- theghoul, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20"We were fortunate enough to get the two brothers behind the application"
Why bring race into it? - trylleklovn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12They are Mac programmers.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Pixelmator development was done by only 2 guys, took only 9 months, and already competes with Photoshop Elements. I'd say that's an awsome achievement.
- skidooer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Who is seriously going to discount this program forever just because it didn't support tablets at one point in it's lifecycle? I agree that this may delay a "ton" of sales, but most people who are interested in this product will reevaluate it when it does get tablet support.
- dagamer34, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Rome wasn't built in a day.
- antitab, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Dugg because non-native English speakers are cute :)
- xportz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10You guys are being ridiculous. Their idea was to create an image editing app for the common person. I don't see why tablet support is necessary right out of the gate in that case -- the vast majority of casual Mac users/digital camera folk don't have a tablet and likely don't even know what a tablet is. Longer term, to compete with PS, sure it's going to be critical, but give them a break. This app is slick.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7For a good house you build the foundation first. Walls come later.
- swrostmore, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I don't think you realize how expensive Photoshop is, you filthy pirate.
- skim1420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7After participating in the beta program, I was *really* surprised to be informed of the formal release. The product just didn't seem anywhere near ready, in stability or functionality.
I sort of had the feeling these guys didn't really have a good feel for the market / user base. After reading this interview I'm sure of it. I love my PS Elements and use it every time. Some of their comments I'm not feeling -
"The truth is that Mac OS X was built exclusively for image-editing applications."
"We are very happy when someone calls Pixelmator a "Delicious Generation" app... of course, unless that means pretty but not useful."
"Our task is to build not the average image editor but the best image editor for Mac OS X. Because we are on track to do that, it will definitely give Photoshop a run for its money"
"I would be very surprised to see anyone who uses Mac for more than two years in any way interested in Photoshop Elements." - eatrains, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Because Pixelmator is based on core Mac OS X-only technologies.
- stevex0r, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Mac can has applicaxions
- Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The release version is quite stable. Yes, Beta 1 was awful. That's why it was a BETA. Beta in the sense of what a beta actually means, not this Google-style perpetual "just in case something goes wrong, you can't blame us" beta.
- Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Above anything else, probably that it's GPU-accelerated, so it runs hella fast compared to CS3 on the models with decent video cards. And of course, that it's $60 for the full program, not $600 for the most basic version.
Although with no support yet for the Pen tool and everything that goes with it (paths, basic vectors, etc), it just doesn't feel quite complete - and I don't even use the Pen tool that often. There's just something that feels somewhat incomplete about it. - picsectionpleez, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Better to have Killer Mac Apps then lists of 100 Must Have Tools for PCs
- fishbert, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6They say in the forums on their site that Wacom tablet support will be coming shortly after the initial release.
I agree, it would've been nice to have now... but it is coming soon. - flashback99, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Ok, I'll be the first to admit I have never heard of this "most anticipated killer Mac app"
- subliminalurge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5"Tall order if they are going against PS2-3 and beyond."
It will never be a viable competitor to Photoshop. Think about it.
"That pic was obviously Pixelmatored" just doesn't have the right ring to it. - Kappa00, on 10/14/2007, -0/+5Pixelmator doesn't even include a tool to draw straight lines. One has to use a workaround to do it.
http://www.pixelmator.com/support/viewtopic.php?t= ... - antitab, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I think Pixelmator is fantastic, and the second it gets vectors and layer styles will be the second I (gladly) ditch Photoshop for good, but I've heard a lot of bad blood coming from the Mac community, particularly developers. Pixelmator is seen largely as a gimmick, with its inappropriate use of the HUD window style, months of hype and vapor, and bugginess. In particular, the 1.0 release is still very buggy for me personally. I love the GPU-acceleration, which is lightning fast even on my GMA950, the filter selection, which beats Photoshop easily IMO, and I actually think the HUD style is rather slick. I just wish these guys were getting more credit for their excellent work.
- fishbert, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4@swrostmore
You haven't bought a new house, have you?
Lots in new developments are almost always sold before the house is done. (often times before it's even started) - KnightWhoSaysNi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It doesn't look anything like Photoshop.
- Dog_Paddle, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Those guys don't look like programmers
:/ - KnightWhoSaysNi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Looks like a good replacement for Photoshop Elements. Especially since Adobe hasn't released the latest version for the Mac and the older one isn't a universal binary.
- swrostmore, on 10/10/2007, -9/+13No Wacom support = useless
- KAMiKAZOW, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4No. ImageMagick is mainly used for image format conversation. It's also used for a few image manipulation functions, but they don't go into detail which functions. Most image manipulation is done though Core Image -- a Mac-only technology.
- magicaltrevor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I don't think there are any 3rd party apps for Media Access Controls. This is a Mac program.
- fishbert, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5They're not going after PS2-3 so much as PS Elements.
Pixelmator is not intended to be a full-featured, professional image manipulation program; it's targeted more at the casual user. - KnightWhoSaysNi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3At more than 10 times the price, Photoshop better offer more features.
- kris33, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3And none of them works great anyway.
- antitab, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"There is no benefit to end user if your proprietary product uses open source libs."
You mean other than years of community-tested code going into your app? Yes, no benefit whatsoever. - insomniac8400, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Too funny.
- OrangeTide, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5It didn't seem that great. It was more like Photoshop with fewer features and a pretty UI. I was hoping for something more like Deluxe Paint or something old school, but brought into the modern age of pixel pushing. (Pixen is like that, but it's lacking many features and is super buggy)
Why is there all this hype on digg about Pixelmator? - blackjack75, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"Above anything else, probably that it's GPU-accelerated, so it runs hella fast compared to CS3 on the models with decent video cards."
That's a a big misunderstanding about Core Image. There's nothing magic. It works very fast as long as your GPU can handle the whole image in real time. Then it becomes catastrophic. Seriously, open a 7 mpixel image in any of the CoreImage apps out there and you'll understand why PhotoShop's speed won't be beaten easily. - thunderpaw, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Same reason that Photoshop looks so much like MS Paint which looks so much like Deluxe Paint which looks so much like Mac Paint.
- fishbert, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3quote things in context
"The user whom we had in mind once we started to work on Pixelmator was a 1) Mac OS X fan, 2) one who does not need as many features for image editing as Big Brother has, 3) one who needs more image-editing tools than iPhoto has, and 4) one who is a pro-user who wants to do some basic editing fast without having to wait for some big app to start."
And don't forget their tagline: "Image editing for the rest of us." - acidblue, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Like anyone buys linux software.
- swrostmore, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's not about competing with Photoshop - Its about, what makes it a better option that downloading open source GimpShop for free? The answer is, a pretty UI and some cpu shenanigans. Plus they buy diggs, so ***** them.
Also, from their PR copy: "You can paint with Pixelmator as you would traditionally" - ilgaz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2and remember, this is apple section, guy is probably using OS X which itself is a mix of open source and propitiatory tools/frameworks working together.
- johnbell, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I bought my copy of pixelmator last week. i LOVE it. sure, its missing a few features im used to in photoshop... but its so f-ing fast....
- ChunkerMunker, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3For the ZILLIONTH ***** TIME.....this is "NOT" supposed to be a PS replacement or competitor.
Its an image editor that's for an avg user, NOT a pro.
As far as Gimp is concerned, It may be better in some areas, but it doesn't have a Mac feel to it. And that seems trivial to some, but for many it means a world of difference.
If I'm gonna be using an app for either a short amount of time or long time, I'd want it to be smooth to operate and easy to look at.
User interface is extremely underrated by many, it makes tasks seem less like work and a hassle.
This is a great app for novice image editors such as myself, that wanna do "quick" and simple stuff. - Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5A killer MAC app would be som kind of NIC driver wrapper that buffer overflows when connecting to some specially-configured network devices, right?
- louiedog, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4No, but hopefully they had some walls up when people started moving in.
- antitab, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's called the "HUD" or "Head-Up Display" window style, and it debuted(?) in iLife '06, long before the Expression suite.
- thunderpaw, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3...and significantly cheaper than Photoshop.
- srslyfkd, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Pixelmator is pretty on the surface but surprisingly lacking in capability. It's also really, really buggy. You know there's something wrong when the first beta can't even draw a vertical gradient without crashing.
This one needs another year in the lab. Kudos to these guys for playing the Apple fanboyism card*, though. They're raking it in now.
* I'm an Apple enthusiast, and I hate fanboys. - justinroman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Pros use Photoshop because of its pre-press support. That's long been the major failing of GIMP. Until pre-press support is decent, Pixelmator will just be a cute toy.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I thought the beta was quite buggy & slow, but thought I'd give it another try & just downloaded the demo today - it is now very fast, and I haven't hit any of the bugs I saw in the beta.
Still not quite ready to dump photoshop cs, but it beats elements. - Ireland, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2They are a front for two googley-eyes geeks! :P :)
