- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -3/+69Try Picasa. It's pretty good.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+55iTunes windows exists to sell ipods.
iPhoto wouldn't really sell AppleTV because its main function isnt photo viewing.
Stupid speculation - wonderchemist, on 10/28/2007, -4/+43No, iTunes for Windows exists for the sole purpose of selling iPods to Windows users.
iPhoto for Windows would exist to sell what Apple product? - SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35"Why the hell do I have to install itunes if I want quicktime?"
Actually, you don't. - turpialito, on 10/12/2007, -11/+28@GawtMilk:
Any way you can disagree without insulting someone? I won't even start with the epithets your comment's beginning can earn you. Try being constructive, as opposed to destructive, man. Can't hurt you. - GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -13/+29You're pretty stupid. Notice how Apple makes half the profits of Microsoft with 85% of the market share? There's a lot of money in Hardware. If Apple released a Mac OSX CD, they'd maybe gain 10% of market share, but they wouldn't make the ridiculous amounts of money they make on hardware sales. They'd lose tremendous amounts of money. If they just sold the CDs, people would buy parts off of Newegg and save $200.
- opticsnake, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17I can just see the new Mac ads:
"Hi there, I'm a Mac."
"And I'm a PC."
"So what's up PC? You're looking mighty cool!"
(see's PC wearing nearly identical clothing to Mac but it doesn't fit too well and he still has a pocket protector)
"Yeah, I just got some of your software installed. Now I can do more of the things that you can."
"That's great! So how's it working out for you?"
"Well, the software has some compatability issues and I can't do a whole lot else while it's running but, I'm definitely cooler." (begins tugging at the edge of his blue t-shirt that keeps riding up) - sansri88, on 10/12/2007, -11/+23This would be sweet for people without Vista (Windows Photo Gallery). I'd really like to see iPhoto on XP. It totally makes sense integrating it with Apple TV + iTunes.
- inactive, on 10/28/2007, -2/+14> iCameras?
The difference is that the camera companies have already figured out how to make a really nice digital cameras.
Before the iPod, no one had figured out how to make to make an mp3 player that didn't suck, hence an opportunity for Apple to flex its UI design and HCI expertise. No such opportunity exists for digital cameras.
P.S. applematters.com sucks. - johnpaul191, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15going go get old......?
the company has been around for over 30 years and is just getting stronger and stronger. - johnpaul191, on 10/28/2007, -0/+11Apple STOPPED making cameras 10 years ago. the Apple Quicktake was sold from 1994-1997.
- joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13There will be no iPhoto for windows because:
1) it's not a free app (part of iLife)
2) Picassa is free and it's much better (sorry, but it's true) - Burritoking924, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Oh God, I hope not.
- SillyRabbits, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12@Gawtmilk
Apple profit revenues that are 50% that of Microsoft? Umm can you provide a link to those numbers? I'm seeing 546 million http://www.macnn.com/articles/06/10/18/apple.posts.546m.profit/ compared to 3.5 billion http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/290188_msftearns27.html - SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Picasa is better than iPhoto. I've started using it to archive all the 1000s of pictures we take at work. iPhoto used to be great but now it's loaded down with too many features and crappy effects. I actually think it's one of Apple's least useful Apps... Picasa is light, quick and really powerful, and more importantly really intuitive.
- geoken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"Actually, you don't."
A lot of people think you do because Apple moved the link to install Quicktime seperately off to the side. Many users didn't even know this link existed (which was probably the plan). Check out the quicktime download page circa March 2nd, 2006; http://web.archive.org/web/20060302092237/http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html - cplkai, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15@benitojuarez
It's bundled with iTunes because iTunes has video playback. It'd be ridiculous to get iTunes, then download a music video or something, just to find out you couldn't play it because you don't have Quicktime, and THEN have to go and download Quicktime. - Thorin, on 10/28/2007, -2/+11AppleTVs
Did you even read the article!? - KnightWhoSaysNi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13What would be the point of that?
I use iPhoto on my Mac and Picasa on Windows, and I keep hoping for a Mac version of Picasa.
Picasa blows iPhoto out of the water. - cplkai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@brstilson
Apple doesn't WANT to have to compete in the low-end market. Where's the profit in a $500 boxed computer, when you count into manufacturing yields, support, and other expenses? This is not considering the fact that it also brings the brand down as a whole. I can't count the number of times someone uses "Dell" in a derogatory way, even though higher-end Dell's are just as good as any other brand. Apple doesn't want in that market. - geoken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8" I do however LOVE that I've been modded down when everything else I said was valid."
I didn't digg you down but I'd suspect many people did based on your lack of paragraphs and not any objection they may have had with something you said. - joel8x, on 10/28/2007, -1/+9Apple TV's as well as iPhones.
- PURDooM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The linux port is just an installation of a specialized copy of Wine to run Picassa.
Has anyone tried running Picassa through crossover yet? I might have to give that a shot... - MrSpontaneous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They already have a Linux port, I can't imagine it would be too hard getting that to run under OS X.
- thatsiebguy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7How about Picasa for OSX, screw iPhoto.
- stalky14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I know. When I read the title I thought, "This should be 'Is Google planning Picasa for Mac?'".
This is the one Windows program that out-Apples Apple in terms of UI and functionality. iPhoto is a bumpy ride in comparison. - geoken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The linux port isn't really a linux port. The app simply runs in it's own mini-WINE environment.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Don't worry. They're not going to cannibalise part of their own pool (a very small pool) of potential customers by giving them a reason to choose/stick to Windows!
- ewohwerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Most definitely agreed. I think apple is more likely to team up with google and run picasa libraries to quiet any adobe-friendship worries. Except there aren't many of those-- adobe needs apple, and apple needs adobe-- they both know it (and while there is tooth-grinding) and are not likely to change it soon.
Apple is too likely to start losing market share if windows users can get to apps like iPhoto. Also, it would take a crapload of coding, since iPhoto relies so heavily on underlying Mac OS technology (core graphics, etc.)... not to mention the new tricks iPhoto will definitely have with core animation. I'm pretty sure apple's staff, and shareholders, would look at it as a waste of money when there are already good products out there for the pee-cee enslaved like Picasa.
Why do these things get dugg? I still don't get it why people don't have a B.S. filter on this site... even a slight knowledge of the way apple works shoots this one down in seconds. Jobs would laugh if you asked him. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12@GawtMilk
I agree. On the high end, Apple is very price competitive, but they're still very overpriced on low end Macs as well as Monitors. This is why companies like Dell are kicking Apple's ass in this segment, because Apple almost refuses to believe this segment exists, and we see that will the paltry offering of the Mac Mini. Dollar for power, the Mac Mini is one of the worst buys out there, and it's because Apple (once again) decided that fitting it all in a 6" x 6" x 2.5" enclosure was the most important aspect, form over function. They should have made it larger like the G4 Cube. - NewChar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5No reason to port it to Windows, as there's no money in it. Plus, it doesn't hold a candle to Picasa (hopefully Google will port it over to OS X).
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"It's bundled with iTunes because iTunes has video playback."
Actually, Quicktime does video, audio and can even do picture displays, all of which are used in iTunes. This article however is someone *wishing* Apple would bring iPhoto to Windows. More likely, iPhoto and iTunes will merge into iMedia, which will be a complete media database (as it already is starting to handle pictures and videos and even eBooks). - kubrick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I never have any problems with iPhoto on the Mac, certainly doesn't seem to hog memory. I could see a small value for users who have purchased an Apple TV (who do not have a Mac) in having iPhoto for Windows. It would allow them to share their photos onto their Apple TV.
iPhoto also has integration with flickr and istockphoto (i think) to be able to publish content to those sites directly from iPhoto. - Vtorch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Apple is making a smart move.
Apple needs Windows.
iTunes & iPhoto, obviously together has something to do with iPhone. - brihar73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Memory hog? You must be thinking of Apple's Aperture! Hell, the team in charge of version 1 was replaced because it was so intensive!
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"And then, who knows, maybe Apple will go the whole hog, and port all the iLife apps across."
I recon they'll actually port iChat to Windows before any other iLife app, to allow seemless VoiP integration and functionality between PC and Mac users with iPhone's when Apple adds that VoiP ability in iChat. That would shift even more iPhone's, and again like iTunes the app would be free. - dennisbier, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Is it me or is Apple putting is energy in everything EXCEPT the Leopard??!! http://wetech.blogspot.com/2007/04/phony-leopard.html
- adc89, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"I can only assume Apple developers can't code multi-threaded apps for *****.."
They can on OS X, the Windows development team must just be lazy, - geoken, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"In order for the iPhone to transfer and display photos for Windows there will have to be a iPhoto for Windows. "
Unless Apple decides to use some standard transfer protocols to move data on and off it's device.
.
.
.
Wow, I almost got through that sentence without laughing. - adc89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Look in the preferences... There is an option entitled "Copy files to iPhoto Library folder when adding to library", simply uncheck it.
- johnpaul191, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i think the article really misses the motivations for iTunes on MS Windows.
when iTMS launched, it needed a MS Windows app that supported the Apple DRM. they did not want to use a 3rd party application to work with their DRM. it really might be that simple.
Apple gives Mac users iPhoto free with a new Mac, then sells updates with the iLife bundles. would they sell it to MS Windows users? would any of them buy it? in the Get a Mac ads they often talk about iLife being a great thing about Macs that is not available on MS Windows. - Greyarea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"If they bundle this crap with iTunes as the do Quicktime"
Well that, at least, makes sense - iTunes *requires* Quicktime.
Mind you, I do wish they'd make the Windows version of iTunes a bit less...well, crappy. Not having it quit when you close the window would be good for a start. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3buried as innacurate
- geoken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Yeah welcome to windows, where you can't run applications in the background without cluttering up the place."
Your comment makes no sense. How does running an app in the background create clutter? - greenguy27, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I agree Picasa is a whole lot better than iPhoto. If they want to convert something over to windows then I wish it was Yep. That the PDF software that works like Picasa.
- mntbikeracer1, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8I hope not, and I wouldn't use it. iPhoto is a memory hog on an Apple I can only imagine how crappily it would run on a PC. If they bundle this crap with iTunes as the do Quicktime then I will certainly have a fit. Picassa is the one and only software for this task on a PC and it works wonderfully.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OK then - Apparently not many people share my feelings.
I don't pretend to have any real knowledge of how Apple's finances would work out if they did it.
Just saying - there is a huge untapped customer base of people who own PCs, but want Macs. not for the hardware - for the software.
If you could "switch" without buying a 1000 dollar machine - it would really be helpful. - ross., on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"iPhoto for Windows would exist to sell what Apple product?"
The Apple experience..its just another cog in the wheel that helps to make Joe Consumer consciously or subconsciously realise Apple products [usually] work really well, and are easy to use. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You wouldn't understand geoken, because your OS doesn't let you run programs when all their windows are closed
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@sillyrabbits:
Apple made $1 billion profit in Q1 2007, and MS made $3.5 billion. So yes, the "half the profits" line from GawtMilk was obviously an exaggeration, but the point remains: Apple makes far more money than the haters realize (thanks mainly to the iPod, of course), and most of it is hardware-based. Apple is on an upward climb, while Microsoft remains flatlined. And I agree with GawtMilk's point - offering OS X for generic PCs would be suicide for Apple. Don't forget that a huge chunk of Microsoft's profits come from Office.
