- reldruh, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24I don't think I've ever been as impressed with a company as I have been with Intel recently. Facing a significant competitive threat and losing market share, instead of making the too common decision to sue somebody, they start innovating. Core 2 Duo is wonderful, price cuts have been great, increased open source support. Intel is a huge company, with massive resources to draw on and for the past year or two they've put a significant amount of those resources to making great products and getting them in the hands of consumers. I hope they're being rewarded proportionally (ie people buying their processors). The only downside I can see here is that all these great things from Intel are taking a heavy toll on AMD and if AMD falls (is no longer a threat to Intel) then I have my doubts as to whether or not they'd continue to impress me so much.
- Dochtuir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13quad core duo? You mean the core 2 quad?
- fjc8, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Well... Core 2 Duo is a heavily modified and evolved dual core Pentium III.
Imagine where Intel would be today, had they never released the Pentium IV. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I hope AMD's Barcelona/phenom destroys Intel's new chips...just so they can be on even terms again.
- arsenic0, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I totally agree on all points.
But I sense there is worrying going on inside AMD/ATI right now. ATI's card from first reports is less powerful with full AA/AF than a 8800GTX, sure its slightly cheaper(is it now?) but for being so late to the game its a pretty sad try.
I will hold reservations on AMD's new chip, "God" or "Super Duper chip" or whatever that stupid name is they gave the next line of Athlon's better hit big or AMD is in for a long slump.
Honestly with Intel cranking out Quad core SERVER proc's for 260 bucks retail and 8 core proc's not in the too distant future AMD better have some incredible new technology, like plasma guns but for CPU's. - HenvY, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Xeons can be used in a desktop. With these prices it certainly would be the cheapest way to go quad core.
- jawadde, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4yea, the past year i've been in constant awe how intel has risen victorious from a seemingly lost battle with AMD... a year ago I would have placed all my bets on the opterons since the P4 was stagnating in everything except power consumption. A turnaround like this hasn't been seen since IBM shipped the G4 and G5. Then again : look where IBM is now in the desktop market (note : the POWER processor is doing just fine in servers, and IBM rules the embedded & console market, so please don't pin this statement down on that. I was talking on how IBM seemed to be up for a great run in the desktop market but somehow stranded in GHz-myth land)
- ghandi69, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I have a cousin who is a chip designer for intel.
About more than a year ago, I was giving him a hard time about AMD( I had just purchased one), and how AMD market share was increasing and Intel was in trouble. He said to me that AMD has always been around, and that Intel needs the competition so they are not considered a monopoly. However, he said, you'll notice that whenever AMD's market share starts to get close to its historic high, Intel will come in and just blow them out of the water and let everyone know who is boss.
Just wait a year or two he said.
I'd say he was right as of now. - antoni, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Why the hell is this under 'Apple' category?? A very small percentage of Intel chips go to Apple...
- FallenWings, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Can someone comment on the state of software utilization of quad-core CPUs? I know the Source engine will take advantage of this soon, but what about the rest of the software spectrum?
- rickcarson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Uh... *points at brand spanking new pricing on the MacBooks and Cinema Displays*
Dude, get with the naughties, not the nineties.
Since you don't seem to be up to date on Apple, here's a brief recap:
(1) Steve is back! (No, really!)
(2) They switched to Unix! (No, really!)
(3) They started selling a low cost computer called the Mini, kind of like a half height Cube. Under $500! (No, really!)
(4) They switched to Intel! (No, really!) (NB: this kind of took some of the shine off #3, but hey)
(5) Apple has a program to let you run Windows too on your Mac (No, really!)
(6) Their top of the line computer debuted at $1000 cheaper than the equivalent Dell (No, really!)
Or, in the words of Adam off Mythbusters:
"I reject your reality and I substitute my own" - rickcarson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Core 2 chips are based on the Pentium M chips. The Pentium M (a notebook chip) was for a long time Intel's only advantage over AMD, since it was so good that people were taking it and putting it in desktops. And you know when a chip overflows (sic) from notebook land to desktop land there's got to be something pretty good about it.
So rather than innovate per se, they took about the only thing that was working for them, and did a whole lot more of it.
Also, interestingly enough, a lot of gamers had started switching to high end notebooks, since they are easier to take to Lan parties. - rickcarson, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Because they're the only ones that do anything interesting with them?
- c0d3z3r0, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I hope Apple does lower the price on their Mac Pro Systems.
Or makes a cheaper Mac Pro like system (That is not the iMac)
Mac Pros are really nice machines, but their prices are too high, if you want any upgrades the system would cost over $3000 - davidhildreth, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2don't do it
woodcrest is worth the money - Rhino2, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2"quad core duo"
*droools* 8 cores per CPU... Mmmmm - lowmagnet, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Mac Pros use Xeons of the Cloverton and Woodcrest varieties.
- an0nym0us, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Apple lower their price? Bwahahahahahahhaha. I'm sorry, it's just...bwhaahahahahahahaha.
- PATSCRU, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3mmmmm.....i could just swim in intel price drops.....
always refreshingly large drops, and fairly frequent too...can't wait till the quad core duos come down so i could replace my e6600 - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1Are you mental?
- fadetoone, on 10/11/2007, -7/+0Let me know when the quad core PC chip prices come down. I don't care too much about servers. Let the server farms worry about it.
- KennMSr, on 10/11/2007, -12/+2Less expensive upgrade paths for Original MacPro, Whooo!!!
- decipherd, on 10/11/2007, -14/+4oh , boo hoo.
if you want to bury it, bury it.. no need to shout about it.
