Jobs: App Store launching with 500 iPhone apps, 25% free
engadget.com — Steve Jobs said that the Apple App Store will launch with "more than 500" applications Thursday night for the iPhone and iPod touch. Of these, 25% will be free and 90% will cost $9.99 or less.

- 801NvizioN, on 07/10/2008, -20/+9Hmm free via iTunes, or free via jailbreaking..
- kryptics, on 07/10/2008, -5/+3I'm not a genius at math - but 25% plus 90% = 115%?
- schoate09, on 07/10/2008, -1/+7To clear it up, this is what they mean:
90% $9.99 or less including 25% free
10% > $9.99 - forumz, on 07/10/2008, -2/+3I think they mean 25% of the total
amount of the apps are free, and 90% OF the 75% (that aren't free) will be 9.99 or less. - pavelmah, on 07/10/2008, -1/+10Your assessment of not being a genius is correct!
Well Done.

- Unksean, on 07/10/2008, -14/+133How many of these apps will enable copy/paste?
- superkendall, on 07/10/2008, -24/+5The funny thing is, these comments just show how ignorant you are about how the iPhone actually works. In real use, most times you would need cut & paste the iPhone already provides a function to copy the data for you.
- obsolite, on 07/10/2008, -1/+31Like when someone emails me a password or a login name? Or when someone sends me an MMS via email because I can't accept MMS through my phone?
I agree the "copy/paste" comments are trite, but don't pretend like you wouldn't get a lot of use out of the function. That's just a lie. - dyranios2, on 07/10/2008, -1/+7sorry i dont want my hand held I want something open I can do whenever,
I can't forward SMS's so let me copy and paste at least, same with notes/email to SMS,
Information from the internet, etc - Nossie, on 07/10/2008, -7/+6I smell *****
there are LOTS of good reasons to add c/p ... a few listed above.
I'm thinking the reason apple have not provided it is because they dont want to suggest you might have a purpose for more than 1 thing open at a time - which they apparently cant do.
And I say that because if they could do it... they'd at least give us the option! - oh wait, its apple nvm
and before anyone thinks I'm a hater, or whatever... I have one ordered direct from O2

- Unksean, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Umm no it doesn't. I'm actually replying to your genius insult on my 16g right now.
- obsolite, on 07/10/2008, -1/+31Like when someone emails me a password or a login name? Or when someone sends me an MMS via email because I can't accept MMS through my phone?
- Daniel591992, on 07/10/2008, -1/+23None. Apps can't run in the background.
- BrendanSheehan, on 07/10/2008, -0/+20Except Apple's of course.
- damnyooneek, on 07/10/2008, -6/+1i'm 100% someone will figure out an app to do this. considering how many people mention about this the maker would bank when it comes out
- jabberwolf, on 07/10/2008, -1/+2And at $9.99, most of these applications are very simple. Nice pictures though, but very very simple.
And the iPhone magic, someone hit it right on the head, 1 application at a time !
- coolingstar9, on 07/10/2008, -0/+0Hope the function can satisfy all of us, worth using it.

- diggymow, on 07/10/2008, -0/+6It will have to be (Well iTunes 7.7 will be at least) because the phone will be out in Australia and New Zealand by then.

- eastmanweb, on 07/10/2008, -2/+8Assuming these apps are generally decent (as dictated by the app approval process), then I must say that I'm impressed with the initial quantity. I wasn't expecting it to start out that high.
- georgemandis, on 07/10/2008, -1/+2I think that approval process was much more random/first-come-first-serve than people realize. I say this only because I'm browsing the app store right now and noticed these gems:
1. A light app that turns your iPhone into a flashlight for free.
2. A light app that turns your iPhone into a flashlight for $.99.
3. A game where you see how long you can keep your finger on the screen.
All in all most of the apps do look interesting though.- Virgule, on 07/11/2008, -1/+1About the flashlight apps.. The free one, "Light" is just that; a full white page with maxed out brightness while the 0.99 one, "Flashlight" offers a variety of colors. Choose the red one to retain your night vision. Clever to search for things in the car without messing up the driver's vision. :D

- iet2004, on 07/10/2008, -2/+9you know...generally speaking....most people tend NOT to click on links that they're not interested in. I'm not sure how your mouse (your brain?) works but....that's just what I think happens on most people's computers. But who am I to say? I can't be everywhere at once.

The iPhone OS is just a toy.

- gubatron2, on 07/10/2008, -2/+5engadget has so many apple related articles, there so much going on, can't imagine how boring it will be tomorrow once it comes out.
- TimFrost, on 07/10/2008, -4/+2Well some apps are already available on itunes, just you need the 2.0 firmware to use them, Apple just decided to tease us by dangling them above us just out of reach and mockingly saying "Neh neh neh neh neh" like a playground bully *sobs*.
- fluidfoundation, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2look down.

- DanteDefiance, on 07/10/2008, -1/+5I posted this as a reply up yonder but:

GET IT!!- fluidfoundation, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Did it, works great. Love the change to password input field (shows the last character you typed unmasked)
- mohrt, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1It's supposed to. iPhone has been doing that for some time now. It's to help you see what you are typing by exposing the last character.
- fluidfoundation, on 07/11/2008, -0/+2Didnt do that for me in 1.1.4
- fluidfoundation, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Did it, works great. Love the change to password input field (shows the last character you typed unmasked)
- xObsoletex, on 07/10/2008, -4/+32"Of these, 25% will be free and 90% will cost $9.99 or less."
I think the that could have been worded better.
At least the article gets it right: "Of these, 25% will be free and 90% (of those for sale) will cost $9.99 or less."- obsolite, on 07/10/2008, -0/+4115% better.
- fluidfoundation, on 07/10/2008, -3/+3"Some free, most not."
I think the 9.99 benchmark for most of these is a bit high, but once there's more competition in the apps the price will go down. I'm surprised at the quality of a lot of the free or .99 apps. - thatspsychotic, on 07/10/2008, -1/+4So according to the article, in total, (.25+(.9*.75)) = 92.5% of all apps will be $9.99 or less (including free). The engineer in me needed to do the math out.
- dawgma, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1deleted to stave off embarrassment.
- homesnatch, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Deletion of bad math = Good Move...
- KJSatz, on 07/10/2008, -0/+5I don't know if you have access to more info than I've seen, but I thought they meant what they said, and 1/4 are free and 9/10 are under $10 (this includes the 1/4 for free).
- thatspsychotic, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1"Of these, 25% will be free and 90% (of those for sale) will cost $9.99 or less." From the article, hence why I put the math there. It's probably actually going to be how you've put it, but it's more fun to find meaningless things to do math for while bored at work.
- freebird09, on 07/10/2008, -0/+0I wonder what the 10% or so apps that cost more than $9.99 will entail that makes them more expensive...
- superkendall, on 07/10/2008, -2/+1Well one of them is a complete anatomical reference. That sucker is only $30, a steal in my estimation given the sheer volume of data contained.

- kryptics, on 07/10/2008, -11/+1I'm not a math genius - but 25% plus 90% = 115%?
- darkened, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3You're clearly not, this has already been explained, that's 90% of the total apps are < $10, and 25% of the total apps are free which would be a portion of the 90% that are < $10.
- sembitch, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2"60% of the time it works every time"...
- dandormix, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1"That doesn't make sense"
- acevoncash, on 07/10/2008, -1/+12it should be even more later. I see small developers writing apps that do the same stuff for much cheaper than the big name apps, if not free. It will push the price of all apps down.
- superkendall, on 07/10/2008, -2/+5Possibly, but the larger developers can always improve the apps they have. It's worth paying more for something that works better.
- wiseasgandalf, on 07/10/2008, -8/+5500 apps, oh yea, how many apps do YOUR phones have, verizon and sprint?
- robEstyles, on 07/10/2008, -4/+21The best app of all the "not on an AT&T network app"
- Chirp08, on 07/10/2008, -4/+5My Verizon phone has 1 app, it lets me receive and send txt messages, receive and make calls. and that's why I bought this PHONE. The reality is that the iPhone is not a phone that can run apps, its a pda can that can make calls. If Apple had thrown all of this at people initially it would have been overwhelming and caused the phone to flop.
- TomFrost, on 07/10/2008, -2/+7You're not the target market for this phone. You're acting like the iPhone is some horrible abomination that tries to do everything AND make calls, and that no one should need that. Have you ever heard of Blackberry, Palm phones, or Windows Mobile? This is just another device out of many that allows people to converge into a device that handles all mobile electronic needs. And if you don't need your E-mail on the go, then none of these things are for you.
- Qumahlin, on 07/11/2008, -0/+3"If Apple had thrown all of this at people initially it would have been overwhelming and caused the phone to flop. "
I'm no apple fanboy, but Apple's name is built around taking the complex and making it simple. Using the features on the iphone really require no instructions at all.
- MikeSobe, on 07/10/2008, -4/+7I have this one, it's called VZ Navigator. It gives me turn by turn driving or walking directions along with looking up local gas stations and restaurants. How's your GPS doing?
- lurkndog, on 07/10/2008, -0/+7If they're Treo smartphones, tens of thousands.
Though, current development is sluggish, and there are some notable holes, like lack of a really good browser. - jabberwolf, on 07/10/2008, -1/+11If its palm or MS Mobile > 10,000 or more.
- woody168, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3with a name like wise "ass" gandalf (as much as he wants to sounded like wise as gandalf) what kind of intelligent question can you really expect him to say? folks, I think we are expecting too much from a retarded kid here........
- JonLatane, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1I have this really cool app for my Sprint Centro that lets me get unlimited EV-DO data and texts, along with 500 minutes (and unlimited nights and weekends starting at 7pm), for $30/month.
How much does that cost on the iPhone 3G again? $70 for slower data speeds, less minutes, limited nights and weekends, and NO texts?
I'll admit to occasionally taking on the mentality of an Apple fanboy, but ***** that.
- M4rx15t, on 07/10/2008, -7/+6Free Open source apps FTW... I am just waiting on the Jailbreak
- Jerk, on 07/10/2008, -2/+6Apps on Installer pale in comparison to many of those in the App Store.
- acevoncash, on 07/10/2008, -1/+10not to mention there is absolutely nothing preventing free open source apps from being in the store..
- freqk, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Wrong. The App Store license breaks any free software license.
- DigDugDigger, on 07/10/2008, -1/+5Hopefully ApolloIM will be in the App store or some jailbreak will enable its use in 2.0. The AIM client, from a interface perspective, looks very 1995... just what you'd expect from the company.

- TheWorm, on 07/10/2008, -0/+13That piano app in the thumbnail is 6 bucks. I think some developers need to rethink their price points.
- quaxon, on 07/10/2008, -1/+7exactly, especially when you can get the same exact thing for free + a dozen or so instrument add ons for it for free via installer.

- LordHelmet, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1*****
- aychamo, on 07/10/2008, -2/+5A lot of these apps are complete *****. And a lot are duplicates. There are a few nice ones, but hte majority of ***** crap.
- superkendall, on 07/10/2008, -4/+3You have to let the market sort things out, remember that before today no-one had any idea what anyone else was working on - I personally expected many Twitter clients, but the number of GTD apps has me a bit surprised. There are a few other categories where the level of duplication is a little surprising as well.
Also remember that in practical terms, developers have had very little time to actually learn to write apps, so the quality at first may be a bit lower but should increase sharply. I think we'll see the App Store round out rather nicely going forward.

- sleepwalkers, on 07/10/2008, -0/+4And that is MMS in what way?
- utnow, on 07/10/2008, -2/+2You send an email of your photo to another person who checks their email on their phone and neither of you gets charged 20cents for the "privilege" of sending an email with a picture in it. Why this is even a issue befuddles me. It's like begging for SMS when you have AIM. One is free data. The other is overpriced fluff.
- Qumahlin, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1You don't understand. Apple is under the impression that MMS is a unneeded protocol and does not want to support it on their phone. The end goal is that pretty soon every phone will have email access and email is a prefered method for sending photos.
SwirlyMMS which is an app that runs on jailbroken iPhones proved that the phone can easily support MMS. Guess what, AT&T killed off the app, they made it so that you can't have the requisite package added to your account and if it is added it gets removed within 48 hours.
