- ahpro, on 10/11/2008, -5/+61As i was reading that title, i was getting more and more excited.
"Kevin Rose" :-)
"Kevin Rose drops" :O
"Kevin Rose drops MacBook" OMG :-P
"Kevin Rose drops MacBook Blu-Ray Rumor" Oh. :-( - jamauss, on 10/11/2008, -5/+52Got a VAIO notebook about 2 months ago and it's got a Blu-Ray drive in it.
$585. - Urkel, on 10/11/2008, -4/+41PC notebooks in the $11-1200 range have had Blu-Ray drives for a while now and there isn't much of a pricehike for it. So if Apple does it right then Blu-Ray can be put into Macbooks with very little extra cost. My hope is that instead of charging for better colors then Blu-Ray will be the premium feature that will differentiate it from the cheaper models.
- battletops, on 10/11/2008, -6/+32$11
Seriously, I have been getting ripped off. - Branchex, on 10/11/2008, -4/+29I don't see the laptops getting Blu-Ray drives before the Mac Pro, especially since they are supposed to be thinner.
- rowlodge, on 10/11/2008, -1/+25apparently apple is using kevin for their "Viral" campaigns. kind of like microsofts ,"major nelson" now we have "major rose"
- EatChex89, on 10/11/2008, -2/+23Time to upgrade my iBook. (yes I still have and use one of those)
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -4/+19don´t believe the hype
- ashthediggr, on 10/11/2008, -5/+19Warning: If I recall correctly, Kevin did make the point that this was from a 'bad' source. His good/reliable sources are in the iPod/iPhone business. Just saying.
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -0/+13normal blu ray drive 200 or less
apple blu ray 500 or more - Noctem, on 10/11/2008, -0/+13Apple doesn't really get the "little extra cost" thing. They're still charging a preposterous $300 for an upgrade from 1GB to 4GB of ram.
- apple1, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1250GB optical storage on one disc (if it's a Blu-Ray burner, that is).
- dullnation, on 10/11/2008, -1/+13Like the two battery iphone with pull out keyboard?
- Ellipsys, on 10/11/2008, -0/+11I'm not interested at all in a BD-ROM drive, I AM interested in a BD-RW multilayer + DVD-RW super multi drive. In short, I really hope they don't cry "OMG BLU RAY HERE!" and provide a read-only drive. I have little to no desire for blu-ray movies. I have great desire to use a 25 or 50gb disc as a cheap form of archival media, to burn as I please.
- l800LEMMINGS, on 10/11/2008, -2/+13i can see this being true as apple is close with Disney as well as other studios and even if it was subsidized by some of the studios it would be to both benefit to help drive holiday sales. Although i don't know if they would be willing to cut into their itune's sales.
- ericdano, on 10/11/2008, -4/+14God, how many Kevin Rose things have been on Digg in the last week. WTF, did he decide to "work" or something?
- santaliqueur, on 10/11/2008, -2/+12Makin love
Makin love for two
Makin love for two minutes - antipoet, on 10/11/2008, -2/+12I really think I prefer digital-only media at this point. I think extra hardware is a waste of resources. The software on my computer is upgradable which seems like it would reduce the need for new equipment. Why don't we focus on getting the HD media to our computers more quickly to be played from there rather than messing with discs. Or do we just like having stuff?
- MyNameIsGusto, on 10/11/2008, -0/+9Where'd you manage to get one that cheap? Ebay? The cheapest BD-rom laptop I've seen is $1000 (newegg).
- blackjack75, on 10/11/2008, -1/+9And the radeon 9550 in the last iteration of those was still better than the crappy intel GMA we get today on low end machines. Hoping for a change on this level.
- ZenPirate, on 10/11/2008, -0/+8My prediction is superdrives on all models, and blu ray on high end/optional. It would be great for backups, and making hi def video.
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -0/+8A blu-ray upgrade for my mac Pro only cost me 250.00
If Apple does put BD in the laptops then we can look forward to the important update... DVD Studio Pro burning to BD. - Philbert, on 10/11/2008, -1/+8The HP I bought in January has an HD-DVD drive in it, does that count for anything?
- kajoob, on 10/12/2008, -0/+6Pretty ***** annoying - the guy walks around like he owns the place.
- lebondarken, on 10/11/2008, -1/+6YAY STUFF!
- dullnation, on 10/11/2008, -0/+5My highly reliable source at Apple.
- Gee1004, on 10/11/2008, -1/+6I've been hearing that for 10 years
- blankoboy, on 10/11/2008, -0/+5Won't Kevin Rose rumour up a new Mac Mini or mini-tower?
- bbqsalad, on 10/11/2008, -0/+5the guy you just gave money to by browsing this site.
- hater2win, on 10/11/2008, -0/+5You seem to have forgotten that Blu-Ray is a storage medium, not a video format.
The ability to burn or read discs that can contain 50GB+ of data is fantastic. - srg13, on 10/12/2008, -0/+4CD is dead? Since when? Last time I checked, there was still a great deal of software and music available on CD, as well as very cheap CD-RW disks. Saying DVD is in a critical condition is also laughable.
I also see great promise in Blu-Ray, having a very large amount of storage per disk now, and with the possibility to have 100GB disks with four layers (or more) in the future. What I don't find appealing is taking the time or bandwidth to download and store 50GB of video just to watch a movie. - Crazymaniacc, on 10/11/2008, -4/+8I read this: "Kevin Rose drops MacBook" and thought "Awesome" but it's just another lame fake rumour from Kev
- AncientWeird, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4I'm sure many of us here would like to hear where you shop.
- ShyGuy91284, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4I could def. see it as a $400 option on MacBooks and maybe a built-in feature on MacBook Pros.
- connorf, on 10/11/2008, -1/+5He could be using linux... You're using linux right?
- noonions, on 10/12/2008, -1/+5...and that's because it ships with an inferior operating system. Now, unless you decide to install linux (which i hope that you do, it's your best option in this situation) on top of that $585, you have to buy expensive antivirus software. and if you want it to come with awesome apps the way OSX does (garageband, iMovie) you have to pay a ***** of money for those things too. Plus apple has some of the best customer support ever. And that is why they can sell it for less. Because they are giving you less. People will digg me down, but its undeniable. windows is more expensive in the long run and it causes much more headache. which is why you hear of people switching from windows to mac, and never the other way around.
- srg13, on 10/12/2008, -0/+4Anyone who believes that being popular is the reason that Windows is essentially the least secure operating system either knows nothing about security, or nothing about how any other OSes work.
- Ellipsys, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4I think there will always be the need for physical media, optical or otherwise. We need something that can securely store data that, just perhaps, we want to remove from "the cloud" as a whole. There needs to be a solution for the "non-connected" - a place to store data with complete privacy that can only be accessed via physical means. Hard drives are cheap now, but if I want to make an archive of just one type of data (porn, an entire anime series, university projects etc.) I'm not going to go out of my way to buy an entire hard drive for it. Also, hard drives are a larger form factor, once you take into consideration power for them, and ease of hook up.
Flash media would be a good substitute, but it is still not completely cost effective. For instance a decent 4gb flash drive is roughly $10, while a 4.7gb DVD-R is under $0.50 if I purchase in bulk. In the event that Blu-Ray rewritable discs can come down to even $2.00 each for a dual-layer disc, that's still the cheapest mass storage available.
While I think you're right that blu-ray as a content delivery system is brain dead, it has a great future as an archival format for all of that cloud-delivered media. - kylejn, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4If it has a Blu-ray drive, they'll probably throw an HDMI output on there as well.
- rolf, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4No need for discs, I store mine on the internet... :)
- dosequis, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4NAY STUFF :|
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3Who cares, when will Apple Update Final Cut Studio to work with Blu-ray so I dont have to use Adobe Encore to burn BD movies?.
BD drive upgrades have been around for Macbooks and MBP's for years now, a little on the holy ***** expensive side, but they have been around. - SLockhart, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3If you payed someone you got scammed son.
- soljin, on 10/11/2008, -1/+4*clapping slowly* And the last horse crosses the finish line. I love these kinds of stories. Headline: Apple allows you the privilege of buying technology the rest of the world has had for 2 years.
- kylejn, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3I still have and use a 12" iBook. I've been thinking about upgrading it for a while, and depending on how these new MacBooks look, now might be the time.
- noonions, on 10/12/2008, -0/+3i will buy a new computer when it has support for both blu-ray and usb 3.0
- IanPR, on 10/11/2008, -1/+4Exactly my thought process hahahah
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -1/+4"I really think I prefer digital-only media at this point. I think extra hardware is a waste of resources. "
Cause you intend on storing your entire movie collection in your laptop? - jenshik, on 10/12/2008, -0/+3only.
