- SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32Not Linux, Unix applications. Anything that uses Linux-specific calls, or that is only available as a Linux/386 binary (example: Nvidia kernel/X modules) will not be installed by Fink. This will not make OSX binaty compatible with Linux.
- susan87, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29Can I install Gnome this way?
- Akkarin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Amarok would be awesome on OS X.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15"Um, most Linux programs don't make Linux specific calls"
Then they are by definition not Linux specific and therefore are Unix applications
"OS X includes most of the Linux libraries, including X11"
X11 is not a Linux library, the X windowing system is universal for all *NIX OS's and in fact OSx is the only one I can think of that does not use it as it's standard windowing system. - trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Yes, but it isn't easy.
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13X11 is a Linux library? Pretty amazing time machine MIT must have had since they started development on it in the mid 80's.. a decade before Linux even existed.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Why not?
- Andytom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I love that this comment and replies could be on any how to or new technology thread .
- RangerRick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Yes, but it's a little out of date at the moment. I'm working on a huge update to bring gnome up to 2.18, but for now, it's got bits and pieces from 2.6 up through 2.12 and 2.18.
- cwgannon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Google OSX86.
I've never tried it myself, but I'd speculate it requires a fairly decent system and 'mainstream' hardware, for the most part. - chudiggs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Many of these applications are NOT Linux specific. Perhaps a better title would be... How to install open source software on MacOSX...
- SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Because you can?
- Avian00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Why are people digging susan87 down? Seems like a valid question for an articled entitled: "How to install Linux applications in OS X - a complete walkthrough"
Thanks for those who responded with real answers. I was kind of curious myself. - BRODEL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@1jaxstate1
I'd love to use this to run TrueCrypt... - dezent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Could everybody please stop using the name "Linux" for anything that use X11 or console ?
Most of the stuff in finks repo is GNU software http://www.gnu.org
i was installing the same apps on my sgi o2 last week.. and thats irix. - guttertrash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6darwin ports is less troublesome than fink supposedly. if you can use apt-get you can use fink or port, if you cant use apt-get then i would wonder why you are trying to install unix packages :P
- Acglaphotis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8k3b, amarok, exaile you name it man...
- strangewill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6If it isn't Apple hardware: No, Not legally.
- SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"What is iptables?
iptables is the userspace command line program used to configure the Linux 2.4.x and 2.6.x IPv4 packet filtering ruleset.
[...]
iptables requires a kernel that features the ip_tables packet filter. This includes all 2.4.x and 2.6.x kernel releases."
(from http://www.netfilter.org/projects/iptables/index.html )
Yes, it's Linux-specific. - nandabanaotakun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Apple has their own ports platform that shares code with Fink: Macports. Being able to run Unix apps is one of the selling points on the Apple website. You are an idiot.
- gerkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They are not "Linux" programs. "Linux" is a kernel. The userland in Linux is (mostly) GNU. Linux has nothing to do with it.
I've sent up the bat signal here and RMS has been notified, expect him to come in on a tirad about GNU/Linux soon :) - gharding, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@Dog_Paddle:
You think running X11, KDE, and KTorrent on top of OSX is going to be more lightweight than Azureus? Good luck with that. - RedBear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes, you can install Gnome, but it won't act as a Finder replacement, if that's what you're looking for. It can however be used as the default window manager for X11, which is kind of cool. I did this a while back just to see if it could be done, and the documentation is out there for those interested. The biggest thing you had to do was modify some default file for X11 (can't remember for the life of me what it's called) that would request gnome to be used as the default window manager. I may be getting the terms wrong, I'm no guru by any means, but it was a fun challenge, and really not that overly difficult to achieve.
- pauleric, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4not legally
- sovok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3wget, albeit curl is good too.
- prout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You better try MacPort this is much better that FINK.
As a package manager it is amazing better than apt-get in the friendliness of use.
http://www.macports.org/
and http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/macports/wiki - ilgaz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I did install KDE via 3 clicks using Fink commander, Gnome shouldn't be different.
Also thanks to OS X, it was first time I didn't live my regular Turkish keyboard nightmare on GNU Window Managers/X - Dog_Paddle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I use KTorrent, Amarok feels cluttered compared to iTunes for me so I don't use it often.
KTorrent has selectable downloads unlike Transmission, and is lighter/faster than Azereus
I don't use anything besides that - pyrates, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Now if they can work on just ONE desktop distribution that comes with autopackage by default, I'd be happy. Ubuntu is getting their though.
- Veight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't have much use for Linux applications but this was a godsend when I needed a new bittorrent client. rtorrent is completely awesome compared to anything else on OS X.
- repruhsent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, it's true that port is easy to use; but for some people, compiling all that code is a big turn off.
- justdbc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What aps do *you* need? Heck, I don't have any idea. What is your work product?
The aps *I* need before a computer becomes worth booting are:
gschem, pcb, gnetlist, and QCad.
This article helps me a lot, since I am about to go get a Mac laptop.
YMMV - mallardtheduck, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Yes, but there is no legal way to obtain Mac OS X for Intel without buying an Intel Mac.
If this does not bother you, cracked DVD images are easily available in the usual locations for pirated software. - zmigliozzi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2But why when MAC is "Ready out of the box." You can make a photo album for your friends...lol. and just have the things "you need" in the iLife package.
ya... been using fink for about 6months now. - rstarr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Seems cool, great guide. I'm all about apps running on a variety of OS's.
But um, honestly what Linux apps would I absolutely need on OSX to go through this process? - slapthemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sure, will tell friends who are into Linux.
- SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Case in point: iptables (and therefore any Linux firewall)
- jlchin114, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Great article. Just what I was looking for. Thanks!
- wing05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Look up osx86 project in google.
But from the sounds of it, you're talking about an Athlon XP. I believe the project site would say no. You gotta have sse3 or sse2 compatability. - Twango, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yeah ... why? Because you can? What's out there that's worth the trouble?
- kjm16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great! now all I nead is an article on how to install windows apps on osx and I'm set. (without virtualization or Windows installed)
- Ngai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yay! i can do it...
i'm gonna try tommorrow.. :) - ilgaz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You will live regular white box PC if you install pirated OS X to that thing. Use Linux, you will live much better experience or buy a cheap iMac/Mini to live OS X experience.
- jasz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1dugg you up for having an O2.. *drools*
- ilgaz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Darwinports GUI installer is selling for $30 , Fink commander is free. If Darwinports people care about average desktop user, they should code their own "Darwin Commmander".
No offence but it is a very irritating thing. I would rather donate to those great projects and the package team (those who hacks makefiles) rather than paying $30 for a GUI shell. - ilgaz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1http://www.apple.com/opensource/
http://developer.apple.com/opensource/index.html
People like you trying to troll makes it impossible to critique Apple for ordinary users for real concerns. - RedBear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are lots of great apps out there that haven't been ported for mac yet, and this is an easy way for us Mac folk to enjoy them too! It may be out for Mac now, but I remember installing xaos this way a while back...great fractal app that really has no comparative program available on the Mac. Hell, go through the list of available binaries on fink and you'll see thousands of apps. I think this is a great way to help Mac users who are more interested in learning other platforms make strides in the right direction...
- SteveMax, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1No. It's like having an article with the title:
"Today, we're going to show you how to build a wall made out of adobe bricks."
And the article tells you how to build a wall made of concrete bricks.
Linux apps (as in "those that only run on Linux) cannot be installed by Fink. Unix apps (as in "those that can run on Linux, *BSD, Solaris, and others) can. The article shows you how to install those Unix apps (for example, openoffice, X11, amaroK, K3b, Gimp, etc) using Fink. It won't let you install Linux(-only) apps, such as iptables. - PURDooM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Fink uses apt-get to do all its dirty work... I don't see what point you are making.
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Did Steven say you guys could do this? Maybe you should ask him first; you wouldn't want to do anything with your computer that he doesn't explicitly say you can.
