- h3xley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It's probably ARM.
- Sarki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Ars says it's Samsung, and they have a research firm backing that up:
http://digg.com/apple/iPhone_what_s_inside_Samsung_inside - Greyarea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Almost certainly ARM. Apple had a job advert a while ago requiring ARM experience. Also makes sense from a low-power perspective.
- mindsnare, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5All Windows based PDA's advertise their processor speed and memory. So they are trying to compare it.
obviously this is completely useless because it is a different OS, not to mention the fact that Windows Mobile is a big pile of monkey shiat - baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5They didnt call me back about my Gerbel Powered Processor Chip.
- Lownin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@Iaplacian
Intel's embedded xscale wouldn't be a bad fit for the iPhone, so it does make sense that they might have used an Intel chip. Just not the same chip that exists in their other computers. - TritonX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"Please be AMD, please please please..."
Do you have at least an idea why are you asking so badly to have amd processor on the iPhone? - forgetfulca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@laplacian:
lownin beat me to it, but I just wanted to add, both amd and intel have a huge embedded chip business. AMD stays afloat from it, they are just about the biggest embedded supplier around. Apple could do much worse. Additionally, they'd have a lot to gain by further diversifying their suppliers, it would keep them on their toes. (unlike how complacent motorolla got being apple's only cpu manufacturer.) - haelios, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are 4 ARM cores and one CSR one for Bluetooth. One of the ARM cores is an 11 series core which will spit out the performance needed for the flashy UI and other things.
- laplacian, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8Using an AMD or Intel chip for either of these products makes little sense.
- ilgaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So it will be my first set top TV box with a fan running at all times, no thanks Intel.
I don't give a heck to pseudo Mhz, I just care if it can display 720P with 30 fps adding couple of deinterlace/enhance tricks and they should be done on dedicated chip from a known vendor.
Thanks really... - sufferwell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1According to wikipedia it uses ARM11
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM_architecture - williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It IS in fact, a SoC - a system-on-a-chip - like in almost every mobile handset on the planet.
MacOS is already portable across PowerPC and x86 architectures. Adding another isn't a shock. The OS is a lot closer to the desktop MacOS than Windows XP is to Windows Mobile. - rbanffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ARM makes a lot of sense - very low power with good enough performance. Best of all, it's modular so, whoever supplies it (could be Samsung) can put a whole lot of whatever they want (like a AV playback and 2D or pseudo-3D stuff) on the same chip.
Profit margins must be lower than with the iPod, but, again, Cingular is footing part of the bill.
And it would be delicious to know the "Newton II" is based on the same CPU.
I doubt, however, Apple has an exclusive deal on the SoC design that went into it. Expect some very cool PDAs to arrive soon. - fjc8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not really going to be OS X. It's some other OS with a similar GUI on top and possibly a similar API.
It's sort of like the difference between Windows CE/Windows Mobile and Windows XP -- similar interface and API, but otherwise very different. - DarthNuts, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Why do we even care whose chip is inside? I can understand why investors want to know, but does it really affect the end user?
- mrcamuti, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I dugg this long before you even posted... but yes. Well put.
- EndlessRain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1samsung s3c2410 have been used to power pdas with comparable functions.
- Outdoor83, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Unless I've lost my mind and am misunderstanding the situation, doesn't this mean that one has to have specific builds for the iPhone? Lots of people I know were touting the fact that any OS X software would run on it... I guess they were wrong.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3you are probably right
http://www.digg.com/apple/Apple_job_ad_implies_that_the_iPhone_will_use_an_ARM_processor_ala_newton
/shameless plug - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would be surprised if it isn't powered by Marvell's new PXA320.
- TekGuru, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Steorn power. perpetual motion sounds good to me.
- cyzum, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Heh. My uncle designed the chip that runs the iPhone.
- enharrin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just FYI, Intel _is_ supplying flash memory for the iPhone.
- Lazybones, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1They are, it is a special version.. Basically OS X Mobile, and Apple has not announced ANY support for 3rd party software. Sounds like they want it to be locked down like an iPod
- williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It's interesting if you want to know how it works.
- OrlyonokEaglet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I didn't know Samsung produced a chip that could run an OS this advanced. It can't be a 'system on chip' so it must have some real raw power.
- sv650touring, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1That's nothing. I heard that Paramounts says there were more than six Star Trek movies.
- ra3or, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I wish back in the day apple went with AMD too...but of course they aren't going to any time soon.
- virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5LOL! You think Apple would go with Intel for computers and AMD for the phone, yeah right. It's probably the same type of insides as an iPod video just a lot better.
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -19/+3Please be AMD, please please please...
