- cyberdork, on 07/16/2008, -9/+82Just the Apple 'Remote' app is worth $10.
- AEdgett77, on 07/16/2008, -16/+86Or you could just torrent it and its free
http://thepiratebay.org/tor/4287476/iPod_Touch_2.0 ... - waterdrop, on 07/16/2008, -6/+56Even Microsoft's Zune 2.0 software update was free. Apple's iPod 2.0 update should be free too.
- dullnation, on 07/16/2008, -11/+57No.
http://thepiratebay.org/tor/4288985/iPod_2.0_IPSF - Fluvant, on 02/27/2009, -9/+51This update succeeds very well at "decreasing your battery life."
- casspa, on 07/16/2008, -13/+47I bought it, I think it was very much worth it.
- digjam, on 07/16/2008, -7/+36ARE YOU KIDDING ME? SUPPORT APPLE? SERIOUSLY?
- Branchex, on 07/16/2008, -3/+30You think with the money Apple can make from the App Store they would give the update for free.
- notyourbroom, on 07/16/2008, -16/+41I was fully prepared to pay my upgrade fee and do everything legally, but Apple ***** up the launch so badly that I ended up getting the pirated version over a torrent, since I simply could not buy it from the iTunes store. The time I wasted trying to get the iTunes store to work on launch day was worth more than $10, so I consider that debt to Apple paid. It was either "forgive the time I wasted, wait yet another extra day, and pay $10" or "get the update right away and pay $0", and that choice was easy to make.
I know I'm not the only one person who went through that decision-making process, and I know Apple lost money because of it. But if they do want my actual cash next time, they'll need to make the product available for legal purchase on time rather than forcing me to the only working alternative, piracy. - majortom1981, on 07/16/2008, -2/+25Turn off the automatic push option. Wehter you have it setup for exchange or not it still tries to get data all the time. Turn the option off and your battery life will increase.
- Rolamoto, on 07/16/2008, -2/+24Agreed, I paid $300 for my iPod, I shouldn't have to turn around and pay $30 in upgrade fees
- bigmrpig, on 07/16/2008, -3/+24I don't have a touch, and I'm sure the update is plenty worth $10, but since when do companies charge for firmware updates?
- MewTwo, on 07/16/2008, -2/+21I paid as much for the thing as someone pays for a gaming console, and gamers get tons of cool ***** updated without having to pay. Apple is *****.
NOT TO MENTION the fact that I paid $20 in January. (AND it's something that people who bought the touch after January got without charge... such *****! I don't think they are giving away 2.0 like that though).
I love my iPod, I wanted the update enough to pay $10... So I feel taken advantage of, and now I am really bitter towards the company. That's worth it for those greedy bastards. - LennyX, on 07/16/2008, -4/+21It's like having a new iPod. It's a much better paid update than the last one - and cheaper. I think the reduced battery life is to do with the push data. The WiFi doesn't seem to turn off when it's in sleep now.
- rodrigo74, on 07/16/2008, -5/+20I just keep waiting for a 64GB Touch..it can't be that much longer now, can it?
- l800LEMMINGS, on 07/16/2008, -0/+14but i'm glad it isn't
- brycehebert, on 05/03/2009, -0/+14Wow, you're quite the optimist, aren't ya?
- toastgodsupreme, on 07/16/2008, -1/+15Or they could not gimp their products from the start, wait for the community to make their own apps, then finally bundle Apple versions of those apps into updates they charge for.
I'm not anti-Apple. I'm just anti-douchebaggery. It's not like the ipod touch was a cheap purchase. - inotocracy, on 07/16/2008, -2/+15You could just download the firmware, and hold ALT (might be shift, can't recall correctly) when you click restore and select this one:
http://thepiratebay.org/tor/4287908/iPod1_1_2.0_5A ... - schneid4323, on 07/16/2008, -0/+13Yeah.. Well... I got it for free by doing this new thing, a search on google. 4th Link was a charm.
- inactive, on 07/16/2008, -5/+17An update costs money? What the *****? ***** Apple.
- ap44, on 07/16/2008, -3/+15I paid for it for my touch. I didn't have the original update (that including mail, weather, stocks, maps) and they wanted 19.99 for it. So I just jailbroke mine and used them haha. But now for $10, I gave in a paid it. Don't really mind it really and for $10, it isn't that bad at all!
- Drewboy64, on 07/16/2008, -2/+12Yes, I love the update. Yes I did steal it. No Apple should not charge $10 for this update. For starters, don't give me this "iPhone owners pay monthly" *****. Because, in fact, it is *****. Microsoft gave a free 2.0 update to their users. All the game console users get free updates that add a lot more functionality then Apple could dream of. All computer owners get free updates no matter how large or small. Apple has done a fantastic job of running their dick up their customers ass holes. The people who dished out $20 for the January update feel betrayed because all that and more is included for $10, which if they want they'll have to buy it all over again. Also, they're restricting the amount of people who will use their store by making the only people who can use it buy the update. Also worth mentioning, ***** you to all the fanboys who says to me "support Apple and just pay the little $10" because that's $10 I could be spending on something entirely different instead of filling the large corporate wallets.
p.s. Sorry for my excessive profanity. - KJSatz, on 07/16/2008, -0/+10See the $10 you spent to get 2.0 could be mentally assigned to the Remote app...does that make sense?
- LittleDas, on 07/16/2008, -3/+13Since people started bending over for apple.
- mannymix03, on 07/16/2008, -7/+17For some reason I don't buy that at all
- KaJuN4, on 07/16/2008, -0/+10The best part was that people with old Zunes could update their firmware. I love my Zune 80!
- Rolamoto, on 07/16/2008, -0/+9It is Shift on the PC and Option on Mac
- aresef, on 07/16/2008, -3/+11I bought it, and it works wonderfully. Apps are great. Remote saves me the trouble of actually buying an Apple Remote (and it works via wi-fi, not infrared, so woot). And now I want an iPhone...must resist...
- conversekid, on 07/16/2008, -1/+9Don't pay, you have the internet. Duh.
- ohemsted, on 07/16/2008, -0/+8Aren't 64gb flash chips expensive, all of the high capacity iPods (60gb+) are HDD based.
- meghalc, on 07/16/2008, -0/+8I am glad someone had the balls to post it! Thank you sir.
- inactive, on 07/16/2008, -3/+11That's what she said!
- DirtyBrowncoat, on 07/16/2008, -6/+14I have to admit, the iPod Touch is probably the greatest touch device I've ever experienced. But I'd still rather have nothing than have to be nickel-and-dimed just because I don't want to be held hostage by AT&T for 2 years. Not to mention the apps are all DRM'd, which is fun if your iPod Touch/iPhone breaks or your computer dies. Hope you guys are backing up your receipt files......
Apple is 10 times the evil Microsoft is, it's just everyone's too busy enjoying their iToys to realize it. - lvlln, on 07/16/2008, -1/+8As other companies like Sony and MS have established for their portable and other consumer devices, it is perfectly legal to add significant functionality to a product long after it has been sold and the accounting has been closed. Furthermore, lawyers and accountants have consistently come out to state that Apple's so-called reasoning is pure BS. Here's just one example:
http://www.macnn.com/articles/07/01/19/apples.8021 ... - Daniel591992, on 07/16/2008, -0/+7Except for the fact that Apple calls it a firmware update....
- yertthedigger, on 07/16/2008, -0/+7Zune 2 software was free.
- DillonHinson, on 07/16/2008, -1/+8My only issue with everything isn't with the firmware at all, it's the iPod touch itself. I know Apple wants the iPhone to be different than the Touch and they don't want the two to have the exact same features. But if the Touch actually had something similar to 3G in it, instead of just wi-fi, so many more apps on the Touch would be useful. Apple can keep the phone capabilities exclusive to the iPhone, but please let us get on the internet whenever we want and where ever we are, instead of pulling over to Starbucks just to get to use the maps on the Touch! Wi-fi isn't as widespread, at least in my area, as many people think. And sometimes they cost money to use. But with the iPhone, you can get on the internet anywhere for free, mostly. Say you need to find something, a business or whatever, while you're driving. You cant use the new Yellow Pages app on the touch. What's the point? And if I am at home, obviously I'm going to use my desktop computer instead.
I love this update, but in reality it is not practical because of the touch's limited access to the internet. - gordigor, on 07/16/2008, -4/+11That's like an Apple tax. How else are you going to get a new Ipud every year. Oh wait, that's why I bought a zune.
- inactive, on 07/16/2008, -4/+11So let me get this straight you pay $10.00 so you can get an app store, to pay for more apps, and download a few free ones. I wouldn't pay it, it should be free , you shouldn't be punished because you got the touch and not an iphone. I would download the firmware via torrent, or just keep my regular touch jailbroken
- oliversan, on 07/16/2008, -1/+8Not really when you can just download it from the Pirate Bay. Or Apple's own servers...
- FleetAdmiral, on 07/16/2008, -0/+6I cant see getting this till there is a simple jailbreak method for it...The reasoning is simple, there are apps that Jailbreak has that the iTunes Store does not, and programs that are on a jailbroken iPhone/iTouch that are free that Apple wants you to pay for (See Sketches, the etch-a-sketch like program). Once I can have the iTunes Store Applications AND Jailbroken ones, I'll be happy and will upgrade, otherwise, why bother? I'll just wait till I can have both!!!
- Quizboy, on 07/16/2008, -1/+7You shouldn't have to pay a company to fix its own software.
- alexforcefive, on 07/16/2008, -0/+6Seriously. Who pays for firmware updates?
- ghawg, on 07/16/2008, -0/+6The iPod touch is Apple's way of giving us a "gateway drug" to the iPhone. Apple wants everyone on an iPhone, and they are leveraging their market share in mp3 players by introducing a crippled iPhone as an "iPod".
The above comment just illustrates how the iPod touch works well as a teaser. All current iPod touch user will be iPhone users in a year or two. Just watch. - meghalc, on 07/16/2008, -3/+8You think like a typical apple Fanboy! People like you are the reason apple gets away charging people $10 for a freakin software update!!! Get a life.
- Emachine, on 07/16/2008, -1/+6iTax
- JasonCox, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5It's worth it but I'm really hoping for 2.1 soon, the performance of 2.0 is just horrible.
- markross, on 07/16/2008, -1/+6I could see the rationale behind the January upgrade I guess, since you were actually getting new apps, even though I disagreed with the prcie. But paying $10 to ALLOW you to BUY apps seems lame. (Yes, I know the update has other stuff... like the Scientific Calculator, exchange support, etc, and I know there are free apps, but...)
- speakafreaka, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5PS3 xmb updates are free.. bringing new apps.
I dont want to update.. im happy with my jailbroken 1.1.4 but ***** itunes tells me everytime i plug it in that i need to update. I cant choose not to install the"new "APPLICATION" if i just want the bug fixes they included, so their business model is ass.
If they really didnt want to charge customers and this SOX ***** is true.. why not charge 1c for it? Apple said they dont want to charge the customer, but they have to, so ill choose not to pay for it. -
