- borez, on 11/07/2009, -2/+130I met Jonathan Ive at Tangerine design in the early 90's, really nice, quite, shy kinda guy. I'd never of thought in a million years when I met him that he'd go on to design some of the most iconic products of this decade, in fact some of the most iconic designs of all time.
Hats off to the guy. It's interesting to think what an ipod may have looked like if Apple hadn't hired him. - jarjarbinx, on 11/07/2009, -23/+129being obsessive is truly an apple quality. Others are just obsessively copying.
- Liam000, on 11/07/2009, -3/+81Why are so many designers bald?
- robbie32, on 11/07/2009, -0/+70It's sleek and minimalist?
- freonchill, on 11/07/2009, -0/+63one less thing to think about
same reason that Einstein wore the same suit everyday
if you dont have to think about the mundane, then you can focus your abilities at something more important - Nephersir7, on 11/07/2009, -2/+56I'm far from being an Apple fan (never bought an Apple product), but they definitely have a brilliant design team. I can't think of any other mainstream hardware company that has such an obsession with the design of their products, and it shows. It's difficult to deny that Apple is the best on that aspect...

http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/objectified/ - yttrstein, on 11/07/2009, -2/+43Dug for Ives, the guy who designed the iPhone, wiping an iPhone on his shirt.
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 11/07/2009, -4/+39i used to work at the 5th ave apple store. it's cool to see myself and my ex-coworker friends walking around in the background, helping customers!
apple has design down, and it's interesting to hear where they're coming from explained by jonny ive himself. - phogasmic, on 11/07/2009, -1/+35Ives is a genius. I'd be more concerned if he left Apple then if Steve Jobs did.
- Floobins, on 11/07/2009, -1/+34That must be why every other company seems to be copying it.
- spuddbuddie, on 11/07/2009, -1/+31I highly recommend watching Objectified to all those who have not seen it.
- brandnewx, on 11/07/2009, -3/+25I find "copy" too strong a word for use in the art community. If you look around, all these designers learn from each others' designs and just follow the popular design trends. Is that a fault to beautify their products with Apple-like designs?
It's called inspiration, learning. - juicebag, on 11/08/2009, -2/+22I was expecting a giant, empty, shiny white room with a giant white button that says "Create" on it.
- Liam000, on 11/07/2009, -0/+17good point. I am gonna try to do more of that in my life. just cut the ***** out you know.
- Zippo, on 11/07/2009, -0/+16If had to design products that can actually please Steve Jobs, you'd be pulling your hair out too.
- pwn247, on 11/07/2009, -0/+15I'd rather be bald with a good job at a good company than unemployed with a full head of hair.
Word. - d1a1s1, on 11/07/2009, -0/+14Yeah but you look like a cat so...it all evens out in the end...
- Liam000, on 11/07/2009, -1/+15YAH! YAH! YAH! *waves fire* Back to 4chan you go! YAH!
damn trolls. - Encephalon, on 11/07/2009, -2/+15I don't much care for anything Apple makes anymore other than their top end computers designed for graphics and video editing (I own a quad-core Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro) but, man, listening to Ive obsessing about he and his team were so meticulous about the products they designed, it kind of makes you appreciate the architecture of the products a bit more. I still don't want an iPhone, iPod or an iMac (to cite a few examples) but I can appreciate them more when I hear their designers talk about them so passionately.
- desertDenizen, on 11/08/2009, -1/+14That was the funniest part of the video, aside from that spastic kid trying to rip his dad's head off in the store.
- DVmaker, on 11/08/2009, -0/+12Thanks!
- jbmcb, on 11/08/2009, -0/+12In the late 80's, most laptops were clunky, beige or white, with flimsy plastic covers and connectors. Then came out with the, at the time, sleek Powerbooks. A year later every laptop was black or dark gray, and gone were all the external buttons and LCDs that cluttered them up.
You can tell how good a design team is by how many people copy them. Look at the iPod wheel, the iPhone, the newer iMacs, etc... - crazysamz, on 11/07/2009, -4/+16I can only imagine how many fixtures they would need to design. I mean, designing a product to be really well built and solid is not as hard as it would seem, the hardest part is trying to make it so that it can be mass-produced on an assembly line in an affordable and quick way. If the figure out how to use new methods of mass-production, like using replicating machines (http://www.fourmilab.ch/autofile/www/section2_84_2 ... or 3-d printers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_printing), then we will have products launching even quicker, and built using less resources, saving money and lowering product prices. That would be awesome. Until then, I'm waiting until the i7's make it into the MBP and I'm getting a 17" for college!
- tupperbacharach, on 11/07/2009, -3/+15***Is that a fault to beautify their products with Apple-like designs?***
You must mean "Braun-like" designs:
http://gizmodo.com/343641/1960s-braun-products-hol ... - JimboJones, on 11/07/2009, -1/+13FYI, this isn't in Apple's ID lab, it's in their machine shop across the street from Infinite Loop (Apple HQ). The actual ID design space is inside Infinite Loop.
- thebreach, on 11/07/2009, -0/+11Though I do have my convictions about Apple, I cannot deny how well built and well designed many of their products are. And they have a perfect simplicity about them.
My mouth hit the floor the first time I ever took the side cover off of a Mac G5. Spectacular - kevinmoore, on 11/07/2009, -1/+12@tupper,
Care to cite one example?
I've been working in and around data centers for fourteen years and I've yet to find a system that looks as nice inside as the Mac Pro.
I don't work with too many desktop machines, so I'd love to see examples of great designs that out-do Apple.
Thanks. - borez, on 11/07/2009, -1/+11And you can do better I suppose.
- Floobins, on 11/07/2009, -1/+8If it sells, they are doing it right.
- bizzywho, on 11/07/2009, -5/+12I wouldn't say it's copying in this regards. It's well known that Jony Ive gets a lot of his inspiration from Dieter Rams.
Think of it more like an homage. - Adamhunterprice, on 11/07/2009, -1/+8The outside appearance of something has little to do with its functionality. Just because the iMac is square doesn't mean he stole the design from a television, and just because somewhere in the world someone made a rectangle with a circle in the bottom half of it doesn't mean they iPod is copied from that. I know you probably know this but you probably have taken a stance against apple because everyone likes it and you want to go against the grain to show how original you are, even though you probably have and iPod or some apple product.
- Crimeodial, on 11/07/2009, -0/+7I think the Iphone is a great design. I recently got myself a 3GS as an upgrade from my first gen model, I've never had a better cell phone.
- jonvictorino, on 11/08/2009, -1/+8Objectified was a fantastic film.
- DeadFox1, on 11/08/2009, -0/+6Thanks for the recommendation!
http://www.objectifiedfilm.com/objectified-trailer ... - StuartGibson, on 11/07/2009, -0/+6Seconded. Also worth watching Gary Hustwit's first film about typography: Helvetica.
Had dinner with him in Belfast during the world tour of Objectified, another really nice guy. - KMartSheriff, on 11/08/2009, -0/+5Awesome! Thanks for that.
- Liam000, on 11/07/2009, -0/+5i used propecia for 6 months. didn't work and I developed a ringing in my ears so I stopped. it's been 9months now ringing still going on.
- Heidenreich12, on 11/07/2009, -1/+6It's like looking at Nostradamus. You can interpret things many ways after it's happened. And that's all they are doing with the Braun products.
- d1a1s1, on 11/07/2009, -1/+6Well, when you've properly designed something to the point where it simply does all that it should then theres no need for configurability.
- derektherock42, on 11/08/2009, -0/+4That was when Steve wasn't at Apple, and Ive hadn't joined yet. Instead, make way for... Gil Amelio. *shudder*
- Chriznak, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4because hair is superfluous to the function of the designer. I wonder if anyone's ever calculated the time it takes to wash and comb long hair on a daily basis and also haircuts take longer because you can't just run clippers on 0 over your entire head and be done in 5 minutes.
- KMartSheriff, on 11/08/2009, -0/+4Obviously you haven't seen some of the crap that was popular during the original iPod's first days. There's a reason the MP3 player didn't take off until Apple came along and simplified the process of using. And when I say "take off" I mean with the general public, not the typical Digg user.
- robwhite1979, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4I just caught it a couple of days ago... It's got a lot of substance, very interesting stuff...
- derektherock42, on 11/08/2009, -0/+4If you go on iTunes, right click any selected songs, and select "Get Album Art", it will search its database for album art and attach it to your albums.
- desertDenizen, on 11/08/2009, -0/+4Cool. The dude from Transporter designs snazzy computers too.
- marblewonder, on 11/08/2009, -1/+5nobody is accusing anyone of anything. calm down
- Charlie1er, on 11/08/2009, -0/+4How much are you ready to pay for a good design?
- kevinsboy, on 11/07/2009, -0/+3Also it's a big thing regarding the individual company, being an industrial designer I strive to make everything function simply and easily, as well as having an aesthetic that is true to the product and it's function. I know where I work currently the ID department is the smallest in the company (just me) where as J Ives has a giant department that drives the company
