To stay alive.
I need to run my daughter's Insulin Pump (she's a Type I IDDM) utilizing a Windows only software app. If Medtronic Minimed ever makes a Mac OS version of their software then I can say good by to Windows. Until then I need Windows to keep my daughter alive. - iJump, on 10/12/2007, -10/+107...To run windows apps and to test compatibility with IE, of course!. Now, gtfo my internets.
- dave1021, on 10/12/2007, -22/+97"Who the hell would want to use Photoshop with the windows interface..."
Because 1) 95% of the computing world uses PCs, and 2) Photoshop runs like ***** on the new Macs.
Did I type that slow enough for you, fanboy? - dan0368, on 10/12/2007, -10/+77Because windows xp installs are so difficult...
- monkeybutler, on 10/12/2007, -11/+74...Because Macs dont have all the software some people use. And because Photoshop runs better even through parallels than it does "native" on an intel mac. There lots of reasons so relax.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -4/+54My sarcasm meter has exploded!
- Deuterium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+40@lostngone and Cbreaker....
I didn't make the Insulin pump, Minimed Medtronic did. I also can't choose the Insulin pump, I have to use the one my insurance company will pay for. Yes Type I diabetics didn't need Windows when they gave themselves multiple shots daily. Modern diabetic treatment, however, utilizes Insulin pumps to better regulate insulin delivery and more mimic a functioning pancreas. Because the pump is a modern electronic device you use a computer to modify parameters stored in the pump. You also maintain your treatment logbook as well on the computer. After starting on the pump her HbA1c levels are exponentially better than before. Ther's no way in hell we are going back to the old manual system. I can't control what software a specific company uses. I certainly have sent e-mails to the company requesting a MAC OS version be made but other than that I'm stuck using Windows. - Terc, on 10/12/2007, -7/+42Maybe not difficult, but "pain in the ass" would be fitting.
Why it can't collect all the information for you at the beginning of the install (after the format) is beyond me. Does Microsoft think people enjoy sitting there and waiting 10 minutes, then giving the product key, waiting 15 minutes and giving the name of the admin, waiting 10 minutes and giving the time zone, waiting 5 minutes and specifying the type of connection... You see where I'm going with this. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29*COUGH*GAMES*COUGH
- mikev, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24A little off topic, but outside the weather is pretty nice
Just a _little_ off topic, that's all - cakestick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21If I were a celeron, I'd want a MacBook too. ;-)
- smitting, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27As a c# developer running on Mac, I would beg to differ about the pointless comment. VS.Net runs faster on my iMac than it did on the Athlon 2400 I was running before, and now I only need one computer.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20"and why the hell would you want to put Windows on a Mac anyways?"
Because Quicken for the Mac stinks on ice. - ExSlashdotter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16@npsken
the new CS3 suite will be released as a universal binary (native for intel or ppc macs). adobe has said they're not going backwards re-releasing products as universal binary. - lostngone, on 10/12/2007, -16/+30@Deuterium
If you or relying on windows to keep your children alive you need to find another method.
Immediately! - Celeron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Makes want to go out and buy a macbook now.
- npsken, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21Is photoshop cs3 going to be more compatible with the new Intel macs? I was going to buy one as my first mac.
- jcapogna, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13The problem with the current XP install is that it asks some questions halfway through, so you if you start it and come back, you'll find it stopped halfway through waiting for input. They fixed this with Vista, now the install asks all the questions in the beginning.
- feylanks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13i find it is very important to halt the installation process in order to retrieve important information such as time zone....
and network name...
yea. - CritterNYC, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Yes, I believe Adobe said that the next version of Photoshop (presumably CS3) would support the new Intel Macs. Until then, you'll get much better performance running Photoshop within Windows on an Intel-based Mac than you will running it in Mac OSX on that same Mac.
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I suppose this uses a Windows Unattended install? Anyone know for sure how they accomplished this?
- Neem, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11@shaolinpunks
I don't remember the last time a windows update screwed up any of my applications.
If the machine is of vital use to him Im sure he is not looking up porn or going to crooked spyware filled websites.
And Windows always asks before restarting your computer, granted it can get very annoying but it doesn't restart your computer
do you get a tinfoil hat at the apple store when you buy a mac too ? - EXreaction, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Ya, and it takes a whole 20 minutes to install if you make your own XP disk with NLite...
You can make it completely unattended with NLite, and remove the extra crap(like Windows Messenger) as well. - Barlo_Mung, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I don't even believe what you say is true. I installed a printer on my Vista system last night. I plugged in the USB cable and it worked. Nothing else was required.
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Most people don't install Windows on a pc. They buy a pc with Windows already installed. Buying a pc with Windows already installed is easier than buying a Mac and installing Windows on it.
- ExSlashdotter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5apparently you've never been a sysadmin for a large corporation.
Citrix? IIS? WSUS? SMS2003? Active Directory?
Not your average "Click Next, next, next, next, finished" installs... - bdurkin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6can I install mac's osx on my PC?
- mingistech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is a nice feature because you don't have to babysit the installation of windows.
Asking for key information part way thgough the installation has always seemed like a stupid idea.
Vista gets this all outta the way at the begining.... like all installations should. - offcenter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Parallels is a 'killer app' for Apple -- it definitely changes the ground rules.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Perfect timing. I just installed Parallels and Windows XP last weekend.
- smeager, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@duke_nate
I use that same finger to right-click on my mac too. I guess we have somehting in common. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"I hope that was sarcasm, because I'm yet to find a website that says "Designed only for IE" - mathewjm
Funny, I ran into just such a site a couple of days ago (and I'm not being sarcastic). Pretty pathetic for 2006. - jwdav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's significantly different than an IBM unattended install. All you have to do is give it a Windows serial number and it sets up accounts & shared networking based on your Mac's settings. I set up a machine last night and was really happy with the results.
- opticrealm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3At the Intel Developers Forum, Parallel's said that they would try to have version 3 out around Christmas time. They are trying to incorporate 3d accelerated graphics into version 3. They specifically mentioned that you would be able to play games like "Half Life." I'm not sure which version of half life they were referring too, but it'd would be pretty neat either way.
They would probably provide an upgrade to version 3 for existing version 2 users for a discounted rate. - bigfatphony, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It hasn't been difficult to install Windows for a while now: http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/
Macs are lovely and Mac supporters certainly don't need to hang their hats on inaccurate articles. - johntkucz, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10I've been a mac user since I was 2 and did research for the Mac/PC debate to prove that macs are better, but and ALL of this rivalry between macs and PCs is adsurd! They're the exact same machine now!!! Hardrives are all Fujitsu (or some japanese manufacturer), CPUS are all Intel, peripherals are third-party companies....Have you used Windows Vista and Mac OS 10.4? The GUIs are identical and both efficient-- with the dock and windows task bar, behavior, a DOS core, a UNIX core, they're both command line interaces. Personally, for high-end graphics tasks, macs are easier, but windows has faster features and more of them, making it ideal for almost everything other than graphics. Mac culture, I've witnessed, is kind of in "their own bubble" . I'm sorry, if you spend so much time believing their exist HUGE differences between the current windows and mac os platform, you've got serious blinders on. Anyone who understand fundamentals of OS design, interface accessibility, and compatibility instantly sees that Vista and Panther are practically twin.
They're both great OSes ,but PC/Apple debate has evolved into, literally, a discrepency of brand logos, which most of us computer techies have little/no interest in, in the first place! - rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ brstilson
Not in Parallels. There's currently no direct access to the GPU, so any 3D games have to run with software 3D rendering. That's what Boot Camp is for. - EXreaction, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually, a Mac running Windows can still be called a Mac. Since it is still Mac hardware. ;-)
Though, if it is running Windows it is no different than a PC. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ ExSlashdotter
You don't have a systems imaging server? - Barlo_Mung, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It may be Apple hardware but it's just that Apple now makes PC hardware.
- duke_nate, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5And with a pc all i have to do is right click with one finger. It also happens to be the finger I flash at fanboys every chance i get :-)
- ExSlashdotter, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7@slovenian
Ever worked in an IT dept that supported 3000+ windows desktops? Apparently not.
I've got a bit more experience than my 1337 h4x0r b0x at home to base my statements off of. - redxii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There is no "DOS core" in NT, 2000, XP, or Vista. There is only a DOS virtual machine, for the running of DOS or 16-bit apps, because such apps require direct access to the hardware and NT doesn't allow that.
- xpaladin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's a trap!
- anonym41414, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No, so it can run both Mac OS X and Windows and DO 2x more.
- negativefx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4well put john. i agree completely.
also, christina ftw. - EXreaction, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Smart people get something decent to stop it all...
Like Firefox, a nice Firewall like Sygate, and a good Anti-Virus like Avast or AVG, and then just defragment the hdd every week or so. And as long as they don't install a bunch of stupid crap(to the people that install all those spyware/virus ridden free crap(crap as in like free poker and casino stuff) apps) they would be fine forever...
And the dumb ones(your *most*) wouldn't know how to reinstall XP or even that they could reinstall it...
So no, *most* Windows users do not reformat every few months. - joevill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2EXACTLY!!
