- nickquan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+37just in case it goes down here's a copy and paste:
"I'm an engineer with experience in the LCD industry and after seeing enough photos of the Ipod Touch I feel that I can make a pretty accurate assessment of the "black level" situation. It appears to me that it's a problem with the anti-reflective coating. The good news is this is most likely a temporary situation due to quality control issues.
(Added explanation: The AR coating is essentially a clear layer that prevents light from reflecting off of that surface. What's happening here is the upper glass layer is reflecting light from the LCD screen back down onto the said screen. Without an AR coating you get exactly what you see - shimmering blacks. The problem isn't noticeable with vibrant colors on screen. Rotating the screen will change the way this light is reflected to your eyes and may minimize the problem, but since the LCD was engineered to give best color output when looking straight on, you're left with a losing battle.)
Apple surely rushed the factory on getting these out (Steve was likely already upset enough that they weren't ready for the announcement along with the other units) and the factory, under undoubtedly ridiculous amounts of pressure, started to skimp on this very expensive - and very important - part of the process. Additionally, AR coating issues would also explain why you see "slight changes" from one unit to the next.
It's the last thing anyone wants to hear, but the best thing to do is wait 2 weeks or even a month for the complaints to filter through Apple HQ into the factory where changes will certainly be made.
Good luck all - and to those who got good units congrats!"

- directive0, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20An imperfect or even flawed first gen apple product?
*monocle falls out* By jove! - chronichyjinx, on 10/10/2007, -4/+22a Digg DOES NOT equal how many people clicked on the link!
- anks329, on 10/10/2007, -4/+21"We're sorry, Apple Discussions is temporarily unavailable. We'll be back soon.

- qwertyguy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12I've actually cancelled my order because of this issue... Hope it get fix pretty soon!
- 80hd, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14no, they are freaking out about the negative attention. They have enough bandwidth/capacity to handle digg plus a new product release mob.
- alexmuller, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Works fine for me, but...

- rubyeyes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I knew it China!!! First dog food, then toothpaste, lead paint on toys ... now they are jackin with our iPod touches!
- norbiu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Blocked and reported. Hope they ban your ass.
- phoomp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The problem being that people are more perceptive than Apple thought.

That's a major issue - no questions. - Ingersoll, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4If that's the case then some official word from Apple would be nice. This has been widely covered since Thursday and not a peep out of them. I picked mine up Friday and ended up taking it back yesterday. A pity too since it's pretty nice otherwise.
- MacGeekGuy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It's a coating, just like they put on glasses and laptop monitors. I was going to try to type out an explanation of Anti-Reflective coating, but HowStuffWorks had a far more concise one: "AR is made of a very hard thin film that is layered on the lens. It is made of material that has an index of refraction that is somewhere between air and glass. This causes the intensity of the light reflected from the inner surface and the light reflected from the outer surface of the film to be nearly equal. When applied in a thickness of about a quarter of light's wavelength, the two reflections from each side of the film basically cancel each other out through destructive interference, minimizing the glare you see."
- jole, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7I think this guy is absolutely right, and I do think it's a bit more than just a screen calibration issue.
- alexmuller, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Did you not read the thing.... it's a hardware issue
RTFA - Beakerz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I highly doubt that apple site or any other large company's site such as, can succumb to the digg effect.
- 80hd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The backround might be dark grey. And ironically, when video calls for pure black, the image inverts - resulting in dark grey. On a hypothetical scale of 0-9. asking for 3 gets you 3. Asking for 0 gets you 2
- Theisos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Once again: Apple does not succumb to fan boy zerg rush after a new product release...and they won't succumb to Digg.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4That was worth a whole lot more than two cents.
- opnickc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3The iPod is made in China.
- dagamer34, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I thought you people would have learned from the first-gen MacBook Pro's. Just because it has an Apple logo doesn't mean it's the golden standard. All companies are subject to screwing up the first-run of a product launch. Always wait for revisions of the same product before jumping on the "Early adopter" bandwagon.
- Viral, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Then why does it load when the page was re-opened? That's all it took on my end.
- mangasm, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6Between this, the lack of notes, and the uselessness of the calendar i've canceled my order :/
I can wait til apple gets their heads out of their asses.
They've been slipping up lately (this, plus slanted nano screens, plus 'iphone' mixups still left in the touch...)
What ever happened to apple making products that "they would like to use"? - Enuratique, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2As far as I know, it has nothing to do with scratch prevention as it's underneath the glass - between the glass and LCD screen. Its purpose is to prevent light from outside the iPod getting reflected back to the user, causing the image on screen to be washed out/hard to see. If you have a Motorola RAZR (as I do) you'll quickly see the screen is unusable in daylight. This coating somehow absorbs that outside light, letting the image behind it shine through. The problem as it stands now appears to be that its also reflecting light from the inside back down to the screen, reducing the images clarity/brightness - not its intended design or purpose.
- LaurenceHerbert, on 10/10/2007, -9/+10" We're sorry, Apple Discussions is temporarily unavailable. We'll be back soon. Until then, please visit http://www.apple.com/support "
WTF ? - kriminalintent, on 10/10/2007, -6/+7Things like this get weeded out pretty quick, things like this will keep people from getting one this x-mas. I can bet you they have already realized the problem and are fixing it as we speak. By this time next month the only people are will be effect by it are first and second shipment owners, and those very active in tech. news.
- revjustin2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Oh crap...had I read the rest of the article I would have seen this:
"The Washington Post's first look at the iPod touch describes the issue in more detail:
Unfortunately the 16GB unit I picked up at the San Francisco Apple store has a display problem that makes many dark scenes almost unwatchable. Video looks reversed out in dark areas, creating a very distracting negative effect.
The issue does not appear to affect every iPod touch, as at least one user has posted photos of an unaffected iPod touch."
Now that does suck. My bad. - frederoil, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Do you people believe everything you read on the internet? Just because someone says they are an expert, that means they automatically are?
- Soulhuntre, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2All they had to do was take a good product, leave out the phone chip and ship it for the rest of us. No, they build a second rate unit to try and pull as much $$$ as they could out of anyone who didn't want to pony up for the iPhone. Not only did they cripple the software but the screen seems second rate, they took out the camera and they messed up even the QC.
The iPhone software was an insult enough (no Exchange? no copy and paste?) but this is just crazy. - nathanstl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I have the same issue with my iphone. Maybe not that extreme, but I just watch akon's video on youtube and definitely same problem.
- dagamer34, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Never buy initial runs of a first-gen product? Is that so hard to understand?
- cgehring, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The link works every time if you remove the "&tstart=0" from the end of it.
- ploke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It likely isn't the same screen. The resolution is slightly different and so are the dimensions. Look under 'tech specs" for the touch and the iphone.
http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/specs.html
http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html - MacGeekGuy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3ROTFL - digg this guy down all you want, but 1st gen Apple products can be a bit iffy, depending on the product. Second gen is usually the way to go... although, I'm saying this as the very happy owner of one of the good iPod touch units. I have no issues with my display whatsoever... but if I were sane, I probably would've waited for - not necessarily the next generation - but the revised version which invariably shows up a month or two later.
- TimFrost, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Sorry for sounding completely retarded, but I don't really understand what the AR layer is. Is it a layer in the screen or something to do with that protective layer that comes on the screen to prevent scratches?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2like they give a ***** about some nerdy news site
- mossrockss, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Back up. He says he thinks it's a lack of anti-reflective coating. If true, hopefully that means the display is indeed the same high quality of the iPhone, it's just the first-run units are experiencing this QA problem.
- FoxOrian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Yup. All of us here is the LCD problems from Apple. Okay, just makin' sure.
- Yankoka13, on 12/10/2007, -0/+0this is a good site that tells you how to get a touch for free...
http://get-afreeipodtouch.blogspot.com/ - stupidgenius, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0holy crap thats a bad one. the blacks on mine just seem to have a slight blue tint to them that can be eliminated by changing the angle. if apple realizes and fixes this issue i'll still take mine back to the store to see if they'll swap it out for me.
- madmaxmedia, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1The original author is simply theorizing on why some (but not all) Touch screens have this problem- it's a possible technical explanation, not a 'blame Apple' or 'blame the supplier' post.
I am returning my Touch to Best Buy because it has this problem, but not all Touch's seem to be affected. I really doubt anyone would knowingly use LCD screens like this in any product, because I haven't seen anything like this. The LCD screen itself is outputting pretty good color, but the negative glare renders the screen unwatchable. Tilting the screen removes the glare, but then the overall IQ suffers (as happens with off-axis viewing on all LCD's). Right now people are just trying to diagnose the problem, and await Apple's response. - toetagger, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1or what
- CraigJ, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1neither.
- arjie, on 10/10/2007, -5/+5Must be running OS X Server. But seriously, the number of people who clicked the link is probably really large, then they didn't digg it for whatever their reasons.
- akf2000, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2I had to re-read the title to see what you meant, that's how far my brain has shifted from a normal person's perspective to a Digger's.
- cave, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Already have a 1st gen shuffle, What I want is something for my weekly video podcasts (ie Diggnation). Any recommendations?
- hourog, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Looks like a bad day with Photoshop contrast editing.
