- Malik112099, on 07/10/2009, -8/+25That is the most horribly thrown togther article I have stumbled through in recent memory.
- AlienMushroom, on 07/10/2009, -6/+17Anyway. The AT&T plans kill the deal.
- dustinmacdonald, on 07/10/2009, -5/+16No, it's exactly like the PC. Hardware is regularly improved, but everything still runs the same OS. It's up to the individual developer to decide if their app/game will only support certain specs, or if they want to ship one binary that supports all devices. You can even run unique code depending on what device the app is running on.
- TranquilNight, on 07/10/2009, -4/+13EXCELLENT COMMENT!! WILL READ AGAIN!!! A++++++++++!!!
- Tankslap, on 07/10/2009, -2/+10If you have an iphone, fine, but otherwise you can STFU. I have an iphone, xbox 360, wii, have had almost every major console going back to an atari 2600, played PC games for years, and actually got paid to review games during my college years. And I can tell you that the iphone is a very compelling platform, with games that will draw just as much time, if not more because of convenience and the tactile factor, as any other.
- manitoba98xp, on 07/10/2009, -1/+7It's open again.
- digitalpencil, on 07/10/2009, -0/+6i don't think anyone's proposing that this device is going head-to-head with the 360 or the PS3, it's a phone. As phones go however, it's a pretty ***** sweet mobile gaming device. The graphics are superb (look at the difference between Assassins Creed on the DS vs 3G) and the multi-touch interface and accelerometer have provided some pretty innovative gameplay across various titles.
It's not a serious gaming platform, it's a smart phone. but as phones go, it's got a lot of power under-the-hood and the recent bump, coupled with OpenCL have opened doors for more graphically immersive gameplay on multi-purpose mobile devices. - shank2001, on 07/10/2009, -3/+9I guess you have not played some of the awesome games on the iPhone. If you want examples just ask, or go check out:

It is a great platform for games. That said, it is not meant to compete with consoles, or the PSP etc. The iPhone is the beginning of a whole new class of games, and the future of this class is only looking better and better.
I find myself playing games on my iPhone way more than on my PSP.
I love that I have more choice on the iPhone of games that I can play for 5 minutes at a time when I have a spare moment, as well as a plethora of deeper games when I have more time. - digitalpencil, on 07/10/2009, -1/+7Fred, you really need to ease up on the hateraid. Every time I see you, you're just badmouthing apple products. We get it, you don't like them. Fair enough, to each their own. You don't seem to be a troll though so why in ***** don't you just filter the topic?
- NiceGuyVan, on 07/10/2009, -0/+4Problems:
1) Gaming platforms need buttons
2) Each idevice has different hardware specs (ie: processor speed) the point of a platform is uniform hardware. If a dev only has an ipod touch, he'll only test on that, and it's no guarantee the game will run well on an iphone
3) Developers have admitted they make games not for quality, but just to get that 5 minutes of use to sell the game
4) the app store has so many apps its hard to find anything at all
5) The 10 MB limit to have your game downloadable over cellular connections
and lastly, people are so used to the cheap prices, no one could make a real quality game cause it wouldnt sell - LordNecros, on 07/10/2009, -1/+5"5 SECONDS"
This guy has clearly never tried to play games on the original Playstation. - jeffmon, on 07/10/2009, -3/+7Seriously. I skimmed through the article and said to myself, "WTF?", then closed the tab.
Buried. - davidtowers, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3I really want an Iphone!
- NiceGuyVan, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3"If you have an iphone, fine"
I do. Gameboy fricken COLOR was a better gaming platform. Gaming platforms need buttons for starters, multiplayer from day 1, and actual quality games which iphone doesnt have. What it has is $2 throwaway/shovelware programs made to make a quick buck
iphone is no more a gaming platform than cell phones before it - shank2001, on 07/10/2009, -3/+6Actually the iPhone was HUGE at E3 last year and this year. I saw tons of stuff for the iPhone. Here are some articles about it:

I could go on and on and on with links from E3 about the iphone.
The iPhone was everywhere at E3, and not as demos, but most developers had iPhones of their own as well. - Kamioni, on 07/10/2009, -2/+5Buried for such a poorly written article along with a Nickelback song in the video. But mostly because of the Nickelback song.
- Sherman901, on 07/10/2009, -1/+3Have you ever played an iPhone games that aren't free? No? Ok, kindly ***** off.
- vault, on 07/10/2009, -1/+3The accelerometer is used sometimes...like in Super Monkey Ball, you tilt the phone to determine which way the marble should go. Same thing in Moto Chaser, you turn it to steer the bike. In iFish, you sort of make a throwing movement with your hand holding the phone to cast the fishing rod.
I mean, I wouldn't buy an iPhone just to play the games. But it's a great phone, and when you have some downtime as you're waiting for food or the people you're with are talking about something boring, you can play a game with fairly good graphics. - Sherman901, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2You haven't been paying too much attention lately, have you?
- ylonghome, on 07/10/2009, -8/+10good
- rebotfc, on 07/10/2009, -2/+4Until a gamepad adaptor for the iPhone is made it will never dominate PSP or DS in mobile gaming. Playing any kind of platform game is just painful on a touch screen.
- NiceGuyVan, on 07/10/2009, -0/+2I have. They are nothing compared to actual gaming platform's games.
- bilbohicks, on 07/10/2009, -1/+3Yeah he's very much an anti-Apple troll to the extent that I too recognise his name. What a loser.
- Propyne, on 07/10/2009, -8/+9The only thing that makes the iPhone good is that the games are very easily accessible. other than that, it's not that special.
- uberduger, on 07/10/2009, -3/+4Okay then. Bait taken.
So... how do I upgrade my iPhone? Because I have a normal 3 but I heard that EA are planning on making 2 versions of their games - one for the 3 and one for the S. And if it was a PC, I could just buy a new component and play the 'higher-settings version'. Is that now possible with an iPhone? Awesome! - cthellis, on 07/10/2009, -1/+2While there are certainly some genres that the iPhone will suck at without a "gaming shell" of some sort (which can come out now, interestingly), the majority of the most popular games on both the DS and PSP have no real issues on the iPhone, and some of them would play even better.
Losing platformers and certain other action genres on the portable is not as fatal as you'd think. - uberduger, on 07/10/2009, -2/+3The point which I think convinced many people that the iPhone was not as serious as the DS/PSP/etc was the moment where it was revealed that Mass Effect Galaxy would be controlled by tilting the phone to move your guy up and down the screen. I must admit, that moment shook my faith a little.
- kamisama, on 07/10/2009, -4/+5Don't know why people are digging you down, but you hit the nail on the head.
- vault, on 07/10/2009, -3/+3It's much faster as the video shows.
But if you already have a 3G iPhone (and are eliglble for early upgrade, since you can't get the new customer pricing), it costs $399 to upgrade to the 16 gb 3GS. Lots of people who would otherwise buy a company's games aren't going to do that, so they should just release separate versions. - ATrueRoman, on 07/10/2009, -4/+4it's a great idea to enovate a game in a phone and apple has reach the point.
- TranquilNight, on 07/10/2009, -6/+6Now we need better graphics.. Too bad game makers won't do that because they will wanna make the most money with full compatibility with previous ipod/iphone versions.
- Propyne, on 07/10/2009, -3/+3Well, what makes the iPhone good for games other than the app store? Only some games actually use the touchscreen well in games.
- nastyazhar, on 07/10/2009, -4/+4yea, me too :)
- strangewill, on 07/10/2009, -5/+4@dustinmacdonald:
Most likely no, PC software is known to degrade itself to work on older hardware, smart phone software not so much, furthermore you cannot degrade basic features for old-gen compatibility.
Furthermore, if you knew about PC development, or anyone that dugg you up did, you'd know that the goal of PC development is to get as wide a gap in requirements as possible while meeting projects goals, and the difference in technology is generally power scale, not base features (like... ability to copy/paste, gps access, etc.). - strangewill, on 07/10/2009, -9/+7Not really, this is going to be a major problem.
Apple likes to release new generations rather quickly, compared to other markets game developers are in (consoles, handhelds, computers, etc.). This will either be a cash cow for gaming companies at the cost of consumers, or lots of programs will only work on certain gen products.
That or Apple needs to stop popping out new generations every 5 minutes. - kingfoot, on 07/10/2009, -8/+4E3 sucks.
ever since it went closed doors, the show doesn't mean anything anymore. - inactive, on 07/10/2009, -15/+10anyone who uses a phone as a serious gaming platform has missed the point.
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -6/+0nice your blog voting digg (vkswami2008@gmail.com) joing me
- FredFredrickson, on 07/10/2009, -17/+11Did Apple put on a big show at E3? No? Then why do these idiots keep insisting their phone is a good platform for anything but ***** casual games?
- TranquilNight, on 07/10/2009, -11/+5agreed
