- OneManArmy, on 11/22/2008, -0/+29you call that a hands on review article. fail!
- sputnike, on 11/21/2008, -2/+19Still needs Push notifications though... it would be cool to be signed into an IM while the app isn't open...etc. I understand Palringo is already trying to make that work.
- uglymike, on 11/22/2008, -3/+18Was that article in depth? Buried as inaccurate.
- nikhil1986, on 11/21/2008, -0/+14I like the update. Safari speeds have improved significantly. No more delay when you start it up and click on the address bar. I like the update so far! I won't even mention lack of C&P (oops i just did)
- superkendall, on 11/22/2008, -2/+15Is that way every update also applies to the old iPhone as well as 3G?
Oh wait, that would exactly contradict the lame point you are trying to make. - kelchm, on 11/22/2008, -5/+15are you retarded?
yes. - awolfe91, on 11/22/2008, -0/+10For real! They really need to get on the ball with the push notification service. It's WAY overdue!
- nogami, on 11/22/2008, -2/+10For all of the smugness at their launch (ie: "we don't do poor multitasking like that Windows Mobile stuff"), at least Windows Mobile has the ability to run multiple programs at once and notify you if something happens in the background.
Until they roll the push notifications out, they're still a few steps behind. We also need a REAL GPS application with turn-by-turn. - wastern, on 11/22/2008, -4/+11If the update gave copy/paste you'd be bitching that it didn't have street view since the G1 has it
get over it. Do you want some half assed bolted on copy/paste feature that sucks to use or do you want to wait a bit for something that actually works well? patience is a virtue, good things come to those who wait, and all that happy horse *****
There is always going to be something it doesn't have or you wish it had - Radan, on 11/22/2008, -0/+7I'm 100% for the push service solution compared to letting 3rd party apps run as background processes. The iPhone is already running on all cylinders as it is. Background processes would simply not work on the iPhone as it is now.
Push services at least theoretically gives both the benefits of low memory usage and background notifications. Of course, it still doesn't cover all fields as actual background processes do, but personally I think it's a fair trade off for a more stable device.
Though again, right now we have nothing. They seriously need to add SOMETHING asap. - Subriot, on 11/22/2008, -5/+12So Apple gives us Street View but not copy and paste?
- fraggle35, on 11/22/2008, -1/+7Have you learned anything?
Next time sync and back up your apps before you upgrade. - Ashepp, on 11/22/2008, -2/+8Is that really a review?
- PrometheusBorn, on 11/22/2008, -1/+7That's a great theory and all, except for the fact that all these features are getting updated on my last generation phone without me paying anything.
I don't recall my previous cell phones updating themselves with features as time went on.... nor does my vehicle horsepower improve itself without me paying anything... hmmm.... great correlation there. - inactive, on 11/22/2008, -2/+7Let him feel special. He read stuff out of a textbook!
- chrisjscott, on 11/22/2008, -1/+5I'm starting to think that people are so addicted to complaining about cut/paste that they don't re-evaluate the actual need for it. I've had my iPhone for a solid year now, use it VERY heavily and can count on one hand the number of times I wish I had c&p. Really, it's just not that big a deal...
- wastern, on 11/22/2008, -3/+7it multi-tasks now, just not for the 3rd party apps. iPod in the background, using the phone while in other apps, mail checking, etc
at launch there were no 3rd party apps and the multitasking worked just fine and still does for those apps.
If you 40 apps installed and they all want to be in an always on state your phone is going to run slow as ***** - innovaciones, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4I love the header: "MMS and cut and paste finally arrive. Only kidding!"
- macshaggy, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4Still want landscape view with Mail as well.
- Jerk, on 11/22/2008, -2/+6Unlike other companies, Apple has been adding features with firmware updates.
- ggko, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3I'm totally looking forward to the copy/paste button in the next iPhone model!
- superkendall, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3The old phone (sans 3G or GPS) locates you via cell towers and WiFi spots - it actually works pretty well, especially in larger cities where WiFi signals all around give a big clue as to where you are.
Street View works anywhere on the maps, anywhere you have a pin (either from a search or a pin you place yourself) you can pull up Street View for that point, and then browse just like on the web (clicking on the street view arrows to go down the street). - tracydanger, on 11/22/2008, -1/+4Yeah, because copy & paste is so difficult to implement that after two years of the iphone being out, they're still having difficulty figuring it out. I mean, come on, it's not like any other PDA devices (like the Newton) have figured it out yet. We must be patient.
- hydr, on 11/22/2008, -1/+4Safari still crashes for me.
- sebastienk, on 11/22/2008, -1/+4You should update to 2.2
2.0 was very buggy - tico24, on 11/22/2008, -1/+4At what point was the article an in depth, hands on review? They've just padded out the release notes a bit.
- SickofSects, on 11/22/2008, -1/+4you don't have an iphone, do u?
- tracydanger, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3yeah, maybe if there was some cap or at least after having say 3-5 open at the same time, you get a warning that your phone could run slow or crash. Then it gives people the option and they can't get mad at Apple if it starts crashing all the time. People with jailbroken iphones run multiple programs and it doesn't seem to affect speed.
- tracydanger, on 11/22/2008, -1/+3I haven't jailbroken my phone, but my bro-in-law has & he can stay signed into palringo when it's not open. That would be nice b/c if it was always signed in, it could take the place of text messaging and is totally free.
- wastern, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2my is there no search in the iPod app... This has been my question since day 1. The normal iPod has a search and no keyboard which makes it kind of annoying. So then they make an iPod with a full keyboard and forget to add in a search bar
- topgigmedia, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2I wish they would add search (spotlight) at least to email.
- SaintStryfe, on 11/22/2008, -2/+4I really can't believe how angry people are over copy-and-paste. I can't think of any time I could use it on the iPhone. I reply to email, I've never had a link not linked via hotlinking, phone or electronic, and it just seems simpler.
And when they eventually add it, there will be pages of whiners about adding it earlier, and they'll hold it against apple for ever. - brianegge, on 11/22/2008, -1/+3Google Street View works great here in Sydney. Walking directions is so-so, and there is no public transport directions.
- tracydanger, on 11/22/2008, -1/+3Umm...I'm not really whining about it, but there have been several times it would have been quite nice. There have been multiple times there was an address in an e-mail that it did not hot link. I used to use C&P when I had a palm pilot. So, I think it would be useful to plenty of people.
- jkramlich, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2After updating I cannot delete any email from my phone. I am using IMAP for all of my email accounts. It is the only bug I've encountered after a days worth of use.
- bbdruss, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2 "Feature creep" is actually when a company gets over excited and piles on extra, sometimes unneeded functionality to an existing product, often resulting in bloat.
Apple continue to add useful features that improve the existing iphone. Yes, they could add a zillon new things to it but they have to draw the line somwhere. I just hope copy/ paste is next up on the cards.
As for MMS, the only thing I ever received on my old phone was a picture of someone flashing their boobs, and if I wanted that I could find them on-line, much high rez too ;) - sondunoneblood, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2might just be a placebo effect, but my text message typing seems to be more responsive in this update then before.
- topgigmedia, on 11/22/2008, -2/+4That's odd because I am able to get all of their feature updates on my 1st gen. iPhone (i.e. no additional purchase necessary).
In short, you have no idea what you are talking about. - SickofSects, on 11/22/2008, -1/+3Safari is much improved... thats a great reason to upgrade.
- SouthsideIrish, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1Yeah, love the G1 with the crappy life and the copy and paste that isn't in every app. BTW, I need a phone that lasts a whole day, not 4 hours.
- Weaselboy, on 11/22/2008, -1/+2In depth? Buried.
- ericdano, on 11/22/2008, -1/+2TechRadar? I see the trend, MakiMaki posts all the Huffington Post articles, which suck, and MrBabyman posts all the TechRadar articles.........which suck.
Buried. At least you could have linked to Engadget or some site with some good reporting. - SouthsideIrish, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1We don't have cut and paste on any Apple computer. Apple does not believe in it.
- SouthsideIrish, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1Hmm...like how do you have TBT directions when the GPS turns itself off? Oh, and would you really want TBT when the battery life would be crap?
- Nephersir7, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1could you be more specific about which companies dont do that?
- Shaidow, on 11/22/2008, -2/+3WHY IS CUT-AND-PASTE SO HARD?!?!?!
It is highly useful and saves having to write stuff down on paper only to have to enter it back in to the very same device you viewed it on (I thought we were trying to save paper these days?) - Radan, on 11/22/2008, -1/+2Here's a nice little rule that has worked perfectly for me so far:
Always upgrade to the latest 2.X firmware on the iPhone.
It has got more stable for every update so far. Also, the auto correction has got a HUGE update in the latest update, at least the Swedish keyboard.
Also, about MMS:
http://www2.mobispine.com/dotAsset/4567.pdf - Radan, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1What's wrong with the walking directions? I haven't got to use it for real yet, but when I typed in a destination I thought it mapped out the shortest route quite well (ie ignoring whether the road is one way or not e.t.c), it even typed out the estimated time it would take to get there (which was pretty much exactly the time it usually it takes me to get there).
Or is there something I've missed? - alerad, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1You should, it would be sure to make the front page
