- jroussell, on 01/30/2009, -13/+52i have been a mac user for 5 years now but i installed the win 7 beta and am completely hooked. but don't take my word for it. try it yourself. its free, for now at least.
- BZKyle, on 01/31/2009, -1/+22Because you use a Mac, you can't use Windows? Wait.. what?
- jb0nd38372, on 01/31/2009, -4/+16I don't understand how installing an OS makes the hardware degrade. You say you have a 2k Mac? I say you paid way too much for the hardware. Even If you paid $300.00 for a copy of OSX, still you could replicate the hardware down to the bios for about 1,000.
Whats the big damn deal about a macintosh? Its intel hardware with nvidia graphics and an efi bios. Sure your using osx, but thats just a bsd based operating system, basically linux.
Windows 7 is an improvement over vista, but not as much as everyone is hyping it up to be. Vista has matured very very well over the past year. After the release of SP1 everything ran smooth.
Every OS has it's advantages and disadvantages, Lets see OSX play crysis, hell lets see OSX play any graphic rich game, there aren't many. On the flip side you wont see Vista or XP doing alot of desktop publishing or MAC / OSX specific chores.
Anyone out there wanna take my Vista x64 desktop on with their mac setup? I'll take your challenge. I'm not knocking mac's at all, just saying that fanboys need to get off the acid and come back to reality, your machines are not the holy grail of computing. - soopafly, on 01/31/2009, -1/+12What??? All Mac users own 360s?
- badtiki, on 01/31/2009, -1/+11OMG dugg down by a fanboy - people need to get a life - I use many OS's in my day to day, I like OSX but im not devoted to it even though I have a new iMac - I use Windows at work, I use VMs to test my websites on different environments on many OS's - and I use Linux for my servers - so again GET A LIFE Fanboys - Digging people down just for mentioning a preference is childish, its time to move out of your mothers basement and grow some balls.
- artfuldodga, on 01/31/2009, -4/+14bringing out the full potential of a Apple PC
- 6minuteabs, on 01/31/2009, -6/+16Lying is fun sometimes, isn't it?
- ocpmture, on 01/31/2009, -0/+9I just run it in Bootcamp. There is always a noticeable lag with VMs, and 3D acceleration (for the Aero UI) never worked for me.
- Gizza, on 01/31/2009, -4/+13Hey guess what, with a Windows PC you can do anything a Mac or Windows PC can do too, including games.
- AzzX, on 01/31/2009, -7/+16This is one way to turn a $2000 Mac into a $300 PC.
I prefer the 64bit iterations myself mind you. - adikt, on 01/31/2009, -0/+8/me hands guytoronto a tissue.
Seems you got some ***** in your throat. - dandonia, on 01/31/2009, -5/+12Care to say what features you are enjoyinh more than leapord?
(I am not doubting you - I am actually curious about it) - jroussell, on 01/31/2009, -0/+7sorry if i seem full of ***** but i am writing this from my macbook with windows 7 installed as the primary os. i love leopard and i will agree with those that say windows 7 is a rip of leopard. there is nothing new that leopard doesnt have. but i think windows 7 does some things better. stacks is much more practical on the win side, i use the gadgets more and they don't drain my resources as much as widgets do on the mac side. i just feel win 7 runs better on my first gen macbook. but look at my comment history and you will see i have been more of a mac fan then ever for windows. i openly laughed at anyone running vista. but in all honesty i had xp installed as a second os because osx is a limited os. its great for basic computing needs and professional level design and media things, but as a pirates os it is very lacking. i am currently living outside the us but to watch all the channel i know and love i have to do it on my windows side. to watch nfl and nba games without using justin.tv or ustream, which both suck, i have to use windows. and for many other illegal activities i have to use windows. i said what the ***** and upgraded my xp to win 7 and i actually am hooked and made it my primary os. that isn;t to say i won;t go back to osx once win 7 has problems, but at the time being i love it. sorry for being a ***** mac fanboy and not hating on everything windows. i am a reasonable person and if there is a product i like i will use it. even if it doesnt have a apple logo on it.
- bwmdiym, on 01/31/2009, -1/+6True I used a mac for 3 years and sold my mbp in October and built a bad ass pc running vista x64 and the way it looks right now I cant ever see my self going back to mac. You can do so much more with a pc when I had a mac I felt like i was limited in the software realm, even office('08) runs like crap in mac osx leopard and I my primary use was for school so it was slightly self defeating.
- dandonia, on 01/31/2009, -3/+8Tough crowd - a guy can't ask a question without been dugg down.
- ez12a, on 01/31/2009, -3/+8lol...and "chess" on OSX 10.4 was pretty crappy as well. I dont remember exactly what it had...was it a huge memory leak?
- sneaker98, on 01/31/2009, -2/+7"the company doesn’t seem too view that potential Mac market very seriously."
If you're not even going to bother with proper grammar and spelling, I'm not going to bother reading the article. - Dotcommer, on 01/31/2009, -2/+7Now you're DEFINITELY lying. Everyone knows macs don't have solitaire.
- inactive, on 01/31/2009, -0/+4There is indeed no 3D acceleration with VMs... There is some primitive Direct X support in VMWare (Even under Mac/Linux!) but it's not even enough to run Aero.
- drikle, on 01/31/2009, -0/+4That is too much. I run it on my eeePc with 1gig. And it uses a little bit more than have of it. even when running visual studio...
- badtiki, on 01/31/2009, -6/+10I installed it today via VM Fusion, the install was super fast and it runs pretty decent - still not going to replace OS X but it looks like MS may be headed in the right direction as long as they don't overload it with unneeded features that requires a min. of 8 gig to run notepad!
- doctordbx, on 01/31/2009, -0/+3I think you missed the point. Running it inside VirtualBox makes it perform like a $300 PC.
- damndj, on 01/31/2009, -1/+42 gigs
- inactive, on 01/31/2009, -1/+4I have been using windows 7 on my new macbook. It kills my battery life.
It is quite good for games, and they have done some things in control panel like better font management and a software calibration utility. It doesn't support stuff like your sudden motion sensor, and other data safety features on a mac, and it still needs to be defragged.
But really?
What's so special about it? Most of the stuff they have added has been in leopard since panther.
When snow leopard comes out, I'm sure we will see a super lightweight OS which supports some amazing performance enhancements which will ***** kick windows 7. Just because performance wise windows 7 is on par with leopard. Now when that scale tips, I should expect leopard to be back on top.
I agree it's the best version of windows yet, and I have been using it, but it's still not on par with leopard.
"One click Apache server anyone?" - inactive, on 01/31/2009, -0/+3L4D works well on my unibody macbook. You should give it a try.
- abrasion, on 01/31/2009, -1/+3I just wanna use 'hackintosh' on my PC, (yes, I'll buy a damned copy)
I have an ATI 4870 but the GTX 2XX series don't work either...
I'm not a mac fan at all but I'd be happy to try something new and Ubuntu while improving slowly is ... well REALLY slowly improving, In about 30 years it might be awesome.
Plus with MacOS I can run Windows XP applications, with say 6 or 8gb of ram and a decent CPU, I can do anything a mac or a windows PC can do, besides gaming - it's a win win, especially with one re-boot for games.
Love to try it but no top of the line GPU's are supported, I guess apple don't care though, the high end crowd are a small niche. - inactive, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2I have noticed that people have said you can't install it in bootcamp.
That's simply not true. I have been trying it out on my unibody macbook. It works.
And it plays games much better than vista. - abrasion, on 02/01/2009, -0/+2Oh ***** off, I've been using Windows probably since before you were born.
I just want to try something new, Vista is a ***** and XP is eventually going to die.
Being all 'exclusive' in the Windows club is over and I hate Mac OS whiners, - but you can't have this 'Windows is the only solution' ***** anymore.
I bet 99% of us pricks on Digg are the same, this iswhat we need from a PC
Torrents
Video playback
Video sharing
Chat
Web
Email (gmail likely on the web anyhow)
Remote desktop
Samba shares
Word processing / spreadsheets.
Games.
So, if I can do 99% of that in a different OS which is becomign more popular and well since Vista is in my opinion, rubbish - I'll at least try OSx so I can re-boot in to XP for my Crysis and L4D sessions.
Guess what, Windows isn't going to be king in 15 years, I'll bet anything on it, that time is dwindling.
*no, I don't own a mac*
*no, I don't run linux*
This is simple logic. - kedohmen, on 01/31/2009, -1/+3i meant to say, "started over with XP"
- digitalpencil, on 01/31/2009, -0/+2i bought my computer to stick it to 'big, evil microsoft'? i never knew!!
- pcronin, on 01/31/2009, -1/+3Really? We need an "article" about this?
Anyone with the inkling to actually attempt to download and install a beta of *any* OS already knows how to create a virtual machine in their favorite program.
This can only lead to more of the "my computer can't open Word files, I have to drop out of school now" kind of users.
And what "download hoops" is this guy talking about? I grabbed the beta from MS's website with firefox once on a vista pc, and once on my iMac (pc's hard drive decided to die... sigh) - Sonic84, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1be aware that OSX VirtualBox version 2.1.2 has performance issues, check out the VB forums...
- badtiki, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1VM Fusion will do the trick
- abrasion, on 02/01/2009, -1/+2No, fail.
- bwmdiym, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1No I understood what he was saying I was replying to the comment from Jbond3372. Any OS you run as a virtual box is going to run like crap end of story.
- ethamajin, on 01/31/2009, -2/+3Running it in a VM doesn't do it justice. I have it running natively on my macbook and it's great. When I ran it in fusion or virtual PC it didn't run well - but probably mostly because of the lack of a discrete graphics card.
- mrBitch, on 02/01/2009, -0/+1@ overninek RE: " It's always fun watching Apple fanboys coming to Microsoft's defense whenever the topic of Xbox vs PS3 vs Wii comes up."
Wow, way to make a stupid statement.
Wii is far superior to Xbox & PS3 when it comes to "casual" fun party games ( Wii beats PS3, and Xbox EASILY).
When it comes to hardware specs, PS3 is far superior.
Microsoft had to write off a billion dollars to deal with the 1-in-3 failure rate of Xbox consoles (due to overheating).
If you didn't know any of the above facts, consider yourself now SERVED. - Philbert, on 01/31/2009, -4/+5Just get a PC and be happy already.
- mrBitch, on 02/01/2009, -0/+1@ mrtherapist RE: " I have been using windows 7 on my new macbook. It kills my battery life."
Actually, Windows 7 is a MASSIVE improvement on previous Windows, when it comes to power management.
With that said, I still notice that the battery drain on a laptop is far worse when running Win7 as opposed to OSX, but when you compare Win7 to XP and Vista, then Win7 HAS IMPROVED. - westyvw, on 01/31/2009, -1/+2I have it running on my laptop using Virtual Box on Linux. I gave it 512 Megs. I am running Windows Server 2008 with Visual Studio as well, including running several data bases for training and testing (the databases).
It works great in that environment. I think this is an example of what they have done to improve Windows 7 over Vista. That said, its still Windows. The Linux box is still my preferred environment and is miles ahead of windows. - mr138, on 02/01/2009, -0/+1I use Vista; feel free to openly laugh if you want, I don't care what you think.
- coachdriver, on 01/31/2009, -1/+2Insightful.
Download Windows 7
Create an image
Install Windows 7
Can't wait for the next episode... - pradaaddict, on 01/31/2009, -0/+1how much RAM would someone with experience running Win7 through a virtual engine recommend?
- mrBitch, on 02/01/2009, -1/+1@ abrasion, RE: " ... I've been using Windows probably since before you were born.
I just want to try something new, Vista is a ***** and XP is eventually going to die."
I know exactly what you mean. This is where I was at a few years ago.
I installed Gentoo and Ubuntu and was so impressed with how far Linux had progressed that I wanted to compare OSX as well.
After a lot of pain and suffering setting up a Hackintosh, I was suitably impressed with OSX that I finally bought a MacBook Pro as my laptop replacement.
If you are at the stage of wanting to trial and install OSX on your PC, the best bet at the moment is to use the OSX iAtkos Kernel. - mr138, on 02/01/2009, -1/+1You're being sarcastic right...?
- np0731, on 02/04/2009, -0/+0Come on people. The world of technology doesn't advance by bickering. get what you are happy with, and don't tell other people what to use
for example, i'm buying a pc that has all equivalent hardware as a macbook pro, because i want windows 7 and mac leopard (hackintosh) at a price i can afford. because i am good with pc's and mac's and adobe cs4 hasn't shown any real differences between operating systems, i can still use windows 7 for graphic design in a good computer. besides, being fluent in multiple operating systems is something the next generation of consumers will all be boasting, so you might as well start now.
Another example is someone who gets a mac for office use. their office suite is good too.
but if u don't want to do that, you don't have to. The fact that Apple is slowly gaining market power prevents monopolization even though Apple won't pass 10 percent for at least a few years. When no one can monopolize, the consumer wins. I know MS fanboys might say that Apple is trying to monopolize multi-touch, but they won't win the suit, and their multi-touch patent only applies to cell phones, so stop crying about the big bad apple monopoly.
And apple fanboys need to stop crying about the evil ms empire. If apple wanted to gain market power (sarcasm), theyd bundle their os with cheaper computers too, like dell and hp and asus (by the way those brands have hardware that is just as good as apple hardware.) - NellyG, on 01/31/2009, -1/+1Dugg for reference of girl that dropped out of school because she couldn't open her word docs.
- inactive, on 02/02/2009, -1/+1No, more like covering your brand new Ferrari with *****!
