEB CAM, and 1.3 megapixel WEB CAM is above and beyond the VGA standard.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Do you realize how ludicrous your post is? I'm actually not sure if you are being serious or trying to yank my chain.
- CraigJ, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4how many FPS?
- dignon, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Gotta love all the MS fanboy quips. "Oh, this is SO low compared to my stand-alone camera!" WAAAAaaaaaaa!
Well, DUH!!!!!! Its a Frackin WEB CAM, you idiots. Most PCs *don't even include a webcam as standard equipment*. Not to mention that PC webcams are usually 352x288 rez. and 15 fps. Not hi-rez, full motion capture. Gawd, you're all such idiots... oh right, that's why you still use PCs.
Finally, this is NOT news. Apple thinks its SO important that they don't even list the specs for the camera on their web page... again, because its a WEBCAM. The only reason anyone is digging this story is just to piss off all the windows whiners. I did. - Avian00, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4That's a great article! Very informative. I always knew I couldn't see much of a difference in quality between my old 3MP camera and my new 6MP one. In fact, I've even thought that the 6MP camera takes WORSE pictures than my old 3MP one!
- chrisxkelley, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4My iPhone has a 2mp camera.... lol wut?
- PAJK, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Well, yeh...
- cmilki, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2What's a "Rizr" again?
- PathDaemon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2They stopped making them because there are enough to go around. You'll have no problem finding one online if you so desire.
By the time every iSight in the world has either been destroyed by some website to get hits or found a loving home, you will have moved up to a newer computer. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3the reason why is b/c there is a lot of software to run even $20 USB cams on a mac and after the Performa era they want to keep things as streamlined as possible
- aryayush, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3No, it isn't hard. Video conferencing in iChat works miraculously smooth even on my paltry 192KBps connection. Skype, on the same connection, stutters and is quite unsatisfactory.
- Satanael, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I think that's the problem.
Someone went through the trouble of pushing an article to front page telling everyone that an amazing cutting-edge company has decided to use industry standard.
Mind blowing. - xerikx, on 10/10/2007, -13/+15camera phone killer!
- mirunit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2My N95 has a 5.0MP Camera with Autofocus! 640x480 30 FPS Video.
- johnpaul191, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2yeah, Mac Mini and Mac Pro models lack cameras, so it's weird they don't sell them. they are really good quality cameras, at least in my experience with webcam type cameras. you take things like auto-focus for granted till you use a dinky webcam that doesn't have it.
i guess that's why there are constant rumors Apple will make displays with built in iSight, but it still is odd they don't offer one standalone. besides, built-in iSight is for video conferencing etc, the standalone iSight can be pointed at anything... like out a window. i guess it's up to the 3rd parties. - Billions, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If Apple is ripe for "Star Trek" jokes with a built-in 1.3 Mp webcam, what is the average Windows box with a logitech VGA webcame then? "Gilligan's Island?"
- mirunit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You know like a RAZR or a SLIVR you know - because 'e' is bad.
- lintmonkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Change your port.
http://www.grc.com/sn/SN-036.txt - chroko, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Liar. New iSights are going for $350+ on eBay (almost triple retail). 2/3rds of Apple's desktop range does not have an official camera: Apple cinema displays don't have an integrated camera on them. You can buy a *brand new* Mac Pro or Mac Mini with a cinema display this afternoon - and still have no webcam.
I would have preferred an iSight - but I ended up getting a $70 Logitech USB webcam. I'm happy with it as a webcam (out-of-the-box since it's standards compliant) - but I was disappointed to find that it doesn't work with Delicious Library since it can't focus close enough.
I'm extremely unhappy with these stupid product decisions that Apple seems to keep making. I'm just glad I got an "old" keyboard before the horrible new design. - mirunit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Not just any power cable, a magsafe power cable.
- Whosawhatsis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1My phone has a 3 megapixel camera. Of course, that's for still photos, video barely goes above qvga, but that's presumably an issue of processing power, in which category the iMac most certainly kills my phone.
- thenome, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You can use any dv camcorder (they are cheep enough) or many web cams with opensource mac usb cam drivers.
- mirunit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That depends on what type of phone you have.
- okto, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1We knew this MONTHS ago. Buried because not news.
- CraigJ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1well, there is that....
- kickasspodcast, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yay and my 50 dollar nokia phone has a better camera yay! Hope it takes video unlike the iphone ffs

http://www.reasoner.org/ - Kappa00, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I think that I remember reading somewhere that NASA's cameras use _excellent_ sensors and lenses which provide better picture quality than most 10MP cameras.
- elephanty, on 10/19/2008, -0/+0So what? Dell laptops come with 2.0 megapixel webcams built-in.
- GriesChase, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0The first step towards vice is to shroud innocent actions in mystery, and whoever likes to conceal something sooner or later has reason to conceal it.
- ryanwarnersteel, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4I see your jest and raise you sir!
- peterman81, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Where's the word "revolutionary"?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Apple, the standards compliance company!
- zezerik, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0is this supposed to be bad news or good news? cause if that isn't a typo that should read gigapixel... then who gives a *****
- BossKey, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1don't get me started about Ken Rockwell...
- danjal, on 10/10/2007, -6/+5Why did they stop selling the isight as a seperate unit? i'd spent days searching for an isight, only to come to the conclusion that if you want one you have to buy a new mac, does apple always just forget about its old fan base? Well, not that my machine is old, hell its one of the new mac mini!
