- Lightstab, on 10/06/2009, -5/+46Let me sum up this stupid article for everyone:
"The Apple Tablet will basically do stuff." - rumblestrut, on 10/07/2009, -3/+43"The Macintosh uses an experimental pointing device called a 'mouse'. There is no evidence that people want to use these things."
- John C. Dvorak
http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/John_C._Dvorak - badqat, on 10/06/2009, -4/+33Everyone knows Dvorak loves getting Apple fans riled up. This one is no different. While I don't agree with the above poster that everything the curmudgeon says is worthless, I do know he takes pride in being able to rile up the loyal fans.
- theuniversal, on 10/06/2009, -22/+46You don't need to read the article to know that Dvorak's thoughts are garbage as usual. This is after all the same Dvorak who said Apple is making a huge mistake getting into phones, that Apple is just a computer maker and doesn't have a clue how competitive the handset market is (as if there were no competition in computers), and that the iPhone will go nowhere. His predictions for other companies are no better. It's incredible anybody still pays this guy to spout his nonsense.
- Raian, on 10/07/2009, -4/+26If people actually spent 5 minutes reading the article they would see Dvorak wasn't trying to incite Apple fanboy hate, or say something ludicrous...
All he does is basically sum up a lot of the current speculation out there: 1) It will be primarily used for new interactive e-books, internet, and run on the iPhone OS X variant 2) it will cost under $1,000 but over $500... he suspects $699-$899, which given Apple's track record and known tech costs does not seem wild at all... im sure some can imagine it even being over $1,000. 4) It will not be called the Newton 2...
It's amazing the number of fanboys that write comments purely on speculation and act like they've read the article.... GET A LIFE! - tofagerl, on 10/07/2009, -0/+11There _was_ no evidence that people wanted to use those things.
There is now :) - Xraven92, on 10/07/2009, -6/+16BAHHHHHH DVORK.ORG/BLOG BAHHHHH
- KrayzieKyd, on 10/07/2009, -2/+12"Who the heck needs this CRAP?"
- Crimsoneer, on 10/07/2009, -15/+24People still give a ***** about what this dude thinks?
- okcomputer01, on 10/07/2009, -0/+8"The absolute deterioration of the wiki concept is just a matter of time. Once spam mechanisms are developed to eat into these systems, the caretakers will be too busy to stop the public-driven deterioration. "
- John C. Dvorak
To be fair, everyone thought so. - inactive, on 10/06/2009, -30/+37Buried for Dvorak.
- MCA2142, on 10/07/2009, -3/+9***** ROLLOVER ADs
- imnojezus, on 10/07/2009, -0/+6I like hearing what he has to say, because generally the exact opposite will come true. He's Bizarro Nostradamus.
- PicklePower, on 10/07/2009, -1/+7Wow, guys. Maybe instead of dismissing the article altogether because it was written by Dvorak, we could look at what he's actually saying. Separate the arguer from the argument. This is simply one person's theories about what the Apple tablet could be like. This is no different than a collection of theories, like a gallery of mockups photos of tablets on Gizmodo. Yet that kind of article would get dugg up to the sky. Give it a break.
- catalysis, on 10/07/2009, -3/+9It's hard to find the article in that sea of advertisements.
- MtheoryX, on 10/07/2009, -0/+5Hey, ***** you, buddy!
- MacParrot, on 10/07/2009, -0/+5IT'LL SELL A MILLION WITH THAT FEATURE!
- seltaeb4, on 10/07/2009, -5/+9I always thought he was a stupid-ass.
- floejoe, on 10/07/2009, -0/+4I read the article, nothing outrageous there really. He even claims "One thing is certain: It will get everyone's attention. It's a battleship coming down a river."
Granted John is a cynic but it works well to offset all the gloating people express over new and unknown tech. - Yage2006, on 10/07/2009, -0/+4He is wrong about so many things I dont see why people still give a damn what he has to say.
- Kestrel, on 10/07/2009, -1/+4At issue is the fact that Dvorak has a LONG history of making a complete dog's dinner of tech predictions. Basically, he's wrong so often that if he says something won't be a success, you can be pretty sure it will dominate the market. He's a blow-hard who is so out of touch with technology that it's laughable. Why people keep reading his crap, I don't know.
- Yage2006, on 10/07/2009, -1/+4Hanging out with that nutcase Adam Curry has definitely took a toll on his IQ. He just seems to be getting dumber by the day.
He is wrong in almost everything he says.
How you have fallen. - bcamp1973, on 10/07/2009, -2/+5No
- MtheoryX, on 10/07/2009, -3/+6He's a dumbass.
- toleshei, on 10/07/2009, -0/+2Not fans of the Tech Grouch I see...
- JasonCox, on 10/07/2009, -29/+31Dugg for Dvorak.
- Raian, on 10/07/2009, -3/+5At the time he was right... and he wasn't making a valuation of the mouse.
- samcrut, on 10/07/2009, -2/+4I agree with most of that sentence, except for the "smart" bit.
- Andrewe1, on 10/07/2009, -2/+4I agree, one of the few techTV personalities I don't miss...
- Yage2006, on 10/07/2009, -0/+2You lost me at smart
- solistus, on 10/07/2009, -0/+299% of Dvorak's articles are unfounded predictions. As a JOURNALIST he should not publish such crap without an iota of evidence or even a coherent logical reason why he is likely to be correct. If he's not a psychic, he should stop ***** pretending to be one.
He summed up the cable modem's chances of mainstream success as "absolutely zilch" in the mid-90s. You know, right as broadband swept the globe and revolutionised the internet? He's called the iPhone a failure and suggested Apple pull the plug on it as recently as last year.
Although Apple products inspire an active and rarely accurate rumors scene, Dvorak's track record is FAR worse than most random rumor sites. Why anyone would read any of his predictions except to mine for amusingly stupid quotes is beyond me. - solistus, on 10/07/2009, -0/+2Products John Dvorak was absolutely convinced and adamant would turn out to be total, unmitigated failures:
-The mouse
-Broadband internet
-Wikipedia
-Tags/Clouds/Pretty much everything "Web 2.0"
-the iPod
-the iPhone
-the iMac
His list of predictions is equally pathetic. I'm too lazy to do the research but hasn't Dvorak been babbling about an Apple tablet since about 2003? When you keep making different, unfounded predictions that long, you're bound to get some of them right occasionally... Unless, of course, you a John C. Dvorak. - solistus, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1What he's actually saying is a bunch of uninteresting, unoriginal hearsay we've all heard from more credible predictors a million times by now. The only thing worthy of discussion in relation to this article is the fact that John Dvorak is an idiot.
- ddev, on 10/07/2009, -1/+2[citation needed]
- mrBitch, on 10/07/2009, -1/+2Concept video. Vaporware product. Next?
- solistus, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1Yes, they have been building *prototypes*, this is well known. Dvorak keeps saying they're actually about to release one, which has thus far never been true. If you keep predicting the imminent launch of a product for over 6 years, should anyone be impressed if you eventually get it right? Anyone with Google and 2 minutes of time can pull up countless rumor reports claiming some anonymous tipster at Apple or one of its parts providers spilled the beans on an upcoming project. In terms of credibility of information, Dvorak lies somewhere between those unsubstantiated reports and a fanboy rant in a Digg comment. The difference is, when a post on MacOSRumors or a rant on Digg has the research background of about 10 minutes on Google, it doesn't get passed off as professional journalism.
- SpiderTeets, on 10/07/2009, -4/+5psh, MS courier please.
- David513, on 10/07/2009, -4/+5Does Dvorak ever get ANYTHING right?
- kreatre2007, on 10/07/2009, -2/+3This guy is ALWAYS wrong about Apple.
- ddev, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1Actually he is wrong about almost everything. At least he is consistent.
- KrayzieKyd, on 10/09/2009, -0/+1Whoever buries this has not listened to TWiT or his new show, "The Tech Grouch". Seriously, Dvorak is an idiot.
- mrBitch, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1@ solistus, RE: " .. Yes, they have been building *prototypes*, this is well known. Dvorak keeps saying they're actually about to release one .. "
No, Dvorak never said that Apple were about to release anything. FTA :
" .. Speculation concerning the upcoming Apple Tablet computer is running rampant, so I might as well toss in my thoughts on the device .. " - someology, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1He's hilarious, that's why I've always enjoyed reading his articles.
- mrBitch, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1RE: " .. hasn't Dvorak been babbling about an Apple tablet since about 2003?"
That's possibly because Apple has been building tablet prototypes since 2003.
http://daringfireball.net/linked/2009/10/05/nyt-ta ...
" .. a rare on-the-record statement from a former Apple engineer who’d worked on prototypes back to 2003:
“It couldn’t be built. The battery life wasn’t long enough, the graphics performance was not enough to do anything and the components themselves cost more than $500,” said Joshua A. Strickon, a former Apple engineer whose name is on several of the company’s patents for multitouch technology.
And this gem:
Another former Apple executive who was there at the time said the tablets kept getting shelved at Apple because Mr. Jobs, whose incisive critiques are often memorable, asked, in essence, what they were good for besides surfing the Web in the bathroom." - Yage2006, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1I dismiss everything this tinfoil hat wearing crank says out of hand without a second thought.
It will probably be wrong like most everything else he says lately. - Orbital101, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1Mac evangelists are fun to mess with, but this...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAWDYaWAVQQ
...Dvorak seems to be shaping his reader traffic not by saying what he thinks is real or true, but by playing head games. It might get him the desired result, but it's not what I call good op/ed tech writing. - mrBitch, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1RE: " @ stubear... Can you think of any examples where Apple is making up their own standards?"
Buried for fact? - theuniversal, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1badqat:
Perhaps he does enjoy saying things that provoke a reaction from Apple fans. That's not the problem. The problem is that he is supposed to be providing commentary on the tech industry and markets but his opinions - not just with respect to Apple - are 99% ill-informed nonsense. - aserer511, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1I'll say it once and I'll say it again
