- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -1/+29Quicksilver is my favorite Mac app. It has become integrated into my daily use of OS X. I love Quicksilver.
- jmnz, on 12/07/2007, -0/+27No you won't get dugg down because fanboys don't agree with you - you'll get dugg down because you're argument is *****
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -1/+224 times more huh? Go compare prices and see for yourself. My Mac Pro isn't white, and is a serious workstation at a competitive price, unlike whatever you're sitting in front of, jacking off to gay porn in your mom's basement.
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -0/+18Quicksilver is so much more than an app launcher.
- antitab, on 12/07/2007, -0/+18"they have zero comparative advantage over pcs anymore"
They run OS X (properly). That's as big an advantage as any. - Slvgx, on 12/07/2007, -0/+15Quicksilver is by far and away the best Mac application out there for me. If I use another Mac without QS it feels broken.
I really hope the QS dev guy(s) get some help because it will be a grim day if Quicksilver bites the dust. - bcamp1973, on 12/07/2007, -0/+14being a douche-bag doesn't help your digg status much either...but something tells me you've seen the effects before...
- tabledesk, on 12/07/2007, -2/+16No. If this was a link to a story about the clothing brand I would've thought it was about an application launcher, though.
- chrislee149, on 12/07/2007, -0/+14The fact that you just throw off Macs as "better and video editing or something" shows that you really have little knowledge of the operating system and instead just listen to misconceptions. I wouldn't mind you saying that PC's are superior if you provided a valid argument (and actually posted it in a relevant article), but you don't even try to do that.
- FyreFiend, on 12/07/2007, -0/+13Just as fast but not nearly as useful. QS is more than just a launcher
- antitab, on 12/07/2007, -0/+11"PCs are vastly superior because of the fact that more people use them."
Oh of course, I forgot that quality is defined by popularity. - Peavey, on 12/07/2007, -2/+13He works for the google as a developer.
I've heard they pay pretty well... - statiktv, on 12/07/2007, -1/+10this is such a horrible business decision. this guy has created one of the most intuitive ways to operate a computer i have, or anyone, has ever seen. since switching to QS, i never touch my trackpad on my MBP when accessing files...and this guy wants to nix it? is this guy depressed or something? in the middle of a divorce? or does he just not realize just what a gold mine (both financially and technologically) he is sitting on?
- HunterTV, on 12/07/2007, -0/+9meh troll
- bitspace, on 12/07/2007, -0/+7The current stable release is done, he isn't working on it any more other than to address bugs. The unstable branch that he's been working on isn't released, and he says it probably won't ever be. While it's open source now, and that is good in some respects, I think the overall quality of it has a good chance of decreasing with people other than Nick working on it.
- spyseetuna, on 12/07/2007, -0/+6Quicksilver is one of my favourite apps.
- The instant gratification of quickly launching an app without reaching over to the mouse is great.
- It's also good for taking text and throwing it to another app for processing. "project planning meeting 12/18 7pmi" and i've created an event in ical, for example. I like not having to switch to iCal and then clicking here and there to enter data.
- You can also set up hotkey triggers for Applescripts or other system actions. I set a trigger for automatically zooming or tiling windows, for example.
Thing is, Leopard's Spotlight is now snappy enough that it can do just as well for app launching. It'll do document searches just as well, if not a little better. You can set up Quicksilver to do about the same, but then it's something else you have to set up, whereas Spotlight will already just do it. In this case, I prefer Apple's opt-out approach (specifying what not to search) versus Quicksilver's opt-in (specifying what to search). (With Time Machine, however, I'd rather opt-in and tell it what I want backed up.)
@statiktv: I think the issue is the same that the PathFinder devs have -- the OS app works just well enough that most Mac users won't feel the need to want more. In my case, now that Finder has a Path bar, I'm less inclined to want PathFinder, as much as I like their efforts. Same goes for Quicksilver -- now that Spotlight is as snappy as I found QS to be, I'd be less likely to pay for QS should it go commercial.
Congrats to the QS dev for getting the Google gig. - ScottyMcBaggs, on 12/07/2007, -0/+4Actually, it's pretty well-known that Google's pay is a little lower than standard rates. There are many other benefits of working there though, like free caf, stock options (their shares are at like 800 bucks a pop right now), 20% of work hours on personal projects, you work at the same company as Ken Thompson, Guido, etc etc.
- ilgaz, on 12/07/2007, -0/+4It is because Alcor has a job at Google and probably it takes his all time. He is also one of nice developers actually saying the truth. If you want stability or having unstable experience there are alternatives. Of course as it is open source now, people (some talented developers) can takeover development.
- spyseetuna, on 12/07/2007, -0/+4whoops, i meant "(ctrl-space)project planning meeting 12/18 7pm(tab)i(enter)". digg ate the html-looking stuff.
- devnull08, on 12/07/2007, -0/+4What is it with people? As soon as you hear someone talk about anything mac related, you get this ***** troll who kicks and screams about everything Apple. I wouldn't be surprised if he was drooling when he types his BS comments.
The good thing is that these trolls are easy to spot. They always start their sentences with "Macs are a piece of *****" and end them with "I'll get dugg down by fan boys but it doesn't really matter." What's best is their arguments "PCs are vastly superior because of the fact that more people use them." LOL "Macs are a piece of *****... Sure maybe they used to be better and video editing" LOL
Oh
"Macs are a piece of *****... Sure maybe they used to be better and video editing..."
It seems you need help with that post.
"Macs are PIECES of *****... Sure maybe THEIR better AT video editing..."
or
"Macs are PIECES of *****... Sure maybe they used to be better AT video editing..."
devnull@mailinator.com is where you can "reach" me troll - Weaselboy, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3Saw that. Would be nice if he would release his cleaned up version.
- ilgaz, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3He is one of the developers Google hired.
- Iwantawii, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3"Sheeple"*
- devnull08, on 12/07/2007, -0/+3Has anyone read this yet?
http://lipidity.com/apple/cleaning-up-quicksilver/ - erics4, on 12/07/2007, -1/+4I used to use it quite a bit, then went back to using Spotlight when I realize all I was using was app launcher and global hotkeys. I found an app called "Global Hotkeys" that runs in 10MB rather than the 300MB which QS averaged, even after I slimmed its catalog quite a bit.
- ZzizZ, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2Wow, this is one special app, it's even developed a cult following and he's just going to abandon it (and them?).
"While it's certainly disappointing to hear Jitkoff's somewhat grim outlook for Quicksilver (at least as we know it), there's one major silver lining. Since Quicksilver is now open source, anyone can pick up the current stable trunk from the Quicksilver repository and run with it if they please. Also—from the sound of things—the Quicksilver development team is a little short on hands, so if you love some Quicksilver and would be interested in taking an active role in its further development and survival (and, of course, you've got some programming chops), I'm sure they'd love the extra help."
I have a feeling that there will be some more folks that can smell this opportunity and step up. Is that naive? - MonkeyFarts, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2You mean 30 MB? 300 MB is blown way out of proportion. I'm even running every plugin and action possible, plus like 30 triggers, and I average between 30 and 40. Unless you're counting virtual memory…
- Peavey, on 12/07/2007, -1/+3If he started charging the user base of Quicksilver would drop drastically, depending on the price he set.
- Azakaa, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2Ouch... I used to, well, hate Mac until I found out about Quicksilver. This program more or less made me go out and buy a Macbook Pro and switch OS for my day to day work (for gaming i still use Windows). That's how good this application is! It just makes your life a billion times easier if you take the time to learn what it can do for you beyond "launching" applications. If it dies a part of me dies :|
- ScottyMcBaggs, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2It's not going to die.. I think a lot of Mac people underestimate open-source. I come from a Linux background and have recently started using an iMac at home for everything. When something like this happens to a piece of OSS, someone else becomes the project maintainer.
- northernmunky, on 12/07/2007, -2/+3I found Quicksilver far faster than spotlight? Am I missing something?
- Rice, on 12/07/2007, -1/+2I don't get it. Why is it doomed?
- guydudeman, on 12/07/2007, -1/+2Apparently not.
- Azakaa, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1Yeah I saw that too. Sounds like he has made some progress already. Good stuff :)
- Carniphage, on 12/07/2007, -1/+1Must admit, I stopped using it after Leopard. Spotlight does everything I need (including quick calculations). And for me, QS crashed all the time.
- willyb1, on 07/13/2008, -0/+0Quicksilver is the best!
- siddhinfo, on 12/13/2007, -0/+0I have read about this application in the newpaper and other forum that this is very good application that work on Mac.
- inactive, on 12/07/2007, -2/+2Or the MPlayer skin? QuickSilver is the best MPlayer skin ever!!
- Peavey, on 12/07/2007, -2/+1Hear, hear. Well spoken, Bruce.
Err, jmnz. - klaupacius, on 12/07/2007, -4/+3I use Spotlight now with Leopard. But I prefer just a launcher, I was using LaunchBar. For me the unwanted/unused extras of QS were bloat.
- rlahiff, on 01/10/2008, -3/+1What are you missing here. More software chocies, more hardware exspansion choices, more help is available do i really need to go on.. i think you are just pissed you paid 1800 dollars for a macbook when you could have got a 800 compareable laptop for 800.
Yes in some circumstances a USER BASE does tie greatly into QUALITY - popularity kind of hides the argument. - statiktv, on 12/07/2007, -6/+3for a guy that created such an intuitive program, he really lacks a lot of common sense to not realize what a technological and financial gold mine he is sitting on.
- guydudeman, on 12/07/2007, -5/+1You didn't read all the way to the end of my question... you know, the part where I wrote "when you read the title" did you?
- cjlacz, on 12/07/2007, -6/+0I prefer LaunchBar too. It doesn't have all the plug-ins that quicksilver does, but I don't need them. LaunchBar has most of it built in. It's so much smarter about searching too. Just type what you want rather then being forced to go to a category first. In particular I love that when controlling iTunes.
- rlahiff, on 12/07/2007, -10/+1PCs are vastly superior because of the fact that more people use them. Like pcs or not and whether macs are a better piece of hardware is irrelevant when most of the market is software designed for pcs. Which also makes it much more difficult for people who take their computers in to get fixed seeing as how not all computer techs know how to fix macs.
- guydudeman, on 12/07/2007, -28/+3Did anyone else think this had something to do with the clothing brand when you read the title?
- tabledesk, on 12/07/2007, -31/+5I'm curious: digg this up if you stopped using Quicksilver once you realized Leopard's Spotlight application retrieval was just as fast.
- rlahiff, on 12/07/2007, -44/+3Macs are a piece of ***** - they have zero comparative advantage over pcs anymore. Yet they cost 4 times more cuz they have a cute little apple on them and they are white. Sure maybe they used to be better and video editing or something similar but those days are long gone.
I'll get dugg down by fan boys but it doesn't really matter - least I didn't pay for a brand name.

What is Digg?
