- azar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2All you people saying "macs are too expensive" piss me off. Spend time with one if you can. If you don't like them enough to pay the price, stay on your machines. "OMG Porches suxx0rz! Buy a Camery or Corrolla!!" People will buy what they want to buy. The Mac vs Windows vs Linux battle will never end. About the article, I think a price drop of 200$ would be welcome :)
Me, I am happy paying a bit more for a machine that I feel looks slick and runs without driver and virus problems. I think apple's prices are fine. Stop saying "OMG THIS IS EXPENZAVE!!11one one", or "WINDOWZ & LINUX RULZ FTW!!!". God, Digg's comments are going so downhill. - subtle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2frem001:
The Dell comment was more than likely a reference to the fact that the cracked leak of OSX86 can be installed on many Intel-based machines (including Dell's - as pictured on the OSX86 Project site) for free.
Anyway kiddies, this same crappy rumour was posted on digg about 19 hours ago: http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0511intelibook.html
But hey, it's about macs, right? So it must be good. Let's just keep digging. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Intel chips cost more than IBM chips.
Cheaper? Nope. Unless Apple has decided they don't like their big fat margins anymore. - antiTRACE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1200 dollars off somthing that is 2000 isnt "VERY CHEAP" - BLEH!
- orb_nsc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like to pick on Apple fan(atics) as much as anybody, but if they do knock the price of the ibook down a couple hundred bucks, it might be enough for me to get one for my wife, who wants a sleek little laptop. And I could finally see what the big effin deal is with OSX too...
- stokestack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Come on, guys, you've seen the earlier posts: The hand-cranked new iMacs with the green and purple case are going to ROCK! But they're only available to aborigines.
- MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no way they will be cheaper! need more evidence than this.
- apheleon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0is it just me, or does it feel like apple is feeding BS to thinksecret now?
- rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Dell Mac will be cheaper
- quackdoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apples are screwing themselves up with the high profit margins. Maybe they can dictate the prices to that extent. I believe that's indeed suicidal venture Mr Jobs.
I maynot have the eye candy with Linux but then give it another 6-8 months and we could surely have enough refinement in the desktops and installers to seriously challange Macs. Microsoft is dead. Prices have to be decreased to make sense to encourage a larger number of people in the fold. - stray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the headline got cut off. The full headline should probably read, "Intel Macs might be very Cheap (but I doubt it)".
- DiamondDog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a hard time believing that Apple would lower the price below $999. They would be moving into the price range of inferior produces, that that could hurt their image.
- spade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^ Why partition, from all the rumors Apple's going to do that for you, triple boot to your delight.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Steven Jobs will keep the price at it is. The difference will go to his pocket.
- penguindude15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think that the chip used won't be a Pentium 4 unless they make a low end computer. Apples are all about performance. I have heard rumors that Intel has chips that they haven't released yet and might give them to apple to use first. Or they might only give them to apple and not Dell. These chips might actually blow the IBM chips out of the world. But, the game companies are coming out with all of their systems with IBM chips. So, there is definitely something going around that we don't know about. Apple leaves, Sony and Nintendo come in... This will be an interesting year. The speeds of the new apple computers better be fast though. Or they are dead.
- Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, just now for that price Dell lists Pentium 4 at 2.8GHz, 256MB RAM, Intel Extreme Graphics, and 80GB hard drive. No software (except Windows and WordPerfect word processor only). Dell goes to the trouble of saying there is no security software included. Add the fact that there is no Firewire (a $24 option) and the distinction is not as clear.
Actually it's still pretty clear, especially if you're buying an Apple monitor. - rydawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmmmmmmmmmm......maybe they'll have Centrinos then?
If the price comes down, I may consider getting my first Mac (and repartitioning, and installing Linux/Mac OS/Windows *rubbing hands together with glee and cackling*) - subtle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0stokestack: respek
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm betting that the price drops (if any) will be somewhat temporary in order to get more PC users to switch, especially now that they'll be able to also run Windows.
- doxtorray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"US$479 buys you a Dell Dimension E310 with a Pentium 4 at 3.2GHz, 512MB RAM, Intel Extreme Graphics (well, I wouldn't call it extreme :), and 160GB hard drive - WITH A MONITOR!"

The Mac Mini may have been cheap, but the flood of articles and comments from Mac zealots saying that the Mac Mini will finally lure Windows users in their droves, were not proved correct.
US$499 buys you a Mac Mini with a 1.25GHz G4, 512MB RAM, 32MB Radeon 9200, and a 40GB hard drive - NO MONITOR!

There is no comparison between Macs and PCs that are not over-priced to buggery! - ploink341, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Intel + Apple = About damn time!!
- G00mper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Knocking off $200 would make it a "discounted" price at best; nowhere near "very cheap"
- chosenone-, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Heh, this is a real troll fest!
"Doxtorray, even with the correct specifications for that Dell machine, it still represents more value, and certainly a faster CPU with more hard drive storage than the pathetic offering from Apple in their Mac Mini."
Apparantly this guy hasnt experienced the Mac delight of the software bundled. - mfearby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doxtorray, even with the correct specifications for that Dell machine, it still represents more value, and certainly a faster CPU with more hard drive storage than the pathetic offering from Apple in their Mac Mini.
- mechanisma22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yey! I will have one in time for college!
- mfearby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank you, Bluestarr, I will "except" it and take no part of your over-priced and pea-sized Mac market explosion. Good suggestion :-)
- TK99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple fundamentally is doomed as a 'hardware' company.
- mfearby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I haven't "experienced the Mac delight of the software bundled"? Having had to put up with the likes of QuickTime and iTunes, I think I know just how special your precious Mac software is. QuickTime is digitally retarded, particularly its idea of interface controls: "fill screen" is just pathetic!
Don't get me started on iTunes, the fat, memory-hog, that it is. I uninstalled that rubbish the moment I discovered that iTunes decided that I didn't need comment tags in my MP3s anymore, and instead thought that I'd prefer a bunch of hex codes. Really useful, that.
As for the rest of Apple's bundled treasury, I don't want, need, or would use any of it, and ever since XP shipped with a firewall, I don't think I've heard of any real infestations the likes of which were the bane of your average Microsoft mop-and-bucket IT cleaner. XP has come a long way, but it does have its faults; not enough to make me want to take out a loan to afford your over-priced beauties.
And I haven't been involved in a troll-fest in a very, very, long time. This is fun :) - link470, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Way too low for a laptop price. The LCD alone costs a fair bit.
- okto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Apple fundamentally is doomed as a 'hardware' company."
Yeah, especially considering that little music whatsit they seem to have so much trouble selling... - chosenone-, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, the people shouting "Apples are too expensive" are doomed.
Meanwhile, Apple users will sport a knowledgable smile and keep producing creative media, while the Windows user troubleshoots the crashing svchost.exe. - mos6507, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0People will look at the Intel Mac and instantly say "this is just overpriced commodity hardware". By offering the Mac at a closer pricepoint to comparable laptops, they will silence this criticism, especially if they use a new Intel processor which provides better performance/battery-life than other budget laptops (which are either underpowered or have desktop CPUs with 30 minute battery life). So the new iBook could be the portable equivalent to the Mac Mini. I would probably buy one of these new laptops if it had decent enough battery life.
- StanrickKubley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Would love to see cheaper Macs, but not expecting it. If they're cheaper to make, Apple will just make more money. Jobs and his insanely great profits.
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I guess Kevin Rose was WRONG!!! :P
- *jooloop*, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cheaper parts + same price = bigger profit
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'd rather pay slighly more for a product that lasts longer than pay for something that's really cheap and feels really cheap only to have it fail on me within a short period of time and also at a crucial time. I do hope their prices go down, but I also expect the quality of the product to be maintained. Even if the end product will end up being reasonably more expensive people will still complain and go for the cheaper option and when it breaks they will be pissed off and buy another cheap piece of *****. The best hardware out there, from what i've seen, is from Apple, Alienware, IBM (hopefully it carries on with lenovo) and sony (still on thin ice with the spyware hullabaloo). I'm sure there are some more reasonable brands.
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Ahahaha
love the trolls. Face your fears. With the price level fairly similar, we're going to see a huge spike in the Mac market share. The system loaded up with OS X will make this unstoppable. It's going to happen, so why not except it now. Buy...bye. - rewritable, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0alright now all i have to do to get one is give is my hand instaed of the whole arm YAY!!!
[/sarcasm] - frem001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i'd compare the prices with sony vaio's not dell
- dmron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0a 200 dollar drop in price of something that is 1000 or more does not make it "very cheap", Mr. Intelligent Article Submitter.
- PSPman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0will never happen...
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Grammar genius? You should think about pursuing a career in the tech sector. It seems as if you know what's going to happen before they actually do. Your turds wouldn't happen to be made out of solid gold, would they?
- nutcase, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0i will smash every mac i see
