There's cooler stuff to come - we're working on it. - rollfaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Kismac is a wireless stumbler much like Kismet (Linux), NetStumbler (Windows), or MacStumbler (Mac). It allows you to see the signal strength, and a variety of other information concerning wireless neworks in the range of your card. You need to select a driver in the preferences, depending upon what card you have. Most of those cards are PCMCIA cards, with the exception of airport extreme (built in) and Prism2 usb cards. If you have anyone questions, join us at the IRC chatroom mentioned above.
- rollfaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Developers are open to suggestions. You can find us in #kismac at irc.freenode.net
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7However, it's important to note that KisMac operates in passive mode, unlike most other stumblers, so it can find networks with hidden SSIDs, see probe requests, and detect networks with a much greater range than an active stumbler (e.g. macstumbler or netstumbler). It also transmits nothing, meaning it's totally undetectable.
- chmod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Interesting idea, however didn't work on my machine. Installed, and tried to run. It spun its wheels for a while waiting to put my card into passive mode, then told me it couldn't. My wireless showed no card installed, so I uninstalled kismac and rebooted. Luckily my card is back up, otherwise I wouldn't be posting this. I think I'll wait for a more stable release.
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The server's collapsing under the load it seems:
Here's a direct download link.
http://ftp.tu-ilmenau.de/pub/software/binaervarianz/KisMAC021a.zip - Kaveh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Well done peeps, now all we need is real injection support for airport extreme =)
Any build that has this?
I know the flooding and deauthentication sorta works using both airport passive and prism usb drivers, but re-injections still don't work for me. - SenatorPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5How about this?
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Finally,_a_linux_driver_for_the_Airport_Extreme_
Will this contribute? - nroth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Agh, would of so made my day if it supported MacBook Pro's...
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It zapped all knowledge of an AE wireless card on my iBook! Reinstalling this will reinstall the airport extreme driver:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportupdate2005001.html - BugDave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes, KisMAC lives!
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Unfortunately, no, until Broadcom give us some kind of specs, or the device is properly reverse-engineered, we can't do that.
- kron123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The new Airport Extreme passive support works great. Thanks guys.
- aquax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Now let's hope it's not a year till we see passive mode for MacBook Pros.
Awesome job on the update though :-) - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Impossible to reverse? It's possible to turn it off.
Permanent mode just turns the option for monitor mode on by default, as enabling or disabling it requires a reload of the driver (which sometimes completely messes up if it's done when the computer is running. It's generally not a good idea to play with kernel drivers while the system's running.). - DigDugDigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Kinda sucks tho if there isn't support for passive mode with Airport Extreme on a Macbook Pro... carrying around a iMac to sniff networks doesn't sound like fun.
- TripOverFeet, on 10/14/2007, -1/+4It's about time they allow APE users to enable passive mode. The only problem is that after you are done you either need to keep the App open or if you want to quit it you will need to restart to regain access to wireless networks.
And MacBook Pro users can just plug in another wireless card to use KisMac. So calm down and stop ranting. - t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The MacBookPro has atheros wifi. And it's a new Atheros chip. As yet not seen before. Makes things very hard.
- KissTheRing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3and don't forget the very cool mapping feature, that's my favorite feature
- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4time to go crack some wep. haha
- Po0py, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Desperatly need to be able to inject packets using Airport Extreme. Now that would be awesome.
- Ludwig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just tried uninstalling it completely and reinstalling it. That appears to have fixed it and installed the correct drivers. I suggest doing that, if you're having problems.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3and a mirror with both the software and the google earth gps plugin
http://www.zigzap.net/KisMAC021a.rar - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I archived the folder using Winrar and added a recovery record to the file, this was after extracting it from the zip. If you don't trust it though then feel free to just wait on the official site.
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Ummm, that second mirror has a different MD5 on the kismac DMG...
The contents of the files within the DMG seem to match though. - chmod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Why exactly was this dugg down? Is any criticism (including constructive criticism) too unhappy for digg? Believe it or not I was providing potentially useful feedback on this product especially because the developers are on this forum. Man I hate the trigger happy mods around here.
- KissTheRing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Passive stumbling on airport, very nice but I just purchased an Orinoco card from eBay 2 months ago. Oh well it'll be nice to use the integrated card and not have the Orinoco sticking out.
- chmod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2^^ Kaveh
No need to be offended. Unstable was not meant as an insult, as it may still be great software. You must understand, however, that when a release is labeled "alpha" it is by definition not necessarily as stable as a beta or a post beta release. - twinspop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, into that PC Card slot. Oh wait, now where'd it go? :-) Do USB dongle-type wireless dealios work?
- Ludwig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Using my 12" Powerbook, both in permanent and "not permanent" modes, it's telling me the drivers were not found. This is after rebooting several times.
Curious why it seems others are having such success with it. - macluvjay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Still no packet injection for AE. Don't get the wrong impression. Developement is still underway, but this is useless for WEP cracking with an Airport Extreme card. Airport cards (802.11b) have been able to do packet injection for some time now with KisMAC. If that's your purpose, I suggest a G3 iBook, or a supported adapter for your current Apple notebook (DWL-122). Still, much props to the KisMAC folks for their hard work on this project.
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, that's talking about D-Link's driver. It also has a fix. It can only reinject B packets, but it mostly works for G networks - as B and G are backwards-compatible. Do an authentication flood, then try reinjecting.
- Kaveh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Don't be frightened if that happens, all you need to do is to reboot and it'll recognize your card again without having to delete kisMac.
I read about that little glitch somewhere on the site before i installed so no panicking and no calling great free software unstable needed.
kisMac and Airport will work either by a simple reboot, or you need to make sure your airport card doesn't try to connect to every available network automatically. (Probably bigger chance of it messing up when kisMac isn't shut down properly)
Thanks again for great, mostly working software ;) - MaxwellH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1unfortunately, according to http://kismac.de/_trac/wiki/DWL-122 it's no longer functional on 10.4, AND it supposedly is only capable of reinjection on B networks.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Maybe we should all pitch in and buy Geoff a Macbook/Macbook Pro so he can hurry his lazy ass up and add injection to APE.
Who wants to start a Paypal fund? - MaxwellH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Could anyone comment on the most cost effective, functional setup using a USB dongle and a GPS? I had previously tried about a half-dozen dongles, including ones mentioned on the website and precisely NONE of them worked. I also have no idea about good, but cheap, GPSs.
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MaxWellH:
GPS - USGlobalSat BU-353 USB GPS
USB dongle: D-Link DWL-122 - sgtunix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It works great with my AirPort Express card now set in permanent-monitoring mode. (Why it's apparently impossible to reverse this action I don't know).
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ok. Some part of the DMG must have got changed. The files INSIDE the dmg are exactly the same, so there's nothing to worry about.
- mormandy1, on 11/08/2008, -0/+0Dude, you need a dlink DWL-G122 C1. Ebay, $20. I got mine, now you go get yours k? It does packet injection. NOTE: DON'T get A1 or B1 series, they don't have injection. The C1 is pretty easy to find. If they don't specify the series on Ebay, ASK.
- garretttr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Developers are working on adding drivers for the newest cards. Also, keep in mind that the build posted on the kismac.de is FAR outdated. If you do a SVN checkout, you can get a build with a lot more stuff =)
- iMactel, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Can someone explain what a stumbler is? I don't quite understand what KisMAC does.
- mksamanes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would encourage developers to try to solve the problem with the inyection driver that mbp users are having with the aiport extreme card, because I'ts pretty sure that the new macs with core 2 duo will have this card too many other people will have this problem. I think it would be the best feature to have right now. Keep up the good work, this app is amazing nice job
- Kaveh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ofcourse, I hear ya =)
Don't know why I felt the urge to protect kisMac, I just use it against neighbors from time to time =) - ragonamuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0or, you could just buy a prism2 card that plugs in your usb port, then there's no waiting for features that already exist. a whole 15 bucks on ebay.

- whoutz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I only get 33/100 signal maximum from my neighbors downstairs, and without krismas, I would never be able to get online! I love this product.
- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1ah, i wasn't aware. that sucks.....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Are you retarded? Did you even read what this program does? "Krismas"?
- Merlot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0 Hi
I have a MacBook with Mac OS X version 10.4.8, when i start to scan in KisMAC i get this error msg.
