- fowleryo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3does this work with a firewire drive as well?
- JuyLe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bootcamp works here, but nice tips, i keep it !
- tmrini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2From what I recall of looking into this months ago, Firewire could work in theory. You'd just have to do similar modifications to the XP install disc. The reason there's no tutorial today I think is that Firewire just isn't as common in the PC world.

Personally, if I installed Boot Camp, and partitioned space for Windows ... I'd use it. It wouldn't be "unused." If it was going to be unused, I wouldn't do it in the first place.
Good tip though. I like the idea of keeping Windows on my keychain for when I need it. - golddigga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2why don't you just use bootcamp?
- georgemoore13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If anyone gets this set up, I am curious if Parallels will boot off of this drive...
- tmrini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, I did this myself months ago (shortly after BootCamp came out) because I couldn't partition my internal drive (it being in use) and I found the real hard part being burning a bootable on Intel Mac, modified to support USB root, XP install disc. Kicking myself now for not finishing the google pages howto I had done, but I stopped since it wasn't really any different from the regular "Install XP on a USB disk" HOWTOs for regular PCs.

- Sefirosu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, Bootcamp requires at least a 5gb partition on the internal drive to boot Windows AFAIK. With this you don't need it as you can put all of Windows on the external drive. For me, however, disconnecting the internal drive on my MBP is kinda hard to do (no easy way like with the regular MacBook) so this tutorial is somewhat disappointing in that regard, but for desktop machines it's nice that there is a way to do it.
Someone pointed out in the blog's comments that it could be feasible using VMware and direct drive access to install Windows on it. I might try this out when I get home with VMware Fusion, that may work to bypass the first few stages of installation... - hackmiester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, that's you. I use something like this to have Windows only at LAN parties. I use Linux the rest of the time, so why have a ginormous Windows partition taking up space on my internal disk?
- smhill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Neat idea (keychain drive), but they aren't big enough.
- smhill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am curious as well. Bootcamp works just fine, I don't really see a point in all this.
- smhill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Again, I don't see the point. 5gb (though mine is set at 15) is 5gb regardless of where you put it. My primary machine is a MBP. I don't carry around an external. Bootcamp + Parallels allows to go either direction with either booting into windows or running a VM. 15gb is nothing.
- FKnight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Except for this one:

- TheSalmonThief, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Nice use for that Vista Ultimate torrent that just finished. =D
- deanlowe, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1It'd be better if it was "How to install Mac OSX to a Windows PC".
- iigloo, on 10/12/2007, -12/+41. Get a mac
