Install Third-Party Applications on Your iPhone
lifehacker.com — In less than two-months time, a persistent and merry band of iPhone hackers have been pushing out application after killer application for the iPhone, and hacking your iPhone to install those applications has become dead simple. Today I'll show you how to download, install, and manage third-party software on your iPhone

- superjunaid, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4awesome quick tutorial and a selection of sweet applications for your iPhone. I used AppTapp Installer, makes life a lot easy!
- Kwinti, on 10/10/2007, -9/+2Is it just me, or is this article a little late to the party?
old news. . . - over90000, on 10/10/2007, -14/+5Too bad all the 3rd party applications suck.
- stukdog, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9When I read this on Lifehacker I was just about to try it but thought I'd wait to see what happens tomorrow. No reason to get it all hacked only to restore it tomorrow for a software update.
- JJP0223, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That is the same exact thing that ran through my head. Hope we get an actual useful update this time.
- historyfool24, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1I would not say the third party apps suck but they are lacking. I want something awesome to be on iPhone, but I dont know yet..come on there has to be something cooler then Lights Out and Terminal
- TheYoshi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I actually am pretty impressed with some of the stuff out there the two IM clients are showing promise and iPhone dock is downright cool: http://cre.ations.net/creation/dock (video on page)
- badjoke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I didn't like the dock at all. I found it much too hard to easily pull up. I'd either get the iPod, or nothing. Greatly loving Summerboard though.

- econoar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If only I could figure out how to install the NES roms...
- TheKrillr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Assuming you're using Installer.app, make sure you have OpenSSH installed. Connect your iPhone to a wifi connection and ssh into the iPhone using the username "root" and the password "dottie". do the following while SSH'd in:
mkdir -p Media/ROMs/NES
exit
Now, take your NES rom and do this:
scp mygame.nes root@myiphoneip:Media/ROMs/NES/
and of course use the same password as before, "dottie". If you have changed your root password on the iphone, of course use it instead. But I assume you haven't. - dansmeek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0also, you can install sftp on your iphone, and then login to your iphone via an ftp client (whatever you want). and do exactly what the krillr said. either way, I believe you will need to install SSH to do this. you can also change your password for root pretty damn easily which i'd recommend you do. simply get the "master.passwd....." off your iphone, and use a perl script to encrypt a password, replace two lines of data in the file, and replace the old "master.pw" with the new one. I am fearful that a lot of people don't change their root password leaving their iPhone susceptible to any type of hack.....
- badjoke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Or you could use iFuntastic (if mac) or iBrickr (if PC) to browse your iPhone's directories and simply place the ROMs in /var/root/Media/ROMs/NES.

- 7of7, on 10/10/2007, -6/+3You have to love when it's newsworthy that a product actually runs third party code. Typical Apple move, release a product totally lacking in features and ways to implement features and then rely on your marketing department to sell enough of the product that people start trying to hack features on out of sheer frustration.
- virtualball, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4Yeah... I mean it's typical Apple move when all iRiver/Creative/Zune/etc. all can't run 3rd party code.
And I don't think people hacked it out of "sheer frustration," you obviously don't know why hackers hack.- Atomic1fire, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3hackers hack out of curiosity
they wanna see how something works
then what they can do with it that it wasn't intended for

- over90000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1iriver, creative, zune aren't smart phones. you're better off comparing with nokia or sony erricsson.
- afruff23, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Not to mention all the Windows Mobile apps.

- schoate09, on 10/10/2007, -6/+2Aww geeze, not this ***** again.
- badjoke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Please just change your profile options to not-show iphone stories? It'll save us from the bitching. Digg doesn't cater to individuals, but many.
- schoate09, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hey, *****, I want to read Apple news, but not the iPhone ***** every few seconds.

- murty, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3ahhh i look forward to the day the iphone comes out in australia :-(
- jakdracula, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Installation crashed my iPhone and forced me into 'recovery' mode, which means I lost all of my great pictures.
- Spuy767, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5That's what you get for not syncing them to your computer first. This ***** isn't foolproof. When I was helping develop the bash shell, I musthave had to "recover" my iPhone twenty times.
- lip167, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0hey jakdracula - did you ever get it to work? crashed me too & i had to factory restore. did you try again?

- digitallysick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1i couldnt get the nes to play sound bleh, so i gave up, i haven't really found a useful 3rd party app yet, im sure i will in time.
- Spuy767, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Let's see, Mobile Chat, Voice Recorder, NES emulator, ncftp, bash shell, summerboard, need I go on, there are plenty of useful apps out there.
- dansmeek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8yeah dupe but..... for those that have not kept up to date with installer.app, some cool apps are now here.
springboard: this extends the "interface" so that you can scroll up and down, and thus have unlimited icons. And no "pages" like the stupid iFuntastic.
apolloIM: has become a pretty good AIM program. they are close to an update that will make it more ubiquitious, such that, when your iPhone is off, you will still receive AIMs.
terminal: obviously. so you know.... you can hack i guess
dock: if you have tons of apps.... this is like the dock on the apple os x. It always appears on your iphone (you can barely see it) in the lower right hand corner. It's like a off yellow, but it's hard to notice. You drag your hand from the lower right hand corner to the center, and a list of all open applications pops up so you can browse between them. This feature stays running while using any program on the iphone.
favorite games are lights off (pretty hard), and i guess mine sweeper.
the iphone is capable of having much cooler games though. when programmers start understanding how to use the whole "tilt" code a little better (not to mention that I believe the iPhone is capable of 3d graphics, even though it lacks a dedicated graphic chip), then they will use some innovative ways to make gameplay "superfun." for instance, imagine a driving simulator where you turn left and turn right by actually just leaning the screen a little right and little left.
whether you like the iphone or not, you have to give these programmers some props for what they have been able to do in such a short period of time.
(also, to get the nes sound to play, you have to use the terminal to turn the iphone sound off, you essentially make a macro in ssh for "soundon" and "soundoff" and run it *manually* when playing the NES. this website has good instructions on how to do it:
http://www.hacktheiphone.com/iphone_install_nintendo_emulator_mac.html
eventually it will be automated.)
also, i don't know why you guys are losing data when installing this stuff. when i restore my iPhone to factory settings (which I have done about 30 to 50 times) i get all my pictures, text messages, emails, phone calls, etc. back. the *only* thing I lose are the passwords for my wi-fi networks, and my voicemail password (and I guess the pictures I take with the iPhone if I havent' synced it).
Anyway, longass comment, but installer.app is really the best thing for the iPhone. Don't use that iFuntastic. It's a bunch of hacked code put together and gives you a lot of problems. If you have installed iFuntastic, that is likely the reason for the iphone being forced into recovery mode.
okay, digg me down - geneshifter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Does any know for certain if I use this and install 3rd party apps that I would void my iPhone warranty? Or, if new firmware versions would break the phone if these apps are installed? I just want some concrete information about this and nothing I've found addresses this. Some of these apps would really be useful to me.
- geneshifter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Why digg me down? I just want some simple information and this seems to be a good place to get it with all the tech junkies here.
- lip167, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If it helps, i totally crashed my iphone trying to install apptapp but restored easily enough thru itunes.
- badjoke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I believe it does void your warranty, but you can just restore your phone if you ever needed to take your phone into an apple store.
When new firmware comes out, you are (or have been) required to reformat your phone, then update. After the update you can re-sync your contacts, mail, calender, etc again and download the apps again.
It seems pretty solid right now. I'd start with getting your hands on Installer.app, and trying out some apps. They can be easily installed and uninstalled from your phone (updated too.)

- iXneonXi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Does Installer.app allow you to change the provider or do you still need a hardware hack for that?
- dansmeek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1still need at&t. the software hack to unlock the at&t as the sole provider is not readily available. the iphone development community has been more focused on learning how to "program" with the iphone, and make cool applications. There was a select few who had only one goal: to unlock the iphone so you could use on T-Mobile (or other providers in euro). unlocking the phone completely is a little more complicated, but I would imagine that a "good" software hack will be available for free within the month. And obviously, installer.app will be the first place to find it.
Another problem is, most people who have an iphone, already have AT&T service or have already switched. So there is not a lot of incentive to produce the hack. The demand for the hack is more prevalent overseas. I think when one of these hackers (who are selling the code) reveals the "hard part" (can't remember exactly what it is, but it was one of the reasons the hardware hack was easier.... since you could manually replace memory locations, etc.) which is essentially just allowing access to a more secure part of the iphone (which has to have been figured out if these software hacks first), then some programmer will make the iphone 'complete' unlock totally available.
However..... I do think apple is going to be pressured by at&t to somehow stop this. I don't know how..... but AT&T can't be happy about this.
Future models of the iphone will likely have a more complex unlocking mechanism. I don't think apple will ever pull a microsoft though and - say - make your phone stop working entirely if it can't be verified. Or connect to the internet every 15 seconds to ensure you have a legit iphone.

- scotticus, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3Why does this need to be a hack?
Best phone evar my ass...- MBX1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2it doesn't necessarily need hacks. the phone is stunning without any additional thirdparty apps/ widgets already. who needs nes-games? some do maybe. so for them being able to put this "app" on the iphone is cool.
many like to individualize their phones.

- badjoke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You can go to http://iphone.nullriver.com to download and install the installer straight to the phone. From there you can just install apps.
