- Dimah, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Millions of people can get it wrong. It's all about the mindset. Millions of people are used to Windows and people saying that "Apple just sucks. Thats all there is to it."
Baisicly, People don't like change - zero_tek, on 10/12/2007, -10/+23The number one complaint I get is the one button mouse... get a two button one, lol. nice article.
- Omega697, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Here you go, dumbass.
http://www.apple.com/mightymouse/ - zumpiez, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Ah yes. The mighty mouse. A true feat of excessive engineering in response to an unbelievably simple problem.
- posure, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9It's like Nintendo products which also always hit the front page. People are passionate about the products they love most. I can't say I don't digg every Nintendo story that comes up just to help promote them.
-digg me, I don't care. I'm a whoooore. - r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11@djnick
People obviously care about it, otherwise it wouldn't make the front page.
What a friggin' stupid statement. - ZackS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The screenshot function in Mac OS X is fairly nice and some modes require you to hold more keys than others. The most basic screenshot is Command-Shift-3. This takes a shot of the entire screen and saves it as a file for you on the desktop. By pressing 4 instead of three, the mouse changes into a set of crosshairs so you can select a portion of the screen. Or, while the crosshairs are still on screen, press the spacebar to have the OS automatically lock on to particular windows to take screenshots of them. Or, by adding the control key to the mix, the screenshot gets sent to the clipboard rather than a file on the desktop.
All of these techniques can then be mixed and matched to get exactly the screenshot you want in exactly the place that you want it. For example, the most complex shortcut you could use would be, Command-Control-Shift-4, then a tap of the space bar, which will get you a screenshot on the clipboard of whatever window you want. On the other end of the spectrum, there's Command-Shift-3 to take a basic screenshot. Mind you, all of these shortcuts are user-remappable but I like them as they are, Some seem like they take a lot of keys, but the placement isn't bad at all. Three fingers at most for an action you don't really need to perform all that often and don't want to perform by accident. - pinnette, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7How exactly did Yahoo hurt Konfabulator? This is a serious question b/c I got Konfabulator just after Yahoo bought it and made it free. At that point, they hadn't changed anything other than the price to free. I actually didn't know about it until Yahoo bought it b/c they posted it on the Yahoo homepage. I know that its "uncool" to use Yahoo b/c Google is "cool" but are you simply displeased w/the name change. I didn't notice any change when they updated it to Yahoo Widget Engine other than the name.
Not surprised my other comment already has a thumbs down since I am helping to educate people as to where Widgets came from. Lets just continue to pretend they were created by Apple and that Microsoft is just copying Apple rather than learning something. - KuroiAme, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16With the introduction of Boot Camp, I see no reason not to switch over. In fact, my next purchase is gonna be a Macbook Pro.
- jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -18/+25this'll get me lots of -diggs, but it seems that really the only people that are interested in these articles that are people already using macs, at least, surely we've seen enough "i love apple, i hate microsoft" type old news on digg already.
- posure, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9A one button mouse **by default** has always been an annoying issue. Apple giving people awesome computers with a one button mouse is like giving a hungry man a steak and a butter knife.
- Flanker, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10No, the Windows version is Alt-PrintScreen. 2 buttons.
- pacdude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Well, after you edited out, "Don't talk about things you don't know anything about," then you sounded less condescending. These edits are snarky, no?
- MStiles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Another really nice "switch" guide went up today: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1953186,00.asp
That one covers both Windows users trying out OS X, and Mac users trying out Windows. - cinder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6As someone who is looking to switch in the near (or not so near, where is the non Pro version of the MacBook?!) future, this is great. It has answered a lot of basic questions I had about OS X. Dugg.
- posure, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Yeah, you can buy a two button one but I'm sure that 95% of the people out there would prefer two buttons to the one gigantic single button on their laptop. (talking about when you don't have the ability to use a real mouse with an Apple laptop)
- loganrapp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Really, this "Switch" article seems a lot less condescending than most of the others I've read in the past - and let's be honest, there have been quite a few of those. I honestly see it as just a helpful guide for even people who just may have to use OS X for work or any other reason. I could've certainly used some tips like this early on when I bought my first iBook.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't really see the need to get into the whole fanboy-fest again. But that's probably just going to be me swimming against the current on this one. - wocket, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5If you hate the one button mouse, just buy a Logitech and replace it. Most all of the functionality works just out of the box, and you no longer have to press the command key all the time. (you probably replaced the ball mouse that came with your PC anyway, or if not, you obviously don't care enough about mice for the mouse to bother you anyway)
/rant - austinhamilton, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3Very helpful article. I've been thinking of making the switch, and one thing I've wondered is what software is good for Macs.
digg - po6ot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4My friend bought a MacBook Pro just recently. First thing he did was install Boot Camp. Then in XP he installed his Adobe Creative Suite and all his favourite apps. Now he lives in XP permanently. He shows no sign of switching at all. I wonder how common this will be?
- Waredgo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Look, good ideas incorporated into an OS will pop up in other OS'es...it's just an evolutionary process. We should be thankful that we are benefitting for these ideas propogating into apps that we need them in. No reason to bitch about it. MS steals from Apple, Apple steals from Stanford, so on and so forth. You're probably one step or two ahead by using OSX with its cool features which Vista (or third party apps) will incorporate soon, sure, but ones that are deemed as great ANYWHERE will start to show up in all other browsers whether they be linux, MS, Apple or whatever-based. It's a good thing.
- evilgod69, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3the single mouse button simplifies the whole experience. you should try teaching old or people with memory issues on how to use the 2 button mouse.... it's not fun. it's part of the reason i recommend apple computers to new users.
i even bring an old g3 to class, just for those students who have serious problems learning windows xp, just so they feel like they achieved something. - Perc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4> The touchpad also lacks scrolling
No, it doesn't. You scroll by using two fingers simultaneously in any direction. This beats edge scrolling, scroll buttons or a separate scroll strip IMO. (yes I know this is redundant, but I wanted to elaborate)
> Yeah, you can buy a two button one but I'm sure that 95% of the people out there would prefer
> two buttons to the one gigantic single button on their laptop.
I find the "gigantic" button ergonomic. I frequently "mouse" with my right thumb while typing, and using a two-button laptop is annoying because I have to reach over to left click. Also on a laptop, ctrl is never far away. - frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desk_Accessory

(Warning: Alters your drivers to make this work. Not authorized by Apple/disclaimer disclaimer disclaimer). - pinnette, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It wasn't my intent to sound angry about the widget thing, I just wanted people to understand that they are in no way "mac-unique" as suggested in this blog and many others with information about Dashboard. I don't think there is anything wrong w/Apple including widgets in their OS but when people act as if Apple invented them, that is annoying. This was supposedly one of the "big innovations" that came w/Tiger and it wasn't new at the time. A more important issue is the comment system where some people simply scan down pages of comments and bury anything they don't agree with. Maybe this is what was intended w/the "new" comment system, maybe not. Either way, I think its a foolish system. I think there are too many immature people trolling the comments sections for comments to bury b/c it makes them feel special. To those people I say congratulations on your diligent pursuit of ignorance.
- Flanker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"Lastly, another notable screenshot feature is Apple+Shift+4+Spacebar, which will take a screenshot of the window of the application you've got open."
4 buttons!? - dswskinner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Chill out there dude, they are just widgets. I think you'll find Stardock supported them long before Konfabulator.
It doesn't matter, people/businesses build on others ideas. It's how progress works. - cuppyCake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I think most new Apple hardware comes with Mighty Mouse... at least, I know the iMac does. That's a two-button mouse...
- schrodingercat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I'm using a wordpress plugin that automatically uses coral cache to reduce the load on my server, so it might be loading slowly because Coral doesn't necessarily load quickly. Meanwhile you might want to try manually typing in the address: www.idiosyncrasies.org/wordpress
- Flanker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4adam1185: Fair enough, it may actually be quicker. I was really commenting more on the awkwardness of pressing 4 buttons all at once.
pacdude: Condescending? How?! - aOenEz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I love it how he said nothing demeaning at all, and at the time of this response his diggs are at -3. That is the problem with digg these days. People just bury anything they don't like, not anything that is innapropriate. Sad..
- adam1185, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Oh and just to clarify, you press the spacebar after you press cmd-shift-4 so it's really only 3 buttons at once. The spacebar just highlights the window you want to take the screenshot of. Instead of pressing spacebar you could also drag a square box out over any area of the screen to basically crop the image before the screenshot is even taken. But I think that's enough arguing over screenshots.
- CedanticPunt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2-1 for using a logical fallacy in your 9th point. It's probably a "poisoning the well" fallacy, but I might be wrong.
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3use two fingers to scroll through a page... does anyone seriously find it comfortable to use a multi button mouse on a track pad? just get a usb mouse it's more comfortable and you can be more productive.
- leep80, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Just a plug for a piece of software for apple laptops. It is Side Track, it isn't univeral yet, but they say it is comming. It is a shareware utility that brings a pseudo multi-button mouse to your laptop. You can configure the corners of the touch pad to a right click or application specific actions like going back in your browser etc. Also it enables scrolling from the touch pad for those of us with older laptops.
http://www.ragingmenace.com/software/sidetrack/index.html - schrodingercat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There may be very little new information in this story, but the fact of the matter is, the purpose of it is to give some people who are used to using Windows begin to feel more comfortable possibly working on a Mac. It by no means serves as an argument for which OS is better (I own both WinXP and Mac OS X Tiger) but just a guide for anyone who may be forced/asked/wants to switch from one to another.
If you yourself ever have to, or if a computer-illiterate friend has to, you can then point them to this article. Make sense? - tacom8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1honestly how oftain do you take screen shots? nice idea from apple, i'll give them credit they do think of the little things. but i am sure a 3rd party ap for windows is available (or should be made) to do the same thing.
My question is why do we even have those button on a keyboard anymore anyways, or atleast change the name/function. i don't think "print screen" has printed anything since 1989. or the mighty pause/break key... - flyingbuddha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I recently bought a mac mini used from eBay - I own and operate a PC repair shop and wanted to be prepared for whatever the future held due to the switch by apple to Intel chips. I'm not fortune teller, but who knows? Anyway I learned to program in 6Th grade on a brand spankin new Apple IIe, used macs once in a while throughout my education, and the last real interaction I had with a mac was designing my wedding invitations on a brand new Mac FX back in 1991. For the past 15 years, I've been a PC man exclusively, for the past 13, I've worked in IT in one capacity or another.
I have to say I'm extremely impressed with OSX Tiger so far. It already includes many promised Vista features that have since been pulled - I'm not talking shiny stuff, I'm talking contextual searches and virtual folders. Sure, google desktop can get you close, but that functionality should really be built in. I also bought the mighty mouse because I'm used to multiple buttons. I'm still learning my way around it - I dl azereus, ran it once and now I can't find it again for the life of me (unless the installed app and the dl'd package are one and the same), but that's part of the learning curve I suppose. The only thing I really don't like about the mini so far is the loudness of the DVD drive. The machine is so slick/ "minority reportish" looking, yet the drive sounds like one of the big old reel to reel tape drives - funny! - Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Speaking as someone who bought a Mac last year, I wish I'd had this info back then. Good article.
And come on gang, no need to slag on Macs with this article. He's not claiming they're "superior" to PCs... just giving tips. Sheesh. - pinnette, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Just so everyone knows, there is a great program out there for Windows users to access widgets, it was Konfabulator but is now the Yahoo Widget Engine. Apple gets a lot of credit for Widgets but, correct me if I'm wrong, Dashboard wasn't included until Tiger, launched 4/29/05. Konfabulator actually launched on 2/10/03. It was originally a Mac only product but there has been a Windows version since November of 2004. WIDGETS WERE NOT ORIGINATED BY APPLE AND ARE AVAILABLE FOR WINDOWS NOW. http://widgets.yahoo.com/
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2There are actually multiple applications for OSX that allow you to use the touch-pad as if you had a right click and a scroll bar. Yes it would be better to have a real right click button but is that really a reason to hate a laptop or a platform as a whole, because the mouse could be a slight bit more convenient?
- UltraNurd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well written, but I personally prefer the Apple defaults for, among other things, Spotlight, Mail, and iChat.
- internutdpl, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Now they just need to add the second clik'r to laptops, The conversion will be complete.
- magstheaxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been seriously thinking about switching, but I wasn't sure how hard it would be. So I'm glad to see this article--it helps me understand what I can expect. Right now I have WinXP machines (a laptop and a desktop) so when they finally give up the ghost I'll probably go to a MacBook.
- JetwingX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Unless you get a laptop or go for a wireless package, you do get a mouse with Left/Right +Scroll/3rd Click
- LoungeActx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Actually, the Apple Widgets, and the Konfabulator(Yahoo! Widget Engine, this name is too ***** long) Widgets are vastly different. The Apple Widgets use HTML/Javascript to run. Y!WE Widgets use a combo of unique JavaScript and XML to run. The Apple Widgets are actually much much more powerful then the Y!WE Widgets, I should know my roomate and I made a couple Yahoo Widgets.
- CedanticPunt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1My advice would be to check all the software you want to run has an equivalent on your new platform. Then, see if you can play with it for a few days to see if you can get used to its quirks and differences. Be prepared to adapt; there are some things you'll miss, but you can usually find another feature that does the job just as well, but does it in a different way. Finally, consider buying a good book for beginners that'll show loads of features you may not have even thought of looking for.
- Euan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2And then can I play Battlefield2? No! Bah to Macs!

What is Digg?
The Digg Toolbar for Firefox lets you Digg, submit content, and keep track of Digg even when you're not on the Digg site. Download the official
