- andrewtayloruk, on 10/24/2007, -3/+42This argument about OS X is just a service pack is so far removed from the truth it's riddiculous; I hate to fan the fan-boy flames, but, as a Mac user for the last 4 years Windows and OS X are in a different league. Although we're getting a new OS X every couple of years, we're getting built-in features that are massive improvements. Don't just look at OS X getting a new dock or whatever rubbish, look at things like in Leopard we're getting ground-up 64bit support, when looking at Tiger and Panther look at innovations in Core Audio and Core Video. The fact is the under-pinnings of OS X are rock solid (one of the big 4 in certified Unix), they're not going to ground-up re-write that every 18 months, there's no need, it just needs improving. They're charging $100 every 18 months, and, they're bringing us refinement of the base product and brand-new features that are making improvements. People are comparing Vista and Leopard when they should comparing Tiger with Vista, we've had half of the new Vista tech since 2005, the improvements we're getting in Leopard aren't even on MS's radar and they're charging $++ for it.
I'm more than willing to drop $100 on 64bit support, time machine, quick look, improved spotlight and the general tweaking of the overall OS. The other items are just nice to have. Vista Ultimate is $400 and what does it give me that I haven't already had for the last two years with Tiger? - Dumbledorito, on 10/24/2007, -0/+29It's just a step on the way to being known as "P. Jobby."
- stalefries, on 10/24/2007, -0/+26Very little of what you said made any sense at all.
- ThankTheCheese, on 10/24/2007, -1/+19Sorry if I'm being slow, but what exactly does "...will anchor a schedule of product upgrades..." mean?
- meatmcguffin, on 10/23/2007, -0/+17Usually when i see messages like this, they come with ads for viagra at the bottom
- philz, on 10/23/2007, -0/+15Yeah, get a job so you can browse digg on company time like the rest of us!
- Spuy767, on 10/23/2007, -4/+16I can't tell if that's sarcasm, or mental retardation manifested. If it's sarcasm, it's not very good, if you're retarded, I apologize.
- enicholas, on 10/24/2007, -0/+12I'm using Leopard now. It feels like a bigger upgrade than XP -> Vista did. Comparing OS X releases to Windows service packs is ridiculous.
- jdpalite, on 10/24/2007, -0/+11Dude, I love Macs, and your comments make me want to hurl.
- enicholas, on 10/23/2007, -1/+10I'm a Mac fan currently running Leopard, and I have to say I was leaning towards the sarcasm / mentally retarded explanation too.
"The translucent menus are sure to make me want to spend more time with my Macbook Pro." Ummmm... seriously? Of all the new features in Leopard, you call out translucent menus? Especially considering that Tiger has translucent menus as well (though less stylish)? - streak, on 10/23/2007, -0/+9Microsoft invested in Apple as just one small part of a peaceful settlement to Apple's patent infringement suit.
- Zippo, on 10/24/2007, -0/+7For a price reference, The Canadian & American price for Leopard: $129.
Windows Vista Home Basic Upgrade: $129 (a little cheaper in the US)
Windows Vista Ultimate: $499 Canadian.
Mac users are getting the full, "ultimate" version of Mac OS X; while for the same price, a Windows user would be stuck with the most stripped-down version of Vista... and it's only an upgrade version. No wonder most people pirate Windows. - knightboat, on 10/23/2007, -0/+7That isn't as much of an insult as you think it is.
- Quix, on 10/24/2007, -0/+7Ah, the old "OS X pay-for updates are no more than Windows Service Packs" horsecrap. Honestly, Mac users are constantly bashed for smugness, but it's the ignorance of Windows users that drives me nuts.
Being both a user of Windows and OS X, I can tell you that XP SP2 was in no way equivalent to any of the OS X updates I've paid for.
Can we please put this stupid talking point to rest once and for all? - bradallen18, on 10/24/2007, -7/+14The NYTimes page was already on digg yesterday.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/23/2007, -0/+7The last email that got through my junk mail filter was kinda weird. It's almost emo poetry -

Certainly they've been working over the past few releases on making development easier for the platform with the advent of technologies like Cocoa Bindings and Core Data so I take this to say that they've achieved what they wanted in that respect and that they are now ready to build on it. What they are planning to build on it is anyone's guess, mind...
- clackerd, on 10/24/2007, -0/+6i imagine telling your parents you're gay because you own a mac is about as hard as telling your parents you're a 35 year old, WoW-playing virgin who spends 6 hours a day on your alienware PC.
- AronT, on 10/24/2007, -6/+11If you digg this comment down without supplying any opposing facts you're a close-minded sissy.
- streak, on 10/23/2007, -0/+5It's bad when a company says the next OS release will contain certain technologies and will be released at a certain date and then pulls those technologies and still releases years late. Using your own description, Vista isn't more than a really really strong Service Pack.
- nanboya, on 10/23/2007, -1/+6I actually wouldn't mind a 2 year gap; it'd give developers a chance to catch up and some time to let the really good apps come to the surface.
- Ramble, on 10/24/2007, -2/+7Agreed. Translucent menus stop world hunger.
- kotatsu, on 10/23/2007, -2/+7Is that the best insult you could come up with?
- EmoSLWarrior, on 10/25/2007, -0/+5This is just the sort of comment that takes a community like Digg and pulls it down a few notches on the intellect scale. I'm not gay, and even if I was, what exactly is wrong with being homosexual? What factual evidence can you provide that indicates that being gay is an undesirable state of being? The AIDS argument doesn't hold up because it doesn't just affect gay people. The religious argument doesn't hold any water either (that it's "sinful") because there are many religions on the planet and if any one of them is correct, then at least 90% of the rest of the world who doesn't belong to any of those religions is going to perish in some horrible fate. My short point here is that being gay is not a bad thing. So making this connection between being an Apple user and being gay serves no purpose. It's pretty much like saying, "The hardest thing about owning a Mac, is telling your parents you're going to become a lawyer". How negative is that? Oh wait...
- AronT, on 10/23/2007, -0/+5I'd rather pay $100 every 12-18 months for a solid list of new features then $400 every 5-6 years for eye candy
- muchocheeto, on 10/23/2007, -2/+7Are 12 year olds allowed here?
- MtheoryX, on 10/24/2007, -0/+5I would HIGHLY recommend NOT using your student loans to pay for technology.
Only use a loan for something that will appreciate in value, like an education or a home.
Do NOT use it to finance luxury liabilities like cars, electronics, etc if you can avoid it.
Those loans will need paid back at some point, and unless you're using your technology to generate revenue, you'll find at the end of the day that you're paying way more for technology you're no longer even using.
Just my two small copper disc-shaped objects of little value. - antitab, on 10/24/2007, -1/+6"We have to let go of this notion that for Apple to win, Microsoft has to lose."
- Steve Jobs, Macworld 1997 - MacEnvy, on 10/24/2007, -0/+5Almost exactly 30 months. 4/29/05 - 10/26/07.
- Kelmon, on 10/23/2007, -2/+6You are a buffoon, sir. Are you honestly trying to tell us that the incremental update to the Windows GUI in Vista was worth 7-years? Of course it's bad that Windows releases their products slower - the Windows community should be feeling royally stiffed for Vista. 7-years of waiting and that's all you got? You have every right to expect a new OS in about half that time but this time they needed to re-write a lot of the OS for whatever reason. Since when did you need to wait that period of time in the past? Please, don't justify Microsoft for that - you are their consumer and have been treated badly.
I'll just note that new OS releases from Apple are definitely not Service Packs as Windows users understand them. True, it's not a complete rebuild of the OS but then that's almost never necessary anyway. There's always a lot of new developer tools and libraries as well as the changes to the OS itself and complementing applications. I seem to recall that all XP SP2 delivered was a Firewall & Security Centre, some pop-up blocking and a load of bug fixes. Leopard will introduce (I have no doubt) a whole new range of bugs that will be eliminated over the point updates (e.g. 10.5.1) that are Mac-version of Service Packs. I will note that those things tend to turn up about once every 3-months. 2.5 years of Tiger takes us up to 10.4.11 (when they release that final update) so that's 11 Service Packs. Go figure... - muchocheeto, on 10/23/2007, -0/+4Yes, read the whole thing again... 5 times.. then ask your English teacher and see if you can understand the "message".
- MacParrot, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4What streak said is correct. MS bought 150 million in non-voting shares (sold later at a great profit for MS). Apple didn't NEED the money as they still had plenty in the bank (but it was draining fast). What Apple needed and got was a comitment from Microsoft to update Office for the Mac and exchange technology for 5 years. That was much more important than a paltry 150 million.
- Spuy767, on 10/23/2007, -1/+5Schizophrenic much?
- stellarceltic, on 10/24/2007, -1/+5I work 30 hours a week, and go to school for another 18. After putting away car insurance and rent, I'm not left with much. Forgive me.
- knightboat, on 10/23/2007, -0/+4RTFA
- Spuy767, on 10/23/2007, -1/+5Did you ever get those e-mails that advertised viagra and whatnot but had passages from the hobbit in them to bybass filters? It was amazing.
- Quix, on 10/24/2007, -1/+5Ah, one more lame Apple-basher chestnut. Does anyone really believe that $150 million from Microsoft "saved" Apple? Give me a break. $150 million was chump change to Apple even at that time, hardly enough to "save" the company. Yet the trolls keep making this point again and again.
Are the Winbots really this gullible? - brnews, on 10/23/2007, -1/+5was that the only thing worth mentioning that was said through the whole interview?!
- MtheoryX, on 10/23/2007, -0/+4I'm even wearing an Apple hat....and I'm about to take it off and puke into it.
- vault, on 10/23/2007, -1/+5whaaaaaat
- MtheoryX, on 10/24/2007, -0/+4Tabbed terminal. That's my number one feature. Geeky? Probably. Sad? Yeah, a little. Useful? Hell yes.
- drlha, on 10/23/2007, -0/+4No. You must consume more!
- MtheoryX, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3While you're not wrong, this is how blogging works, no?
All you have to do, apparently, is add a little bit of commentary to a dugg article, and all of the sudden, your article is also digg-worthy. - streak, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3If I heard, remember and understand(!) last night's quarterly report correctly, Apple predicts $100M in Leopard sales for the current (December) quarter and charged $22M in Leopard development expenses last quarter. So it's conceivable the total development costs from all quarters will be more than covered by upgrade fees. The OS will also help drive new Mac purchases, including purchases by Windows switchers.
Now, how much did Vista cost to develop? The number I've heard bandied about is $10B. - CheeseburgerBro, on 10/23/2007, -1/+4I am an adult male hetersexual who uses Macs, and I heartily endorse this quip.
(I also drive a butter-yellow sub-compact car, but let's not quibble. I'm straight, I tell you, straight!) - davidlow, on 10/24/2007, -2/+5Really? Tiger was supposed to "anchor a schedule of product upgrades that may continue as long as a decade" ?
- Kelmon, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3"Did" or "will do"? Only "did" isn't a difficult target to beat...
- streak, on 10/24/2007, -0/+3Yes, really. Check your Jobs keynotes. A time period wasn't given, but he said Tiger would lay the foundation for all future development of Mac OS X. And that's the gist of what he has said now about Leopard.
- muchocheeto, on 10/23/2007, -1/+4Actually I don't get that 12 - 18 month gap. It was true before Tiger... but wasn't the gap between Tiger and Leopard more like 30 months???
