- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I heard they had to change it because it turns out Creative filed a patent claiming they invented the idea of a boot chime.
- manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It'd be kind of shocking, to say the least, to have a different "bong" noise.
But I've always wished we could change it to a sound of our choice. - CJHtxGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For those commenting on how pointlessly-pointless this is, you don't need to share you're opinions. As a windows user it is very calming booting up my 6 year old first gen 400mhz g4 that boots blazing fast thanks to OS X, and hearing the boot sound.
- slantyeyed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Macs could rule the world, but the only thing stopping it is idiotic obsessing over the boot sound.
- MisterKen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not worried.
About 5 minutes after it's released, there will be dozens of shareware programs to change it back.
I loved the crash sound on my old '040 machine. It made my heart stop the first time I heard it. - andrebsd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"For those commenting on how pointlessly-pointless this is, you don't need to share you're opinions. ... Under that frame of mind; you also don't need to share your opinion. Everyone is entitled to say what they think, even if it isn't the same as your opinion. - snoopd1ggyDIGG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like my Ubuntu Start Up Sound ^_^
- underburn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, that sucks. Its the main reason I use a mac :(
- gheff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As long as it's not the inane Intel chime sound. Dum dum dum duuuuum.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A blank white page...
- evilspoons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's a *sound*. Jeeeeze. My Asus mainboard with startup (bios, not windows/linux/whatever) sounds lets you change them by reflashing the BIOS, so big freakin' deal.
- mpeters13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I still think the idea of a January 10.4.4 release is utter bs.
- dcipjr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Last time they changed it was when they switched from the 68000-series processor to the PowerPC. As a Mac user, now that they're switching architectures again, I find it only appropriate that they switch the chime, too. As long as it doesn't go away, it's OK by me -- I welcome the change.
The big question -- should they call the Power Mac the Power Mac? After all, it doesn't have a PowerPC in there anymore. Same argument can't be made for the PowerBook, though, since there were plenty of 68K-based PowerBooks. - kevd18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like my Ubuntu start up sound as well.
-Kevin - manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@MisterKen
The boot chime is in the firmware, not the hard drive, and can't be modified - if we were able to change it, we'd be able to do it right now.
I really wish Apple (or a crafty hacker) would change that. - hyperpasta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol This is big news to Mac users. It's the equivalent of a "New Windows Vista logo" post. +digg
- lightningrod220, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They could use that "chime" that the XBox 360 makes when you turn it on its side while the disk is spinning.... "rrrkkkk!"
- twitndiggfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DONT CHANGE THE BOOT CHIME, just hearing the ding when i boot up my mac is like calming.
- Pentad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe the new chime will be "D'oh!"
:-)
I'm just kidding folks. - mouseman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh no...I really hope they don't change it. it actually has a very long history...
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, the Ubnutu startup sound rules!
- hibern8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ratsass, we are talking about a different startup chime than the one you are thinking off. so pls stfu.
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The current Mac sound was carefully created to be a "palate cleanser," welcoming you to a new session or telling you that everything's going to be fine when you have to restart.
If they do change it, you can bet it's going to be even better, but with the same intention.
If Apple pulls another iPod Socks on us... well, that would suck. - analogtyler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im also all for the ubuntu startup.
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ubuntu, that is.
- stewacide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I quite dislike the current Apple-sound. Seems really low-fidelity.
- Harlequn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah I mean the guitar chord from the Quadras was cool. Just as long as it's not a wimpy beep like some of the pc's still emit.
- rookworm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The new sound: "click... whirr.. **BEEP** grind, grind, grind, ....."
- etx313, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I like my Ubuntu Start Up Sound ^_^"
ick. - nfotxn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's awesome is that most PC BIOS are still incapable of even playing a sampled sound over the sound card until the OS has started.
- Amplix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It would be great if you could choose between clasic boot chime and new boot chime. but if you're going to force a new one on us, i will not be happy
- cyberdork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Geez, how often do you guys reboot? I'm an iBook user and reboot maybe once a month.
- shamam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Boot sounds through the ages:
http://www.tcp.com/~dschaub/readme.html - ilovja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't mind different tunes. Every now and then, I get surprised by the boot sound. Bong! There is a way you can change its volume using third party software, but it would be nice if Mac can "think" when it's okay to be loud or not depending on the time of the day.
- pingviini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My favorite part about the custom boot chime, is that when something doesn't work, it makes no sound at all and fails silently. People don't realize that the annoying beep is there to inform you of the status, not to sound pretty. POST is your friend.
- apocxp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0sorry, i don't care about chimes. no digg.
- Cygnus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Boo!
- uncleFester, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Why is this news? The chime has changed over the lifetime of the Mac. I had two iterations (Mac+ and the SE/30 I still have), both of which have differing chimes from the now-familiar ppc-driven boot sound. It makes utter sense for the chime to change; this is another significant arch change for Apple and I think it's another cool notation of that fact.
-'fester - mrfish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I hear it's going to be the sound of Steve Job's Mothers nagging for you to get off your computer and go outside and do something with your life. Or maybe it will be a custom sound and one of you loosers can use it to propose to your girlfriend... ha ha ha.... oh who am I kidding. That nano thing was cool. *sigh*
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1HAHAHA MAC USERES, Don't expect MS PC WEENIES to have even a remote clue of what is going on here. Most I suspect would have no clue that the Mac's startup chime is something of comfort that goes way back.. ... .. Awwww the mind control Of Apple!! hahahh Oh wait steve is calling me... "what steve, empty my wallet?" "yes sir" . . . HAhahahahh . LOL.
- FoosYou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@luftwaffle
I see 104 people who didn't yawn so far.
Dugg! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'm a Mac user and I'd welcome a different sound in a heartbeat. I hate the darn BONG noise.
- jaspinDroid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1That settles it, I'm not buying an intel mac. This is just getting way too unholy.
The zen-like mac start-up chime has this nostalgic meditative effect on me. - Luftwaffle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1yawn
- yodaj007, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1So?
no digg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Alkiver IP: 68.238.52.70 has been banning anyone who edits his warez page! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Cracking_Force
- soopafly, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0"So?"
"yawn"
Lol...sorry this story didn't entertain you. Maybe Digg should change in order to cater to your needs. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Who the F cares what an Intel Mac start up sound will be.
Who the hell would be stupid enough to pay for an overpriced, slow, and hot Intel system? Even the clowns at Dell are trying to find a way to dump Intel if AMD can get their volumes up. - sporkman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0are you joking? this actually made front page. a difference in the noise of a machine starting up... I swear, people digg it just because it says "apple" maybe I should submit an article about granny smiths, or golden delicious apples...

What is Digg?
