- ravenmuffin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26What's wrong with...
Consumer desktop: iMac
Consumer laptop: iBook
Professional desktop: Mac Pro
Professional laptop: MacBook Pro
The "iBook" has incredible brand recognition amongst students. - iBookG4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Steve specifically mentioned that the Powerbook was renamed to MacBook because they want to include "Mac" in every product name. iMac makes sense because there's "Mac" in it. Powermac makes sense because there's "Mac in it. iBook...not so much.
- seitanguy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I wanna know when the 12" MacBook Pro is coming!
- nekaidesigns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4they've been manufacturing apple's notebooks for years - and doing a fine job of it. gotta let the past go sometime.
- SystemError, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6iLiked having the i in the consumer stuff and the Power in the PowerMac and PowerBook
MacBook Pro is kinda dumb sounding and hard to say - rcook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"omfg....another apple article on the front page."
Ummmm ... there's an Apple category too if you hadn't noticed. ;) - kyrre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4And here I was thinking that they dropped the Power in Powerbook, since the architecture no longer is powerpc. Well, live and learn I guess. If it where so it makes sense to keep iMac and iBook.
- defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6That, my friend, is a rumor all in itself. :)
- jhunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Har har har. "iDiots". I see what you did there.
- armature, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4the iPod isn't a mac... it's a Pod (thought this was obvious). They wouldn't call the laptop the PodBook... and they wouldn't call the desktop the Power Pod... why would they call the iPod anything containing 'Mac'?
- ohnnyj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Amen to that.
I'm holding off until the end of this year, why?
Intel is going to release much improved processors (Conroe core) w/the added benefit of better battery management and 64-bit support. So hopefully by then Apple will incorporate them into their laptops.
Merom Processor (Conroe core mobile part) + 12in MacBook = me happy (very happy) - MOGua, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Yes, Asustek, the business name of the company who are commerically known as Acer."
I think you meant Asus. (pronounced "a-soos", don't ask me why, They say it this way and it's their company)
Acer = 宏碁
Asustek = Asus = 華碩
Two completely seperate, competing Taiwanese companies. - jerwood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Try this one on for size:
iMacBook
Yeah. But you would never have thought they'd trot out something as awkward as "MacBook Pro." - deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"And here I was thinking that they dropped the Power in Powerbook, since the architecture no longer is powerpc."
Powerbooks were called Powerbooks long before PowerPC was inside them. - JasonPrini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wonder:
How big is the new iBook AC Adapter? The MacBook Pro adpater is MUCH bigger than the previous version. This impacts portability much more that 0.1" thinner design. - OriginalGamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Apple has almost all their products made by companies who specialize in hardware components, moving more towards standard parts helps Apple achieve more industry standards as well as meet high manufacturing demand for things like mobos and hard drives. So Apple can stick to what there best at, designing hardware and engineering software.
- lavawalker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3thinkbox:
I never said the "i" made Apple popular; only the names iTunes and iPod are recognizable brands.
Keeping the iBook name might be a smart decision. "MacBook" confirmed, fine.
That's all, dude. ;) - drizek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Wow. Youre pretty naive if you think apple will use anything other than integrated graphics.
- davdav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hopefully.
- AhmedB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If they put integrated graphics into the macbook/ibook, then they've lost my $1.5K+ forever. first a hardware-buggy macbook then an ibook with integrated graphics, better off going and getting an inexpensive $600 mini and playing with it
- Kriz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I wonder if they'll get the ATI mobile x1600 graphics, or a less powerfull version.
- macdaddy23, on 10/12/2007, -12/+14You think by now all these rumors they could get the ***** name right. The new intel iBook will be called the MacBook. You know, without the "pro"
- jodamiller, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3They didn't mention the dimensions of the 13" screens for these "MacBooks", but I guess it's a foregone conclusion that they're going to be wide screen.
- veritech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i hear you on that
- Midnightbrewer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2But who wouldn't want to buy a MacPod? (Ugh.) ;)
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Because it's a larger display? Believe it or not, some people like having a larger display, even if it is heavier, even if it doesn't afford better resolution. Some of us love our eyes and don't want to squint to read everything. Some of us want a heavier laptop so that it sits more stable in our laps (but not so heavy as it is uncomfortable to carry, and the iBook 14" is one of the lighter laptops I've ever owned).
I tried both the 12" and the 14" before I bought mine. Hands down the 14" won in usability. So I went with it. - zippo512, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That sounds about right. I think they'll definitely have integrated intel graphics, but I would think they're gonna go with the newer (slower, but more energy efficient) Yonah intels. 1.2ghz, 1.3ghz?
- Laughingman234, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sweeet! cant wait to get my hands on a new iBook...kinda sad I'll have to wait until June+ but still cant wait!!!
Also on the naming...not sure if this has been said yet... the i's have made them famous but Steve said he wants Mac in the name of all the products now...so I dont know how he'll put that in there but i'm guessing the Mac Book.... even though I like the iBook much better. - boolean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A typo in the news title makes me wonder how reliable the source is.
"Taiwan's Austek wins order for 1.2 mln Apple iBook notebook computers - report".
Asustek? - recover82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well i know what im spending my money on this june.
as long as it's not limited to 1024*768..if it is. . ill come back to this exact post and cuss like mad. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd wager the specs will be close to those of the mac mini, being 1.5 or 1.66 dual, with integrated intel graphics
- Korvaras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nifty. Although i won't be purchasing a new mac anytime soon, I can't wait to see the new models that will be coming out.
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1does anyone else see the irony here? ASUS making notebooks for apple, with ATI and INTEL chipsets? wow. I know the boat has sailed and people are cool with the Intel thing, but PC vendors such as ASUS who are one of the largest motherboard manufacturers for PCs are now making components for Apple, that is just - wow.
That is, if you believe this rumor. - jerwood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I missed that one. Link?
Unless Stevie says it, I don't believe it. And then, even if he does, I don't. Video iPods are a terrible idea. - ToadX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like how it has a 13.3" screen. I hope that's widescreen. I hope a 13.3" widescreen MacBook Pro comes out.
- thashiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm glad I went with the 14" iBook and I've never looked back. The 12" felt tiny and difficult to type on.
- r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bigger AC adapter only affects portability really if it was the size of a breeze block. As long as it's around about the size of your average Wintel laptop power supply, I don't see any problem. And the Wintel laptop supplies are usually big.
- AhmedB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Perhaps a viPod coming down the line, sounds better to the ear than a 'vee'Pod
- poofyhairguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Personally I can't wait for the Macbook non-Pros. I need a new laptop and they can't be released fast enough.
I would actually prefer Intel Graphics if possible, as that would make it easier to dual boot Linux in the future. If they release it in June with the new Intel Graphics chipset, I will buy one from the first batch! - savingaurora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol i would love to have a new intel iBook. I love my G4 but :D
- ehmjay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think this is great news, however I don't understand why a laptop marketed to students would have a widescreen display, whereas the Prosumer/Pro notebooks do not.
That just seems odd to me.
Either way, I'm excited! - plkrtn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yes, Asustek, the business name of the company who are commerically known as Acer.
They've been building the Apple ibook for years. - forth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Asus has been building Apple's notebooks for years.
- ohnnyj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But if they use integrated it will make a dual boot OSX XP system a lot easier as the mini has integrated and they have almost everything (including graphics) working natively in XP.
...of course it is only a matter of time before the drivers for all the other systems will be working, but just saying. - ref-d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm waiting for that myself. Wish they'd hurry.
- digitalvision, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All I want out of the new machines is the option for a slightly higher resolution than 1024x768. I love the form factor of the ibook (both sizes), but just a little more real estate would help out alot.... it looks like with the addition of bootcamp, they're going for some market share, and one of the pieces to do that is that you need comparable resolutions than others near the price point.
- DocNo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I do agree the driver thing was bad, but you think the PC mod scene would learn "live by the benchmark, die by the benchmark". Guess fanboyisms die hard :p
And while the new iBooks will no doubt be nice, I'm seriously considering getting the MacBook Pro (horrible name not withstanding) now that Final Cut Studio has gone universal. - veritech, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2i think the x1300 most likely, unless it follows the route of the mac mini:(
- Kerr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I can tell you with 99.9% certainty that it won't be the x1600, since those are in the MacBook Pro...it will be something more main stream, and less powerful.
- flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I will buy a new ibook to replace my aging one if they redesign the case to something cool like the original clamshells. If not, its macbook pro for me.
also if they integrate the graphics I wont get one. If they put a good graphics card in that would be cool. -
