- Jaq524, on 10/12/2007, -8/+48I thought it was pretty much common knowledge that the new 13" Macbook replaced the Powerbook.

- chriszma666, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25"A gaming laptop from Apple? And what will you play, Wow?"
Umm... actually any game that runs on Mac, Windows, or Linux considering Intel macs run every x86 operating system. So...pretty much any computer game. - thinkdifferent, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Do you mean like the Mac Mini, or iMac? Those are already out. If you mean the pro workstation machines.... Apple has said that will happen within the calendar year 2006.
- HackWithRamzi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1313.3 isn't that much bigger and it's widescreen. I'm glad they came out with it, but I do wish they'd kept a 12 around for those that liked it.
- JK1150, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Besides "over the phone," is there another source? I'm sure if you called Apple a month ago they would have denied claims that they would be building a 13" MacBook.
- sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Wow this whole story is stupid. The people on tech support, who supposedly confirmed the non existence of this laptop, will always tell you a product will not come out, even if it will. Also, only Apple employees that are much higher than tech support reps will know about a product before the day before the product is released. (source= another digg story)
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Exactly my thoughts, just because he called Apple and asked them doesn't mean it's official. They could working on something, who knows.
I can't wait till the Intel "PowerMac" comes out. Are they waiting for Conroe to release? That chip looks really promising, but we'll see. - HackWithRamzi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8WWDC in August is probably when the Intel PowerMac replacement will come out. They've pused WWDC to August 7-11, instead of its usual date in July.
- MikeSD34, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11An older version of the "notebook" computer, that you could put on your lap.
These days they don't exist anymore because the processors run so hot.
That's not entirely true, but it's where the industry seems to be heading. - shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Steve Jobs stated at MacWorld SF that the PowerPC to Intel transition is expected to be complete by the end of 2007.
The MacBook, MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini are all based on the Intel chip.
The G5 workstation, Xserve and eMac lines are the only ones left that are still based on PowerPC architecture. - Hoffer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I had an 867 MHz 12" PowerBook. I just replaced it with a 2.0 GHz white MacBook. It's definitely bigger than my old 12". I like the bigger screen. I always wished the 12" screen was larger, but I did love how small the overall size was.
I'm really happy with my new MacBook. It's obviously A LOT faster. The screen is so bright and colorful. I also think that the overall build feels much better than the G4 iBooks. - PhantomaZero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Didn't Apple say they weren't working on the Video iPod as well? Cmon folks, just cause Apple says something doesn't mean its set in stone.
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6umm, actually, I wouldn't be suprised if Apple is bluffing. They may do a UMPC, or a tablet. I wouldn't be suprised if they did. It would be like, the Macbook ProTouch or somethin, idk.
- cwoolf34, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6My buddy just got a MB and was surprised to discover the aluminum that is hidden underneath the painted keys. He called me to tell me he already scratched his MB when his GF set her keys on his keyboard. So at the heart, the Black MB is the 12" MBP.
- DaMacGamer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6the only thing you are missing out on by having a MacBook, and not a 12" MacBook pro is the dedicated graphics (MacBooks are using the Intel integrated graphics). other than that, there really is no point in having a 12 MacBook Pro.
- garyploski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Official?! Apple hasn't released anything "official" about this at all. Sure, there are reasons to believe that there will not be another MB but people are digging this as "official"?
Wait for the official word from APPLE not yourtech.typepad.com/. Come on peeps. Sheesh. - galfridus73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@shiftt: The eMac will never be updated as Apple dropped it from the consumer side last year. You can still buy them for education, but only through institutional purchase (not as an individual purchase on an educational discount).
My guess is that Apple will just push would-be eMac buyers to buy Mac minis with a relatively cheap display. - darthmdh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've never heard so many girls complain about an extra inch or three...
- MikhoohkiM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4the shiny screen help me see whats on the screen outside, unlike power 12" powerbook where the screen looks just black outside
I wish there would be some type of a smaller macbook pro, and a single core $700 macbook isn't a bad idea if you ask me - oneshare325, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2006/may/16macbook.html

It was official when It was announced!!
Together with the 15-and 17-inch MacBook Pros, the new MacBook completes Apple’s Intel-based portables lineup and replaces both the iBook and the 12-inch PowerBook. - fastfood15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thay wouldnt tell you on the phone anyway dumbass. If they announced every new product underdevelopment whenever anyone called and asked then there would be no use for engadget or digg to spread the word.
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It will happen when they have a machine with at least two 64bit intel chips that can address 16GB of memory. Otherwise, it will be a step backwards from the current top of the line Powermac.
On TwiT Kevin Rose talked about OS X having the ability for 8 cores in the kernel. Think of the possibilities... - tallguy14, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I can't beleive this made the home page
- waken66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5except if you prefer the silver metallic look, or the new keyboard gets on your nerves.

It was official when It was announced!! - jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Even if they did have it what would be the difference beside the exterior casing. I mean, the MB is practically the same as MBP besides the little things such as the casing, illuminated keyboard, and vram. While a 12" or smaller widescreen vision would be nice, maybe it really isn't necessary anymore. But, just because they say they aren't making one, doesn't mean they most definitely won't make one later on. Maybe they want to have the element of surprise.
- gamabunta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You can't seriously believe this guy. It's his word without any backing other than "I called and they said...."
It isn't an official press release from Apple so until we hear something official from Cupertino this is pretty much a rumor.
reported as inaccurate - stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah no kidding. It's pretty small as is. I'll take the core duo power/extra features for another inch.
- falcon707, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They also said there isn't going to be a video iPod. Look at us now. =)
- TheReport, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"cheap display"
Cheap Display in the mac World is pushing it, the cheapest they have is the 20 inch for 700 dollars...with that cash you might as well buy another Mac Mini and then buy a cheap ass 200 dollar widescreen from bestbuy assuming that other macs come with the DVI adapter, I know my PowerMac G5 did so... - jsg7, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6The PowerMac replacement will probably have to wait until power apps like Photoshop have been released as Universal apps. They'd be way too slow for professionals to run them through Rosetta. Then need to be Intel native.
My guess is around Macworld early next year, but perhaps they will come out in time for Christmas if OS X 10.5 is ready by then... - jeffburg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2good riddence
i had trouble even accepting the 12" powerbook as a powerbook. it was more of a metal ibook. it only had one ram slot and built in memory.... not very powerbookish - Terc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not that I think there will be a 12" Mac notebook, but since when did Apple actually count as a reliable source on what they would release in the future?
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not so sure a tech support guy would know best. Remember the denials of the iPod video?
I think there might be *something* along the lines of a real 12" Powerbook replacement, as Apple has yet to unveil a laptop that uses the Core Solo or ULV. I find it unlikely that the Mac Mini is the only unit to use the Core Solo. The rumored "MacBook Thin" might just be the real thing... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7It was a joke... a commentary on the current situation with the MacBook overheating issues. Just warning you before more literal thinkers begin to reply.
- cwoolf34, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sort of old news, I saw some photos of the new Apple Store and saw the banners that said "Meet the Family". I guess 2 days is considered old on digg at least. It does suck for those who wanted a dedicated graphics card in a smaller form factor. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple quietly updated the MacBook page with a build-to-order option of a 128 MB dedicated graphics card for the Black MB.
But seriously, what happened to Apple releasing a sub $1000 notebook? How hard is it to come out with a $699 notebook to please the casual teens and less demanding consumers? - inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Straight lies.
Just because SOME person from applecare told him on the phone he didn't think there were any 12, or 13.3" macbooks coming out... doesn't make it true.
APPLE IS BUILDING A KICKASS DEVICE to replace the 12 powerbook. wait till you see it. It, like a hybrid UMPC (like those intel things) and hybrid apple device. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How is this "official?" Guy calls Apple tech support, talks to worker drone, is told there's no 12" coming. Apple employees themselves admit that they find out about products at the same time as the public, no earlier.
Unbelieveable that a vague comment on a blog like this would be considered Digg-worthy.
Reported=Innacurate - Gryffydd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmm, remember what Steve Jobs said about a video iPod right before they released one? What Apple says they're going to do has no bearing on what they will do. 1 minute they'll be bashing Intel processors, the next using them. One minute saying a video iPod is a terrible idea, the next making them.
Me, I'm still waiting for OpenDoc... - tijer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The MacBook is actually a smaller notebook - measuring volume - than the previous iBook 12"
- ToadX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I really wanted to get a 12 or 13" MacBook or MacBook Pro. However, if they don't release a 12" or 13" MacBookPro or at least make the graphics card in the 13" MacBook better (or an upgrade option at least), then I guess I won't be buying one.
This is kind of sad if this finishes their laptop lineup. They should offer Mac users more of a choice if they want a certain size. There's not much of a reason for them to make a distinction between MacBook and MacBook Pro. They could've just called them all MacBooks and had 3 separate sizes in the lineup. - gamabunta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ooo
I stand corrected. - thehouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1unofficial quote: "it will actually be a 12.1" macbook pro"
I agree with those who are calling for the 13.3" mbp - and even thought I don't use it I'd like it to have the 800 firewire, thank you. - blakholephysics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Most of your gamers aren't going to move to Apple for anything unless installing games on a Mac becomes as easy as putting the disk in and clicking install. (most) gamers wouldn't bother paying for the license for windows on a computer that is already as expensive as a gaming platform for windows.
Build a (Mac hardware + Windows license combo) who's price is less than or equal to a (PC with Windows preinstalled) and you will get Mac converts for the purpose of gaming. - signal15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple HAS to release a 13.3" MBP. Everyone is yelling about it. I work in the network security industry, and many network engineers and security engineers I work with and know love their 12" powerbooks. They are professional looking and had decent specs at the time they were released. Corporate customers who do a lot of travel love the small size of the 12", they would sell a ton of 13.3" MBP's if they ever released them. The 15" is just too big for those of us who are on a plane every week toting around a laptop and a ton of other equipment. My laptop bag currently weighs in at 47 pounds, and it's packed with cables and all sorts of equipment. Adding a laptop that's 30% larger than my 12" is very inconvenient.
That said, I ordered up a black MB. The integrated graphics on it isn't horrible, but it's not what I want either. My 12" powerbook is aging, and it's basically running out of steam for what I'm doing. I'm constantly working on 4 different projects concurrently, and therefore have a ton of apps open, including VPC. My memory is maxed out, and almost always running at the limit, and there just isn't enough processing power in the trusty old 12" to do what I need to do. I'm hoping my new MB can get by just fine, but I'd really like to see a 13.3" MBP.
Another thing to note is that many manufacturers are using much higher resolutions in smaller screens, something that Apple has tried to stay away from. If they came out with a 13.3" with 1440x900 resolution, I'd buy one in a heartbeat. People who don't want their text that small can run non-native 1280x800. I wish they would give those of us who want higher res the ability to do so. - navvvv, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2life of an apple fan...
