- sstidman, on 04/29/2008, -2/+39How could a phone be illegal? I don't really understand how something becomes illegal just because that's how some corporation wants it.
Not permitting people to use any phone on any network they choose is what should be illegal. - inactive, on 04/29/2008, -0/+18It's not illegal to unlock phones you ***** retard. It may well be illegal in the US but who gives a *****. This story isn't about the US.
Just because apple does not want something does NOT make it illegal. - RubineBoy, on 04/29/2008, -2/+16It's just unbelievable retarded to sell a locked phone. Here in Belgium the phone cannot be sold because of a law that forbids locking phones down to one carrier. They unlock them here too. Apple really asks for it.
Repeat after me: freedom - FDDIcent, on 04/29/2008, -3/+13really? do you really think that joke is still funny?
- inactive, on 04/29/2008, -1/+11Just because apple doesn't want them being used in russia does NOT make them illegal.
Jeez since when is apple the law? - inactive, on 04/29/2008, -3/+9shut the ***** up fanboy.
- Drizzit, on 04/29/2008, -2/+7Apple has not gone after anyone who's cracked the iPhone and used it on another carrier. Investors really only care about how many units ship rather than depend on a measly 10 dollars per month per phone. Once the iPhone faces enough competition they will have to drop that fee and go multi carrier or they risk losing sales. There's already enough pressure for a CDMA model in the US and several investors have complained that limiting it to GSM only is hurting sales in the US and Japan where a majority of CDMA users reside.
- inactive, on 04/29/2008, -1/+6"Apple has not gone after anyone who's cracked the iPhone"
They could go after them alright but it would be like the dog chasing the car. What the ***** would they do with them when they catch them. Unlocking a phone is NOT illegal, its merely corporate policy not to allow it. If thats your definition of the law then you need to wake the ***** up. - inactive, on 04/29/2008, -0/+4So? How is any of this illegal?
- inactive, on 04/29/2008, -2/+5Wrong. Apple is at fault for insisting on these contracts, AT&T didn't insist on it. What's AT&T to do? refuse to sell these profitable devices? If they didn't someone else sure as hell would.
You're one of the "Apple can do no wrong" people. Wake the ***** up kid. - nirav72, on 04/29/2008, -1/+4Apple has a 5 year contract with AT & T here in the states.
- United857, on 04/29/2008, -2/+4About the same number in China, if not more. They can be pre-unlocked and with localized UI if you prefer -- sold at dozens of stores around Shanghai and other major cities, with a ~60-70% markup.
When I was in the US with my Chinese colleagues, they were asked to buy 5 or 6, between 3 people. - inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2what's wrong with being gay and sucking *****? dude are you a homophobic? what's the point in hating on gays? not that i am gay, but being gay has got nothing to do with buying and owning an apple or any other product.
- clockdist, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2Provide link, or it didn't happen.
- RubineBoy, on 04/29/2008, -1/+3And how long before that contract ends? And why is it locked here? We have no AT&T here ...
- AndreiOttawa, on 04/29/2008, -1/+2Last time i checked Apple was in business of making phones, not charging monthly fees for their use. Do your homework. Apple has already been forced to offer unlocked phone in some European countries.
- Yoshi39, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1AT&T will pay Apple a commission for each new customer and a cut of the customer's monthly payment,
http://news.softpedia.com/news/AT-T-To-Pay-Apple-C ... - pimaxc, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1it's illegal because no taxes or tariffs have been charged on it (yes I realize that a tariff is a kind of tax)
- streetstealth, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1I think the idea in the article is that they're being smuggled in and thus aren't being subject to import tariffs. So that would be the one illegal part.
But I agree, there are way too many people who are throwing around "illegal" when they should be saying "unofficial" or "unapproved."
Illegal means the cops can get you for it. Unapproved means Steve Jobs can make an angry face at you for it. - scruffles, on 04/29/2008, -2/+3It's illegal because they don't pay Russian taxes or duties. They mention that fact in the article. Don't let that stop your trolling though. Have fun.
- kkiran, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Its funny when you say Illegal cos' they have paid FULL price for the iPhone, I see the term being used rather too loose..
- inactive, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Companies overstep their boundaries by locking phones, and controlling where they can be sold/imported/exported. They should not be allowed to do such things. This is why I publish and publicize hacks of this nature.
- tonich03, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Eldar Murzatin? I remember that name as the chief reviewer when I used to read mobile-review.com.. good memories.
- Yoshi39, on 04/29/2008, -1/+2They get a monthly fee from at and t for every subscriber or at least thats how I have understood it
- tadpoleontheweb, on 04/29/2008, -1/+1Trust me, Apple would love for anyone anywhere in the world who wanted an iPhone to buy one. The problem comes when you have to deal with national carriers who want to impose restrictions and pricing that can ruin the iPhone experience. It's like the music companies. It's not Apple requiring the DRM, it's the labels. Anytime an Apple device wants to get out, partnership with another entity tends to rein it in. Don't blame Apple. Blame Russian carriers.
- Atomic1fire, on 04/29/2008, -1/+1That's why your here...
- Jalh, on 04/29/2008, -1/+1still funny , but not the way he do it
- remakeru, on 04/29/2008, -5/+5***** Apple?
- monsterette, on 04/29/2008, -3/+2ahhhh...the forbidden fruit....."Having an iPhone is like being part of a club."
- AndreiOttawa, on 04/29/2008, -2/+1What fees is Apple deprived of if iPhone is bought in US at an Apple store and then brought to Russia? WTF!?
- FDDIcent, on 04/29/2008, -3/+2it's AT&T who is at fault here. Before apple actually made the iphone nobody wanted to risk having it on their network, except AT&T who made them sign into a lengthy contract.
- fallingfree, on 04/29/2008, -5/+3Eldar Murtazin is a lying and dumb freak, often called "paltypus" (or Utkonos) in Russia.
Apple is gay and all its users suck *****. - monsterette, on 04/29/2008, -4/+2ahhhh...the forbidden fruit..."Having an iPhone is like being part of a club."
- n013e, on 04/29/2008, -7/+2Eldar Murtazin is well-known russian Apple hater, so his comments are biased.
His estimation of phones in russia doesn't look believable - mahenda, on 04/29/2008, -8/+1I guess they mean it's illegal to unlock iPhones so you can use them in Russia.
- mastazed, on 04/29/2008, -11/+2hmmmm
- xptweakerntn, on 04/29/2008, -17/+4In Soviet Russia, iPhone phones you!
