- Miraa, on 09/04/2009, -1/+39Well, Microsoft is still producing software without Mr. Gate.
- milesmparker, on 09/04/2009, -2/+10while jobs has passion and traits have become institutionalized and part of apple's culture, it's still dangerous to have so much of your brand equity tied to your CEO... look what happened to their stock when rumors/news about his sickness occurred.
- saltyterrier, on 09/04/2009, -3/+9Just having the name behind Steve Jobs is a huge asset for the company. He is a star and has created a star in Apple. It wasn't that long ago that Apple was all but written off by Silicon Valley. Who brought them back?
To overlook Steve's influence on this company is a huge mistake.
But what do I know? I'm just a salty terrier. - SpikeX, on 09/04/2009, -0/+4Mr. Jobs *
- StigNordas, on 09/04/2009, -0/+3I don't know if anyone could top Steve's lack of 'bedside manners' at the workplace.
- MWeather, on 09/05/2009, -2/+5Windows 7 is a Vista service pack. They may as well have named it Windows Mojave. It's a re-branding at best.
- mrBitch, on 09/05/2009, -0/+3@ waydee, RE: " .. Releasing Windows 7 as a standalone new version will get a lot of people off XP who for whatever reason didn't move to Vista."
I agree with you, but I don't understand why Microsoft are not making it easier for XP users to be able to upgrade to Windows 7.
If you're on XP, you will have to upgrade to Vista and THEN upgrade to Windows 7.
Otherwise, your only option on XP is to clean wipe and re-install everything from scratch.
The backup and restore of all your data is not the issue, it's the fact that you have to re-install all of your software and drivers as well.
Apple thinks about this "end user experience" far more than Microsoft does.
Officially, Apple say you must be running on OS X Leopard for you to be able to buy the $29 Snow Leopard upgrade.
Apple had the choice of making the upgrade "detect" your current OS, and then block you from updating if you didn't have Leopard already installed.
This would have SUCKED from the end user's perspective.
http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2009/08/mac-o ...
" .. In the event of a hard drive failure or simple decision to reinstall from scratch, owners of the $29 Snow Leopard upgrade would be forced to first install Leopard and then install Snow Leopard on top of it, perhaps more than doubling the installation timeāand quintupling the annoyance.
Given Apple's history in this area, no one should have been surprised to find out that Apple chose the much simpler option: the $29 "upgrade" DVD of Snow Leopard will, in fact, install on any supported Mac, whether or not it has Leopard installed. It will even install onto an entirely empty hard drive." - kojot350, on 09/05/2009, -0/+3you meen *****....
- Jimmylecroy21, on 09/05/2009, -0/+2I say if he steps down give it to the guy that say aluminum cool.
ALYOUMINIUMM - Gee1004, on 09/05/2009, -0/+2How does anybody know what Steve Job is doing at Apple? One picture of him crossing the street and a picture of his car in a handicap parking let along assume what he is doing.
- toshiro7, on 09/05/2009, -0/+1What you did there . . .
- whitesaint, on 09/04/2009, -1/+2Buried as inaccurate. Steve has already chosen God as his successor:
http://www.bbspot.com/News/2008/07/jobs-names-god- ... - inactive, on 09/05/2009, -0/+1I'll tell you what is in Steve's Mind.

- captaintrashbag, on 09/04/2009, -0/+1Apple already has all the people it needs to run without Steve Jobs. But Jobs is irreplaceable as Apple's fall guy.
Without Jobs, Apple's executive team will be overcome with fear because there will be no one to blame if bold choices don't pan out. So... no more bold choices. Apple becomes just another company. - anagai, on 09/05/2009, -0/+1Apple didn't learn much after the first time he was fired. They just floundered for a long time. Now since he got sick, They aint coming up with much now. How do you routinize or whatever you call it, the man's inspirations and ideas. If you got no great butt kicking ideas, you can have all the charisma in the world that will lead to nowhere.
- crocodial, on 09/04/2009, -0/+1Umm...Jobs left his post as CEO for what, 6 months? And the company didn't skip a beat even amid speculation that he may not return. There were a few minor stock blips at the end of last year when his health was in question, but the stock went up like 50% in his absence. I would have expected these types of concerns to be extinguished after that.
- srodolff, on 09/05/2009, -0/+1They did really great when they fired him the first time..........good luck with that...
- mrBitch, on 09/05/2009, -0/+1@ LarkStew, if you remember when Microsoft bought Bungie (who were in the middle of developing Halo for Mac), this would be a fitting "revenge" buy for Apple...
- mrBitch, on 09/05/2009, -0/+1Unbeliever!
The power of Jobs compels you! THE POWER OF JOBS COMPELS YOU! THE POWER OF JOBS COMPELS YOU! - colincornaby, on 09/05/2009, -1/+2If Steve left I think it would be a good thing. They'd probably open up the iPhone more, start competing more openly with Microsoft (i.e. compete in markets other than the home market), and maybe put out that damn cheap Mac tower that never seems to appear.
Maybe they'd even pull a Microsoft and buy a game company, but that's dreaming a bit too much I think. :) - waydee, on 09/05/2009, -0/+1I can't really see Apple returning to the sort of company they were in the 90s without Jobs, clearly he is a big influence on how the company operates these days but upon his departure I can hardly see Apple changing their formula and screwing up again - what Jobs has done is proven and I'm sure there are plenty of people in the company who can do the same now.
- mrBitch, on 09/05/2009, -0/+1Yeah, Apple should hire Ballmer. FTA :
" .. At Microsoft, president Steve Ballmer studied Max Weber's writings before taking the reins from founder Bill Gates. "I went out and I dusted the book back off," he said. "
Ballmer should actually try reading a few books, instead of just "dusting" them... - inactive, on 09/05/2009, -0/+1This is all BS. What we are seeing is NOT Jobs being revered due to some cult of personality. The guy is a prick. Nobody wants to work with or for him and people who have approached him have had their heads bitten off. "Messiah's" have great charisma/personality and a ***** product they are selling/promoting(religion, etc). In this case Jobs has poor personality and a great product. It's not perfect, but the iPod and Mac has very high customer satisfaction. It's tangible unlike cultist *****. When he comes on stage people are excited by the prospect of a new or better product. If Jobs doesn't deliver people are very disappointed, quiet, and the press is bad. If it were all about charisma, he could whip out a bic pen and the audience would cheer.
- mrBitch, on 09/05/2009, -0/+1Dream Apple acquisition : Apple buys Valve.
- waydee, on 09/05/2009, -0/+1If that's what it takes for people to give Vista a chance then so be it, I agree that they're very similar but you still hear nonsense claims about Vista despite it working very well these days. Changing the name to Windows 7, tweaking it to have lower system requirements, cleaning up the GUI and tidying up any other loose ends/improving usability would be a major service pack unlike any released before.
Releasing Windows 7 as a standalone new version will get a lot of people off XP who for whatever reason didn't move to Vista. It's a bit annoying for Vista users, I agree - but if XP is to be allowed to die MS need all its users on the current generation of OS and Windows 7 will achieve that I think. - colincornaby, on 09/05/2009, -0/+1To be fair, if Steve had never left Apple, Macs would never have gotten color and expansion slots, both things he was against. And NeXT wasn't exactly a huge success. Apple actually did quite well for a while after he left, better than when he was there actually, but the mistake they made was simply not cutting products when things got out of control, and letting Q/A go to crap in the mid-nineties as a result. But the Apple of the late 80's and early 90's without Jobs was fairly successful. During this time the first tower Macs and desktop Macs were released, along with the Powerbook line.
Steve was simply the right man at the right time when he came back. He likes things simple, and Apple's product line was too complicated. Now the same simple mentality is hurting Apple. They're getting destroyed in the server market despite a great OS and great hardware because they refuse to make a more complex product matrix or throw more engineers at OS X server. The iPhone is closed when there is no reason for it to be (every other device out there can sideload apps, and the cell networks do not catch fire as a result), and Apple never seems to be able to decide how they want to start competing with Microsoft in business.
Apple's getting to the point where they really can't afford to do the whole simple product matrix thing. They need to start branching out or they will stop growing. - LarkStew, on 09/05/2009, -0/+1No no no no no no no no no no no.
- mochaman, on 09/05/2009, -0/+1Good for them, I'm all for innovation, and I hope they continue with their knack for design, but one thing I can do without is Steve's douchiness. I hope the can get rid off it.
- inactive, on 09/05/2009, -0/+1He is worth about 20 Billion in Market Capitalization to Apple.
He owns 7.3% of Disney which is worth about 5 Billion.
He is also personally worth about 5 Billion.
He didn't get that from $1.00 per year. - kojot350, on 09/05/2009, -2/+2yeah, that's why hes salary is $1, get your facts right before insulting people.
- fuzzynyanko, on 09/05/2009, -1/+1Apple needs to run an event with someone other than Steve Jobs to see if that person resonates with the fanbase.
