- TheTap, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Might be a good day to check for iPod deals on eBay.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12If it was a bunch of Video iPods that was stolen, why'd the reporter have to show off a nano and explain that the stolen iPods were bigger, with a video screen? Why couldn't they just get a Video iPod--oh, wait, never mind. :)
- pondster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Just wanted to add, this really shows you how customer service has really gone down the tubes. Many moons ago when I ran a Software Etc (GameStop) it was company policy to greet EVERY customer that came in the store, you make your store friendlier PLUS thieves know someone is watching. This has gone the way of the dodo, with big companies hiring anyone as long as they work for min.wage. The best part of the video is when they guy said (After the robbery) the employees seemed paranoid (Yeah cause they know everyone working that night is going to get canned today!)
- randyest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Oh my. I watched the video, and the CompUSA employee (manager?) actually had the nerve to complain that he "doesn't see much police presence sround here (*looks around*) right now I see none!"
Give me a break. I think it's compUSA's problem, not the police. If they want constant "police presence" in and around their store they can hire some off-duty officers. Otherwise police yourselves.
Crappy customer service and CompUSA are forever intertwined in my mind. Glad to see it biting them in the ass. - mgrasso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The quote from the employee was edited. The real quote was: "I don't see much police presence around here, would you like to buy a service plan? How about a service plan, you really should purchase a service plan. We strongly recommend a service plan. I have a service plan, everyone buys the service plan".
- Michaeljg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I agree with you pondster. I'm a General Manager for a Fortune 500 retailer and over 50% of our company policies deal with providing customer service. It's the entire basis for what we do, everything else is second to providing great customer service. This is a perfect example of the opposite end of the spectrum. Whether that particular CompUSA just wasn't staffed properly that evening or not there is no excuse for the two thieves to be able to go 5 minutes without a single employee approaching them. Too many retailers in this day and age see cutting payroll as the perfect solution to save money and increase stock prices. This is an example of that coming back to bite them in the rear.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4About the guy complaining about the lack of police presence:
Dude, it's a CompUSA. Get some ***** employees behind the counters. I'd rather have police watching my house or patrolling the streets than guarding your iPods when an employee takes a smoke. - dcjake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Honestly, all my wildly poor customer service experiences at Comp USA's have left me at the point that it was hard not to cheer for the crooks. I mean, really, if you wanted to buy a handful of iPod's at a compusa you'd probably have to stand at that counter for a good 30 minutes to an hour before anyone would get around to helping you.
Like the first commenter, long long ago I worked at a Software Etc. (high school job), and yeah, greeting every customer and checking in if they needed any assistance within the first 30 seconds or so of them walking into the store was required. Electronics Boutique also had the same general policy when I worked there (13 years ago), though if my experiences in EB are any indication that's no longer the case.
In both cases it was very clear and openly discussed with employees that greeting customers wasn't just about providing good service, but also about reducing the chances of store theft.
I'm at a loss why CompUSA does so badly at this. They should acknowledge up front that they're not competing on price alone--hysical store overhead means they're never going to beat online/mail-order for that--and start charging and providing the service, help, and convenience that people might really value them for. - splitsixty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2didnt the camera move to follow the perps?(or was it an edit) If so, then security was watching, but did nothing??
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha, oh, oh, hahahahahahahaha
ahahahahahahahahahahaha - Blackscorpion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I remember the days when I would walk into a Best Buy and similar stores and I would be asked by five people if I needed help before I was ten feet inside the door. What does everyone think will be the next item stolen from that store? I think they took the word "comp" to seriously.
- geekologist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"If it was a bunch of Video iPods that was stolen, why'd the reporter have to show off a nano and explain that the stolen iPods were bigger, with a video screen? Why couldn't they just get a Video iPod--oh, wait, never mind. :)"
Also, you can notice there is a case on the Nano she is holding. It could be her own. They were just too cheap to get one to show. Psssst. Local news. - mjar81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1can anyone mirror the video file... pleeeeeese?
- empty01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Brazen bandits is a misnomer the proper term is intelligent thieves. My last semester of high school I learned a very important lesson. Being a TA for the main office had it's perks, so did only having four classes, I would end up staying through lunch and 5th period to help out (I was a loser). However, even the teachers and campus supervisors that did not know me would never question me because I walked with authority in areas that were off limits. The entire year I was stopped twice, once by a teacher asking me if I was allowed in the faculty bathroom and once by a campus supervisor who had control issues when I was getting a soda for one of the secretaries. I realized on a subsequent trip to Best Buy (before they had the door nazi's) that you could grab one of the computers that were resting on a pallette and walk out like you just purchased it and no one would question.
My biggest issue with this story is that they were wearing MASKS. Who the hell lets someone into the store wearing a ski mask? Seriously. I gotta give em respect though because they did their job efficiently and proved a very valid point to corporate (that they will miss entirely) being, you need to have employee's that do their job.
Another word of advice, loss prevention cannot stop you legally unless you have stolen something or you can sue them. Stolen being defined as leaving the store with property you did not purchase. You do not have to stop for door nazi's (with the possible exceptions of places like costco, don't make waves) and if loss prevention tackles you you can sue for false imprisonment and physical damages. I only let them check my bags dependant upon my mood, never had one chase me down yet but I'm waiting for the burly loss prevention guy to grab me and I will prompty stomp or elbow something soft(unwarranted physical contact in a situation where you are not in violation of the law is considered assault, so my response was to protect myself). When they tackle me I will claim assault and battery along with false imprisonment, sign the NDA and get my standard 5 figure settlement incurring a minimal of legal fees. I love this country. - nerdbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Alert: You are currently using an incompatible browser or an outdated version of Windows Media Player to access the video player on this site. heh - zulgand04, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1not surpriseing some one stole the XBOX 360 display from the store that i work at, turns out 2 customers watched the guy unbolt the display and walk away with it. they never thought it would be helpful to say anything.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Why do people steal?"
Age old question there. Complex as it seems, its very simple really.
My question is why doesnt Digg have an official forum? - dolphumous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The great one told us a long time ago:
http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=compusa_sucks - pondster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not sure about linux but firefox plays the video fine in XP, i'll give it a shot on my mac though.
- ogrerocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ha, I was in that store last week. (I live ten minutes from there.) There's rarely any employees around. I'm surprised they even have video cameras.
Also, the counter that the thieves went behind is about the worst placed counter ever. The opening to go behind it faces away from the service desk and front registers, meaning that the employees at the service desk couldn't see the thieves. - imtigger2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Why do people steal?"
Because they feel repressed by a society that allows them to do as they please, but then not give them what they "deserve". They live in a free country that allows them the opportunity to prosper through education, free enterprise and/or hard work ,and they feel those choices aren't right for them. So, they steal what they don't have.
Now, I gottta get back to stealing MP3's from P2P. I'm tired of "the man" tellin' me I can't do it, so I'm gonna do it, even tho' I don't have the time to listen to music nowdays and podcasts are consuming my free time and iPod space.
Peace! - aa3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"This is not the first time crime has been encountered here. A car was broken into a year-and-a-half ago. "
haha.. So much crime going on around there. - silentsuicide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was there last night looking to buy a PDA with a friend, and I'm beginning to wonder if perhaps we both blacked out and stole some iPods!
- kakos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The title really should have been "Brazen Bandits Brazenly Steal iPods Like Bandits"
- blurtheimage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The secuirity camera is panning and zooming while these guys robbed them blind and no one stopped them on the way out.
And you know what? I wouldn't have stopped these guys either. At $6.50 (or whatever minimum wage is) there is no way I'm approaching two ballsy guys like these.
The only way I'd get near one of these guys is to see if they'd sell me one. - bem1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why do people steal?
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Notice how at the end of the video they focused blame on the city police for the lack of CompUSA's instore security?
- brewer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd just like to point out that IT WASN'T the CompUSA manager that mentioned the lack of police presence. It was Ed Tluc, which the video identified as a customer.
- ziggystardust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1State-of -the-art video iPods...as opposed to those steam-powered nano's. WTF!
- snowthrower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WFSB is pretty bad, lets put it that way.
- sexypixels, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've checked craigslist, New Haven. Hartford
- modpancake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm on the executive boards for seventy-one separate Fortune 500 retail companies. This happens about 800,000 times a day; not news.
- happbando, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awesome. i used to work at the party city next door, we always had tons of shoplifting problems. the whole plaza has this problem. you'd think someone would have done something long ago. we complained about it all the time.
- thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is not the first time crime has been encountered here. A car was broken into a year-and-a-half ago. According to some, there should be more of a police presence to capture bandits just like this.
stupid bastards like that need to be hung.
they're the whole reason the patriot act is in play. - frankendigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That is awful, can anyone get me one?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's a nice and secure environment.. not!
- aMillionAndNine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Funny, but I have to agree with many of the people above - poor writing and poor reporting. I hardly ever watch local news anymore, is it all that badly done?
- mustache, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CompUSA. C'mon, every CompUSA I've ever been in I've had to wait at least 20 minutes for somebody to come to the counter. The one counter that's open with 20 people standing in line.
The employees there probably don't even know what an iPod is. They know NOTHING about anything in that entire store. CompUSA will never get my money, ever again.
Hire some knowledgeable people, or even ones with half a clue and I'd be happy. Meanwhile, I'm goin double the distance to Fry's. - meangene, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Inside job, security guy's friend.
- kolbsoft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This doesnt surprise me. The customer service there is extremely horrible.
- lilazndrumrboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sry........noticed that i did *door slams* *drives off* twice...........ignore the second one........i had like a mental relapse.....
- LawrenceDudley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The secuirity camera is panning and zooming while these guys robbed them blind and no one stopped them on the way out. "
Erm... I noticed that too, but if you look closely you will see that the picture is actually a recording of the video being played back on another computer. Talk about low-budget production... - imtigger2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0">> Hartford >> http://hartford.craigslist.org/ele/122390414.html"
Not one of them.. that one comes "with warranty" - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's pretty ballsy of those guys. Pretty lame that NO one saw anything.
- netwookiee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can anyone post a direct link to the video itself, please?
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"This is not the first time crime has been encountered here. A car was broken into a year-and-a-half ago."
Boy, that was worth mentioning. - danio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Just wanted to add, this really shows you how customer service has really gone down the tubes."
what tubes? - nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Alert: You are currently using an incompatible browser or an outdated version of Windows Media Player to access the video player on this site. Please read the troubleshooting tips below for more information."
