- longofest, on 10/12/2007, -2/+114I wish I could edit the post... the boot-loader will actually work on ANY Intel mac, not just the iMac. I put iMac in the title in the rush to get it submitted because I knew about the screenshots of the guy working on it. So, MacBook Pro, Intel iMac, Intel Mac Mini are all game.

Like I heard on the Mac Roundtable podcast, one of the guys said that he is a .NET developer and uses Windows at work, but uses the Mac for everything else.
Many Mac users are also gamers and have to have a separate computer to play games as they're meant to be played. If PC games can be run well on a Mac booting XP, this is a great thing for Mac users who are gamers. Many of the major titles DO get ported to Mac but most perform very poorly compared to the PC version.
There are many good reasons to put Windows on a Mac, and the previous mentioned are just two. I am primarily a Mac user and I only use Windows for gaming and running IIS so I can continue to develop ASP websites for work (the choice of ASP is beyond my control).
I am not a Windows-fangirl or a Mac-fangirl. I am a well informed computer user who realizes that there is a need (for some people) to be able to boot Windows on a Mac.
However, I do prefer Macs any day of the week. - ldenman, on 10/12/2007, -16/+79i love all those people who just said "ooh..thats toootall BS!! PHOTOOOOCHOP!!!"

- JaceFuse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18To those who wonder why you would want to run XP on a Mac...
It's safe to say that anyone who owns a Mac knows the advantages of OSX. They do, after all, own a Mac. However, only the stubborn would deny the advantages of using Windows. The way I see it, owning a Mac that you could optionally boot into Windows gives you the best of both worlds. A sleek, powerful, elegant system that can be switched over temporarily to use the defacto-standard OS in the productivity world.
I'm guessing most Mac users will still spend more time in OS X, but for those times they need Windows, isn't it great to have the capability? - rusdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15This is great news. However, in the interests of full disclosure, I'd like to note that there are some issues with drivers, most importantly hardware video acceleration. I'm sure these will be resolved shortly, but for now, no playing games on XP.
P.S You need an XP SP2 CD for this procedure. - Disparity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I can't wait for the first benchmark tests to come out... Wouldn't it be funny if the macs were faster?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16why the hate ?
its not like theyre forcing you to install windowsxp on _YOUR_ mac... - nemattoad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16To everyone complaining about the SP2 thing, SP2 slipstreaming is incredibly easy. If entering a few arguments in the commandline is too much work, theres a program that will do that step for you!. All you need is the SP2 redistributable (google SP2 redistributable), a XP CD that has no Service pack OR has sp1 and a program called nLite, which is free (google it).
Any retail/OEM copies sold of XP these days have SP2 integrated, so if you are going to buy a fresh license, you need not worry. - kkapoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Here's a Flickr set of XP up and running on a Macbook Pro. The pics show the bootloader as well as the components in Device manager that need drivers. I believe all the driver issues have been sorted out except the Video Card (X1600) and the Built in Camera. Enjoy!!

I'm so close to buying an intel Mac I can taste it. Must resist....for now. - beagle72, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Someone should launch a contest where the 1,000th person to say "why would anyone want to run WinBLOWS on a MAC!?" has to *pay* $13,000.
I say kudos to the winner. This kind of ingenuity and problem-solving represents the true spirit of the computer enthusiast, not juvenile trash talking against operating systems.
As some have pointed out countless times, there are myriad reasons to run Windows on a Mac. Not everyone needs to, not everyone wants to. But some people do need to and some people do want to, and why shouldn't they?
Sometimes one wonders if people use their computer for the operating system, or the applications? Do you just open pretty Finder windows and scroll around them all day? No, you use applications, whether that's on OS X, Windows, Linux, or whateverthehellOS (TM). It's all fine and well to prefer many Mac applications, but basic counting skills tell us that there are gazillions of applications written for Windows. It is not shocking that some people may need to use some of them.
The Win-on-Mac solution is a great day for OS polygamy. As it should be. They're freakin' tools, people. Don't be one yourself. - iheartbeer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Don't let your cat pee on it!
- kindablue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Hopefully before I get home from work. Don't let me down, Internet.
- wardriver20, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Time to celebrate.
This is the first time in my life that I celebrate a hack release. :D - oshu, on 10/12/2007, -14/+28Nope. All the windows users who like to drool over mac hardware now get to enjoy its greatness ;)
- cfazzini, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Huh? What would Apple respond to? They already said they aren't stopping anyone from putting XP on a Mac.
- Fraghappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14You have to realize that Apple doesn't license out OSX to be used on other hardware; they maintain the stability of their OS partially because they keep such tight control of what hardware on which it runs. Windows, on the other hand, is licensed out to computer manufacturers that use many different types of parts. Therefore, Apple has refused to give out OSX licenses if not used on Mac hardware.
The contrary is not true on Windows--Apple has publicly stated that they are not against booting Windows on their hardware, and Microsoft doesn't care on what hardware its OS runs.
The short of the matter is that OSX and Windows were developed for different distribution plans, so putting OSX on a PC is a vastly different matter than putting Windows on a Mac. - kwojniak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16How long before a torrent for an XP SP2 CD with Mac bootloader shows up? :)
- puggy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Yea, and a little $ speeds things up too.
- canyonblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11perhaps some folks really like to run multiple OSs just because it is fun? perhaps those same people don't want to have to have the clutter/expense of 2 machines? SOOOO... why not just simply have the BEST machines (best looking etc.) run EVERYTHING and make EVERYONE happy?
- Billistic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11The ability to dual boot seems like a right reason to buy to me...
- msprout, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12A gold dabloon to the first person to emulate MacOS X on Windows XP running on an iMac.

http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/16/windows-xp-on-mac-solution-posted/ - Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12@oshu:
I think it's a little of both. Plenty of Mac users I know are frustrated because there are certain XP only programs they just can't use, but otherwise use their Macs for everything. Now they can use both.
OTOH, I've always admired Apple hardware, and if I ever bought a new laptop, would consider giving this a try for the opposite reasons--I like XP for most things but there are some Mac-specific programs I'd like to try, too. - spiralfive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Didn't Apple say they wouldn't do anything to stop users from booting Windows on a Mac? If i'm not mistaken, it was somethingl like that, except they would not support it and would not allow users to boot OS X on a pc.... legally.
- CrzyMke, on 10/12/2007, -15/+24Yeah! this news is sooo pre-lunchtime.
Next we'll be pulling out our pet rocks and slap bracelets. - bighead0698, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9taken from the readme (looks pretty simple to me):
Quick instructions for those knowing what they're doing
-------------------------------------------------------
1. Unzip the xom.zip file
2. Use the included sp2.nrb nero project as a baseline.
3. Add the XP source files to the root of the project
4. Overlay the XOM files (in the patch folder) to the root.
5. Set the boot loading image to the included boot.img.
6. Burn and done. - tmcpheeters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9$20 dollars to the first person who goes into the Apple Store with a WinXP CD and get's this running in the store. :) haha
- volcomjerk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11"If you build it, they will hack it."
- whistle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Apparently it does work on all Intel Macs.
- ldenman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9http://www.contrastandcompare.com/download
- MrUnderbridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Well, let's see if the XP on Mac community comes forth and makes as much effort toward getting hardware working as the linux boys do. I figure the job's easier - a whole lot less hardware to support.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I am about to install on my intel mac mini core solo, I'll let you know how it goes
- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15The number of Macs that get infected with viruses is about to go waaaayyy up! :)
- fleetskeet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Those are my two reasons for using Winblows, PC gaming and .NET development. Unfortunately, I have the G4 Mini and XP runs like ass under VirtualPC.
- cmer, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Can I tripple-digg this?! Awesome work!
- inkhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Also everyone once you get windows working, go to ATI's website and install the drivers for the ati 1600x, it makes a HUGE differen in performance, and windows has a cool feature to use hardware assist on the video card ;-)
- kkapoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm just glad it's Open Source. I hope someone sets up a Sourceforge project so that this is constantly updated and refined.
- ph3wl, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Now there is a reason to pay 2k for a macbook :), but I wonder if XP will support the hardware. iSight xp drivers? :) lol
- althe3rduww, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This news is bringing the computer community together. Windows users and Mac users are holding hands.... well ok maybe not that friendly. But you don't hear the usual mac vs windows arguements happening, because for once you can have your cake and eat it too!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6just a thought, can apple lock this down if they want ?
or is it a full-blown hack which cant be stopped in any way, no matter what apple do.
can anyone elaborate ? - Swamphhh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Can you do this with a older XP Pro CD or does it have to be a SP2 CD?
