- lickmygiggle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23So I guess Microsoft created the Zune in order to keep the iPod on top of all other mp3 players?
That makes sense........wait no, It makes no ***** sense whatsoever. - trghpy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Its a desktop Frankenstein.
*Sigh* time to get the torches and pickforks out... - Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Thats actually pretty cool, no more looking into a window inside a window, or having to switch desktop spaces.
Now can Paralells get their virtual OS to support graphics acceleration!? - MajorD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@ItchyMcknobster - From a Windows guy to a Windows guy - it's ok for OSX to have some really cool *****. There's no need to debate history... the features within Parallels are groundbreaking and we should be embracing these developers.
- rodrigomuniz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5now we know where vista will run good.
- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Disgusting! Unthinkable! Handy!
er... what?
Seriously though, Outlook webmail is horribly stunted in any browser other than IE (or Firefox with IE tab). Solution? Coherence (when needed) so I can drag and drop across operating systems and still use the programs I need. It still needs work but this feature, while a Frankendesktop, is incredibly valuable. - LaPistola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Because sometimes.. you just have to run a windows app..
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I hardly know the exact details and motivations of the MS stock deal, which netted Apple $150M in working capital...my thoughts on the matter have always been that Jobs saw the opportunity to use Microsoft as an interest-free bank, an opportunity that was created by the fact that Microsoft was embroiled in its antitrust trial.
I think Jobs would have easily gotten the money elsewhere but took it from Microsoft because there would be no loans to pay back, no interest, etc. Just another stockholder to ignore during their annual shareholder meetings. - digga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's because the Parallels window is still there -- it's just transparent and fills the entire screen. In other words, every Windows window is still trapped inside the Parallels window.
- danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I run parallels on my iMac. It runs fine once you are in it but it take forever..... to switch between the two environments. I think I need to upgrade my ram because I only have 1 GB.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3its not bad, but im not going for it until i get FULL support of windows apps, or support for apps that matter. it currently fully supports office 2000 (office 2000!?) and up to photoshop 7.0! then theres steam (including HL and CS:S etc.), and a bunch of versions of quickbooks....
Its promising, but its nothing great in the moment. i do believe they will get better in the near future, though. - digga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think you meant seductive... ;)
- csnoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Something tells me this technology is built into 10.5... it's only a matter of time until Apple eats parallels for lunch.
- fraggle35, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://osx.portraitofakite.com/ all the hard works done for you.
- heptahedron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does anyone know about the security issues with this configuration? Can one totally disconnect the Windows instance from any access to networking hardware (or ensure that absolutely 100% of inbound traffic is routed to the Mac side)? Can one ensure that every USB device talks only to the OS X instance? If the Windows partition gets pwned, could it corrupt the partition map of the HD and take out the Mac install?
Thanks - w00master, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So e-mail them and ask them. Is it that hard to do?
Parallels is one of the best apps out right now for Intel Macs. PICK IT UP! - manitoba98xp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah...they need a better implementation. Maybe simulate as many monitors as the Mac has? Or maybe use seamless RDP? In any case, this is a real victory.
- raid517, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What's the matter with you people - you don't like the truth?
At least you know how it works now and that it really isn't witchcraft. - penguindude15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is simply awesome...
Please work with Expose. - thenikola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah it supports steam but doesnt play the games so what is the point?
It is handy for smaller programs tho. - DoubtfulSalmon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WARNING: I just downloaded and installed this. It wiped out my licensed version (1070?) of Parallels, and asked for a new key. My existing key didn't work. When I uninstalled and tried to re-install my licensed copy, my paid key doesn't work any more. This software is BROKEN!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2that really was awesome
i wish they would come out with soemthing like this on linux, like build that into vmware or this new kvm (kernel virtual machine) thing im hearing about . maybe thats their plan for it?
id love to be able to run photoshop without going to a spereate window (gimp just isnt cutting it)
also id love to be able to run 3d accelorated stuff like games or 3ds max too that would be AWESOME! :) (ofcourse youd still have to have windows installed somewhere for it to work... ) - EnjoyTheFact, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg merely for the fact that they used The Fiery Furnaces.
- xmetal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh boy...
Three seconds on Google would have found you this: Parallels Desktop for Mac is the first solution that gives Apple users the ability to run Windows alongside Mac OS X in a secure, isolated virtual machine. - Asheron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm interested in whether or not I can use something to skin windows in parallels. Probably have all those apps use the original Aqua theming or something just a bit off and then I'll be able to dicern the difference without having too eclectic of a desktop.
- digga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, it's totally different.
- pickerin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Unfortunately, it's not as cool as it could be. Coherence windows cannot span monitors, they're "trapped" on whatever monitor you fired up Parallels on. I normally run it full screen on one window and thought Coherence would give me my entire two screens of resolution back, but alas, it does not. Windows cannot be dragged to the "other" monitor.
- cakestick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Because Entourage sucks the most. I love the fact that Outlook blazes right along in Coherence mode.
Anyone having a problem with certain windows being hidden while in the mode? (cmd prompt for me, can't figure it out..) - jaredvolkl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd actually been using the newest build of Parallels for over a week now. I wasn't a fan of Coherence mode. Granted, it is still in beta, so they may improve it before it makes it into the final build. Then I saw them use VirtueDesktops along with a fullscreened Parallels window. I had all this software, but never put it together like that. And it only took me about 15 minutes to get things working the way I wanted.
- digga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@cakestick
The cmd window not being visible is actually a known bug with the current beta build. - Kypt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why would people run office when in a little while its coming to mac anyway?
- 20miles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I suggest installing the freely available Royale media center theme by Microsoft. It will makes those parallels windows mesh a bit better.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2just get windowblinds and download the OS X tiger skin. its very accurate.
- chuckeroo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It is pretty obvious to me that by the time this product is out of beta and launched, you won't even see the Windows UI anymore. The apps will just (appear to) run and be launched in OSX.
Anyone tried an Aqua skin in Windows with this setup? - pjevans, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Cool, very cool, but also very dupe. I know this as I've been running in for the past few days after seeing it on Digg. Still it's cool, so I digg.
Anyway, it's very cool. I recently upgraded to 2GB RAM and Parallels and OSX run very, very nicely together. You can leave a VM running and it doesn't slow anything down. They need to work on the Windows toolbar's apperance, but I'm sure a nice solution is in the offing.
Did I mention it was cool? - LaPistola, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3And gooder and gooder.. ;)
- digga, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Of course you can -- there are many Aqua-type skins available, and they're not perfect so you'll still be able to tell the difference.
- jdepp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is why Microsoft aren't bothering to implement VB in Mac Office 2007. ppl will just get Vista/XP + Office PC and run it on their mac. I expect that at some point Apple will buy Parallels, esp. with new intel chips that support hypervisors, it's just too useful not to.
- bleonard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2as much as running windows apps on the mac may suxz0r, its a nice deductive feature.
- kd5ftn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It does NOT work with Expose.. Expose shows the entire "hidden" windows desktop as one window.
Coherence mode is very awesome though. The coolest feature has to be drag and drop file transfer between the two operating systems. - SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow, now that's useful.
- ekmoore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Makes me feel dirty as hell, but at a windows based school, it'll certainly come in handy.
- wire46, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0apple is soooooooooo batter than haveing windows xp and apple side by side not cool
- raid517, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You mean because it's mac?
This is terminal services - perhaps a slightly beefed up version - but it is the same principal. Unless you somehow believe your Mac works by magic. - caw18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why? Because Autodesk (makers of Autocad) no longer make a Mac version. I use Land Development Desktop on a 20" Imac via Parallels. It was easy to set up, and it works.
- fraggle35, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Disgusting! Unnatural!" I was thinking old news, have you been asleep for the last couple of weeks?
- raid517, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1To be clear it is a virtual terminal server. You have a virtual instance of XP running a real terminal server - which serves up the terminals/virtualised apps you see on your Mac.
And yes Windows users have had this for a very long time - and Linux users also. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was using a licensed copy of build 1070, and installed the beta. It works fine, still says it's licensed to me. It does remove the executable from the Applications directory and makes a Parallels subdirectory.
Also, it seems faster than it used to, which is always nice. - umdigger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Now if only the MBP had a graphics card that would allow Solid Works 2007 to run smoothly I'd be all set.
- diggapleeeze, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4This was news, three weeks ago.
