- hove, on 10/12/2007, -3/+55surely to be a clone you have to be a copy of something, i know that tech companies are quick but there is no way what so ever that lg could have seen the iphone on Tuesday and managed to produce a cloned product by Saturday. i love the iphone but the description implies that this is a copy and that is demonstrably false.
- JayD16, on 10/12/2007, -6/+36Wouldn't this make the iPhone an LG clone?
- trenchancy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28Except that it's already won two awards, before the iPhone was even announced.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Exactly, FIC announced this last november and it is going on sale within the next few weeks:

There is no way in hell that apple was the first company to come up with the idea of a touchscreen phone. - blaze03, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Buried for being inaccurate. And obviously powered by fanboyism.
- Leer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13the LG phone was announced before the iPhone
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Heh, NEC and Samsung have em too!

- yankeesfan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11dugg because of the product. Your comments are off-base however. Apple isn't God; even they get their ideas from elsewhere. Steve Jobs didn't invent the touchscreen.
- infinitespecter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Marked as inaccurate because LG didn't clone anyone.
- KimuSan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Touchscreen phones has been out for years. take a look at HTC/Qtek and their nice phones. I just love my HTC Trinity. Can do what the IPhone can do + much much more.
- r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"I think they both look very similar and that if someone can operate an Iphone, they will have no problems operating the LG phone."
I can operate my current smartphone, the problem is it a complete pain in the ass with a slow, ugly interface. And it's unnecessarily COMPLICATED.
LG doesn't manage to address the slow interface, at least not from that video. It seems very choppy, which just goes to prove how good Core Animation is.
You still have to use scrollbars on the LG, rather than just scrolling the screen. You still have to select a file and then select to open it, rather than just click to open. It's just an extra pointless step. And is still hung up on the mouse-centric interface, where as Apple are taking it in a completely different finger-centric direction. - tmatyt95, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I guess if LG had 1 hour to sell their phone then it would be different. As it stands we know a lot more about the Iphone than we do the LG phone. Just because a phone is different does not make it inferior. I am going to wait until it is released before judging it,
Regards,
Matt - Geodriehoek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, just wanted to say.. The LG was there before the release of the iPhone, so why could it be an iClone?
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Considering that this is going to be introduced as the Prada phone in Europe, I would expect it to be more expensive. I'll be surprised if this one comes in under $800 with the Prada logo on it - though LG might sell the plain jane one for $500.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You win 1st place for not being able to spot obvious sarcasm. Well done.
- mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2nah, the LG KE850 was demonstrated months ago, and has received a couple awards for design. it's just coincidence, and logical progression.
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2.. and people wonder why there is such a distaste for Apple fans.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Um, so? I can stick that same background on my old 486 running win95, but that doesn't mean its an apple computer running an apple OS.
- nzl10, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3this LG phone is not even close to what the ApplePhone has shown in the keynote….
it might have the same physical form factor, but that is about it.
no scrolling without scrollbars
no two finger zoom
sluggish interface
web browser?
multitasking?
and so on…
it looks like the interface tries to emulate real buttons instead of using the real potential of a touchscreen
lame. - r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah cos there's nothing new about the multi-touch interface, or scrolling without having to use a scrollbar, or having a FULL web browser where you can see the whole page (Pocket IE sucks ass completely and Mozilla browser on my smartphone is soooo slow and eats up the RAM like there's no tomorrow), and nice rich email (my Smartphones e-mail is very ugly).
I say give credit where it's due, rather than just gloss over it. Apple has done something revolutionary, get over it.
[/sarcasm] - hankyone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think its neither LG or Apple Inc, Nintendo started all this touch screen frenzy
- rlombardo, on 11/05/2008, -2/+3apple fanboys unite! dorks.
- cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@KimuSan
It's important to know what you're talking about. Someone just said that Apple was the first to market with Multi-Touch, and you responded that cellphone's have had touchscreen's for years (note: these are two different features). Then you went on to say that your cell phone has everything Apple's has and more. I'm all for "keeping it real", but if you mean your phone has visual voicemail, Google maps/satelitte photos, real-Internet browser, HTML e-mail, and a 320x480 3.5 inch screen... by all means, let's see your spec sheet.
And, is "this" your Trinity, or should you also be noting a model number?

Also, one reason I haven't purchased GPS apps/service for my current phone, is that I can tell it'd be a ***** experience. Having used some very nice GPS systems, like those in the Lexus, I'd have to say it'd better be damn good before I pee my pants over GPS in my phone. Right now, Apple's Google Maps implementation looks extremely usable to me. Try as I might, I've not found one demonstration on another phone that looked half as appealing. They're usually accompanied by some form of "be thankful it's even IN the phone"-type attitude I'm just sick of by now. I find it hard to believe that no other "equally capable" cell phone manuacturers know how to record a video of their phone in action (perhaps their "mapping" features), and upload the damn thing to YouTube. It can't be that hard, can it?

I'm not a violent man, but I sware, if you're not interested in being honest about not just features, but execution, you're wasting everyone's time. - cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sadly, I'd love to say LG isn't a "clone", and while technically, it isn't... it clearly derives its "look" ( shown here: http://www.slashphone.com/89/6073/page2.html ) from the MacOS ( pick any generic screenshot and you'll see what I mean ).
Like this one for instance:
http://www.guidebookgallery.org/screenshots/macosx103
While, all hats off to them for doing so... people are frantically whipping out "skins of the iPhone right now for their existing phones, sewing even more confusion.
--I think the mania around this comes from some very basic points of contention:
1.) LG's KE850's interface was obviously designed to be the "iPhone" Apple would have done, given Apple's highly influencial design choices. I guarantee, whoever directed the artwork gathered up all the more interesting "iPhone" possibles out there and considered them. In fact, if you look at the video by Gregory Desantis released back in May of last year, watch how the phone's "dial screen" looks when it opens up. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3168733759916419298 Back in June, his version alone generated over 1 million views between YouTube, Google Video, and other sites, and got mentioned and large magazines like New York Times and Stuff Magazine.
2.) LG's "chocolate" series has been such a raging success in the phone/mp3 space, that there has been pressure to arrive at the "next thing", which for a long time since the arrival of the ROKR, has been expected from Apple ( http://www.futuremusic.com/news/august2006/appleiphonenow.html ) With rumors on a full-screen virtual interface raging, that seems an obvious direction if technical capability isn't an issue.
3.) As someone who likes the iPod interface, and tried earnestly to use LG's chocolate phone once before declaring "this really sucks", LG had a vested interest in being the one to release the truer convergence of the iPod and the cell phone, especially if Apple remained "mum" or disinterested in such a solution.
Considering how original and USABLE the iPhone appears in the many product demonstrations we've seen of it, its a clear winner over the LG KE850 on coherent interface design, but rgw KW850 is still looking like a winner regardless, as it appears from the recent Phone House vid of a prototype LG KE850 on YouTube ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5916aOMQNI ), that LG's phone has much less work done on interface usability (note that the iPhone doesn't actually use "scroll bars" on lists, KE850 has no accelerometer for spin UI control, doesn't feature multi-touch "pinching", etc), that it will be smaller (400x240 vs iPhone's 480x320), and cost less. Right now, we know next to nothing of the KE850's specs. Much less than we do about the iPhone, even though its supposed to be shipping in March. --Which, come to think of it, just seems weird. - oopspoops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ahhhhh. sooo innaccurate
- Keloran, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Not a copy, but the Interface looks slow and crappy
- nofrak1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LG phone was first. Buried as inaccurate.
- r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It does however mean that if LG used as a default background for the device, they'll likely get their asses kicked though.
- cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple iPhone will cost $499 and $599. Conversely, LG's Prada phone (KE850) will start at $776. START. Gulp. If the videos on YouTube are any indication, the interface is pretty hurky-jerky. Nice snag on grabbing a high-profile style brand to push it with. Smart move, but... lacking "cover flow", visual voice-mail, blazing fast interface, and adaptable full-featured browser will certainly kick LG in the pants. I get the impression though, that everyone wanting an iPhone outside of the US might consider settling for this one.

Sorry LG, but the days of the basic progress bars and text for music players are pretty much on the way out. Give us album art and snappy interfaces already. - DrDabbles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Buried as a tool bag.
- KimuSan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Actually LG has announced that their phone will be out in March.
- jwdav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not an "iPhone Clone", not even close - the only thing the two phones have in common is that they are touch screen phones.
- r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The LG interface isn't innovative though. It's exactly the same as what is already out there, with the exact same interaction as any other phone, the only difference is you use your finger instead of a stylus.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3The display is a MUCH better aspect ratio than the iPhone.
- washcapsfan37, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ugh, why does everything about the iPhone have to degenerate into this rabid fanboy vs. anti-fanboy *****? I don't think Apple had spies camped out at the LG and every other cell phone developer's company HQ (nor the other way around). I'm sure the concept of a large touch screen cell phone with MP3 and camera has been out for a long time -- ever heard of a PDA?? The more likely scenario for the similar shape and design was that the manufacturers who make the components (did you really think Apple and LG make their own touchscreen LCDs?) didn't release the parts until the same time to both companies so they could make their demo products. Why was LG's first on the market? Probably because they are using a home-brewed OS that's derived from their existing cell phone's OSes. Apple had to custom-build their OS from scratch (although it came from OSX, but OSX to my knowledge has never run on a cell phone.) Plus, it seems Apple's is a bit more complicated (integrated iPod w/ 8 GB memory and web browsing definitely seemed more advanced).
To me, it seems no one "cloned" the other. It was just the availability of components that finally spurred this race for who was first, LG went the faster and more stripped down route and looks like they'll hit market first. But Apple'sphone offers much more and IMO a better interface (with a huge price tag, too.) It'll be interesting to see which will do better in the long run. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7iPhone is turning out to be a combination of stolen names and plagarised technology with a new design.
- tmatyt95, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I think they both look very similar and that if someone can operate an Iphone, they will have no problems operating the LG phone.
Regards,
Matt
P.S Hopefully the LG will be cheaper and not tied to a single carrier. - boejangles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gizmodo had this phone on their main page at least 2 weeks ago, so no clone.
- r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I was going to say just the same. The interface doesn't hold up to the iPhone. I think the similarities end at it's touch screen really. It has scrollbars, instead of the iPhones nice scrolling. The interface requires to click a video, and then click open, same goes for any content (unlike the iPhone's just click the item). No sensors of any kind, accelerometer, Proximity, or ambient light.
It's a poor person's iPhone. - mediamanbkk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1From what I read, the iPhone isn't going to be the all singing, all dancing masterpiece that the Apple fanboys were hoping for and they are so dissapointed they have to sidetrack by pointing out that Apple has patents... and not the usual bragging about the functions and features of the thing.
I wish though that everyone would wait until it comes out on the streets (When will it come to Bangkok I wonder?) and then put it head to head with its competitors. - KimuSan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Remember that a lot of the functionality in the iPhone prototype was just placeholder graphics (according to those who has actually used it for more than 2mins). In some points the GUI is still sluggish and a lot of obvious phone functionality is simply not going to be in the iPhone.
It looks good, sure! but the graphics artists at apple has always been among the best. They have put together some good ideas, Sure! but most (if not all) of the ideas have been demonstrated in other phones/pda's earlier. - r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1[/sarcasm] should be before "I say give..."
- KimuSan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@cleverboy.
Multi-touch screen in a phone/pda has been demonstrated in the FIC:
http://www.funponsel.com/blog/archives/2006/11/10/fic-to-release-fic-gta001-linux-phone-with-built-in-gps/
The FIC phone is set to be out on the marked within a couple of weeks......iPhone is not on marked the next 6 month.
and yes that is my Trinity (except that mine is all black). It is also called P3600 and in some places rebranded to other names too.
yes it has google maps (satellite, map and hybrid) and with the gps turned on it even tells me where I am on the map. Besides google maps it of cause has MS live maps and yahoo maps.
It does have a browser (actually I have 4 different installed right now - freedom of choice, you know!) and it does have an email client, but I prefer another one so I just installed that one (try that on the I phone). I watch movies and streaming tv - both via the WIfi when at home/work (or where I can find a signal) or if I am on the move, I can use the 3G connection. The same goes for my mp3 collection which I listen to via one of the available players. I can even connect it to my home computer via Wifi and listen to the music on that one remotely.
It has a smaller screen thats true, but just try to fit the iPhone in your pocket (that no problem with mine and the screen has plenty of room for what I need).
The interface might now be as glassy and shiny as the iPhone, but what can you expect from MS. Put on a nice skin and suddently it looks alot better (there was actually a skin out looking as the iPhone..20 hours later the Apple lawyers was after the creator and made him take it down). too bad. - cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1--And as a note, I realize that Google Maps does not equal GPS, but there are many many practical cases where GPS isn't really needed as much as basic real-time mapping services. My impression is that the amount of integrated devices that come out as "add-ons" to the iPhone after launch will be very telling.
- r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Maybe Apple will be vetting any developers before they allow third-party apps on the phone, so that they can protect the experience.
But the interface and user experience so far from the iPhone seems like the best I've seen.
My smartphone has frozen because of some apps I were using when a call came in. Sometimes the app just quits when a call comes in. Sometimes it just reboots the phone. That sort of thing I could handle from a desktop/laptop computer, but not from my Phone. - cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@KimuSan
My iPhone (when I get it) will fit in my pocket if I wanted to put it there. I don't put my cellphones in my pants pocket anymore, so its a moot point... I use a leather carrier. It's probably better you don't go on about what your phone can do, when you're not sure if a particular feature will or won't be on the iPhone too (like streaming). Most people, in my opinion, have agreed that 3G support isn't really here or there at this point, but that seemlessly switching between WiFi and network Internet access is much more valuable to your pocketbook... y'know?
I had someone swear to me that their phone was 3G (because their new phone had such great reception and speed), before some research made it clear that they were still 2G (just a good phone). I'm glad you're so happy with your phone though. If you can YouTube it at some point and demonstrate its great features IN USE (like the links I showed earlier), I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one thankful for it. Right now, I'm still looking at Apple's site, and being impressed.
Regardless of how much YOU like it, my assumption will always be that until I SEE it, there'll be something exceedingly "lame" that you're overlooking because you're willing to excuse it (my friend does that to me all the time, the "gotcha"). For instance, does the Trinity allow you to add album art to your music? Does it do "bookmarking" when playing long audio tracks? Does it have a "description" component to each track that you can access?
While you claim "freedom of choice" on your mobile phone browser... if all your "choices" are lame, it doesn't say anything useful. The browser I saw on the iPhone looked to be THE most usable browser I've EVER seen on a phone... and more, I actually dig that its an iPod too, which means I should be able to boot the drive on my computer and sync my podcasts to it. We'll see though. It's nice that unlike many of these other products that are "coming", the iPhone has been held by people willing to detail its usability, and we don't have to feel like we're all l33t haxxors to get the most out of it. - imthe1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wash cap has it right. There are only some many shapes a device with a touch screen and few other bottons can take. It could be round, but that would suck. Most laptop computers I see all look basically the same, flip up LCD screen, qwerty keyboard, CD drive.... Are they copying each other or is what sets then apart the hadware inside, the UI and the software they run? Same with the phone. There may be several that look a like, and they may have similar features, internet, mp3, email...., but they're UI is different and I'm willing to bet that Apple's will rock and just work!!
- sparkmonkeyz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Look at the background that is being used. It is the OS X default one.
- jayaqt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3ipod = 'LG KE850 clone'
LG KE850 = Suddenly LG's KE850 cloned itself huh? -
