- Olle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What I would like to know is how much ad-money they get per _estimated_ viewer of a particular show.
In other words. What is a viewer worth for an hour long show? 5 - 10 cent? (5 million viewers, $1M ad-money. I really have no clue. Just making this up but it sounds somewhat reasonable).
Also, how much money do they get when I download en episode of something on iTunes after all other vultures get their share? Probably at least 50% ($1).
So, this highly inaccurate argument means that each downloaded episode makes them 10 times the money than what they make if one person watches the show.
Now, if more than one person watches the purchased show then the economy changes accordingly, of course. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Office has some of the best comedic acting on television, right up there with Arrested Development and Curb Your Enthusiasm. What's especially enchanting are the reactions to the camera (they're "allowed" to break the "fourth wall" with blissful will as they're "on camera") and non-verbal eye rolls, gestures between actors in the background, and so on.
- NGC6656, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jim reminds me of Kevin Rose, does anyone else get that impression? The best episode ever was the basketball ep.
- srwilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Quick! Fox needs put Arrested Development up on iTunes. It is a similar style of comedy but better and just happens to be the funniest show on TV. If they could just get those ratings up.
Fingers crossed.... - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We need seinfeld on iTMS
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The one guy who said it is:
Frederick Huntsberry, president of NBCU Television Distribution
That sounds pretty official-like, no? - rhino_rampant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think we all can agree...this show was rather hilarious long before iTunes put it up.... Just watch the first season!
- SparQy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They should try this on Arrested Development -- if Fox would only pull their heads out of their collective asses.
- greekgoat91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why'd that guy jump off the boat? If he'd stayed and listened he'd be motivated, and not wet.
- TheVetos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From Sexual Harassment. S1
Michal: "Well folks, evidently cannot tell the hilarious jokes anymore.
Jim: "Does that include 'Thats what she said'?"
Michal: "Yes"
Jim: Wow, that is really hard...... Can you really go all day? Well al i can say was it was a wonderfull and amazing experience
Michal: THATS WHAT SHE SAID HA HA HA
(I know its not word for word) - pron*, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm with a few others on here in that I prefer the UK version, not that I dislike the US version or that it is not hilarious, just that the unsettling pauses and silences is what really made the UK series for me and the US version just seems a little sped up in that respect. Either way great show....
and you should all checkout The Newsroom from CBC, http://www.cbc.ca/newsroom/, which was on the air pre-any version of The Office and is hilarious. Ken Finkleman, much like Ricky Gervais, is a genius. - lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That show is the motha-fashizzle bomb!
- pyrolyte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i bought an episode and i dont have a tv, so i watched it.
- Stonekeeper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From the UK Version:
Tim: "So what you're telling me is that you can do a man from behind without him knowing?" - tblazrdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jeff Zucker is also talking about it. And he IS official. Look around very briefly to find that.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't have a TV, but I'd be willing to pay $50 a season (or so) if I could watch one or two of the shows I miss from when I had regular access to a TV. What iTunes needs is more TV shows.
As to the debate here, both the UK and the US version of The Office make me cringe too much. Not at all what I consider to be entertainment, but to each his or her own. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One of the greatest bits in television history, from the BBC version: the wanking claw
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0scrubs is better but i stil like the office
- TheTap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The show rocks. The tension between Jim and Pam is something not seen since Sam and Diane on Cheers.
Michael is a hilarious boss. The filming breaks where the office workers look right into the camera and shrug or sound off is so refreshing. No one else does this.
Dwight is like so many people I really know (hint: he plays Dungeons and Dragons).
This is the only TV show I make sure I do not miss each week. - anamanaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I started out a big fan of the US version which compelled me to download the UK version on bittorrent. UK version is hands down the funniest show I've ever seen. Ricky Gervais was by the far the funniest tv actor I've ever seen (he's also exec producer on US version of the Office). Kind of ruined me on the american version, though I'm still a fan.
- mgoddard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe its from the Golden Globe award he just won?
- jmacdonagh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did anyone even think that the ratings boost might have been because NBC just moved it to Thursday?
- tfaz1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The UK Office probably was a better show overall, but it shouldn't take away from how funny the US version is. It is heads and tails above any other show out there. Besides Arrested Development, what would you rather watch? My Wife and Kids??
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's a very funny show...this and Scrubs are my two favorite (continuing) sitcoms...
- hiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Being in the UK, I obviously prefer the original version but I do like the US version a lot. I'm glad they didn't just do the same thing in American accents as that would have been dreadful and some of the characters (such as Dwight) are superb and could only be from the US.
That and Scrubs are the only American comedys I've ever found funny and they're both currently showing, thank goodness for Bittirrent or we'd have to wait another year to see the latest series over here - redneckcannibal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I tried to download the American version via torrents and ended up with the British version. Couln't have been happier. I am constantly disappointed every week when I tune into NBC. Being an American, I would have to agree that this is MASSIVELY dumbed down compared to the British version. Don't stop rockin' David Brent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Dinger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think you have to see the British version to enjoy the American version. Both are made for a particular audience and are hilarious at doing so..
About TV downloads... I am not sure why Fox is holding it's breath, but from a company that wants to cancel Arrested Development, they deserve to be left in the dust... - phoenixdig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Things is ratings are going to become a bit weird now that this downloading from iTunes is going on....
Ratings generally are used to determine how much to charge for advertising but if the majority of people are downloading the show via iTunes where there are zero ads that sorta makes it harder for broadcasters to use ratings as a key for how much to charge for adverts..
But I suppose regardless of where a show is being watched the more people hear about it the more it might be watched on broadcast TV hence more expensive ads.
Just a thought. - Brecourt_Manor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0kevin is in love with the receptionist. i think she is hot too...
- StudlyDego73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The Office is one of the best shows on TV now, and it's the only sitcom I watch regularly. And being from Scranton, PA, I like the local references in the show. Although having Tim Meadows play a Lackawanna County official really strained the suspension of disbelief."
Couldn't agree with you more. From Scranton myself and I love all the inside references. Ever notice some of the SWB Red Barons stuff Jim or Dwight(I can't remember which) has on their desk? - ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gervais & UK Office, FTW.
- LabRat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just a few of my favorites...
From the Basketball game episode:
Oscar (the hispanic guy): I can play, if you need any help.
Michael: I will use your talents come baseball season, my friend. Or if we ever decide to box.
From the diversity training episode:
Michael: You'll notice, I didn't have anybody being Arab. I thought that would be too explosive, uh, no pun intended. But I just thought, "too soon" for Arabs, maybe next year. You know, the ball's in their court.
and of course:
Dwight: The purse girl hits everything on my checklist: creamy skin, straight teeth, curly hair, amazing breasts. Not for me... for my children. The Schrutes produce very thirsty babies. - molotov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No. Not me. Not Dwight. - Dwight (when Michael's trying to fire someone, anyone)
I'll save you Michael! - Dwight (Latest episode)
I burned my foot badly, in a Forman Grill. - Michael (Latest episode)
And those were the ones I recalled from memory... god it's an amazing show. lol - staticcart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Office is one of the best shows on TV now, and it's the only sitcom I watch regularly. And being from Scranton, PA, I like the local references in the show. Although having Tim Meadows play a Lackawanna County official really strained the suspension of disbelief.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jkfan -- I understand what you're saying but when someone from NBC gets quoted in the press then *that's* official even if the guy is completely wrong and doesn't know what he's talking about.
About paying $50 to watch a season -- people pay more all the time to buy DVD box sets far after the originals have aired! - dolby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0By the way I am a assistant sensei, not assistant to the sensei, lol
- rustyrobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0itunes is the major reason i started watching it. such a sweet show.
uscfan, i think Pam is hot. Kevin Rose said on diggnation that he thought pam was hot too - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@jkfan87
i must be SERIOUSLY on drugs cause i've already purchased every single episode of The Office from iTMS. - dolby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We need all show on iTunes. What about the daily show and colbert report? I can see how the office's ratings when up. I bought and episode off iTune about a month ago then I got hooked.
- whalesalad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is it just me, or does anyone else think Pam is really hot despite her office look, hehe.
- TheGrizah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love the Office it sucks though that there are so many people I know that don't find it funny. :|
I really do think the laugh track and make or break some shows...and that's sad. - maverick999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No. They moved it to Thursday nights, so now it doesn't run opposite The Amazing Race. That's why the ratings are up...
- vincenzothavise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No, torrents are.
- jnorris441, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Children are saying roflcopter. I weep for the future.
- Blizaine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Office (US) is freakin awesome!!! My favorite show, for sure.
- tbfl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think it is a funny show, but I never watched it till it came on after My Name is Earl...
- lavar78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"It is heads and tails above any other show out there. Besides Arrested Development, what would you rather watch?"
Scrubs. - greekgoat91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I ripped the song "Ryan Started the Fire" from "The Fire" episode, so if anyone wants it they could download it from my podcast (which is on iTunes, Yahoo, Odeo etc.) called G.O.A.T. It's so frickin funny
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder how the UK version would have done on primetime TV in the US.
The Reno 911 scenes that take place when the officers are talking in their cars or in the meeting room, and just the generally pathetic nature of the characters reminds me of the UK office somewhat. - Kold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Although I still think the U.K. version is better, I have to hand it to Steve Carell at the golden globes. He had the best thank you speach. Even the cast of lost was quoting him when they received their award.
