- Juaquin, on 10/15/2008, -56/+315No.
- JesseJ, on 10/15/2008, -66/+252No it's not.
It doesn't have a firewire port, so there is no way to connect my HD videocamera or my professional audio equipment. - spdorsey, on 10/15/2008, -9/+101Apple practically INVENTED video on the desktop for the common user. And they did the best job of integrating DV into the OS to use as an editing format.
Now they release the MacBook - the laptop most often purchased by the college students that make youTube videos - without a Firewire port?
WTF? - abynion08, on 10/15/2008, -15/+101Sure, if you're gonna give the $2000 to buy one.
- PIPBoy2000, on 10/15/2008, -33/+112THE ANSWER IS STILL NO!
- MtheoryX, on 10/15/2008, -8/+81Lack of even a single FW 400 port, compared to the MacBook model I already have, is quite disturbing.
- freesf, on 10/15/2008, -25/+98NO Intel® Core™2 Quad Processors

NO, there are million of people that love Windows, have an huge investment of software and hardware, and can care less about the limiting Mac OS... so NO it's NOT time to switch to Apple laptop.
Hope I answered your question, it was very easy - elister, on 10/15/2008, -5/+58Its not a good idea to switch to ANYTHING, yet alone a computer.
Switch to a Hybrid Car, can you afford it? No? THEN DONT SWITCH!
Switch to a HDTV, can you afford it? No? THEN DONT SWITCH!
Switch from drip coffee to Starbucks? Can you afford it? No? THEN DONT SWITCH!
This is a very dumb article. If you have money, do whatever the heck you want to do. If you dont have money, dont burden yourself with more debt. Its as simple as that. - NSResponder, on 10/15/2008, -22/+75You have pro audio gear, and you're complaining about the entry-level, consumer machine?
-jcr - monkeysama, on 10/15/2008, -20/+71Unless you buy the Pro.
- Dagreenman, on 10/15/2008, -15/+61my dell has bluray, hdmi, a better prosseser, gpu, and firewire. I spent 1000. It's not Macbook time.
Still want OS Leopard. - Elranzer, on 10/15/2008, -1/+38Apple giveth... Apple taketh away
- Urkel, on 10/15/2008, -2/+36Not to be a jerk, but have any of you guys even seen a PC notebook in the last 5 years? You'd be surprised to see what stuff comes standard in the cheapie notebooks, and what features are packed into the midrange systems (All specs found in sub $1300 notebooks)
- Blu-Ray
- GPS (Garmin)
- 4GB Memory Standard
- 320GB HDD standard
- FireWire (Yes, windows users do make home movies too)
- Express Slot
- 3G cards
People slam PC notebooks a lot, but the build quality and feature packages are actually very impressive. - MaxMWood, on 10/15/2008, -28/+57No because just like the iPhone they will realise they've ***** themselves over by selling it at a price which is too high. So the next update/model will probably be sold at a considerably lower price. That's my prediction anyway..

- klowngoblin, on 10/15/2008, -2/+29apple is like bose

- dsplat, on 10/15/2008, -15/+41I'm a PC!
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -3/+28Unless you're a gamer. Or on a tight budget.
- commentbot, on 10/15/2008, -24/+49I didn't see anything compelling in the article. I prefer purchasing a high-end PC laptop such as a nice full-featured VAIO :)
- chrisc3, on 10/15/2008, -12/+36No firewire was a big ***** imo
- fatsobob, on 10/15/2008, -9/+30Macbooks are very solid computers, I just am not fond of the price tag that is slapped on it. The software isn't so much my concern because I am likely to install some other OS on it or experiment for a while for fun.
If Apple wants my business and many others like me, they need to offer better low cost options as well as the expensive ones. - Solkre, on 10/15/2008, -4/+23Since when is a $1,300 laptop substandard?
- inactive, on 10/15/2008, -10/+29you again? didn't we go over this?
- homercles337, on 10/15/2008, -3/+20The stupid is strong with this one.
- MtheoryX, on 10/15/2008, -4/+21You're an idiot.
- tim620, on 10/15/2008, -11/+28I'm guessing if you are doing professional video and audio work, you would be more likely to go with the Macbook Pro which does have firewire.
- jwdav, on 10/15/2008, -1/+18FireWire can be daisy chained, and every FW drive I've ever seen has two ports.
If you never "got" the advantages of FireWire, or just want to connect external HD's you're not going to miss it. Advantages over USB include:
Target Disk Mode on Macs
Bus Power - FW - Up to 30V/45W vs USB 5V/500mA
Peer to Peer Connections (no host or CPU required)
Multiple Host on a bus support
TCP/IP Networking support
Distance FW800 = 100 Meters USB = 5 Meters
No Drivers Required (config ROM built in) aka Plug n Play
Remote Control of devices like cameras
CableTV Box Support - 3Den, on 10/15/2008, -2/+19Find a new hobby?
- Ryan2845, on 10/15/2008, -3/+20Didn't catch on with Macs maybe, but Dells are still dockable. Thats what my office has, dell laptops that everyone docks when they get to work.
- serif69, on 10/15/2008, -0/+16Somewhere else to quit bitching about every available OS?
- drstock, on 10/15/2008, -30/+46My sexual orientation prevents me from buying a Mac.
- Elranzer, on 10/15/2008, -2/+17Taxes were lower under Clinton, and the economy was way better as a whole. Don't fool yourself.
- irishjays, on 10/15/2008, -9/+24Glossy screen only = 50% less people saying yes.
- Elranzer, on 10/15/2008, -0/+15^^ Anyway who uses iMovie
- KSUdesigner, on 10/15/2008, -1/+15You do realize that there's no FireWire anything (400 or 800) on the new MacBook right?
- sublimemm, on 10/15/2008, -0/+14No!
- isunktheship, on 10/15/2008, -2/+15that firewire port is apparantly worth about a grand then eh?
- divinediva, on 10/15/2008, -12/+24Apple actually sold dock able notebooks--the Power Book Duos--in the mid-late 90's: insert your notebook into a docking station, and boom, your notebook becomes a desktop. A clever idea, but I don't think it caught on, which might explain Apple's hesitancy to jump back in with a dock able notebook.
- jwdav, on 10/15/2008, -0/+12Forgot the difference in latency and isochronous mode, which is kind of critical for AV work:
Firewire allows two operating modes. One is asynchronous, like USB which suffers from latency and bus contention and collisions.
The other is isochronous mode, and it lets a device carve out a certain dedicated amount of bandwidth that other devices can’t touch. It gets a certain number of time slices each second all its own. The advantages for audio should be obvious: that stream of data can just keep on flowing, and as long as there isn’t more bandwidth demand than the wire can handle, nothing will interfere with it. No collisions, no glitches.
From a practical perspective, this also makes it safer to send a lot more audio via Firewire. That’s why most of the multichannel interfaces (18 channels, 24 channels, etc.) are Firewire devices, and USB devices usually just send a two-channel stereo signal. - RMcaluma, on 10/15/2008, -2/+13probably more
- spdorsey, on 10/15/2008, -6/+17Honestly - I didn't think the iPhone was worth $300 until I bought one. Now I think its worth more than that. I use it a LOT, and not just for games and pron.
- smergs, on 10/15/2008, -1/+12But what if you are just wanting to edit home videos and burn them to DVD's? You should be able to use a regular old Macbook for that and not have to shell out the extra money for a MBP.
- Kazbaeden, on 10/15/2008, -0/+11Minimalist aluminum and glass may make you hard, but I couldn't care less. That's not to say I don't appreciate good design, just I define it differently from you. Thankfully my definition of good design doesn't come with a $1000 premium.
- Palaceguard, on 10/15/2008, -0/+11Absolutely correct. People who have firewire camcorders won't be able to use iLife or any app that uses camcorder input
- magus_melchior, on 10/15/2008, -0/+11The lack of an ExpressCard slot also kills off that possible expansion option (ExpressCard FireWire interface)
- isunktheship, on 10/15/2008, -9/+20entry level consumer machine? you realize at that price you can get a high-end PC laptop?
at the same time, firewire isn't expensive, so even if you are using amateur equipment, it's more than likely to use that port. WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW NSR? - inactive, on 10/15/2008, -4/+15thank you for further proving that typical mac users are delusional *****.
>"You really need to own a mac to appreciate it"
That sounds so retarded and pretentious. I know what OS X is and what its made of (basically proprietary hacked up BSD) sitting on top of underpowered, overpriced hardware. I do not need to own a mac to understand any of this. - sublimemm, on 10/15/2008, -2/+12That's the same argument Scientology uses.
