Is Mac OS X Leopard's Spaces An After Thought?
whurley.com — I like spaces save the fact that it appears to be an afterthought. For example: Why can ’t I name my spaces? Is there some reason I can only have an even number of spaces? And most troubling of all, why is it that iChat has to be so damn annoying for those of us using spaces? Today’s video shows exactly what I’m talking about.

- newbill123, on 10/31/2007, -0/+3Is trying out some different options or reading the help an afterthought? I don't mean to sound flippant, but these can be justified or fixed with a bit of experimentation.
* Spaces are numbered because it's part of the shortcut to switch to the space. Replacing those numbers with names would do what exactly? Eliminate your shortcuts? Remind you what windows go in what space? If you're trying to do Applescript magic switching to a named space, set up a variable to hold the space number. Otherwise, I don't get why a name that you're only going to see in the system preferences would be a useful thing to attach to a space.
* The reason you can't have an odd number of spaces is that you haven't tried to get them. Try reducing your spaces to a single row or column. Now add a single space. Viola, an odd number. Of course when you add things to a grid arrangement, you will get an even number (as spaces is set by default). When it's linear though, it can be even or odd. Math is funny that way.
* As for iChat, Spaces is doing what it should do when any app demands your attention by throwing a dialog to the forefront. If that were a Photoshop error dialog saying "Filter failed" you'd want to see it right away. If you don't want iChat messages to interrupt your work right away, try setting them so the messages don't come to the fore whenever received. Suggestion that works for me: choose to view all messages in one window and then minimize that window to the dock. There are other ways to customize just how forceful iChat is about getting your attention; Spaces interrupts you because it's set to be fairly forceful in it's default.- tks18, on 11/03/2007, -0/+0I am having Spaces problems to I think. I have to reset my spaces setting every time I restart my powerbook. Is this the way it is supposed to be?
Leopard is also not booting my LeCie on my computer or my sons. It did the very first time and seemed like it was backing up all day, Then it became a no show.
