- trghpy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22"Attractive things work better," says Don Norman, who was vice president of advanced technology at Apple from 1993 to 1998. "When you wash and wax a car, it drives better, doesn't it? Or at least feels like it does."
So true...
I've never wanted to throw my macbook across the room...
But that *****.. It had it coming! - jermm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Single Page:

(sorry for comment abuse...I HATE MULTI-PAGE ARTICLES) - thepromise, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12That was an absolutely fascinating article. It's nice to see that more scholarly articles like this hit the front page every once in a while, not just "Apple Rocks and Windows Sucks"... I was amazed at how much time Apple puts into the conceptual stages of their products, but doing so really makes sense. It also makes me wonder why more companies haven't adopted that philosophy. Measure twice, cut once... a wise man once told me that.
- M4cb0y, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"So in other words it may not work better but because it is pretty people are stupid enough to that that it does.
Apple's philosophy in a nutshell."
No... their philosophy is that you're going to be happier with the product that you're using if it's apparent there's actually been some thought put into it.
If you think design is nothing but making something "look pretty", you are much more of an idiot than I thought you were before. - bittie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Not to sound like a dick...but what did Apple have between 1993-1998 that was beautiful?
- tnoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@bittie
Apple used a better and more attractive beige than the PC camp during that time. - robharper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"The difference between BJ and AJ, Before and After Jobs, is not the process..."
Wait, stop. WTF? - HunterTV, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@gamebittk
For that joke to get dugg up, it has to be in caps: THIS IS MADNESS! - nufoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@bittie
Apple's Earlier beige designs was a test bed of there modern cousins.... look at the PowerMac 9600 had an "flip-open" Case you could upgrade the machine in minutes [CPU,PCI,RAM,HD] check out this VR : http://www.everymac.com/images/multimedia/easytower_case.mov - phillydrifter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I too thought it was an excellent article, and it goes to show you how Apple is leading the pack when it comes to industrial design; I mean look at how many companies tried to increase their sales after the original iMacs were released, everything was being released with 5 candy-colored covers, like the George Forman Grill, etc etc etc.
For a bonus, look up the iBrator, by I believe 'Sleepless Knights,' they used to have their own web site years ago, with the satire commercials for the ficticious product, 'the iBrator:'
Woman's voiceover:
Step 1: insert batteries
Step 2: turn on
Step 3: (giggles) there is no step 3! (moans, giggles) oh god! oh! there is no step 3!
here's the GIS for 'ibrator':

- phillydrifter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jobs didn't 'leave the company in 1985,' the board of directors fired him. And then they came crawling back to him in 1997 after they had successfully ran his the company into the ground.
- shashwatp, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8nice insights. :)
- cthellis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good thing, too, as Jobs was on shaky ground with NeXT. The innovation was there, but the products certainly didn't catch fire the way they did at Apple.
But then it's not like he'd be hurting, what with Pixar and all...
But certainly Apple would have been. - radio1mike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very nice read, indeed. Thanks!
- asjk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg for good article on a notoriously difficult subject to research and for the good find by person who submitted the item.
- autoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like the way a rigorous and interesting Apple article can barely trigger 20 comments or so while the new adverts story got like 100+. Is digg only fun for flamewars? Ok, maybe I'm getting old...

If you can, check out Kunkel's book "AppleDesign," (which unfortunately has gone out of print, so try the library.) Filled with pictures of prototypes and released products as well. Numerous full mock-up model investigations into what would define their design language in the 90s. Half a dozen design variants for the ADB mouse. A tabletop filled with nothing but cable connectors. Lots of non-computer devices too.
The book has lots of Apple pr0n for those not satisfied with just the latest unboxing pics. - Designforum, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0We think that the new industrialdesign of Apple is only to reinvent the box. http://www.design-zentrum.de
- xjbri, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Too many words. Needs more pictures.
Me=too lazy to read, it's finals week. - Noty661, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2What's wrong with shashwatps comments? Do you guys work for ABC? ( :> ) Let the (wo)man comment on the article.

The innards of the CPU's, silly! - gamebittk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Now how can anybody refuse free pizza? This is madness!
