- NeoRicen, on 10/10/2007, -11/+527NBC must be completely retarded.
If I had access to NBC shows on iTunes (I don't, Australian), and this happened, what would I do? I'd ***** torrent them that's what, this move by NBC is going to increase piracy for them by ALOT. They'll not only lose the money from iTunes but all their customers aren't going to move to their store. I hope someone got fired over this.
Kudos to Apple for standing up to them though. - supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -40/+470***** NBC.
I repeat,
***** NBC. - repruhsent, on 10/10/2007, -11/+256I love how these people (like the people at NBC) make decisions about things that they don't understand based purely on what makes economic sense for them.
- Blackmane, on 10/10/2007, -10/+228Dugg for "jackassery"
My new favourite word. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+213"disallowing iPods and iPhones from playing anything other than DRM-protected video"
Oh, now there's a KILLER business model. As in, that model would kill your business. - streak, on 10/10/2007, -4/+187If iPods contain "illegally downloaded material", it didn't come from iTMS.
- Gir9000, on 10/10/2007, -6/+144I agree, NBC is being very greedy. And they also want to muscel in on how Apple runs its store... Apple gets the content wholesale from NBC etc... and in turn sells it at a standard price that everyone can afford and makes them profit. If NBC got their way it would not be iTunes it would be nbcTunes. Exactly what part of iTunes would be left in Apple's control if NBC controlled content & price. Oh yea the DRM well it looks like NBC wants to control that to. Apple is not just standing up for consumer rights, it is also standing up for its right to control its own store. Good for Apple on standing up to them and SHAME ON NBC!
- Mutton, on 10/10/2007, -4/+122How can these NBC execs be so out of touch with reality? Props to Apple for holding their ground.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+119I just really want to see NBC come crawling back to Apple next year.
- DanGleesacks, on 10/10/2007, -6/+107Genius... [sarcasm]
I can't believe muppets like this are still employed and make decisions! - edicius, on 10/10/2007, -3/+104Hey, don't group Muppets in with these *****. Kermit would never pull this *****!

Now tell me: Where on this picture did iTunes touch you? - ConeOfSilence, on 10/10/2007, -3/+79NBC is probably run by old men who don't even know how to open an e-mail.
- 80hd, on 10/10/2007, -2/+75Synopses of the article:
Apple - "Wow you ***** don't understand what it takes to make people quit getting your shows for free. Get lost till you do.
NBC - "Your customers are stealing our content and you've only made it worse" - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+624th place NBC, like most of the music industry, is struggling. And when a struggling company lacks leadership and vision they make decisions that are shortsighted and desperate.
iTunes is free money for NBC, to the tune of $10 million apparently, with little or no extra work required on the part of NBC. It's also great publicity for a 4th place network.
Without iTunes that money and publicity just goes away. In my opinion, the 4th place network should be leveraging iTunes more aggressively; instead, NBC tries to gouge it to death. Looks like it'll be another rough season for them. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+62I keep hearing NBC and everyone else say "piracy, piracy, piracy." How can shows be pirated when they come over the air for free?
- streak, on 10/10/2007, -4/+58NBC - "Ohhh, Apple is so cool and hip with their Internet business! We'll be super-hip by dissing them and creating our own web site. I mean, you can't get cooler than that!"

NBC - "Hey, about what i said earlier..." - Hosalabad, on 10/10/2007, -7/+53Ditto.
I like Asshattery too. - JohnD212, on 10/10/2007, -6/+51That's why they're dead last in the ratings war. Sure they have a handful of good shows...but that's it. They're a loser network.
- Vermifax, on 10/10/2007, -3/+45You don't have a computer...?
- scottykempf, on 10/10/2007, -2/+39Destroy our fanbase, we will. MMMMMMMM. Join the Empire, you must.
- Mitchl, on 10/10/2007, -5/+42NBC is making such a huge mistake. I think I am the average iPod/iTunes user, and I don't have any pirated music in my library. I have rips of my 450 CDs, and then the last 40-50 or so albums are all from iTunes and all protected. I really don't think that the average user is spending all that much time figuring out how to get free music... maybe I am wrong.
But as far as TV shows go, I really think it is all about ease. I know there are all kinds of ways to get video over the internet, and whether iTunes carries a show or not, that will be the case. and if someone d/ls via bittorrent or newsgroups, are they spending the time to put it in their iTunes library? I doubt it. For me, iTunes is a great source when someone tells me after the fact I need to go see this or that show. Last year it was Heroes and Jericho that I didn't watch from day one and had to go back and get some episodes to catch up on. NBC doesn't want me to get it from iTunes, that's fine, but the only other choice is to make it free off the NBC website or youtube or google, because I am not going to provide my payment information to another source other than iTunes, and I am not going to pay more than I have to for an episode on iTunes.
I would be willing to bet that NBC is going to lose 95% of their internet market through this. Charging 250% more is not going to make up for that loss. - noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -3/+39What network do you work for again? $5/episode? Treating everyone like a criminal to get to the negligible group that actually are? That sure as hell is not what I'd caqll a good business decision.
- conman16x, on 10/10/2007, -2/+38The only NBC show I watched was The Office, and I had an iTunes season pass. I guess I'll just torrent them now, since that's the next most convenient option.
- arpnuke, on 10/10/2007, -1/+36If the public can't get it from itunes, they will get it from torrents.
- killrrabit, on 10/10/2007, -7/+42I have purchased seasons of NBC shows on iTunes before. Now, I am going to go to great length to illegally download them and make them available to everyone a I know. Then I am going to buy a season or two of some ABC show from iTunes, even if I never watch them. NBC sucks.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+34Yeah, NBC has your point covered. Your point is surely why NBC asked Apple to put anti-piracy provisions in.
See, that's how these people think. Instead of making a product people want to buy, they concentrate on penalizing people who don't buy their product.
Screw NBC. - caseodilla, on 10/10/2007, -3/+36NBC would be better off saying, "Hey kid, I'm a computer. Stop all the downloading."
- Progression, on 10/10/2007, -0/+30Actually, this decision makes absolutely NO economic sense.
- cleverboy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+31I don't think Apple had much choice. If they didn't pull the fall line-up, they would need to deal with an avalanch of consumer complaints, the first round being, "Why can't I buy a season pass!!! Hello!!!" Then, the complaints would eventually die down until early December, when it will be far, far too late for anyone to do anything about it... and Apple will bear the brunt of the complaints that the season was shut off in mid-run. The only thing Apple could have done differently, is reserve comments as to WHY NBC would not renew. On that point, I don't think silence would have served anyone except NBC.
- TheOther1, on 10/10/2007, -4/+32And Assclownery, also.
- Theisos, on 10/10/2007, -3/+30Apple is the Champion of the people. I'm behind them 100%. I've never been happier with Apple. I am fed up of these huge Corporations trying to get more and more money from consumers because they want to make 205 million a month instead of 204. NBC is spewing garbage about Apple controlling piracy on it's devices...? Maybe Dell should be harassed about Piracy on their computers...ridiculous! NBC wanted more, Apple decided to do something for all of us and told NBC to go grow a ***** dick. Go Team Apple!
- overlord44, on 10/10/2007, -2/+29Actually, NBC Universal doesn't own Universal Music. I believe Universal Music is still owned by Vivendi SA, whereas NBC Universal is owned by GE
- Touchy610, on 10/10/2007, -4/+31I'd like to add douchebaggery, if I may.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -2/+29No, they need to DRM-ify the iPod and sell $5 shows if they want to sell NBC content in iTunes. Do you think there is any chance of this? There better not be. NBC asked for way more than they can expect in the deal.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+28Hard to see the world around you when your high on coke most of the time.
- Bleeblaow, on 10/10/2007, -1/+27Rabble rabble rabble.
- fantasticFlan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+29It may surprise you, but there are still people who prefer a legitimate, legal purchase to pirating when it's available.
- darienphoenix, on 10/10/2007, -2/+27What a load of ***** that comment was. I don't know where to begin, but I'll start with this:
If NBC charged double the wholesale price for each episode, and Apple DIDN'T raise the prices to match the cost, how exactly did you expect them to make a profit on selling NBC shows? - mbthompson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+25The author of the article brings up the same thought that I had in his last paragraph. Most shows, in fact almost every show, is available on DVD. Given the iTunes pricing, you'd be spending more for less quality etc. around $100 a season. For me, I'll be going to Deep Discount DVD to buy shows from now on, after which I will rip them to my hard drive to stream over my media server. Usually the boxed sets are less than $40 over there.
- Kogut, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26Sorry, I don't see how your second post reveals any business knowledge on your end.
- bittermang, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25It's a helluva drug.
- Optimaximal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+24Well, don't forget that as far as the RIAA is concerned, if it's on your PC, isn't DRM'ed and hasn't been paid for twice, it got there illegally! They consider ripping a CD a crime on the magnitude of seal-clubbing and child porn.
- Konstantino, on 10/10/2007, -3/+26No one said Apple was God, what's your point? This is about NBC.
- zmigliozzi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23You could say that for most corporations :P
- genpatton7, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22I used to buy episodes of "The Office" b/c it would save me the time of converting torrented files to ipod format, now i guess ill just have to make the effort. Good job NBC, now I'm paying $0 instead of $1.99...
- chroko, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23What makes you think that NBC's player - or download format - is going to be good? The only real alternative is Microsoft Windows Media Video - with far worse DRM than iTunes.
Instead of iTunes, you'll require Windows Media Player (which, of course, ties you to Windows). Purchases will probably only play on one computer - and won't support mobile devices.
Unintuitive, ***** playback software, no Mac support - and no hardware support. Where do I sign up? /sarcasm. - cleverboy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23zybch, you're a riot. Apple never wanted DRM. It's only "thanks to Apple" that DRM is widely adopted, *because* Apple found the LEAST agonizing implementation that both satisfied content producers, and gave consumers an acceptable degree of freedom. NBC, in its airing of its dispute with renewing, said that Apple doesn't do ENOUGH to prevent piracy.
You know what this means? It means that NBC wants Apple to insistute even MORE DRM into iTunes, so that people won't be able to do as much with content they purchased/acquired outside of iTunes either. How... how... (Oh, my god, I almost got really upset), but how IDIOTIC is that? Dude, its so... not... Apple. Like NBC also noted... Apple just wants to sell iPods and partner with content providers to do so. NBC is irritated that selling "content" isn't Apple's primary focus.
Wise-up, man. Read a newspaper or something. - renegadeafk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20Yes, which in turn just penalizes people that buy their product legally.
