- NidStyles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Some of that stuff requires knowledge above a new OS X user's experience. The Gimp is a pain in the ass to install, and if you've never worked with a *nix environment before, you'll spend hours not understanding how to do it.
I watched an associate try it for three hours, before confessing to have a Mac at home. It was entertaining to say the least. Good times. - foetal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2incomplete list. better list here. http://www.opensourcemac.org/
no digg - greasyp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This list sucks. Soooo much misinformation. Sooo many apps missing. Sooooo many bad recommendations.
- davdav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why is everybody pimping their own blogs...
lame - boicraig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2as a long time mac and pee cee user, am I the only one who thinks this list is cruddy?
no digg. ever. - Apricot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ucg1, welcome to a new platform. If Linux works better for you, go use Linux. Anyone who CAN use Linux ought to. If you think Linux packages are 'easy to install' then that makes you the 1% of the population that should use Linux now. Otherwise, you're going to have to snoop around and learn some new software.
Myself, I am perfectly happy using OS X.
The list in the link is crappy. But, I guess it's okay for a starter list for people who wonder, OMG I'm in OS X, where is the BROWSER? and desperately need guidance to the built-in browser.
The only real problem with the list is that it purports to be a COMPREHENSIVE list of what's out there, scattering in "all others are similar". That is completely wrong.
For the record, the programs I use regularly NOT MENTIONED AT ALL in their categories are:
Browser: Omniweb 5
Text Editor: TextMate and vi
FTP: Transmit, but Cyberduck is very good
P2P: Cabos
Office: NeoOffice/J - MadMan459, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Huge Mac Addict here and I think this list is horrible. Bad language, poor choices and lame explanations.
IE5 is horrible? Why? How about explaining that one a bit more, especially since this is geared toward WINDOWS users. (Answer: MS Quit updating it some time ago. Even MSN suggests you use something other than IE for Mac.)
Why avoid the FREE MS media player "at all costs"? Oh, you'd rather pay for a plugin for QT? Sorry, but "The Hard Way" is the best way for most. MS's media player for Mac isn't that bad.
The Gimp isn't an OS X native app yet, installing and learning it is a pain. If you're not a graphic artist but need an editing program, check out Photoshop Elements instead. (And it's not too much GD money... there's that fine language again.)
Whatever... this could have been a good, comprehensive and useful list. Instead it is an opinionated, foul-mouthed, pretty-much-useless-unless-your-needs-are-the-same-as-this-guy's list.
Meh. -digg - Rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"1. Camino is Firefox plus blubber, no list."
The only thing Camino and Firefox share is Gecko. Firefox is to XUL as Camino is to Cocoa. Just try out the browser for a week and you'll swear by it. - chrisutley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why is this on the home page? This list sucks.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who would do such a thing? :)
- macslut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1His list is crap and a complete waste of time. You'd be much better off going to VersionTracker.com or Download.com and entering the keyword of what you want. You can sort by popularity, user ratings, date, price/licensing, etc...
I'd much rather know that Camino averages 4 out of 5 stars from over 400 people, than 1 person (the idiot author) thinks "it's a bad idea". Likewise (according to the author), "Junior swears by Emacs" and "Fugu is also good, but for some reason I stopped using it a long time ago. I have no clue why, I just stopped using it." don't help at all. - pvera, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31. Camino is Firefox plus blubber, no list.
2. NeoOffice is not going to be released for OOo 2.0 and is effectively orphaned, no list.
3. The Gimp is now available as a bundle, just dragg Gimp.app anywhere in your HDD and it will work. If you don't have x11 installed, download it from Apple, zero configuration needed. - FarcicalFart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Crappy list. Camino, NeoOffice and other important apps are missing."
I noticed Camino was missing, which was surprising, but the link to OpenOffice also provides a link to NeoOffice. - DephexTwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The typical Linux distros provide most of the utilities I need are free and are easy to install. With OS X, I have to go hunting around for shareware utils to get the simplest things done."
Why do you hunt around when there is Versiontracker.com? - pvera, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Installing Gimp involves:
1. Downloading Gimp.app
2. Dragging Gimp.app to your apps folder
Learning Gimp has nothing to do with OS X, if it is easy or hard to learn it is because of Gimp, not because of OS X. - kcghost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Common Sense for any o.s. Crap. No Digg.
- one111one1one11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"buy a real mouse."
Doesn't Apple bring the new Mighty Mouse with new Macs?
http://www.apple.com/mightymouse/ - Horizons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What the hell's wrong with TextEdit?
I ***** love that program. - morgajel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know what you're all complaining about- the newer versions of gimp are very easy to use- they even have a nice big FREE book/tutorial out on the net.
if you can't use it, you're not trying. - teratoma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Crappy list... I dont know why so many people digg this.
for me, Quicksilver is must. - ucg1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@project2501
Can you actually argue anything I said besides just say "Wha?"
I'm not the only one who feels this about OS X. I'm giving it an honest chance (I really wanted it to work for me), and its disappointing so far. This is coming from someone who is a longtime UNIX/Linux user. I don't find OS X to be satisfactory as a UNIX workstation (at least compared to the typical Linux distro). The typical Linux distros provide most of the utilities I need are free and are easy to install. With OS X, I have to go hunting around for shareware utils to get the simplest things done. There always seems to be broken packages in Fink, if you haven't noticed that you simply don't use Fink very often. This is not a fault of Fink itself, its of the maintainers of the packages. And I hear from other Mac users that they always try to run a native app and avoid running X apps (the reason why no one likes OpenOffice on the Mac is because its an X app). I do the same, because, like I said before, the X server on OS X is very poorly integrated.
If you actually have an argument against what I'm saying I'd love to hear it. Or you can just say "Wha?" because you're so brainwashed by the hype that you think OS X is perfect and no one can possibly find it less than optimal for their uses. - WebCester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I second the suggestion for http://www.opensourcemac.org/. That list is a lot better.
- OttoReverse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"...and all those things run fine in Windows XP, too! You can get a computer that runs the other 95% of commercial software *and* run all the free software, too."
Yeah, and 100% of the viruses, malware, spyware, adware, ad nauseum! - KAMiKAZOW, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Crappy list. Camino, NeoOffice and other important apps are missing.
No digg from me. - goodcompany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty lame list. No mention of Quicksilver...and praising BBedit and leaving out TextMate is unforgivable.
- pbailey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty disappointing list. No digg from me!
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2If you don't put Camino on a OS X app list, you've insulted me.
- SirThom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good read.
- AttroPheed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Yeah, and 100% of the viruses, malware, spyware, adware, ad nauseum!"
Oddly enough I run XP on multiple machines without "100%" of those problems. If folks are too naive to keep from getting a virus in the year 2005 then a mac is what they deserve. - tgiles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The list of browsers is pretty short.
If you're looking for something pretty damned great when it comes to web browsers on OSX, check out Shiira (google for it). Uses WebCore and has a lot of very nice functions added.
cheers,
tom - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The typical Linux distros provide most of the utilities I need are free and are easy to install. With OS X, I have to go hunting around for shareware utils to get the simplest things done. "
examples - shanal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im just happy they had adium on there, if they didn't - this list would be completely bogus.
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4buy a real mouse.
- jorel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry, this is just a lame list.
- WebCester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quicksilver is great. I install it on every Mac I use, even if it isn't mine. I've gotten two people to keep using it. It has some issues once in a while, but it's such a timesaver.
- rdoger6424, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I apologize if this is off topic...
Can you install Linux packages into OSX using X11? - etx313, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Can you install Linux packages into OSX using X11?"
Nope, but you can compile them from source. - NidStyles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wasn't aware the newer version Gimp was so easy to install on OS X. I remember the first time I trie dit. It wasn't fun. I went on to use photoshop instead.
- Cippy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OS X is awesome. I use most of the Apps on that list, and I plan on using some of the others suggested.
Dugg. - nnonix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Heh, OSX people can't even get along with each other. MuWahahah!
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone saying there's a shortage of software is speaking about the Mac circa 1998. Go to Macupdate.com or versiontracker.com and search. There's no shortage unless you're a gamer, and even with games, it's not that bad.
- Paul_in_NC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well well. It looks like someone finally "got it". Morgajel you win the prize for being the one to finally figure out the true meaning of pvera's post.
- morgajel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the funny part is the people bitching about his ad-sese stuff. he isn't gonna make any money on it- he did this for 3 reasons:
- piss of random fanboys (in this case camino, which is funny)
- have the cool people add their own ideas so he can learn about new software.
- amusement
the $.50 he made from adsense didn't cover the bandwidth you guys used. - [ballistic], on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yet another example of a trend here at Digg: Create a post on your own blog with Google Adsense ads, then submit a Digg about your article in a lame attempt to get some ad revenue. Shameless.
- AnImAl999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually the list was pretty descent... I use linux myself modded out to look like OSX.. Alas.. No genie effect yet.. ;-P
- SystemError, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0real bad layout, no digg
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BBEdit rocks my world. Probably the best text editor in the world.
- neofactor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am surprised quicksilver (http://quicksilver.blacktree.com/) is not listed more on these sort of lists...
It is the number one app/utility I use more than anything else ever on my macs. In my mac community I seem to be constantly showing this to people and they simply love it... should be built in by now:
http://docs.blacktree.com/quicksilver/what_is_quicksilver - rob08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didnt know about Acquisitions before this article. Its a lot faster than limewire, although its a hefty sum they want for the entire package
- OttoReverse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Oddly enough I run XP on multiple machines without "100%" of those problems. If folks are too naive to keep from getting a virus in the year 2005 then a mac is what they deserve."
You're in the minority. The rest (not Digg readers of course) have zombie computers sending me spam! -
