- DonCarcharo, on 09/16/2009, -13/+43I've built two different Hackintoshes over the past year and, quite honestly, the experience just isn't up to par. Yes the hardware is much cheaper, the performance is pretty good and the stability is fine once you get going. My $500 Dell performed respectably against my order of magnitude-more-expensive Mac Pro and in total it might have panicked once. My Dell Mini 9 was speedy, stable and it filled a gap that Apple will probably never address (the low cost netbook).
So why did I give them both up for pedestrian Windows 7 installs? For one, system updates are a major pain. The Dell Mini 9 had the advantage of being an "official" unofficial platform. By that I mean there's prepackaged updates just for the mini. However they don't always work out so well and when things go bad you often have to start completely over. The Dell Tower was another story. I had to torrent arcane patches, hunt down hacked drivers and obscure utilities. It was a nightmare - so much so that I eventually had 3 different boot partitions to offset downtimes.
But perhaps the biggest reason I gave up Mac OS X for Windows 7 on those two machines is that, let's face it, Windows 7 has closed the gap to the point where it wasn't worth the effort of hacking together a non supported OS. I've already got three real Macs, and for simple web browsing Windows 7 is perfectly fine. So in my opinion, the hackintosh thing is a neat experiment and nothing more. Like to tinker? Give it a whirl. But it's not a real Mac experience by any means. After all you give up the one thing that makes the Mac so wonderful - it just works. - cyrusuncc, on 09/16/2009, -6/+35*random quote on why PC is better than MAC
- RudeTurnip, on 09/16/2009, -3/+23For the cost of the hardware involved (and sound is still flakey), I'd rather get a Mac Mini and enjoy the small form factor.
- Elranzer, on 09/16/2009, -1/+16*random Linux comment that gets assaulted by both Mac and Windows fanboys, thus bringing two opposing factions together
- DonCarcharo, on 09/16/2009, -1/+12It's cliche but it's applicable. I use a lot of different environments on a regular basis. Right now I'm running Mac OS X, Windows XP, Windows 7 & Ubuntu across my 6 systems (it's like an illness). Traditionally I use my Macs for work as they're very stable and require virtually no maintenance. I see them as appliances, really. Conversely Windows requires a bit more effort on my part but that effort has benefits - a huge library of software, peripherals, games and the amazing Windows Media Center. I'd then suggest Ubuntu is essentially a hobby but I don't need anymore negative diggs today...
Back to my point, as I see it there's little benefit of having a Mac that requires hands-on maintenance and configuration. To me, at least, that's one of the platform's strongpoints. That said if you don't mind getting your hands dirty, there's nothing inherently wrong with a hackintosh. - CoreyTamas, on 09/16/2009, -3/+13*generic insult about PC's, unwarranted personal comment, randomly misspelled word

- chazuk, on 09/16/2009, -2/+9My hackintosh is sticking with Leopard for now but my iMac is loving Snow Leopard.

- br0ken1128, on 09/17/2009, -0/+5I have a regular pc and i have snow leopard installed.. it was no issue at all .. i didn't have to jump through hoops ..
I have two drives in my pc, one has snow leopard (which I just updated to the latest version without a hitch through the normal update) ... and the other drive is XP Pro ... the only trick for that is I can't do a normal dual boot.. i have to press F12 and select the boot drive .. but that's hardly an inconvenience..
having the right hardware is the trick .. I have a retail copy of the snow leopard + ilife + iwork bundle running.. no torrents involved - fury420, on 09/16/2009, -1/+6wait, isn't that article 2 years old and talking about specific hardware faults in some iMacs sold in the 2 month period after launch that were covered under Apple's warranty?
I was referring to those who pick up a 1920 x 1080 24" TN LCD for $200 and claim it's equivalent to the 1920 x 1200 24" S-IPS panel in the iMac (which would retail for $450+) - rabidjester, on 09/16/2009, -0/+5That's one of the better mobos to use with Leopard, 10.6 shouldn't be much different.
- MacParrot, on 09/16/2009, -1/+6Yes good old "fanboy". The typical type of response from someone with either no real argument or a douchebag. In your case I'll make an exception and say both.
- rquast, on 09/17/2009, -0/+5And you don't have sales without a EULA. Go figure?
- Balanced, on 09/17/2009, -1/+5Desk space is at a premium for some people...

- MacParrot, on 09/16/2009, -0/+4Yup...I called that one
- fury420, on 09/16/2009, -0/+4yes, gigabyte P35 based boards should work fine, you just have a slightly different realtek audio chipset, northbridge & possibly ethernet chipset and thus may need slightly different kexts or whatever to get em all working flawlessly. this article jus mentions the realtek kexts, so I'd assume SL works with the ethernet/SATA by default
Insanelymac.com has install guides for the P35 based boards, I'd check them out for more info - a2fan, on 09/16/2009, -0/+4Wow, he got banned in a hurry.
- vtnerd, on 09/16/2009, -0/+4To answer my own question (using fury420's direction), here is a guide for the GA-P35-DS4 (and several other P35, X38, EP45 and EP35 Gigabyte boards) : http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtop ...
Just in case anyone wanted to know. - MacParrot, on 09/16/2009, -0/+4While EFI-X has been pretty much discredited as being a swindle (I'm glad I didn't try it and I was very tempted), they do have a really good hardware guide for motherboards, graphics cards, ect that should work with OS X on a build your own.
- MacParrot, on 09/16/2009, -0/+4@a2fan...
And I'll miss him so - vtnerd, on 09/16/2009, -0/+3tyvm
- upeneff, on 09/17/2009, -0/+3Uhhh, who would ever drag their mini around like a laptop? I would have never done that in all my… ok, it has been done.
And it's actually quite nice knowing that you can plop your computer into a PS2 Slim bag and have space left over. - LostSoul83, on 09/17/2009, -0/+3As long as it ain't made by Microsoft, it can't possibly be a bad thing!
- Evi1d33d, on 09/16/2009, -1/+4It's all about the drivers.
- br0ken1128, on 09/17/2009, -0/+3Ps. the only glitch I had was getting my creative live 5.1 working .. my onboard audio has always worked, but I wanted to get my surround sound working... a simple google search for the chipset yielded a driver... installed it, rebooted and was set.
- canthraxp, on 09/17/2009, -0/+3*Trying to disguise as a normal user comment, then provide a link to a completely unrelated product or website, but failing miserably at both.

- vtnerd, on 09/16/2009, -1/+4So anyone know if it would also work on a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4? I'm not paying the Apple hardware tax, but I wouldn't mind having the OS around on another partition.
Please no lmgtfy either, I can do that on my own. Just thought I'd ask since this article uses a newer, P45 chipset, Gigabyte board and someone may have already tried it out on the board I have. - Darph.Bobo, on 09/17/2009, -0/+3Oh the irony, if you want to see the real '***** chucking ape' just look in your bathroom mirror.

- thesportoflife, on 09/16/2009, -6/+8Hackintosh rhymes with macintosh :o

That's exactly the same conclusion my work colleague came to after spending weeks getting OSX to work on his Dell mini.
It's fun to stuff around and get it working, but it's no MacBook... - digitalpencil, on 09/17/2009, -0/+2RAM from apple's more expensive?!! BY GOD! we'd never have known if it wasn't for you webchimp.
quickly! copypasta this into every thread mentioning apple, even if they're discussing the actual fruit. the world must know!! - ineversleep, on 09/17/2009, -0/+2Yeah, Dell is cheaper. I built a badass gaming machine on their website, noticed how awesome the price was, then noticed it forced me to go with 800MHz RAM. This is why Apple is more expensive, they don't ***** you over on the small details.
- Angostura, on 09/17/2009, -1/+3Suggestion that you it's a Mac, not a MAC.
