- ajmoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34not sure why you'd want to watch video on an iPod nano...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24Well I'm still waiting to be able to play video on the Shuffle. And on my watch.
- Shivetya, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24now if the Nano could project the movie onto any flat surface that would rock :)
- JWallsID6999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16That would almost be funny if you didn't put the same thing on the story before this.
- David1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10http://www.lifehacker.com/software/downloads/download-of-the-day--handbrake-dvd-ripper-152498.php
- wphj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9No, it's fine on its own.
- malhtiek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Why not a direct link?
http://handbrake.m0k.org/ - bobbknight, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Hell lets see one for the pc or linux.
- AlphaSoulja, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Are there any similar programs for windows?
- MikeOSX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you use the full version of handbrake, you can up the quality to as high as you want. You can pick the resolution, frames per second, codec (mp4 or h.264), etc.
- badtz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I thought handbrake doesn't [temporarily ;)] remove the encryption? don't you need to use another program prior to feeding into handbrake?
- maram500, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Why the hell do people paste this *****? It's horrid crap that begs to be deleted from Digg.
- bobba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Ahh, DVD goodness. Now if only my Nano played video... and pong!"
It will.
http://ipodlinux.org/Podzilla - Linh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm still waiting to see handbrake support forced subtitles like AutoGK.
- wyrdness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"How long does it take?"
Depends on what you're encoding, the encoding settings you use and the machine that you're encoding on. I've found that my 1.4Ghz G4 mac mini is faster than my 1.8Ghz G5 iMac. I believe that this is something to do with the altivec code being optimised for G4.
I don't think that Handbrake has been updated for higher quality video available on the the 5.5G iPods. - repran, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Problem with handbrake: It does not support 640x480 - best (free) way to do this is Videora and DVD Decrypter. If you find one that does subtitles too and lets you select the audio track please let me know...
- Solafa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i have a problem were it would start ripping and it will tell me its done but the movie is only 1mins and 15 secs long.
- Kelmon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Really hate the rather daft icon for HandBrake/Instant HandBrake? Download nice replacement icons that at least indicate what the application is supposed to do here: http://www.modelconcept.net/?p=146. Well, they're better than the stupid drink & pineapple icons...
- JLD3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why would I want to worry with "drag and drop" when iTunes handles it for me? Plus the little screen on my video iPod is only needed till I can plug it in to the hotel TV to watch prerecorded videos. Mainly my iPod is for audio use. And it's nice being able to carry around almost my entire music collection when I'm driving for 8 hours. Select a playlist, set on shuffle mode, no more worries with what CD to listen to.
- GoDawgs7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You answered the question yourself:
"slick design, ease of use, and the integration from itunes" - sdresser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There's a program that has been doing this for a while and I like it better. It's from the same guy who did iSquint and VisualHub:
http://www.isquint.org/handbrakelite/
It's called Handbrake Lite. Check it out. It's free and easy. - b04155, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the recommendation was to use Mac the Ripper before using Handbrake so that you'll limit the wear on your drive.
- repran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@kevinlquinn you have to choose Mode -> IFO and you are set
- zex18ro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1handbrake for win32
http://www.methodshop.com/2006/02/handbrake-for-windows.shtml - Solafa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very nice little program i am trying it now and in 2 hours and 1 min i will tell you guys if it was able to rip "The Da Vinci Code" top my ipod.
- Justin6512, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1been using this program ever since I got my Mac, it rocks and works great!
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sure they're using the encryption removal that's used in Handbrake itself, hence keeping the name similar. afaik this is almost exactly like handbrake but with limited options on the format you rip to (just for iPod).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have been using Handbrake for quite a while now, mostly nowadays just to rip DVDs and burn, since I now have a new shuffle
- maram500, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is fine and good for Apple die-hards, but what about those who use Windows but bought the iPod because Microsoft's Zune sucks bowling balls through garden hoses? I love my iPod (5G, thank you, purchased online the day it was available) but I use Windows XP. I need something to rip DVDs to my lovely 30GB iPod...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is awesome. I know my PS3 will play files in the .mp4 format, so maybe I'll use this to dump some videos to the hard drive on it.
- mokeyjoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can do the same thing with regular Handbrake as well, plus you have a little more flexibility. You need to know the iPod friendly settings though.
- cyberscape2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's the combination I've been using since I picked up my Video iPod, and it's worked far better than many retail programs.
BTW, I've gotten subtitles and selected audio tracks just fine using DVD Decrypter - it doesn't work with all DVDs, but enough to be functional. - badtz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1interesting. thanks. I wonder what source they are using for the encryption removal .... better than MTR?
- SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I downloaded on of those old out-of-copyright movies and have only watched 2 minutes. Of course I have already seen Night of the Living Dead so I had no motivation.
- flypcide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I understand the whole music scenario with copyrights and whatnot, but for TV Shows I believe its ok to share shows on BT/Usenet because the networks havent released it in a format and price that I think is right."
You have a lot to learn about copyright laws. - danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah I would recommend the full version of HandBrake it rocks and it is really not that difficult to figure out what settings work on the iPod.
- brentzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The key phrase there is "integration with iTunes".
Also, I doubt many people had even heard of the Cowon A2 before you mentioned it. - devoinregress, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have an iPod 5G with RockBox. I have it because it's the smallest 60gig player out their and it's decently priced. The Cowon A2 is awesome but it's way to big. Looking back I might have gone with the Cowon X5 if I knew they had a 60gig version but at the time the iPod looked the best and trust me, I look at the alternatives.
- WarpedWarhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what do i open it with?
- theciuffo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You know, I really don't appreciate the implication of illegally ripping Netflix rentals. We're already fighting an uphill battle against the DMCA for fair-use rights, and comments like that really don't help.
- corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You pop in a DVD, and it will recognize it, allowing you to encode the video into a portable device-friendly format.
- danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1On certain systems it is faster to first rip with MTR then encode using Handbrake because some Mac Pro's and Power Macs are IO bound during encoding so moving the data to the Hard Drive using the MTR increases your encode speed. My iMac Core Duo is pegged at 200% during encode so it won't help me (Time for and upgrade I guess).
- bamafan71, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1how about a dvd converter for a zune? any one got one?
- mayaalouis, on 04/02/2009, -0/+0Best have first try:
